      They were the faces of two different visions of the west. John Wayne's West was optimistic and there were clear lines between good and evil. Bronson, like Eastwood, starred in Westerns that were darker and "heroes" were as flawed as the "villains".

      I would say between the two, Charlie would have probably kicked Wayne's ass. Chuck had a rough upbringing and he was already working in coal mines at the age of 10; he didn't experience the comfort of regular meals until he joined the army. Wayne grew up in a comfortable, middle class life style.

    I watched the "All Star Party for John Wayne" many times. During the show nobody got that kind of applause that Bronson got. Back in 1976 he was a hot star with hits like "Death Wish" or "Hard Times". John Wayne gave Bronson a strange look when Bronson said "but I´ve been a fan of Mr Wayne for many years"(second 34). It could be possible that John Wayne didn´t like guys like Bronson or Eastwood in the movies because their movies were very violent and I think that "Duke" didn´t like "vigilante movies" because of provocative violence. I remember an interview in which famous cult director Don Siegel said to John Wayne: Shoot him in the back" while filming "The Shootist" and Duke said "I would never shoot somebody in the back". Siegel said: "Well, Clint Eastwood would. "Duke" got upset and said to Siegel: "I don´t care what that kid would do....". Hilarious.

    • @MrImiller07
      @MrImiller07 10 років тому +6

      I believe that Wayne respected the talents and success of Eastwood and Bronson, however, he had established a carefully maintained screen persona and Wayne was extremely conscious of that. Lauren Bacall has stated in various interviews that Wayne and Don Siegel butted heads while filming The Shootist, however, the finished film was moving, well done and showcased one of the best latter day performances of Wayne.

    • @speedracer1945
      @speedracer1945 9 років тому

      nico merker I heard that story too from Eastwood Himself. He may liked Bronson to a degree more since He was invited , but Eastwood wasn't invited I bet LOL. Another story about the Duke an Kirk Douglas on the film the War Wagon , seems Douglas wore a pinky ring over His glove an the Duke hated that and Wayne had some words with the Director over it .

    • @Katzenhase
      @Katzenhase  9 років тому +2

      Dan Reese: Clint said once in an interview that John Wayne probably liked him as a person but didn´t like some of his movies. It´s a well known fact that "Duke" didn´t like "High Plains Drifter", probably because of the rape scene. I don´t know whether "Duke" liked Bronson or not. Mike Frankovich was the producer of the "All Star Party for John Wayne" and Frankovich was producing to movies at the time "The Shootist" with Duke and "From Noon till Three" with Bronson. Maybe he asked Bronson to participate Duke´s tribute. But that´s just a hunch.

    • @speedracer1945
      @speedracer1945 9 років тому +3

      nico merker He still gave the Duke a excellent speech. Whether or not if they even had any relationship , least Bronson's words gave honorable respect toward Him .

    Back in the days when people had a little more respect both for themselves and other people. When we were young and we got drunk, we all thought we were John Wayne. I remember standing at a bar one night with my hands on my hips and leaning a little forward just as old Duke used to do! And how many fella's back then tried to recite the John Wayne speech which went something like ' I won't be lied about' I won't be laid a hand on' I can't remember the rest! I think it came from 'Hondo' but I'm not sure...great days!

    I sang in the USC (Wayne's Alma Mater) Chamber Singers Ensemble that came out at the beginning of the show. If I remember correctly, we were standing on those same steps as Bronson. We were dressed in cheerleading outfits and sang an arrangement of Holiday for Strings which Nelson Riddle arranged with all the song titles of Wayne's movies. Maureen O'Hara came to our rehearsal room at the SC campus (her hair in curlers) and rehearsed with us. Then a day or two before we did a pre-record at the studio. It was a small studio, w a studio orchestra. Sinatra was just finishing up his pre record session. You could have heard a pin drop while we stood around the orchestra, watching Old Blue Eyes finish his session. Just a few years later, I ended up working and touring w Mr. Sinatra in Las Vegas in his orchestra. Thrill of a lifetime. What a blast! Is there someone who can post that particular part of the show (or better yet, the entire show!!)?

    It is a travesty that Charles Bronson and John Wayne never did a movie together. I am quite sure that movie would have kicked ass. I guess the only reason it never got made besides the fact that John Wayne died shortly afterwards is because that movie would have been so macho that Hollywood would have had to cancel action and western movies.

    "William Manchester ultimately found himself in the Pacific Ocean theater. Initially he joined the Officer Candidate School but dropped out before receiving a commission. After attaining the rank of corporal, he was sent to Guadalcanal in 1944 for further training. He served in Pacific War's final campaign on the island of Okinawa, was severely wounded on June 5, 1945, ....He served in the Marine Corps, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was shot in the kneecap on Okinawa's Sugar Loaf Hill but left the military hospital when he heard his regiment was moving on to Oruku peninsula. Wounded by mortar fire, he also was shot by a Japanese soldier near his heart. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
    Manchester's wartime experiences formed the basis for his very personal account of the Pacific Theater, Goodbye, Darkness: A Memoir of the Pacific War. In this memoir, Manchester uses some personal anecdotes from his service on Okinawa in his descriptions of battles on Guadalcanal and Saipan.
    In 2001, President George W. Bush presented Manchester with the National Humanities Medal. Manchester is also the recipient of the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award, among other awards". - [pasted from Wikipedia and Washington Post articles]
    Manchester was wounded, left the hospital to return to the fight, and was wounded twice more, very nearly dying. After the war he became a renowned journalist, author, historian.
    And this is what the war hero, REAL war hero William Manchester thought of John Wayne:
    “After my evacuation from Okinawa, I had the enormous pleasure of seeing [John] Wayne humiliated in person at Aiea Heights Naval Hospital in Hawaii. Only the most gravely wounded, the litter cases, were sent there.... Each evening Navy corpsmen would carry litters down to the hospital theater so the men could watch a movie. One night they had a surprise for us. Before the film the curtains parted and out stepped John Wayne, wearing a cowboy outfit-and 10-gallon hat, bandanna, checkered shirt, two pistols, chaps, boots and spurs. He grinned his aw-shucks grin, passed a hand over his face and said, ‘Hi ya, guys!' He was greeted by a stony silence. Then somebody booed. Suddenly everyone was booing.“This man was a symbol of the fake machismo we had come to hate, and we weren't going to listen to him. He tried and tried to make himself heard, but we drowned him out, and eventually he quit and left.”

    All respect to Charles Bronson. Everyone you hear says he was an amazing man.
    NO RESPECT TO JOHN WAYNE. When he was in good health and in a “public setting” JW was charming. When you ran into JW in the private sector he was an asshole. He was nasty as hell in Ridgeway, CO filming True Grit. Saw him in a grocery store and watched as an innocent asked him for an autograph... he went berserk. Screaming at the poor woman that “Am I not allowed a private life???!!!” All he had to say was no thank you and she would’ve left.
    Glenn Campbell was so sweet and friendly. The director always bought every child in the restaurant an ice cream when he ate. Never saw Kim Darby. Never saw Robert Duvall but JW was a particular asshat... repeatedly.

    Love John Wayne movies. Have been on a JW kick lately. Love his Patriotism... BUT... failed to enlist/serve for financial reasons. Seems to have made up for it by backing a disastrous war in Indochina. Glorified service for a war we chose not to win. Near as I can tell, neither Patrick Wayne nor Ethan Wayne served. Wonder how his patriotism would work today. I believe our elected officials would sicken Wayne. #Confused
