Always wear some type of eye protection! I had a loose string end fly around scratch my eye once and that sucks for a week! The main issue after a string change is that folks do not stretch their strings and it will take DAYS to normalize if you don't. They make a tool called a String Stretcha which is a stick that has a hook and heal and it works great. It is like $10 and will save you so much time. Another little trick it to tune up a half step so there is a little extra tension, then use the bar and stretch out the strings a few times by pulling back on the bar, then tune to pitch and lock up the nut. Once a year I will put a drop of 3-in-1 oil on each threaded part after cleaning, which will keep things nice and free. But you nailed most of the important parts like a Boss!

FINALLY!!! A video that gives me confidence in restringing my floyd rose guitars instead of always going to Guitar Center. The order of changing strings only really matters if you took all the strings off for some reason (for example, if you were doing some maintenance on the fretboard/fret-wire, or dropped new pickups in). In that case, you want to start with the thickest string because it adds the most tension (thus de-tuning your guitar by a lot if you save it for last).
To me playing the guitar is more important than having it anyway, since I don't have money for a Floyd Rose. I only came here to help my cousin with HIS Floyd Rose, and I have to say, not hard to maintain, but not worth all of the struggle.
I prefer to take all the strings off, allows me to clean the guitar from top to bottom between string changes. I only own one guitar so it gets abused and during hours upon hours of play.
Yes! Somehow no one ever mentions this. I can only wonder if they clean their fretboards at all... IMO it is better to block the Floyd in order to keep it leveled and be able to clean your fretboard.
This is very helpful. I just got a guitar with this bridge, and I’ve been a little lost. I think you did a great job of putting this video together. Thanks.
This really helps. I'm a 14 year old with an Ibanez guitar with a floyd rose bridge and its been paining me, because my bridge was way too high and I couldn't really get my guitar perfectly in tune, so thanks!
This year I got my first guitar with Floyd Rose and today I changed the strings for the first time without messing it up, and everything thanks to this video!!! 😎🎸
1. Elixir strings because restringing less often is always better. More playing time and less inconvenience dealing with the Floyd Rose. 2. Drill bit to speed up the winding process. 3. You can put the ball end through the tuner 80's style. 4. Keep your humidity consistent so the neck doesn't move. If you do this, they stay in tune for months at a time. I'm not kidding.
Tip: Thread the string in reverse and leave the "ball" end in the tuner. Makes it quicker, even with locking tuners, cause you only need to make one cut for the bridge.
Just got a new guitar with a FLoyd rose and knocked a tuning pin on the tremlo and lost my ability to stay in tune. Panicked and came to watch this video. Life saver information! Thanks from four years after it was made! :)
I'm going to disagree with you here. Fine tuning done with pegs is a dubious method. Besides having a memory after a while (a "set" if you will) that makes fine tuning difficult as sometimes the strings fall back into their set, you also have to concern yourself with nut friction. Make a small tuning adjustment of the first string and you'll find that the change did not make it past the nut until you strum so the vibration can equalize the tension (at least that's how it is on my locking system). However, even though the locking system flattens the strings at the bridge and the nut, a fine tuner screw allows minute pitch corrections and avoids all of the aforementioned problems. If you meant that you can't get more tuning stability from a floating bridge, well then I totally agree.
Glenn Krzeminski I was referring to the tuners found in the headstock not the fine tuners. It takes seconds to string a tuner, lock the string and cut whats left.
actually locking tuners slightly keep the guitar more in tune. The wrapping around of the tuner peg actually slowly loses tension and will cause it to go out of tune more, but locking tuners don't have that particular issue
RHCP Guitar Covers Its a floy. Once you lock the nut it doesnt matter what tuners you have. But yeah I have a roller nut and locking tuners in my super strat (vintage trem)
Thank you so much, I was relatively unfamiliar with the Floyd rose and ran into a lot of headaches after my first string change, but I got it all sorted out thanks to the video! Thanks once again man 🤘🏻
Tyler, 2 questions: 1- What is that neck rest you have? Can you leave its name or a link to it? 2- How do you clean the neck if you change one string at a time? Thanks man.

block the trem, tune the guitar, unblock the trem.....use the bar and if it goes out of tune tighten the claw. just until its back in tune, check any of the several thousand "how to setup a floyd rose videos" it will take a little time to familiarize yourself to it but its not difficult.
Just got a Jackson JS30 with a Floyd rose - my first thought was 'I wonder if Tyler has anything to assist me with it?' Turns out I was right. You're the man, Tyler.
THANK YOU so much! My new guitar will arrive next week, it has a floyd rose on it and I'm a total newbie when it comes to that. Another question, if I want another tuning (let's say drop D), should I do this with the finetuners or unlock the locking nut bolt?
I use my E string fine turner to drop it to D but you have to have it set right so the tuner has enough room to drop a tone. After that you might have to adjust some of your other strings slightly.
If you try to drop to d it will make all the other strings sharp and pull the bridge up so its not really possible. If you get s non recessed fr live an evh or a charvel or old kramers you can
A damm fine vid Tyler. Love the HD sharpness - props for having impeccably clean guitars! Not a single speck of dust to be seen, especially around the tuning pegs and saddles. How the HELL do you keep them so clean?? :D For decades, I have changed all 6 strings in one shot, mostly because I am lazy [and also so I can do some basic fretboard and fret cleaning/polishing] - I do use the Tremolok. This is a largely discontinued [no clue why] hardened plastic L-shaped tool. Use the arm to dive and then slide the Tremolok under the entire Floyd assembly. The bottom of the tool is soft rubber so it won't slide or mar the finish. Besides this, you know there are lots of other alternatives if you want to temporarily block your Floyd off for maintenance - pieces of wood, stack of coins, whatever to fit inside the cavity between the body and the sustain block of the Floyd, but I love the Tremolok thing because I don't need to open the back plate at all. I also don't cut the ball ends off my D'addarios. Just got into the habit decades ago of leaving them in - but I string them reverse, from the headstock side. I know a few traditional folks worry that the ball ends may damage the tuning pegs, but I have never seen any issue or problem. You're absolutely right - despite all the whiners, re-stringing a Floyd really takes just slightly more time and effort over hardtail bridges, but yes, if you understand the basic mechanics of a Floyd and do the process correctly, it is not difficult at all. Tyler, your channel is great and continued success in 2017! But I gotta ask - while I know you are officially affiliated with PRS [awesome axes, indeed!], given how much I know you love Joe, I need to know - do you own/plan to own/have ever played any of the JS series Ibanez guitars? I own 2 JS [1000 and 1200], plan to get one of the newer JS24s and I gotta say, honestly, they are some of the finest playing, most sonically versatile guitars I have ever owned/touched. And BTW, having been lucky enough to meet and hang with Joe 3x over the last 30 years in NYC, I absolutely can confirm what everyone says about Joe - he is indeed the nicest guy in the world. Not a single bit of "rockstar"/"guitar-god" disease in the man [cough...cough...Malmsteen...cough]. Truly, a world class human being - no surprise at all why he is so respected and truly loved in the music community. :) cheers!
To anyone who complains about the fact that they’re a “pain” That’s because you don’t know how to properly tune one, do this and they can be tuned in under 2 minutes: 1. Get the bridge perfectly level 2. Block off both ends of the brass block ( I recommend taping some pennies together with electrical tape) 3. Unlock the nut 4. Level fine tuners in the middle so you have adjustment room 5. Tune the guitar to perfect/as close to perfect pitch as possible 6. Lock each section of the nut as you go to maintain tuning as best as possible 7. Unblock the bridge once the guitar is in tune 8. DO NOT TOUCH THE TUNING PEGS! 9. Use the claw screws to re-level the bridge 10. The guitar might be slightly sharp or flat by only about 10-20 cents 11. Use fine tuners to level pitch back to perfect 12. DONE. There’s absolutely no reason anyone shouldn’t be able to do this.
@@anniedarkhorse6791 And they don't hold tune well either. Nah, I'll stick with the vintage-style Strat trem, that thing has never given me any trouble.
Only if this was 2 weeks sooner! I am a noob at guitar setups and had to change from 9's to 10's on my new guitar and needed to set it up again. Very clear, informative and helpful video. Just got your GSS 1 course and looking forward to starting it once I have got my IT exam out of the way.
You can remove all of the strings at once, but keep in mind that you’d have to put some kind of mechanism under the bridge to keep it level with the guitar body. I like using a stack of cards
Isn't it easier to put a little rubber eraser underneath the bridge, and take all of the strings at the same time. The bridge won't sink down, and it's not going anywhere. So you can clean your fretboard, do whatever you want, and it's also faster.
Awesome bro been playing few years and just got first Floyd Rose equipped Jackson...and loving it..no worries here...my brothers on you tube are here to help..😄🎸🤘
I regret not watching this when I got my first Floyd Rose guitar. Within the first minute he explained something that I did wrong and had to get my guitar fixed by a professional
finally one of these youtubers that I follow shows us a perfect tutorial on how to do this type of work although each one does it in their own way for me of all those who have seen this is perfect for only the change of strings of course, the calibration is still missing and octavacion or when the fretbord arches but this is fine for guitarists who are starting to use the floyd rose
its depends on the tension of the springs he is using. if you have super tight springs, with a high spring constant you will need less of them to keep the required tension. his springs have super low tension apparently. hope that helps.
Wow! that makes sense now. Thanks Zac :) I honestly thought all springs were made equal. Haven't really changed a set of them till now. Will keep this in mind if I ever have to :)
Simon Manuel If a Floyd equipped guitar keeps going out of tune check the springs they could be sprung they don't last forever. I've got a guitar with a floyd that's over ten years old had to replace the springs twice on it since I've owned it.
+spiderfan1974 hey thanks for the tip. I've never had a problem with the guitar ever going out of tune. Something I love about the Floyd! stays on pitch for months! but if this ever happens, I now know where to check :)
I own a Gibson Les Paul Axcess Standard with a Floyd Rose bridge. It's a bit time consuming when changing the strings because it's so much different from a Fender or a Gibson with a stop tail piece. However, with the tuning locks and that bridge, you can use the Tremolo and drop dive bombs all day long, and the guitar will stay in tune. Also, great tone and great feel, Great Guitar! My point is this, if you don't mind spending a little more time changing your strings, the Floyd Rose bridge is definitely worth it.
I hate my Floyd Rose. If I ever buy another Floyd Rose guitar, it will only be non-floating (like EVH, Fender Dave Murray Stratocaster or Kramer Pacer).
Awesome, I have a esp with a FR bridge and just snapped the A string. Was nervous to mess with it but now I feel a lot more confident that I can swap out the strings with no help. Appreciate the vid
Jimi Jones you have seen the video by rob chapman, how to block a tremolo? since then i can play mine like a hardtail :) dont even use the locking nut anymore and tune without the finetuners (unless i need to)
Dissonant Timbres just make a fitting piece of wood (with a rasp and sandpaper), place it between the sustain block and body and tighten the springs. better and much cheaper
Great vid. Changed two broken strings on a Floyd guitar last night as I wanted to use it quick for rehearsals. Totally agree - always do one string at a time on a Floyd Rose bridge! Interesting as you stretch out after all new strings on and after first tune up. I tend to do it before I tune up each string. I will try your technique after this, cheers! Rich UK
It's not even remotely hard to do. All it takes is some patience and some knowledge. But hey, some people just never understand it. But it's all preference. Every guitar ive ever owned had a Floyd. In turn I love Floyds and dispise TOM bridges.
Rob Covello Had a Floyd as my second guitar. It took some getting used to changing the strings but I got the hang of it. But it NEVER stayed in tune, always had something wrong with it. It just seems like you spend more time "maintaining" it than actually playing it. Anyways, binned it because I hated it that much and bought a Les Paul. Never looked back since.
A lot of people have that issue. I've found it usually comes down to being setup properly. Intonation, action, truss rod, etc etc all play a role. I had my former teacher teach me how to properly setup my floyds and they've been perfect since. Even cheaper licensed floyds I have stay perfectly in tune always. The rest of my band is tuning between songs and im sitting there like alright guys lets goooooo. lol. But to each his own. Enjoy your Paul ma.
wow that's great man! Very helpful! Finally, a good floyd rose tutorial video. I'd love to see a full floyd rose setup tutorial from you if it's possible!
I do it the same way on my Gretsch with the Bigsby tremolo. My old instructor said the Floyd Rose was a giant pain in the butt and should be avoided at all costs. But Tyler makes it seem reasonable. :) Truth is, I didn't know much at all about the FR bridge, so this video is awesome! That's quite a slick bridge design. I could foresee maybe having one on a future PRS.
Great video - really helpful. Thanks. As an amusing aside, I recall an interview with Ry Cooder. He agreed with the interviewer on the subject of regular string changes. "Yes" he said "I change mine real regular - once every couple of years..." hohoho
After watching this, I kinda miss having a Floyd Rose... I remember the first time I tried changing strings and figured it was like a regular guitar and took all the strings off at once and my bridge just slapped down into the body. Threw it in the bag and brought it to my music store and for like 2 years paid like $45 for him to restring it every once in a while. Near the end of me owning that guitar I did end up learning to change my own strings but sold it for a Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top Pro. (Love that guitar)
Thanks for this. I just got a Jackson Dinky with Floyd Rose and didn't I know I had to loosen the nut on the neck. Of course, the A string snapped off. Now I know why. I wish I'd seen this earlier. Thanks again for this lesson. It's gonna help big time. 😁

This really helps. I'm a 14 year old with an Ibanez guitar with a floyd rose bridge and its been paining me, because my bridge was way too high and I couldn't really get my guitar perfectly in tune, so thanks!
7:45 that sounded so satisfying
This year I got my first guitar with Floyd Rose and today I changed the strings for the first time without messing it up, and everything thanks to this video!!! 😎🎸
1. Elixir strings because restringing less often is always better. More playing time and less inconvenience dealing with the Floyd Rose.
2. Drill bit to speed up the winding process.
3. You can put the ball end through the tuner 80's style.
4. Keep your humidity consistent so the neck doesn't move. If you do this, they stay in tune for months at a time. I'm not kidding.
@@devinsinderwitcz9134 Didn't know that. Good stuff.
Great video! I just got my Ibanez RG5170B and has never used a Floyd Rose Tremelo system before. Your video helps me a lot! Thank you!
i didnt know clay jensen played guitar
Beautifully shot video! The clear and sharp closeups make all the difference when trying to learn this type of finely detailed task.
Those locking tuners only serve as a tool for faster restrings. You cant get more tuning stability from a locking system
How is there any disagreement here? I thought FR was so easy, lol...
If it's that easy there shouldn't be any controversies like this.
Thank you so much, I was relatively unfamiliar with the Floyd rose and ran into a lot of headaches after my first string change, but I got it all sorted out thanks to the video! Thanks once again man 🤘🏻
Am i the only one who collects the ball ends?
Rudy Ayoub lol i thought I was the only one that collects them
Rudy Ayoub good idea
I do it too hahaha =D
you collect ball sweat,oh wait a minute...forget it
I collected one with a busted string end when it got stuck into my foot an inch deep.
This red flamed maple top is AMAZING!!! Awesome guitar man!
i just subscribed for your course. wish me luck!! :)
Bro your vid will save me countless hours in the near future, gonna get a floyd setup soon and stumbled upon your vid. Thanks!
Tyler, 2 questions:
1- What is that neck rest you have? Can you leave its name or a link to it?
2- How do you clean the neck if you change one string at a time?
Thanks man.
Although I don't see the Music is Win branded model, the product can be found here:

@Tyler : Get your brand machine up and running so you can sell Music is Win merch! :-)
Thank you Garth.
I just got an 8 string Ibanez-rga8, This video was a life saver as previously I had no idea about Floyd Rose guitars
can you please do a tutorial on how to rebalance(?) the bridge or at least how to get rid of fret buzz? i'm desperate
If you get fret buzz try and raise the action of the string you have problem with
block the trem, tune the guitar, unblock the trem.....use the bar and if it goes out of tune tighten the claw.
just until its back in tune, check any of the several thousand "how to setup a floyd rose videos"
it will take a little time to familiarize yourself to it but its not difficult.
Just got a Jackson JS30 with a Floyd rose - my first thought was 'I wonder if Tyler has anything to assist me with it?'
Turns out I was right.
Rick van Pol i doubt fine tuners will do the job but again i just got my floud rose
I use my E string fine turner to drop it to D but you have to have it set right so the tuner has enough room to drop a tone. After that you might have to adjust some of your other strings slightly.
If you try to drop to d it will make all the other strings sharp and pull the bridge up so its not really possible. If you get s non recessed fr live an evh or a charvel or old kramers you can
If you just want Drop D, use the EVH D-Tuna
I’m getting an Ibanez jem, that’s why I’m watching this.
A damm fine vid Tyler. Love the HD sharpness - props for having impeccably clean guitars! Not a single speck of dust to be seen, especially around the tuning pegs and saddles. How the HELL do you keep them so clean?? :D
For decades, I have changed all 6 strings in one shot, mostly because I am lazy [and also so I can do some basic fretboard and fret cleaning/polishing] - I do use the Tremolok.
cheers!
He takes care of them?
+Rob Covello: Awesome! Most useful comment on youtube ever...NOT...
Well I mean yours was pretty pointless. How do you keep guitars clean? By cleaning them regularly.
UA-cam really is overdue for an imdb-style IGNORE function...
Joe Satchton There is. Just don't answer. Pretty simple.
Nice a simple explanation. Super good camera work. Keep up the good work
To anyone who complains about the fact that they’re a “pain” That’s because you don’t know how to properly tune one, do this and they can be tuned in under 2 minutes:
1. Get the bridge perfectly level
2. Block off both ends of the brass block ( I recommend taping some pennies together with electrical tape)
3. Unlock the nut
4. Level fine tuners in the middle so you have adjustment room
5. Tune the guitar to perfect/as close to perfect pitch as possible
6. Lock each section of the nut as you go to maintain tuning as best as possible
7. Unblock the bridge once the guitar is in tune
8. DO NOT TOUCH THE TUNING PEGS!
9. Use the claw screws to re-level the bridge
10. The guitar might be slightly sharp or flat by only about 10-20 cents
11. Use fine tuners to level pitch back to perfect
12. DONE.
There’s absolutely no reason anyone shouldn’t be able to do this.
OR get a regular-ass trem, a decently lubricated nut, some locking tuners, and call it a friggin day.
@@anniedarkhorse6791 And they don't hold tune well either. Nah, I'll stick with the vintage-style Strat trem, that thing has never given me any trouble.
thank you very much. Now Im gonna use this next time ill change my strings on the floyd rose
How do you clean the fret board with the strings on ?
Venom Stains clean the part under the one string that you have off
You dont
You can remove all of the strings at once, but keep in mind that you’d have to put some kind of mechanism under the bridge to keep it level with the guitar body. I like using a stack of cards
With patience
Isn't it easier to put a little rubber eraser underneath the bridge, and take all of the strings at the same time. The bridge won't sink down, and it's not going anywhere. So you can clean your fretboard, do whatever you want, and it's also faster.
Awesome bro been playing few years and just got first Floyd Rose equipped Jackson...and loving it..no worries here...my brothers on you tube are here to help..😄🎸🤘
nice tutorial, but if you change the strings one by one, you couldnt clean the fretboard
Why not?
I can still clean it when 1 string is down
I regret not watching this when I got my first Floyd Rose guitar. Within the first minute he explained something that I did wrong and had to get my guitar fixed by a professional
What do you do if the guitar goes out of tune when you pull the whammy bar up or down ?
Get a guitar with locking nuts
Adjust the nuts
finally one of these youtubers that I follow shows us a perfect tutorial on how to do this type of work although each one does it in their own way for me of all those who have seen this is perfect for only the change of strings of course, the calibration is still missing and octavacion or when the fretbord arches but this is fine for guitarists who are starting to use the floyd rose
5 springs?!! 😲 what gauge are you on? great video by the way! Floyds are everything! ❤️
10-46 it says on the box of Elixir.. shouldn't 3 be enough? I'm on a 12-54 set with the guitar dropped to C (same tension as a 9-42 (roughly!))
its depends on the tension of the springs he is using. if you have super tight springs, with a high spring constant you will need less of them to keep the required tension. his springs have super low tension apparently.
hope that helps.
Wow! that makes sense now.
My point is this, if you don't mind spending a little more time changing your strings, the Floyd Rose bridge is definitely worth it.
you don't need to cut the ball end, you can just have it at the headstock
You do if you have Sperzel locking tuners.
sounds dumb
@@hotman718 looks dumb
Must be dumb
I'm considering purchasing my first Floyd rose bridge guitar. Thanks for sharing. Looks easy enough.
I hate my Floyd Rose.
If I ever buy another Floyd Rose guitar, it will only be non-floating (like EVH, Fender Dave Murray Stratocaster or Kramer Pacer).
Lied to myself, just bought a Jackson DKMG and loving it.
Mandarin ironic
I don't have a Floyd Rose guitar, nor do I plan on getting one. I just like your videos.
You forgot one thing
You also will need a floyd rose
Fuck i forgot my floyd rose
Awesome, I have a esp with a FR bridge and just snapped the A string. Was nervous to mess with it but now I feel a lot more confident that I can swap out the strings with no help. Appreciate the vid
6:11 That bridge is not level.
Agree, it's floating a few degrees...
You S.O.B!
That Paul Reed Smith guitar is the only reason why I watched this video
I fucking hate my Floyd
Jimi Jones you have seen the video by rob chapman, how to block a tremolo? since then i can play mine like a hardtail :) dont even use the locking nut anymore and tune without the finetuners (unless i need to)
What guitar is it on?
Dissonant Timbres just make a fitting piece of wood (with a rasp and sandpaper), place it between the sustain block and body and tighten the springs.
better and much cheaper
take 5 minutes and stop being a dumbass, then you will love it
Rich UK
what prs is that?
I know I'm a year late but it's a custom 24 with a a Floyd Rose. They go for about 1.2-1.4k
Properly presented tutorial : simple, focused and articulated. Thank you and may the schwartz be with you.
step 1: buy a hardtail
string through gang
@@lolickypeepee23xdd6 Reporting
You have saved my life I’ve just got my floyd rose guitar and I fucked it up now thanks to you I can play it again. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Step 1: Don't buy guitars with Floyd Rose bridges and you will be happy.
That's all you need :)
Or do, and stay in tune forever.
Rob Covello I'd rather tune my guitar a few more times than put up with that hideous metal mechanism. Pain in the ass is all it is.
You know your videos are good when people watch them when they don't own a floyd guitar but come back to watch again when they do
I do it the same way on my Gretsch with the Bigsby tremolo.
My old instructor said the Floyd Rose was a giant pain in the butt and should be avoided at all costs. But Tyler makes it seem reasonable. :)
Truth is, I didn't know much at all about the FR bridge, so this video is awesome! That's quite a slick bridge design. I could foresee maybe having one on a future PRS.
Plus one for Elixer Nano. Best strings I've encoutered thus far.
Great video - really helpful. Thanks.
As an amusing aside, I recall an interview with Ry Cooder. He agreed with the interviewer on the subject of regular string changes. "Yes" he said "I change mine real regular - once every couple of years..." hohoho
Glad to see someone who has to run all 5 springs like I do on my rg570, can’t seem to find a balance with only 3
Had to watch this twice. First time I was busy wiping the drool of my iPad. Damn that PRS is 👍
After watching this, I kinda miss having a Floyd Rose...
Thank you bro. I just Got a JS32 Dinky Arch Top and Needed to orient on the Floyd. Great video.
just got a FR guitar, this is just amazingly helpful thank you !
