John Wayne was a great actor. He made a lot of great movies and I'm sure he loved this great country, but when given the opportunity to serve he dodged military service.
He didn't dodge anything; Duke was never drafted. John Ford promised him a place in his Army Signal Corps group but never delivered. Studio contracts also hamstrung him. I'm a combat veteran myself and I'm telling you straight up that military service isn't the measure of a man. Duke was a hero and did more for servicemen and veterans than just about anyone. He loved and supported us publicly when almost nobody else in Hollyweird would.

It was the company he was contracted with that threatened to sue Wayne if he broke his contract and even went on their own to request themselves that Wayne not be drafted. Wayne never had a knee deferment I was wrong about that but he never “asked” for a deferment nor was he a coward. He was very troubled by the fact he didn’t get to serve overseas for the rest of his life. Yes he could’ve backed out of his contract and enlisted in the normal army but he never did and he regretted that the rest of his life.
