As a Singaporean, I know some people who hate Lee Kuan Yew but honestly without him, we would be living in slums, call him a dictator, but he made Singapore what we are today. He is indeed Singapore’s father.

As a Singaporean, I have mixed feelings about Lee Kuan Yew and his party. While he and his party has done a lot of good for Singapore, it is also important to be honest and transparent about the methods he used to achieve his goals. It is also useful to remember that not all of PAP policies worked. I think for Singapore to continue to prosper, we need to be able to be constructively critical about the government.
Singapore is one of the few countries where Dictatorship done right under a benevolent leader who has a vision and care for his people. LKY is an inspiration for many leaders today that failed to achieve what he can.
Today so called western democratic societies are failing ... Violent crimes , rampant drug use , ideological battles have devided the society . Everything in moderation is needed . Developing countries have to take some steps for curtailing wokism and for the benefit of the nation and it's people.

Please, lauding the achievements of a self confessed despot, sympathising with his "struggles" while ignoring those of the people he oppressed and forced to comply with his vision, is not a balanced view. Whether the end result is worth the real terror and physical pain he caused is a matter of opinion, but acknowledge all of what he did, not just the end result.

Singapore is in a do or die situation when he came to power and the measures he took are necessary to clean up society and get back to work. The rounding up of dissidents might be bad in the west, but subversives are detrimental to the growth of a nation economically.
@@dragonfastback5440 well my grandfather always tells me that before LKY there was like constant gang violence to the point that the police didn't dare to do much and that the coffee shop that his father owned constantly had to pay protection money or get fucked so LKY made it a law that its the death penalty or something for any gang member or something yeah he was flawed and im sure that being called the godfather of modern singapore does get to your head but if he really was so selfish i doubt that singapore would be as safe and secure as it is today

As a Singaporean, this has brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for allowing me to revisit my country's history. Today, the land we stand on are built by the hard labor of our forefathers. I do understand that many foreign countries often view the policies made by LKY as authoritarian and "inhumane", but without him, we will not be where we are today. Because of his policies, people of different colors and ethnicity here in Singapore live together in harmony and are educated the importance of it since young. Today, we can all sleep soundly with our doors unlocked, without worrying about theft or robbery. And all these is only made possible by LKY. We are not a perfect nation and we do have flaws too, but i feel really blessed to be a Singaporean.

Policies such as little or zero taxes for business, and banning of unions, always goes hand in hand with a wonderful life for the wealthy, but a horrible life for the poor. I think what is most impressive is how he used a dictatorship to teach the people and avoid corruption. Usually, once the government has the power, it usually only looks to take more. In Singapore, they actually stopped to see where they could improve, and if it required the people to have some more control, so be it. The government acted like a stern parent and not a greedy businessman. You got spanked, you got told what to do, but it was with the aim of making you a productive citizen, not just to use you up and spit you out.
So Lee's policies includes 1. Eradication of slum by public housing, minimize private housing 2. Keep low to none tariff of goods, even gives tax holidays 3. Ban union 4. Make harsh punishment to corrupt official, sometimes death 5. But also giving high wage to goverment officials 6. Invest heavily, HEAVILY, on education 7. Profit oriented - state owned company This successfully made singapore rich and powerful Yet Indonesian govt did the exact opposite

In no time they were outdoing equivalent USA workers, and we could see the handwriting on the wall. Loved my time there and have many fond memories of kind and caring local people.

I just returned from my first visit to Singapore a few days ago and I was extremely impressed. The lack of goverment corruption and bureaucracy makes everything extremely efficient. From the time you arrive to the time you leave, you understand why it is called "the city of the future." Not because of self driving cars, robots, or things like that but because of the practical way the country is ran. All of the Singaporeans I met were extremely friendly and welcoming as well. I can't wait to return in the future.

Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. As a Malaysian, I truly admire Singapore, how the small country has became the most developed country in Southeast Asia. But honestly I feel attacked by the thumbnail 😅. I do believe my country is not poor. Not poor also not rich like our neighbours. I always wish that all countries in SEA will be prosperous together.

@@Hhhh22222-w Yeah you're right. However, what makes Singapore unique in my opinion is the odds it faced in the early days of its independence from Malaysia. The country survived and later cooperated with its hostile neighbors and grew to have a huge GDP. And all this happened in about 30 years. For a city state such an achievement is huge. But also the fact that it's a city state with a relatively small population definitely helped.

To Singapore success depended on one leader like Lee Kuan Yew. He alone among despots and dictators who didn't enrich himself. That kind of man can only be born once in thousand years (to quote Dragon Ball). So, yes, Singapore success cannot be replicated by other countries, especially countries with despot leaders. Or even by Singapore themselves, if they think it is okay to have despot leaders. Because somewhere down the line, they will meet bad despot.
Ah another economist. And probably @casual scholar is an economist, too. I wanted to write the same comment. PLUS, acknowledging the advantage western societies have in inheriting and refining over centuries the laws and constitutions of ancient Rome; and in comparison a guy like LKY or, say, Mao or Deng Xiaoping, learn about them in the West and then just try to implement what they then believed makes sense, in wildly different approaches, in societies that are so not ready for it.
I've had the privilege of visiting Singapore while in the military in the 80s and then working there as a civilian with a multinational in the early 2000s. What an amazing place. I loved every single day and month I spent there. The people were wonderful and I made a number of lifetime friends. I'm retired now but I will go back to visit as soon as I have the chance. Congratulations Singapore YOU ARE one of the greatest places in the world.
These days you get to see well fed and overpaid foreigners staying in all the upscale areas while many Singaporeans are starving and unemployed kept locked away from public view in their tiny holes called HDB.

HDBs are the public housing you see in Singapore, where it isn't like public housing in other nations, the country has actually invested into it and made it a cheap but very good place to live, with over 60% (or 80%, I forgot) choosing to live in HDBs

I just came back from Singapore. Most people have no idea how well this island is ruled. It's like coming back from another planet. Everything looks new, extremely well maintained and clean. People are respectful and hard working, and they enjoy a world class transportation system which looks pristine and is comfortable, the best gardens and public spaces in the world, the best airport in the world by far, fantastic public healthcare, the best banking system, high security, a world class education system, good wages, etc. The reason it works is because the economy there is geared towards the public, not diverted to benefit only a handful of billionaires. If it means that a little less democracy is necessary for it to work, so be it, the people there are among the luckiest in the world.
I lived in Singapore 🇸🇬 in 1992 and remember back then that they had a BNP per capita at ca USD 20K while Denmark 🇩🇰 was at 30K. I am truly amazed. Thank you for great content

Wow, this Lee Kuan Yew guy's capability is amazing. I'm only basing it from this video but it sounds like this guy and his political was really sharp, finding solutions for everything to make it into a productive country. I'm seeing some unfavorable comments about him but if you weigh out the good and the bad, he definitely did significant amount of good to the country. As a guy from Japan, this video was really informative to understand Singapore's upbringing. A little embarrassed that I didn't look this up before to be honest lol. In Japan it is quiet known how Singapore's a successful rich country, but I think the majority of us doesn't know how that happened. I can safely say, we are fortunate to have him as our pioneer leader..... Always felt safe walking alone in the middle of the night in any part of Sg..... Western media may call Lee Kuan Yew a dictator. But to me he is like a grandfather - he is always thinking of Singapore's survival every moment he is awake. He would think of what works for Singapore and implement it with an iron fist. For example, he thought it would be a good idea for Singapore to be a Garden City - that was way before sustainability and green were catchwords. Even today, there are plans to plan 1 million trees from 2020 to 2030. I am so blessed to be born here - there is no where like Singapore.

Singapore is also effective because it has only top down corruption and not bottom up. As an Aussie who went to school in Singapore from 1990-1999 I can honestly see the benefits of a more autocratic leader / party when done correctly with good planning and leadership. It feels more functional than a lot of democracies out there.
As a Singaporean, I would like to say that Malaysia is not poor. Malaysia is a very resource rich country and on their own merits have achieved much as well. Also comparing Malaysia to Singapore is literally like comparing California to New York City. Being so much bigger in size and population, Malaysia has many challenges Singapore does not have.
@@KeoNz logistics is just more difficult, more people to think about, control, monitor and take care of. More chance for disagreements, factionalism. And it’s harder to distribute resources amongst population. It’s why for example Luxembourg and Monaco are richer than France, Spain and the UK. Or why China and India are poorer than the US. Or why Hong Kong and macau are richer than China. Or why UAE and Qatar are richer than Saudi Arabia. Or why the Nordic countries are so rich. A small country/region with good leadership always has better chances for success.
@@KeoNz imagine the difficulty and sheer cost of building electrical, water, housing, education, transport etc infrastructures for people that live in vastly different parts of a country…mountain ranges, deep jungles, riverside, lakeside, coastal communities. Now imagine a country smaller than most capital cities where all the people live in already urbanised areas within few kilometres radius from each other at most. Which is less of a headache to develop? What should Malaysian leaders tell its citizens? Force them to leave their homes and move to the city? Then they would be labelled dictators like Stalin and Mao… Not to mention, Malaysia has to deal with extremely disadvantaged borders with difficult to patrol dense jungles and close proximities to less stable countries or communities with populations much larger than Malaysia itself, while Singapore is bordered by…fish lol.

Obviously SG currently is amazing and its success shouldn't be taken for granted, but it needs to continue to plan ahead with long term strategies that ensure its competitiveness generations into the future. Im not sure what policies our government will implement, but the self serving and somewhat arrogant nature of the young is already an impediment to our development. Then we have MNCs and rich businessmen to bow to. Even today, our continued economic success remains tenuous, we can only hope that SG continues to have leaders with the foresight to reform our economy and lay down the framework for the future.

I have a lot of respect for Lee kwan Yew, for his personal values and all that he did for his country. I am European though, which implies I am supposed to criticize his authoritarian regime. However, I'm not. He had no choice but to have an authoritarian rule not only to save his country but also to develop it. Today, Singapore is one of the richest countries in the world, and this is thanks to Lee Kwan Yew. He is a model for many leaders, which explains why he was consulted for advice by rulers such as Deng Xiaoping and Xi Jinping. What he achived is looks like a miracle, but it's not. What he did for Singapore worked because it was simply the best way to do in order to develop his country.

Fabulous video - very well researched. One thing to note is how happy and proud the vast majority of Singaporeans are. They know they live in a first world nation created by the hard work and genius of their founding fathers, and are incredibly proud of the fact.
Great video man. You did a great job of highlighting why it worked in Singapore but also shed light on why it might not work in bigger countries. What I find most interesting is that while the laws to clean up the nation were draconian in nature the state at the same time invested in its people and gave the people the ability to invest in themselves with the ownership of property. Also the government actively invested in its people with the development of education and infrastructure. While I don’t believe that all of Singapores policy’s could translate to another country the investment in its people, education, and infrastructure is surely something that I wish would be implemented in my country.

My boyfriend is Singaporean so I took an interest in Singapore's history. From such a dark, struggling and violent past to the thriving, rich nation today was certainly no easy feat. Though Lee Kuan Yew ruled with an iron fist like a dictator, he was doing so for the good of Singapore. In the end, it was massive success. The transformation of Singapore is so drastic that it's unreal. I hope Lee Kuan Yew is resting in peace while being proud of himself for turning this small, poverty stricken island into the prospering Singapore we know today.
LKY wasn't a dictator. Singaporeans chose him again and again as a leader for obvious reason. LKY should never be an example for people supporting dictatorship. He is a believer of democracy

I visited Singapore twice. I loved it. Singapore Airlines is absolutely one of the best in the world. I almost committed the crime of littering my first trip there. I decided to eat a Kraft caramel while my friend and I were walking on the sidewalk on Orchard Road. The little candy wrapper somehow slipped out of my hand. My friend and I started running after it so that we wouldn't get caught littering. Thank goodness I got the wrapper and put it in a trash receptacle. My friend and I laughed about that incident for years. We were on our Ps and Qs the whole time we were three. I would love to visit Singapore again some day.
I see. In the early years, when the country was a slum, the government had to be strict because people in that “pioneer” generation were uneducated and practiced uncivilised behaviour such as spitting, urinating / pooping in the streets etc. Imposing fines was a way to deter these behaviours. The generations that followed have been educated in schools about keeping the environment clean. If you visit Singapore today, you will still see litter around, but not so much. The government employs cleaners to sweep the streets and housing estates every day; thats also why the place is so clean. Its not that people are so afraid to litter. Growing up, I have never felt that my freedom was restricted in Singapore. On the contrary, I feel safe walking the streets at night and this let me feel more free than anywhere I've lived thus far (UK, Cambodia).

I'm from the Philippines and living in the US. I had the pleasure to visit Singapore for a couple of days and I loved it there. Most pinoys would vacation to the Philippines but I'd rather go to Singapore. Taiwan is great also.
Am a fourth generation Singaporean so my parents and grandparents lived through the development of Singapore. My grandmother lived through the Japanese Occupation of 1942-1945. Several of my granduncles were even killed by the Japanese. My parents lived in villages in their childhood, in attap houses. They bred chickens and sold vegetables at the market for a living. They told me they had to travel to school on dirt roads with little street lamps. Fast forward by one generation, Singapore is now 100% urbanised. The exact same places where the villages were are filled with modern skyscrapers and apartment buildings. Almost every Singaporean lives in houses that they own (albeit for 99 years for government housing). It's amazing how much we progressed in one generation.
Kudos to Singapore but the title and labelling of Malaysia as underdeveloped is frankly stupid . Malaysia is also prosperous and isn't a city state like Singapore is. Malaysia's per capita GDP by PPP terms is close to 30,000 dollars . Even in 1980 Malaysia's infrastructure was ranked in the A category by the World Bank the same as developed countries. This is by far the best video i have watched by any international source about singapore, and the way you've shown that singapore has been flawed, it was for good reason, and worked in the context of singapore alone. also, unions WERE banned, but now there is a union, called NTUC. it runs a large supermarket chain (and also it's nationalised lmao). you also have to consider the problems that our superior healthcare has caused: our rapidly aging population means there's an even larger emphasis on healthcare, and a large percentage of our population are not in the working class. this has sparked policies of re-employment of the older generation, and also, implementation of various employment policies which prioritise singaporeans (TAFEP). our lack of land has lead to reclamation efforts doubling down (with the building of terminal 5 of the changi airport, we'll have the first airport built on reclaimed land). speaking about the airport, the changi airport has been one of the best (if not the best) in the world for many many years. the emphasis on education has created a draconian curriculum, that while competitive, has increased adolescent stress and depression rates exponentially. An estimated 50% of all Singaporean teens are suffering from depression, largely due to the highly rigorous and demanding curriculum. singapore is an incredibly multifaceted society which has been forced to walk the tightrope since the very beginning, in the context of the cold war when it gained independence. it traded with the soviet union, rejected western influence, (so it could join the UN, and maintain US interest in the region) and formed ASEAN (to gain an equal say in the region, prevent the vastly larger Indonesia from gaining unparalleled power within SEA) in order to maintain its fragile sovereignty, and it would not have been possible without LKY.

At the same time, it views China, a currently authoritarian regime, as the greatest threat to its existence, especially militarily.
the reality is never just pure black and white. there are facets of LKY's leadership that were birthed in the styles of western leaders. for example, he deeply admired Margaret Thatcher and learnt from her hard-line stance against big unions and the welfare state. the difference is that he had more direct control over the evolving political landscape, compared with mature democracies. were Singapore in a situation like many nations find themselves in today, partisan and leaders lacking political staying power, he would not have managed it half as well as he did.
At the same time, whether a country prospers or fails post independence depends a lot on its own leaders. I hear a lot of blame being put on the West for today's problems faced by many former colonial nations, but many of its own current problems were caused by the mismanagement & corruption of its own leaders, some of which started decades after independence.

Singapore leaders from LKY to LHL are clean honest and hardworking. They focus on the best governance for Singapore and its people. It is not surprising that Singapore has become what it is today.
Speaking as a PR of Singapore, it always staggers me that there are many local Singaporeans who will complain about the government and complain about price of housing, cars and cost of living. They have clearly not lived in any other country where personal income + sales taxes are almost 50% and government officials are basically inept and/or corrupt. The current generation of Singaporeans certainly have it "easy" and the current setup handed to them, without the hardship. It's not perfect, but it is many many times better than its Asian neighbours, and even western countries.
No wonder you never let go of your foreign citizenship. After earning money working in Singapore, you will be heading off to live a live of luxury in your country. Smart joker lah you.
It's certainly not perfect n right to say it's better than some South East Asia countries..but in recent times the angst is that the locals are not benefitting in tandem with the wealth of the country. And from what I can see, it's not thru a lack of effort too. The perception is that the country has become too successful.
you mentioned 3 points where singapore "got lucky", it was a good summary but in my view i woudn't attribute them to luck alone. Thought that would be more accurate to say that it was 1) blessed with its geographic location (this was just the natural situation it was in and I wouldn't classify it as luck; it was more "lucky" in the sense that we had managed to identify and leverage on it to extract economic value, but that was also born out of smarts and not luck per se); 2) it fought hard to catch the wave of the economic growth (this was not luck, it was out of effort and sacrifice from the people at the time, and in the scheme of things economic waves happen all the time in different forms and industries depending on how you look at it), and 3) it only got lucky in having LKY leading it at that time (where he could have easily been "more corrupted" with power to the detriment of the country, and we got lucky that he had acted with great foresight, principles/integrity, and decisiveness). And also while LKY deserves much of the credit, the focus on him tends to overlook the other brilliant work done by other individuals, public agencies, and private citizens and businesses. I think it is worth emphasizing that it took concerted effort and it is not a one man job.
In reality, singapore is much developed than Malaysia, but singapore and malaysia relationship is highly related to each other in economic . Singapore is a success. Of most of the countries that were under British rule there are but a handful who have exceeded expectations to be a commercial, financial and civil success. Considering that Singapore had so little in terms of commodities they are the benchmark. Lee Kwan Yew legacy can't be questioned.

Lee Kuan Yew is a fascinating individual. He did what he had to do to make sure his country developed from a socially and economically suppressed state to a global financial and trading juggernaut.

Visited Singapore twice. This enlightening documentary about Singapore and its leader Lee Kuan Yew is great. The garden city is a great place to visit, except for costly hotels, it has highly developed transportation systems--airport, subways, buses, taxis. great food, friendly people, greenery … LKY who led this county and made it a highly developed country is an example for others to follow!!

Singapore buys water cheaply from Malaysia, but lets not conveniently forget, a portion of the water is treated and sold back to Malaysia at a loss. It cost Singapore $1.50 to treat the water and they sold back to Malaysia at $0.50. I doubt Singapore is collapsing. The exchange rate would state otherwise. S$1 : RM 3 plus. Mr LKY didn't do it alone. His team especially the late Mr Robert Goh Keng Swee. He was the brain for Singapore to prosper. He was the Singapore's economy genius at that time, when he was Finance Minister from 1967 to 1970. You should go and do a research on him Mr Casual Scholar.👍👍
Dutch economist Dr Albert Winsemius served as an economic adviser to Singapore between 1961 and 1984. He led the UN Survey Mission to Singapore and played a major role in the formulation of Singapore's national economic development strategy.
LKY had the vision, but he empowered his cabinet ministers, that included Goh Keng Swee, and permanent secretaries to implement the necessary strategies to achieve his goal for Singapore. There are good books on some of the individuals…Goh Keng Swee, S Rajaretnam, EW Barker, Sim Kee Boon….and a more recent book.. The Last Fools…The Eight Immortals of Lee Kuan Yew..covers some of the key civil servants who laid the foundation for Singapore’s success today. A very good read for young Singaporeans who grew up with all modern conveniences at hand, not knowing how we got here.,

There are so many nations that could leverage of their location to better their societies such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Djibouti, Yemen, Oman, the Philippines, Somalia, Iran, Egypt, Morocco, Cuba, and Panama but they are too corrupt, … not to mention countless others with vast amounts of resource wealth.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India is also in a strategic location. India should develop this archipelago. Then they can jump from 5th largest economy to 2nd largest.

The urban area populations with more access to the news and internet. hence the news about Najib wrong doing rapidly disseminate among those people. While the news of Najib siphoning the money through 1MDB has been spreading like wildfire internationally, surely it has tainted Malaysia's image in general. As for the rural area populations, they were still upholding Najib as a great leader that has propelled Malaysia to advancement. I am a 60's Aussi and I have had interactions with Singapore over the last 40+ years. I originally did'nt like Lee Kuan Yew, because of his views on hair and individual freedom. I was ignorant, probably racist and believed I knew everything about life. From my many business trips to Singapore I learnt that the Singaporeans were wonderful people, hard working, and absolutely honest. I also learnt that the Lee led government, thought strategically, and they were consistent, persistent and honest. I now look back and think what a fabulous leader was Lee Kuan Yew. Singaporeans deserve all the success they now have. I now believe Singapore is the model that all new (or old) republics should attempt to imitate. Bravo Singapore! I recommend everyone read Lee Kuan Yew's biography, he was a great man.
It may have been shocking to see a nation eject part of itself and forcibly give it 'independence'. But on hindsight, this act should be done more often to reduce the number of internal conflicts that would have torn the entire country apart. The reason for Singapore's ejection was because Lee Kuan Yew, the leader of Singapore which was a Malaysian state that had a large Chinese population wanted more equal rights for all the races in entire the country Malaysia, whereas the majority Malay population wanted to retain their special position being the natives of that country. Apart from the Malays and the Chinese, there were also a significant Indian population in Malaysia. Dragging it out could have resulted in a civil war like you see in so many countries all over the world. As it was there were already several racial riots in that country during those days in which many were killed. Today Malaysia and Singapore live peacefully with one another as neighbors with close social and economic cooperation rather than a squabbling family under one roof. Other countries should learn from this. This is not rocket science. If a married couple can't get along, then just get divorce and follow your own path. Why force yourself to live together in pain, misery and anger.
the Malaya leadership at that time saw LKY as a threat because they thought he would swing opinion not just of the majority Chinese population in Singapore, but also the Chinese in Malaya. What they wanted to happen was for Singapore to drown in its own poverty and then oust its leader. then they would just have to pick up the pieces at their leisure, with the Chinese at their mercy.

I first visited Singapore in 1972 at the age of 22. From a distance, I saw a space like structure which I later know that it's the immgration and custom departments. My first impression as I reached the Singapore end of the courseway and I noticed the sparkling clean waters on either side of the entrance. As I went into Singapore, I noticed lots of trees lining the roads. Flower plants on all the overhead bridges. Many high rise apartments and buildings. No rubbish to be found anywhere. I stayed in Kartong Hotel. I visited Senthosa Island and saw the historical Japanese museum. There was a musical fountain and an aromatic flower garden. I return by cable car and watched many ships below. From the seafront, I saw hundreds of ships. I visited the zoological garden and had snaps taken with a giant snake and also with and Orang Hutan. I visited all Singapore and it was very exciting and adventures. I am an admirer of Mr Lee Kuan Yew 🥰
Singapore believe everyone matters and all races are equal. While Malaysia think the native Malays have priority to other races. This fundamental disagreement caused their separation. Other country should learn this when it comes to diversity.
There is a social contract stated the priviledges of the Malay in the Federal Constition when the British forced the Malays to accept the Chinese and Indian immigrants to be the citizen of Malaya. If they want to go against that Constitution then they should not be admitted as citizens in the first place.
It's interesting that you point out how Singapore was weakest when it was divided into a multi-cultural society where each culture kept eachother at arms length and refused to share and become one culture. Plenty of valuable lessons there for the west that insist every group have their own flag, culture, laws and values.
Cultural integration isn't about forcing everyone to follow your customs, it's about respecting all ways of life as valid. Expecting everyone to pledge allegiance, go to a protestant church, and speak English is akin the Malays wanting a majority culturally Malay nation with or without Singapore in this story.
As a Singaporean, our multi-cultural society racial harmony is very much a lie, it's simply racial tolerance. Generally speaking, there is a lot of racism in this country, however racism in singapore far more subtle as being outwardly racist is looked down upon. One thing to add about the housing situation in Singapore is that they use land value taxation to incentivize efficient usage and organically control rents while helping to prevent unjust accumulation of unearned income siphoned from actually productive activity - something we should absolutely be doing everywhere else. @@jonestprades6520 For most things, when their prices go up their supply expands (more of it is produced and available on demand), because it becomes more profitable to make the thing and sell it. As more companies/individuals provide the good or the service, the price might come back down again, but now more people have access to it and there is more of it to go round, and more people make a living selling it, making everyone benefit. This applies for all goods and services, except for artificial monopolies (where prices are kept artificially high by the government banning all companies/persons from producing the good or providing the service except one) and -- importantly -- land. Land is something that you cannot produce more of. People might want to live in New York City because of good jobs, great opportunities, and lots of amenities (hospitals, performances, restaurants, childcare, schools etc.) but even when rents or housing prices rise, there will still be only one Brooklyn and one Upper East Side. Sure, more space around NYC may be converted to buildings, but this doesn't change the fact that there is a restriction in supply of land around NYC that companies/people cannot do anything about--I can't just found a business that makes land "magically" appear in desirable places to live. Also, the increase in land prices doesn't come from any kind of activity that the owners of the land have done. The reason why NYC is desirable is because of the people and the companies/businesses/government or other organisations providing jobs, goods and services there. The owners of the land just benefit from the fact that all those people provide their goods and services close to the land that they own. This means that they capture what economists call "rents"--they don't provide any value, just sit on the fact that they gatekeep access to some valued resource and charge others for using it. Another example of someone charging rent: say I own some land that has iron ore in it, and charge others to build a mine and mine the ore on my land. I am not responsible for making the ore available, or anything other work that increases the value of the ore by changing it to iron, then to steel products. I am not even contributing to the economy by investing in my own mine! I just gatekeep access to the ore and charge people. Economists find this "inefficient"--i.e., they think that rentiers are parasites on the economy--though you won't hear them use that word! :) This means that, as an economy gets more and more rich, more and more of its wealth will be spent on things that are like land, since you can't produce any more of it but people still compete with each other to buy it. This is actually happening--as a country gets richer, more and more of the total wealth of the country is in real estate (instead of productive things like companies, buildings, homes, machines, organizations, people and their education, skills and health), and more and more of the economic activity of rich countries is in the form of rents paid to landlords (instead of profits of companies, wages paid to workers, consumers buying products and services to improve their quality of life, or investments in banks, infrastructure, pension funds, the stock market, new businesses, and so on)... Because everything else is getting cheaper relative to wages (since you can produce more of it), people are getting wealthier (since there is more economic activity) but you can't produce more land and people still want to use their increased wealth to live in desirable places. If this sounds very depressing, join the Georgist movement! Read Progress and Poverty. Someone called George in the 19th century proposed that we tax land and land only and return all the rents on land to the public purse (i.e. the government) to be spent for all citizens. Workers should not be taxed, because they work for their wages and produce goods and services that each one of us consumes. Investors and capitalists should not be taxed because they take on risks (they may go bankrupt) to found new businesses, new technologies, and create employment. But landlords? They add nothing, and such rentiers should be taxed. Sounds reasonable if you ask me.

So what will the government do then? Confiscate land, which to me, sounds terrible. Also, this really only applies to cities and apartments. Think about a farmland owner. They own arable land but can’t afford to farm it because equipment costs and time. Think about a farmer. They own equipment to farm but can’t afford land. What happens? The landowner leases the land and the farmer gets to farm it. If the landowner can’t make money by leasing it, the landowner has no reason to use it. He will just hold on to it or sell it. The problem after that, is that only the rich can afford to buy that useless piece of land unless they farm it. Farmers aren’t rich. There are just so many problems with this Georgist idea.

As a Singaporean, I have mixed feelings about Lee Kuan Yew and his party. While he and his party has done a lot of good for Singapore, it is also important to be honest and transparent about the methods he used to achieve his goals. It is also useful to remember that not all of PAP policies worked. I think for Singapore to continue to prosper, we need to be able to be constructively critical about the government.
Singapore is one of the few countries where Dictatorship done right under a benevolent leader who has a vision and care for his people. LKY is an inspiration for many leaders today that failed to achieve what he can.

As a Singaporean, this has brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for allowing me to revisit my country's history. Today, the land we stand on are built by the hard labor of our forefathers. I do understand that many foreign countries often view the policies made by LKY as authoritarian and "inhumane", but without him, we will not be where we are today. Because of his policies, people of different colors and ethnicity here in Singapore live together in harmony and are educated the importance of it since young. Today, we can all sleep soundly with our doors unlocked, without worrying about theft or robbery. And all these is only made possible by LKY. We are not a perfect nation and we do have flaws too, but i feel really blessed to be a Singaporean.

I think what is most impressive is how he used a dictatorship to teach the people and avoid corruption. Usually, once the government has the power, it usually only looks to take more. In Singapore, they actually stopped to see where they could improve, and if it required the people to have some more control, so be it. The government acted like a stern parent and not a greedy businessman. You got spanked, you got told what to do, but it was with the aim of making you a productive citizen, not just to use you up and spit you out.

lived & worked in SGP in 1969-70, was one of the first Us technology companies there. The local workforce was amazinggly productive; hardworking, and willing to try whatever was being taught. In no time they were outdoing equivalent USA workers, and we could see the handwriting on the wall. Loved my time there and have many fond memories of kind and caring local people.

I just returned from my first visit to Singapore a few days ago and I was extremely impressed. The lack of goverment corruption and bureaucracy makes everything extremely efficient. From the time you arrive to the time you leave, you understand why it is called "the city of the future." Not because of self driving cars, robots, or things like that but because of the practical way the country is ran. All of the Singaporeans I met were extremely friendly and welcoming as well. I can't wait to return in the future.

Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.

Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).
Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning!
Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.
It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them.

@@Hhhh22222-w Yeah you're right. However, what makes Singapore unique in my opinion is the odds it faced in the early days of its independence from Malaysia. The country survived and later cooperated with its hostile neighbors and grew to have a huge GDP. And all this happened in about 30 years. For a city state such an achievement is huge. But also the fact that it's a city state with a relatively small population definitely helped.

I've had the privilege of visiting Singapore while in the military in the 80s and then working there as a civilian with a multinational in the early 2000s. What an amazing place. I loved every single day and month I spent there. The people were wonderful and I made a number of lifetime friends. I'm retired now but I will go back to visit as soon as I have the chance. Congratulations Singapore YOU ARE one of the greatest places in the world.
These days you get to see well fed and overpaid foreigners staying in all the upscale areas while many Singaporeans are starving and unemployed kept locked away from public view in their tiny holes called HDB.

I just came back from Singapore. Most people have no idea how well this island is ruled. It's like coming back from another planet. Everything looks new, extremely well maintained and clean. People are respectful and hard working, and they enjoy a world class transportation system which looks pristine and is comfortable, the best gardens and public spaces in the world, the best airport in the world by far, fantastic public healthcare, the best banking system, high security, a world class education system, good wages, etc. The reason it works is because the economy there is geared towards the public, not diverted to benefit only a handful of billionaires. If it means that a little less democracy is necessary for it to work, so be it, the people there are among the luckiest in the world.
I lived in Singapore 🇸🇬 in 1992 and remember back then that they had a BNP per capita at ca USD 20K while Denmark 🇩🇰 was at 30K. I am truly amazed. Thank you for great content

Wow, this Lee Kuan Yew guy's capability is amazing. I'm only basing it from this video but it sounds like this guy and his political was really sharp, finding solutions for everything to make it into a productive country. I'm seeing some unfavorable comments about him but if you weigh out the good and the bad, he definitely did significant amount of good to the country.
As a guy from Japan, this video was really informative to understand Singapore's upbringing. A little embarrassed that I didn't look this up before to be honest lol. Western media may call Lee Kuan Yew a dictator. But to me he is like a grandfather - he is always thinking of Singapore's survival every moment he is awake. He would think of what works for Singapore and implement it with an iron fist. Even today, there are plans to plan 1 million trees from 2020 to 2030. I am so blessed to be born here - there is no where like Singapore.

As an Aussie who went to school in Singapore from 1990-1999 I can honestly see the benefits of a more autocratic leader / party when done correctly with good planning and leadership. It feels more functional than a lot of democracies out there.

As a Singaporean, I would like to say that Malaysia is not poor. Malaysia is a very resource rich country and on their own merits have achieved much as well.
Also comparing Malaysia to Singapore is literally like comparing California to New York City. Being so much bigger in size and population, Malaysia has many challenges Singapore does not have.

Or why UAE and Qatar are richer than Saudi Arabia. Or why the Nordic countries are so rich. A small country/region with good leadership always has better chances for success.

@@KeoNz imagine the difficulty and sheer cost of building electrical, water, housing, education, transport etc infrastructures for people that live in vastly different parts of a country…mountain ranges, deep jungles, riverside, lakeside, coastal communities. Now imagine a country smaller than most capital cities where all the people live in already urbanised areas within few kilometres radius from each other at most. Which is less of a headache to develop? What should Malaysian leaders tell its citizens? Force them to leave their homes and move to the city? Then they would be labelled dictators like Stalin and Mao…
Not to mention, Malaysia has to deal with extremely disadvantaged borders with difficult to patrol dense jungles and close proximities to less stable countries or communities with populations much larger than Malaysia itself, while Singapore is bordered by…fish lol.

Singapore has been going downhill for the past 15 years. The culture is changing. It has the world`s highest gini coefficient in the developed countries, just after Hong Kong. That means it is a very unequal income distribution countries. Some people are benefitting more than the majority of the people.

Obviously SG currently is amazing and its success shouldn't be taken for granted, but it needs to continue to plan ahead with long term strategies that ensure its competitiveness generations into the future. Im not sure what policies our government will implement, but the self serving and somewhat arrogant nature of the young is already an impediment to our development. Then we have MNCs and rich businessmen to bow to. Even today, our continued economic success remains tenuous, we can only hope that SG continues to have leaders with the foresight to reform our economy and lay down the framework for the future.
Eradicate corruption, put good smart people with integrity to lead and rally the people to work together for the good of all. The rest is history. I was there in the 60s and still there now. It wasn't easy in the beginning. In the 60s and 70s, we were so poor that sometimes my family of 6 were eating plain porridge with soya sauce. We studied and work very hard to get here.

However, I'm not. He had no choice but to have an authoritarian rule not only to save his country but also to develop it. Fabulous video - very well researched. One thing to note is how happy and proud the vast majority of Singaporeans are. They know they live in a first world nation created by the hard work and genius of their founding fathers, and are incredibly proud of the fact.
Great video man. You did a great job of highlighting why it worked in Singapore but also shed light on why it might not work in bigger countries. What I find most interesting is that while the laws to clean up the nation were draconian in nature the state at the same time invested in its people and gave the people the ability to invest in themselves with the ownership of property. Also the government actively invested in its people with the development of education and infrastructure. While I don’t believe that all of Singapores policy’s could translate to another country the investment in its people, education, and infrastructure is surely something that I wish would be implemented in my country.

Famously, Lee Kuan Yew refused a huge bribe/ "political donation" from the American CIA. Doing so resulted in puppet leaders that impoverish a nation/people - look at Taiwan (with it's terrible wages) or Afghanistan as an example.

My boyfriend is Singaporean so I took an interest in Singapore's history. From such a dark, struggling and violent past to the thriving, rich nation today was certainly no easy feat. Though Lee Kuan Yew ruled with an iron fist like a dictator, he was doing so for the good of Singapore. In the end, it was massive success. The transformation of Singapore is so drastic that it's unreal. Read Stan Sesser’s “A Nation of Contradictions” in _The New Yorker_ or as a chapter in the book _The Lands of Charm and Cruelty._ It‘s 30 years old at this point and, therefore, dated in parts, but it‘s still a great and fascinating overview of the development of modern Singapore and the part that Lee Kuan Yew played in it, both the positive and negative aspects. It covers a lot of what is in the video here but in more detail, as well as other topics (such as the treatment of the opposition) not covered.

I visited Singapore twice. I loved it. Singapore Airlines is absolutely one of the best in the world. I almost committed the crime of littering my first trip there. I decided to eat a Kraft caramel while my friend and I were walking on the sidewalk on Orchard Road. The little candy wrapper somehow slipped out of my hand. My friend and I started running after it so that we wouldn't get caught littering. Thank goodness I got the wrapper and put it in a trash receptacle. My friend and I laughed about that incident for years. We were on our Ps and Qs the whole time we were three. I would love to visit Singapore again some day.

I see. In the early years, when the country was a slum, the government had to be strict because people in that “pioneer” generation were uneducated and practiced uncivilised behaviour such as spitting, urinating / pooping in the streets etc. Imposing fines was a way to deter these behaviours. The generations that followed have been educated in schools about keeping the environment clean.
If you visit Singapore today, you will still see litter around, but not so much. The government employs cleaners to sweep the streets and housing estates every day; thats also why the place is so clean. Its not that people are so afraid to litter. I was born in Singapore in 1979 btw.

Growing up, I have never felt that my freedom was restricted in Singapore. On the contrary, I feel safe walking the streets at night and this let me feel more free than anywhere I've lived thus far (UK, Cambodia).

I'm from the Philippines and living in the US. I had the pleasure to visit Singapore for a couple of days and I loved it there. Most pinoys would vacation to the Philippines but I'd rather go to Singapore. Taiwan is great also.

Am a fourth generation Singaporean so my parents and grandparents lived through the development of Singapore. My grandmother lived through the Japanese Occupation of 1942-1945. Several of my granduncles were even killed by the Japanese. My parents lived in villages in their childhood, in attap houses. They bred chickens and sold vegetables at the market for a living. They told me they had to travel to school on dirt roads with little street lamps. Fast forward by one generation, Singapore is now 100% urbanised. The exact same places where the villages were are filled with modern skyscrapers and apartment buildings. Almost every Singaporean lives in houses that they own (albeit for 99 years for government housing). It's amazing how much we progressed in one generation.

Kudos to Singapore but the title and labelling of Malaysia as underdeveloped is frankly stupid . Malaysia is also prosperous and isn't a city state like Singapore is. Malaysia's per capita GDP by PPP terms is close to 30,000 dollars . Even in 1980 Malaysia's infrastructure was ranked in the A category by the World Bank the same as developed countries. This is by far the best video i have watched by any international source about singapore, and the way you've shown that singapore has been flawed, it was for good reason, and worked in the context of singapore alone. also, unions WERE banned, but now there is a union, called NTUC. it runs a large supermarket chain (and also it's nationalised lmao).
you also have to consider the problems that our superior healthcare has caused: our rapidly aging population means there's an even larger emphasis on healthcare, and a large percentage of our population are not in the working class. this has sparked policies of re-employment of the older generation, and also, implementation of various employment policies which prioritise singaporeans (TAFEP). our lack of land has lead to reclamation efforts doubling down (with the building of terminal 5 of the changi airport, we'll have the first airport built on reclaimed land). speaking about the airport, the changi airport has been one of the best (if not the best) in the world for many many years. the emphasis on education has created a draconian curriculum, that while competitive, has increased adolescent stress and depression rates exponentially. An estimated 50% of all Singaporean teens are suffering from depression, largely due to the highly rigorous and demanding curriculum.
singapore is an incredibly multifaceted society which has been forced to walk the tightrope since the very beginning, in the context of the cold war when it gained independence. it traded with the soviet union, rejected western influence, (so it could join the UN, and maintain US interest in the region) and formed ASEAN (to gain an equal say in the region, prevent the vastly larger Indonesia from gaining unparalleled power within SEA) in order to maintain its fragile sovereignty, and it would not have been possible without LKY.

Great video. I appreciate the reflection at the end. It’s important to note that we in the west are benefiting from centuries of development in our economies and our ideals. It’s insane to expect developing nations to do the same within one generation. Singapore is the exception, not the rule.

the reality is never just pure black and white. there are facets of LKY's leadership that were birthed in the styles of western leaders. for example, he deeply admired Margaret Thatcher and learnt from her hard-line stance against big unions and the welfare state. the difference is that he had more direct control over the evolving political landscape, compared with mature democracies. were Singapore in a situation like many nations find themselves in today, partisan and leaders lacking political staying power, he would not have managed it half as well as he did.
At the same time, whether a country prospers or fails post independence depends a lot on its own leaders. I hear a lot of blame being put on the West for today's problems faced by many former colonial nations, but many of its own current problems were caused by the mismanagement & corruption of its own leaders, some of which started decades after independence.

Singapore leaders from LKY to LHL are clean honest and hardworking. They focus on the best governance for Singapore and its people. It is not surprising that Singapore has become what it is today.
Speaking as a PR of Singapore, it always staggers me that there are many local Singaporeans who will complain about the government and complain about price of housing, cars and cost of living. They have clearly not lived in any other country where personal income + sales taxes are almost 50% and government officials are basically inept and/or corrupt. The current generation of Singaporeans certainly have it "easy" and the current setup handed to them, without the hardship. It's not perfect, but it is many many times better than its Asian neighbours, and even western countries.
That's why you are a PR not a Citizen.

It's certainly not perfect n right to say it's better than some South East Asia countries..but in recent times the angst is that the locals are not benefitting in tandem with the wealth of the country. And from what I can see, it's not thru a lack of effort too. The perception is that the country has become too successful.
you mentioned 3 points where singapore "got lucky", it was a good summary but in my view i woudn't attribute them to luck alone. Thought that would be more accurate to say that it was
1) blessed with its geographic location (this was just the natural situation it was in and I wouldn't classify it as luck; it was more "lucky" in the sense that we had managed to identify and leverage on it to extract economic value, but that was also born out of smarts and not luck per se);
2) it fought hard to catch the wave of the economic growth (this was not luck, it was out of effort and sacrifice from the people at the time, and in the scheme of things economic waves happen all the time in different forms and industries depending on how you look at it),
and 3) it only got lucky in having LKY leading it at that time (where he could have easily been "more corrupted" with power to the detriment of the country, and we got lucky that he had acted with great foresight, principles/integrity, and decisiveness).
And also while LKY deserves much of the credit, the focus on him tends to overlook the other brilliant work done by other individuals, public agencies, and private citizens and businesses. I think it is worth emphasizing that it took concerted effort and it is not a one man job.

Singapore is a success. Of most of the countries that were under British rule there are but a handful who have exceeded expectations to be a commercial, financial and civil success. Considering that Singapore had so little in terms of commodities they are the benchmark.

Visited Singapore twice. This enlightening documentary about Singapore and its leader Lee Kuan Yew is great. The garden city is a great place to visit, except for costly hotels, it has highly developed transportation systems--airport, subways, buses, taxis. great food, friendly people, greenery … LKY who led this county and made it a highly developed country is an example for others to follow!!

This Western criminalilty occured across its pre- and during colonial era until today who were not only thievery, but deadly across South to North Americas, and stolen Australia and New Zealands from Asian Natives and so on. Singapore buys water cheaply from Malaysia, but lets not conveniently forget, a portion of the water is treated and sold back to Malaysia at a loss. It cost Singapore $1.50 to treat the water and they sold back to Malaysia at $0.50.

He was the brain for Singapore to prosper. He was the Singapore's economy genius at that time, when he was Finance Minister from 1967 to 1970.

LKY had the vision, but he empowered his cabinet ministers, that included Goh Keng Swee, and permanent secretaries to implement the necessary strategies to achieve his goal for Singapore. There are good books on some of the individuals…Goh Keng Swee, S Rajaretnam, EW Barker, Sim Kee Boon….and a more recent book.. The Last Fools…The Eight Immortals of Lee Kuan Yew..covers some of the key civil servants who laid the foundation for Singapore’s success today. A very good read for young Singaporeans who grew up with all modern conveniences at hand, not knowing how we got here.,

The urban area populations with more access to the news and internet. hence the news about Najib wrong doing rapidly disseminate among those people. While the news of Najib siphoning the money through 1MDB has been spreading like wildfire internationally, surely it has tainted Malaysia's image in general.
As for the rural area populations, they were still upholding Najib as a great leader that has propelled Malaysia to advancement. Najib still has the positive image that was created by his father, the 2nd Prime Minister (Mr. Tun Abdul Razak), who was combating poverty and inequalities through various programs. They didnt have much access to the worldwide news. Plus, money is always equal to power. Najib has a lot of petty cash and he could just have bought them with cash

I wish this video covered the other people who were just as critical to Singapore's success as LKY was. This is often overlooked in our history.

I am a 60's Aussi and I have had interactions with Singapore over the last 40+ years.
I originally did'nt like Lee Kuan Yew, because of his views on hair and individual freedom. I was ignorant, probably racist and believed I knew everything about life.
From my many business trips to Singapore I learnt that the Singaporeans were wonderful people, hard working, and absolutely honest.
I also learnt that the Lee led government, thought strategically, and they were consistent, persistent and honest.
I now look back and think what a fabulous leader was Lee Kuan Yew.
Singaporeans deserve all the success they now have.
I now believe Singapore is the model that all new (or old) republics should attempt to imitate. Bravo Singapore!

It may have been shocking to see a nation eject part of itself and forcibly give it 'independence'. But on hindsight, this act should be done more often to reduce the number of internal conflicts that would have torn the entire country apart. The reason for Singapore's ejection was because Lee Kuan Yew, the leader of Singapore which was a Malaysian state that had a large Chinese population wanted more equal rights for all the races in entire the country Malaysia, whereas the majority Malay population wanted to retain their special position being the natives of that country. Apart from the Malays and the Chinese, there were also a significant Indian population in Malaysia. Dragging it out could have resulted in a civil war like you see in so many countries all over the world. As it was there were already several racial riots in that country during those days in which many were killed. Today Malaysia and Singapore live peacefully with one another as neighbors with close social and economic cooperation rather than a squabbling family under one roof. Other countries should learn from this. This is not rocket science. If a married couple can't get along, then just get divorce and follow your own path. Why force yourself to live together in pain, misery and anger.

the Malaya leadership at that time saw LKY as a threat because they thought he would swing opinion not just of the majority Chinese population in Singapore, but also the Chinese in Malaya. What they wanted to happen was for Singapore to drown in its own poverty and then oust its leader. then they would just have to pick up the pieces at their leisure, with the Chinese at their mercy.

It's actually reasonable, think about it. Malaysia produces using its natural resources and if the ringgit is too high, it's very hard for them to sell and get enough profit.

I'm full heartedly NOT agree with this video's main narrative which is sounded like a Singaporean success 'it was because' and have to do with Lee's authoritarian. There were SO MANY other humility factors that made Singapore as success story as Singaporeans today because of a strong man yet equity, smart and very talented Lee Kuan Yew. As Lee was no where vicious and deadly dictator compared to George Washington and his peers who slaughtered the mass of Native Americans before it stole from them and independent its stolen land called USA. This Western criminalilty occured across its pre- and during colonial era until today who were not only thievery, but deadly across South to North Americas, and stolen Australia and New Zealands from Asian Natives and so on. I think this video's host or content creator should put the mirror on himself and how morally to reflect on others from his systemic racist or racism and continued to behave as a European privileged White upon other's second class or less worth of human beings!
Rwanda's current dictator is trying to emulate Singapore in Africa. Its only been a few decades since the Rwandan genocide, but already Rwanda is one of the wealthier and more stable Central African countries. Rwanda is also arguably the most refugee friendly country in the world, but its partly so refugee friendly for practical purposes (New brains, new labor, make financial deals with western countries in exchange for refugees, etc.)

Error - chewing gum ban came much later in the mid 80s, not in the early stages of Singapore's development. There is no public caning, its held indoors and not for all to see. The hardline tactics are not dissimilar to China now, it proved to be good in the long run as opposed to what we see now in Western countries which is deteriorating fast
I first visited Singapore in 1972 at the age of 22. From a distance, I saw a space like structure which I later know that it's the immgration and custom departments. My first impression as I reached the Singapore end of the courseway and I noticed the sparkling clean waters on either side of the entrance. As I went into Singapore, I noticed lots of trees lining the roads. Flower plants on all the overhead bridges. Many high rise apartments and buildings. No rubbish to be found anywhere. I stayed in Kartong Hotel. I visited Senthosa Island and saw the historical Japanese museum. There was a musical fountain and an aromatic flower garden. I return by cable car and watched many ships below. From the seafront, I saw hundreds of ships. I visited the zoological garden and had snaps taken with a giant snake and also with and Orang Hutan. I visited all Singapore and it was very exciting and adventures. I am an admirer of Mr Lee Kuan Yew 🥰

Singapore is proof that a country can flourish under good leadership, even when it used to be very poor.

Singapore believe everyone matters and all races are equal. While Malaysia think the native Malays have priority to other races. This fundamental disagreement caused their separation. Other country should learn this when it comes to diversity.

There is a social contract stated the priviledges of the Malay in the Federal Constition when the British forced the Malays to accept the Chinese and Indian immigrants to be the citizen of Malaya.

It's interesting that you point out how Singapore was weakest when it was divided into a multi-cultural society where each culture kept eachother at arms length and refused to share and become one culture. Plenty of valuable lessons there for the west that insist every group have their own flag, culture, laws and values.
Cultural integration isn't about forcing everyone to follow your customs, it's about respecting all ways of life as valid. Expecting everyone to pledge allegiance, go to a protestant church, and speak English is akin the Malays wanting a majority culturally Malay nation with or without Singapore in this story.

As a Singaporean, our multi-cultural society racial harmony is very much a lie, it's simply racial tolerance.
Generally speaking, there is a lot of racism in this country, however racism in singapore far more subtle as being outwardly racist is looked down upon. Generally speaking, those who are racist tend to keep to themselves rather than provoke others.
I personally don't believe that there is any way that people can truly coexist what the west can learn is that to truly achieve some level or tolerance, you have force people to interact with each other. In singapore, there is of racial quota where you can only have a maximum number of a certain race to achieve some level of cohesion

One thing to add about the housing situation in Singapore is that they use land value taxation to incentivize efficient usage and organically control rents while helping to prevent unjust accumulation of unearned income siphoned from actually productive activity - something we should absolutely be doing everywhere else.

@@jonestprades6520 For most things, when their prices go up their supply expands (more of it is produced and available on demand), because it becomes more profitable to make the thing and sell it. As more companies/individuals provide the good or the service, the price might come back down again, but now more people have access to it and there is more of it to go round, and more people make a living selling it, making everyone benefit. This applies for all goods and services, except for artificial monopolies (where prices are kept artificially high by the government banning all companies/persons from producing the good or providing the service except one) and -- importantly -- land. Land is something that you cannot produce more of. People might want to live in New York City because of good jobs, great opportunities, and lots of amenities (hospitals, performances, restaurants, childcare, schools etc.) but even when rents or housing prices rise, there will still be only one Brooklyn and one Upper East Side. Sure, more space around NYC may be converted to buildings, but this doesn't change the fact that there is a restriction in supply of land around NYC that companies/people cannot do anything about--I can't just found a business that makes land "magically" appear in desirable places to live. Also, the increase in land prices doesn't come from any kind of activity that the owners of the land have done. The reason why NYC is desirable is because of the people and the companies/businesses/government or other organisations providing jobs, goods and services there. The owners of the land just benefit from the fact that all those people provide their goods and services close to the land that they own. This means that they capture what economists call "rents"--they don't provide any value, just sit on the fact that they gatekeep access to some valued resource and charge others for using it. Another example of someone charging rent: say I own some land that has iron ore in it, and charge others to build a mine and mine the ore on my land. I am not responsible for making the ore available, or anything other work that increases the value of the ore by changing it to iron, then to steel products. I am not even contributing to the economy by investing in my own mine! I just gatekeep access to the ore and charge people. Economists find this "inefficient"--i.e., they think that rentiers are parasites on the economy--though you won't hear them use that word! :) This means that, as an economy gets more and more rich, more and more of its wealth will be spent on things that are like land, since you can't produce any more of it but people still compete with each other to buy it. This is actually happening--as a country gets richer, more and more of the total wealth of the country is in real estate (instead of productive things like companies, buildings, homes, machines, organizations, people and their education, skills and health), and more and more of the economic activity of rich countries is in the form of rents paid to landlords (instead of profits of companies, wages paid to workers, consumers buying products and services to improve their quality of life, or investments in banks, infrastructure, pension funds, the stock market, new businesses, and so on)... Because everything else is getting cheaper relative to wages (since you can produce more of it), people are getting wealthier (since there is more economic activity) but you can't produce more land and people still want to use their increased wealth to live in desirable places. If this sounds very depressing, join the Georgist movement! Read Progress and Poverty. Someone called George in the 19th century proposed that we tax land and land only and return all the rents on land to the public purse (i.e. the government) to be spent for all citizens. Workers should not be taxed, because they work for their wages and produce goods and services that each one of us consumes. Investors and capitalists should not be taxed because they take on risks (they may go bankrupt) to found new businesses, new technologies, and create employment. But landlords? They add nothing, and such rentiers should be taxed. Sounds reasonable if you ask me.
And not only this, but one hundred percent of their rents should be taxed!
@@roraimarain4310 that doesn’t sound so great though. That would make it so renters have no reason to rent out their land, as they can’t make money for it but still have to upkeep it. So what will the government do then? Confiscate land, which to me, sounds terrible. Also, this really only applies to cities and apartments. Think about a farmland owner. They own arable land but can’t afford to farm it because equipment costs and time. Think about a farmer. They own equipment to farm but can’t afford land. What happens? The landowner leases the land and the farmer gets to farm it. If the landowner can’t make money by leasing it, the landowner has no reason to use it. He will just hold on to it or sell it. The problem after that, is that only the rich can afford to buy that useless piece of land unless they farm it. Farmers aren’t rich. There are just so many problems with this Georgist idea.
