I like to imagine that after the Doctor sees someone die for them, sacrifice themselves, that the Doctor goes back a week or a month, and they give that person a perfect day. Not anything that would put them on a different path, but a day where everything just works or where they find an old treasure they lost long ago. It's never enough to remove the guilt, but it feels worse to do nothing at all.

That last line. Oh, that was brilliant... This is why Time Lords have two hearts: they see so much, live through so much, one heart is not enough to contain all the pain and the joy, the love and the hatred, the happiness and the sorrow, the mercy and the anger they feel.
