I loved seeing how the metal moved to make that U shaped part. I always appreciate how you show different ways to solve problems. The sound of the latch is so satisfying.
My brother You better not get tired of hearing this , because I'm not going to stop saying it... I was Educated / Entertained watching this video . Stay well Taylor, Willie and all the 2 and 4 footed members of the farm and of course you my brother .
A lot of work for a door latch, but it amazes me how you can see something in your head, and bring it to life! I love the old techniques that you use. Beautiful work!
No wonder why blacksmiths were thought of as magicians in ancient times. Now we look at it and there's a science behind it, but it still seems magical. Love your videos they suck you in with the sounds of progress and work, what you make is practical art and it's truly an inspiration. Thank you.

очень интересный вариант засова, я такой впервые вижу, вы хороший мастер, не каждый кузнец знает как сделать прямой угол на поковке, а у вас всё отлично получилось, да и мастерская супер, молодец!
We can all agree that you've got some amazing and valuable tools. However, the MOST valuable tool is the one between your ears. Nicely done, as always!!
Aloha Jimmy, I'm glad you did this and yes, you have serious skills! It would have to been way easier to buy something. I did it professionally for 30 years (architectural) and would have been proud to have you working in my shop! I would only suggest that you decide where you want the anvil, fasten down the stand and fasten the anvil to the stand. If the anvil bounces or moves sideways you are losing energy and control. Have you watched on the height of the face of the anvil? I look forward to your vids!
That latch is for when times get rough, and they're going to get rough. You could drill a hole on the part that raises on the right hand side and the part that slides and hang a lock in there, so the day sleepers couldn't steal your chickens for sustenance or trade. Just my thoughts from the guy in Tucson
Hey Jimmy Diresta, it's been a while. But, your work outstanding. This lock is crazy fantastic. You should've shared our design of the lock. I think that would've been kool to do everytime. The lock had some great 45°. On it. But, you did it. Thank you. Your great.
These are amazing man. The thing I find most incredible about your creations is the economics of it. I think your most incredible achievement has been making money as a builder. You did it before youtube and before your show and I'm most interested in those time frames where you didn't have a show but were able to pay for life and accumulate tools. I'd love to see a "how to" on the economics of being a maker in the real world.
Love the ingenuity on this one! If you didn't have the title I wouldn't even know what you were making until the very end. Its exciting to watch it all come together. Great work!
How so many projects get started, the good old scrap bucket! I envy you guys with your huge work shops in my townhouse, now retired after a long career of all things manufacturing/machining, started as a tool and die apprentice finished as an Instrumentmaker.
I was wondering why all the "chicken interludes" during the the making of this great forged latch mechanism, I thought for sure was for a big $ paying client, then onto the chicken coop door lol. That's LOVE man!
Nice work and nice quality Pferd File set. I have the same here. And i bought aditional the special File from Pferd for soft Metals (really woth the money!). No more aluminum stucking to the file teeth.
Nice blacksmithing! The yardbirds should appreciate their security. :-) My dog would appreciate the ease with which he could open the latch with his nose. So be sure to not forget the icepick lock! Hope no dogs come looking for a snack at yours if you do!
OMG this was awesome! Being an engineer / hobby machinist I love the 'mechanical ka-chunka chunka of this thing This is maybe one of your best projects, the design and style of this is fantastic. Love it
Jimmy, that's awesome idea. Roosters so pretty cool! My 5 yers old son love your roosters, he said: dad, say Jimmy, that he would never kill them. They must always live!
I have knocked previous videos of yours where the cnc machine (stained glass vid) does the majority of the work. This is incredible and showcases your imagination and talent perfectly. Well done.
Great build, and im becoming more and more impressed with how far you forging skills are progressing withe each video. The best way to clean up those 90s Is to clamp it in the vice and go at it from both sides at the same time with 2 hammers, make sure you got a good heat on it first. Its like my mentor always says "Nothing wastes more time then cold steel and poor technique."
Jimmy, that is the coolest bit of Ferrier work I've seen in some time. And, great design. Thoroughly love watching you work. So sorry you weren't able to hold a get together when you were in So Cal. Would have loved to have shared a beer and bumped fists. I'm sure our illustrious Governor, Gruesome Neusome, had some thing to do with his "No Gatherings" rulings. Oh well, maybe next year. Here's to a renewal on your show and a great holiday. Again, great work. You are truly a Renaissance Man for our time.
I really like this channel. And the lock is really good work. But really, for my coup I bought a latch at tractor supply for a $1.39 and installed it in 10 minutes. Again, excellent work, but for a working farm I would have been fired for taking the time and materials to build this latch. It's more like an extra door safety latch!
I loved seeing how the metal moved to make that U shaped part. I always appreciate how you show different ways to solve problems. The sound of the latch is so satisfying.
This must be the most overkill chicken coop latch ever made
I was thinking that. Let's hope the fox hasn't got a screwdriver!
Overbuilt on purpose like ZT knives hahaha
Love it 👍 nice work 😁
It is not just a latch... an excuse... to have fun and make art.

That's the kind of latch I would expect on a bear cage, maybe for a tiger.

Normal people: I bought this really sturdy latch for my chicken coop!
JD: Hold my cutting emulsion...
Ahhhh the geometry of mechanism is so satisfying! Jimmy has the gift of making hard stuff look easy.
And easy stuff look hard.
Completely necessary and not over engineered at all.... I like it.
That should keep them safe from dogs, foxes, and the occasional velociraptor.

Everyone else is going in the automated chicken coop latch direction and Jimmy is going full 18th century. Love it.
I bet not many 18th century blacksmiths wore Rolex. JD has skills and class!
Well done, the egg production can only benefit by the security engendered and the appreciation for such a well constructed latch
That’s the hottest piece of over design I’ve ever seen. Real nice Jimmy.
Beautiful chickens. The slide bolt lock has the most interesting and unique operating mechanism and it’s as pretty to look at as the birds.
