    I am not Singaporean, but I do study Singaporean history (not a lot) and I am dumbfounded by how is this Singapore dirty secret. Regardless of what dirty acts that Stanford Raffles did to fool the Sultan into giving him Singapore, it is an undisputable fact that Raffles is the one that modernize Singapore and yes, he is part of the Singapore history regardless of him being a colonizer or not.
    To remove Raffles statue is insulting the history of Singapore itself. Not everyone is like the West who only keen to remove the "bad part" of their history by removing the statues and cherrypicking the good things about their country's history.
    History is not only about learning the contributions of the country and its figures, but also the atrocities and bad actions that they committed. Removing the statues would do nothing to remove that "stain" from the history book. By the quote of George Santayana, "those who forgets the past are condemned to repeat it again."

      but at the same time, revere the kings and conquerors who invaded their own lands just because "they were natives to this land or looked like them"
      A good example is Indian history
      we here, always praise the Mughals and Marathas for their contribution to the subcontinent, meanwhile ignoring the misdeeds and insane levels of atrocities. While, the British are regarded here as "evil colonisers" just cus they were from another continent.

    I don't like the tone of saying oh Singapore actually kept their colonialist statues as if we're too backwards to know any better or we're too submissive to Britain to dare to think about it. The fact of the matter is, a lot of us are actually grateful for the foundations laid by the British; our institutions like government, police, rule of law, civil service, etc are all inherited from the British, and the fact that I'm using English right now is also a positive legacy of the British. We don't have any natural resources, so we weren't really exploited really badly like the other colonies. We were mostly just used as a trading port. The British were complacent and incompetent though as shown when they let Singapore fall to the Japanese. And they pretty much got chased out because of that

    Irrespective of the empire, Raffles was a progressive and visionary man for his time, in a number of important regards. He was a botanist who studied the sustainable farming techniques of the Javanese and Bugis and founded the S’pore Botanical Gardens and London Zoo. He was a Malay scholar with a great appreciation for the cultures and languages of SE Asia. And most importantly, he was a radical liberal reformer: his arguments against slavery helped to end to the local Malay and Chinese slave trades (those who were trafficked into S’pore by local slave traders automatically became free men and women under British colonial law), and he was even denied burial at his local church by a pastor who was upset by his anti-slavery campaigning. His Regulations for Singapore (1823) established a list of basic rights for *all* citizens (something unique for the time, in an otherwise feudal society), as well as evidence-based justice for the first time in the region. The cool deliberations and fair advocacy of a courtroom replaced the revenge-based ‘justice’ that had often led to the wrong person being killed, or entire families being wiped out in retaliation. There is also no doubt that he founded modern Singapore; the earlier medieval ‘Singapura’ lasted less than a century in the 1300s, before disappearing again. However, Raffles (being a Malay scholar) had the respect for the region’s history to re-use the name for his new global trading post. His statue consequently deserves to stand tall where it does, honouring one of the greatest and most forward-thinking men of his age.

    • @turlstreet
      @turlstreet Рік тому +11

      Raffles' Regulations for Singapore resulted in a strikingly enlightened founding constitutional document for the new proto-nation, parts of which still sound progressive to the modern ear. These sentiments drew from ideals of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with parallels in both the English Bill of Rights (1689) and its later American namesake (1789). There are appeals to natural justice, a belief in equality amongst men, and clauses that are written with an assumption of free expression and assembly:
      ‘Let all men [in Singapore] be considered equal in the eye of the law’; ‘Let no man be banished without a trial by his peers and due course of law’; ‘Let no man be deprived of his liberty without a cause, and no man detained beyond forty-eight hours without right to a hearing and trial according to due course of law’; ‘Let the public have a voice through the magistracy, by which their sentiments may at all times be freely expressed’.
      Prior to this, the region was governed by tribal chieftains and sultans with absolute control over their people's lives and property. If you were poor, female, or a minority, you had no rights whatsoever and could have everything taken from you on a whim. In Raffles' Singapore, a local gained legal rights to his own property and his own business, and could walk wherever he chose, without interference from government.

    Britain's colonial rule of Singapore is an inherent part of Singapore's history. It's nothing to be ashamed of. We inherited many good things from the British which we continue to cherish. There is a LOT of WOKE NONSENSE going on in western countries. Countries that used to be powerful and impressive empires have somehow been guilt tripped into taking the blame for all the world's problems and accepting that despite the fact they pretty much built the entire modern world and receive nothing but harassment for it. Imperial conquests had been going on everywhere for thousands of years by everyone looking to take a shot at it, but because Europe became particularly good at doing so, they are seen as the "villains" instead of people congratulating them on achieving such feats. We live in a clown world.

You look back on people like Alexander the Great and go "wow, that guy was awesome, the Greeks are so cool!" Now though, the British have essentially been brainwashed to look back on their own empire in disgust, despite the fact that having the largest empire in human history should be a source of national pride. ANY nation would k*ll for that kind of prestigious history.
      Britain got made to feel guilty by jealous ethnic minorities in their borders and outcries of their former colonies, colonies whom 100% would have done the same thing if they had the power and rather than look on the British as being an integral part of their history and accepting the cultural influences that permeated their society, b*tch about them, probably for political gain and possibly to extort reparations or something which many nations have fallen for. The riot is just an excuse to kick and punish Singapore and soon PM Lee for defied Malay govt. PAP and UMNO ain't best friends.
      The Malaysia govt was expecting Singapore begging them to take Singapore back into the union by disbanding PAP and removing PM Lee from power.
      Well, here we are now.
      Remember the Tunku didn't tell all govt officials and kept silent until the day of announcement of separation of the two nations.

    Singapore has a different colonial past from other colonized countries in that Raffles went to a place that was essentially jungle and swamp with a few inhabitants. Most Singaporeans who live in Singapore today are there as a result of British colonialism. They came only after the British established it as a place to be; so really, the attitude towards colonialism is going to be different from other places that were taken over by force (and which the majority of inhabitants are descendants of those who were colonized). So in Singapore, Raffles is celebrated as the one who gathered future Singaporeans together to live on that island. Hence, there is no need to tear that statue down.
