In 1971, I just arrived in California. My first job was as a page at NBC. My first day on the job and my first assignment was working on the Dean Martin Show. Just a year before, I was in Pittsburgh, Pa tending bar and watching the Dean Martin show. After a few months in Calif, I arrived at the studio a half hour early. When I got to the hallway, I saw Jonathan Winters. I spent the most interesting half hour of my life talking to this man. Although I never spoke to Mr. Martin, I did have a wonderful conversation with Mr. Winters. He was a wonderful, nice man...what a memory for me.
I will never tire of this genius. As astonishingly brilliant as Robin Williams was, God Bless his soul... Williams owes so, so much to the inspiration of Winters. (Dean Martin is one of the greatest straight men who has ever lived.) (Addendum, 3 years later) I recently saw an interview with one of Dino's producers, and he said something along the lines of, "There were two frequently-appearing performers on the show who we never wrote for, who had blank cue cards: Don Rickles and Jonathan Winters."
Love watching this over and over and love it just as much every time. Dean's laughter makes me laugh every time. He was an absolutely amazing man, and Jonathan was just as amazing. They worked so well together to provide so much entertainment for us. Two incredible men.
This was one of countless things that made growing up in the 70s and 80s a real treasure. We never had to apologize for anything, well most everything was great, I'll leave y'all with that thought.
Why this works is because Dean Martin never rehearsed. He went into every skit cold. He didn't want to know what his guests had planned so his reaction would be genuine. When you see Dean cracking up, that's spontaneous. That's really Dean. This may have come out of his days in the Rat Pack where everything was done on the fly. Totally improvisational. Of course the Jedi Master of improvisation was Jonathan Winters.
@@toniwilson1579 That's why Dean & Jerry parted. Dean couldn't reach his potential with a script doing comedy. Imagine if Jerry hadn't written all their scripts.
@@moonlanding-69 Dean & Jerry started off very young but Jerry, despite being still a teenager, grew up in comedy with his parents. Dean went along until both started to grow on different directions. Dean wanted to do some serious acting & Jerry got interested in learning what was behind the camera. Plus, people started to get into ear of each of them telling them they would be better off alone. It didn't matter. When they parted they were at the top of their game with contract that today would be closer to billion than millions. Once on their own they excelled. Jerry made a name for himself in how he helped create the instant video playback while filming plus many innovations. Here we go again. When Dean says "I don't kiss and glide" you don't think that was in a written script, written by writers on the show? As was every single question Dean asked Jonathan. It's a skit. It's written by writers. You can ad-lib within the skit but Dean knew exactly what questions to ask because he knew exactly what his guest had planned. It's possible he didn't rehearse it. But it's still a planned skit
once you go back to the seventies, one can't even remember this Robin Williams fellow, or feel the urge to see him again. Rowan&Martin, Dean, Rickles. I wanna go back in time.
Yeah, we'll never have the likes of performers such as these ever again. I mean for example can you imagine when chris rock was just hosting the recent oscars?.when bob hope was the oscar host to end all oscar hosts.
Excellent. Being from the UK, I only ever knew Mr Winters from seeing him in "Mad, Mad....World" and loved his performance as the truck driver. Apparently, he used to keep fellow cast members in stitches during breaks from filming. It is only recently that I have discovered just how good an improvisor he was.
My dad and I watched Dean Martin every week. Everyone young and old seemed to love his show. A lot of the humor went way over my head then. Great, friendly comedian and person.
Wonderful to see the full length version of this, only seen the version that is cut after 'She was naughty!'. One of the best eleven minutes in all television.
THIS is what influenced and inspired the late great Robin Williams’ comedy. You can see immediately the similarities of Johnathan’s comedic approach with that of Robin’s. Absolute genius! BTW, for those who did not get it, what really killed Dean in this skit was Winter’s blurting out “She was Horny!”, and was dubbed over by censors as “naughty”.
Jonathan Winters was always comedy gold. He even did a few serious rolls (great on a Twilight Zone episode - played it totally straight). What a Genius!
I know Jonathan kept on ad libing until Dean just couldn't stand it. I love them together. Of course Jonathan with Robin Williams, that's a fire you can't put out. Check out some of their work too!
In the early 60s Jonathan Winters was in a major comedy called It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad world filled with the most famous comedians of the day. Interview, after interview with the best of the best, of the comedy world said no one on the set was funnier than this man. He was known to ad-lib "funny" hours at a time.
I meet Jonathan in 1981.he was chatting with the gas station owner smoking his cigar wearing coveralls I was near the studios in cally I had to get fuel I said hey to him and got him to sign his name I still have it nice guy
I noticed him from either it's a mad mad mad mad world, highly considered of the greatest film comedies ever made.(i proudly own the criterion dvd/blu-ray. or seeing his 2000 bio/doc the unknown jonathan winters: on the ledge. which i also own. the doc gives a really good account of his unique and original genius as a comic who marched to his own drummer.
I love the fact that while there are some jokes I don't get that get a laugh, there are some genius jokes in there by Jonathan that by the (lack of) sounds of it go way over the audience. What a guy. Make you realize he's ahead of his time here.
Probably because the real words were cut-out. Dean didn't say 'cheeks' and JW didn't say 'naughty!' You can see Dean's worried look in the very last seconds of the clip as he looks over wondering how much the fine will be.

what'd he talk about ..? the time he was electrocuted by the lionel train?
Jonathan has endless tons of jokes that easily melts away the coldness of winter. I always come back to these videos to cheer myself.
"I'm folks, I'm people...understand." Brilliant! Class act!
GREATNESS: two wooden chairs, two live entertainers and too much comedy to keep composure. Truly got tears in my eyes from laughing.
🙃
Jonathan winter , the best improvisationist comedian ever !!
Har har hardy har har.
It makes me so happy for some reason to see the joy on dean’s face during this.
One of the Golden Age of television. Those days are gone.... and we are the worse for it.
Simple props, no rehearsal, far too much talent.....then just laugh your butt off. That entire generation of entertainers were absolutely golden!!!
Jonathan Winters was second to none.He was the best.

Jonathan Winters, not just a great comedian, but the best John Wayne impersonator I've heard.
Dean was the greatest audience any comic could wish for and especially for the amazingly improvised brilliance of the unique Jonathon Winters.
What a great post. Just fantastic to see the king of comedy and his wit and come backs. RIP JW.
Two of my favorite people!!! It's heaven!❤️
Ahh it’s so great to see Dean genuinely laughing so hard that he can’t contain himself 😂 Jonathan Winters is just amazing.
I loved watching how long Dean Martin trying to keep a straight face around Jonathan Winters is an Art of Comedy in itself🤣🤣
I miss these guys, and also another Dean Martin favorite, Foster Brooks.
