RIP your euphyilia. I’ve had bubble algae for years and yes it is unsightly, but as the reef matures it relents and is displaced. Finally, I commend you on transparency. Love it! You walk the perfect line by telling us or buying it. I don’t have to guess. Antonio! Queenofreef! This is how you do it.
Moki, you’re videos are the best edited in the reefing community and I really appreciate ur approach to everything u come across. Keep making this great content! Always the highlight of my Sundays!!!
Yeah I got a small peppermint shrimp and he is super outgoing and bold, he never bothers corals (other than food stealing) but he investigates every single coral I add which I love since if I miss some Aiptasia he’ll definitely take care of it. He even cleans my hand! I definitely agree. I believe there’s different peppermint shrimps
Hey dont know if you read these, but a great way to get the peppermint shrimp to eat aptasia or majano is to crush a couple, or if you have a majano wand boil a couple before lights out. It triggers their feeding response
I have a Arabian cowry that’s funny you just got one I asked if you ever had a cowrie in your reef tank now you do! lol my cowrie is about 2 inches big he only moves around at night I leave him a piece of seaweed on a veggie clip and he’s happy never bothers my coral I love the cowrie shell beautiful
Thanks for the video. I was thinking about getting emerald crabs from reef cleaners, but won't be doing that now since I have collections of nice torches that I can't risk. Sorry about your frogspawn.
First time I kept peppermint shrimp it died and I want to blame it on the wrasse and the size of the shrimp. Second time was the charm with a bigger one and adding him after feeding the tank. And they do seem to be mostly nocturnal because he never pops up during daylight cycles
Sorry to hear about your missing wrasse. Hope you find him soon. I can't have crabs anyway as Piney my Porcupine Puffer will eat them or at least try!!
Why not add just a few nudibranchs to the tank, more to just control the numbers of aptasia, not enough to eat all the aptasia, but would still eliminate a bit? (Never kept so I'm not sure what they get along with)
I know it’s really risky!!! But you should really try a copperband butterfly! I had tons of aptasia! And got the copperband and they were all gone in a week!
Wow. I was going to say, are you sure the emerald crabs are eating live corals and then I saw it sitting on top of the frogspawn literally snacking on it. If the coral was browned out and receding with brown jelly or something then they definitely do eat the dead flesh which is useful, but hard to tell sometimes.
I just picked up some money cowrie snails for the first time yesterday, as Nassarius snails are not available atm in my area. Supposedly they have a good reputation for eating GHA. Let's compare notes in a month, lol If nothing else they're interesting to look at.
Who makes the 135? On a side note, I've had nothing but good luck with peppermint shrimp on Apstastia. Maybe I got lucky. Emeralds I've never had an issue with but they don't really touch the bubble algae either.
Look up stripey fish australia. Should be yellow with black stripes! They are dynamite for clearing up aptasia. Hopefully you guys in the US might be able to order them in?
@@InappropriateReefer I never had any problems with mine when I had saltwater tanks many years ago! Look up gallery aquatica on UA-cam. They add one to a tank covered in aptasia and he destroys them all 👍🏻
Don't know if it is true but I heard that emerald crabs can damage or even eat wrasse when the fish sleeps but just in case keep your eye on the crabs. Best of luck with the tank
Im on the fence i have some bubble algea ive been battling but there is some in my zoa garden where i cant suck them out i want to get emeralds to try but im so scared for my zoas but i guess thats what sumps are for lol
I'm wondering what's final judgement on emerald crabs and peppermint shrimp? I see you got a "Molly Miller Blenny", so the peppermint shrimp didn't do the job?
Hello Mr. Inappropriate !, i bought the Trisodium Phosphate and Sodium Nitrate from Loudwolf. I wanted to know how much of each do you use to make a stock solution please? Thanks!
Has anyone had problems with crabs going after fish? Last year I picked up a nano with Live rock included and it had a Ruby Mithrax crab. I saw it displaying "predatory" behavior around some of my fish... I noticed it trying to sneak up on a couple of my smaller fish. Idk if I was just being paranoid lol. Ended up giving it away to a guy with a bigger tank
Late response but pretty much all crabs (spare for pompom crabs and others that are filter feeders) are opportunistic predators, meaning that while they (usually) won't actively hunt fish, if a fish is wounded/sick/overly passive a crab might see it as a chance at a quick snack. Crabs, while cool, **in my opinion** usually aren't a good idea in any aquarium that isn't already very very very established with plenty of other food sources. If a crab is hungry, a crab will eat. And it won't care if it's chomping down some algae, your favorite fish or pricey coral. All is fair to the crab.
I have an emerald crab and have kept them for years. I've never had one eat a coral but i've. never had one that looks like the ones you bought. I wonder are yours actually emerald crabs or our mine? I'm so confused hahaha
I ordered from Reef Cleaners and almost everything arrived dead the few crabs and snails that made it were so small I couldn't believe that a company would even sell them. Horrible experience with Reef Cleaners
His pronunciation is likely better than all of us already. He already named just as many right as all of us combined. When we get excited we speak fast and when we try to name 100 corals in 2 minutes we overload our brains.
So apparently only Atlantic species of Peppermint Shrimp are considered reef safe.. Those are the ones who's light coloring isn't as bright or vibrant. Caribbean and Indo varieties are not. They have very white markings in comparison to other species. And as far as I know that's the only way to really tell them apart. And ime no species of Emeralds are guaranteed reef safe. That was indeed a very bold statement on behalf of reefcleaners..
Doc, wondering which type of Urchin you got that eats bubble algae? I have two Tuxedo that I moved to the refugium because they got too big (did not touch bubble algae but I did not get them for that purpose)
I see I few things that could be causing this. 1. Your tank is open at the top just think of all the dust and dead skin... 2. What type of air sanitation do you use? I’d invest in a ozone maker. 3. I think once you get past this ugly phase you’ll be good. Seriously consider closing the tank
Why didn’t you just buy red leg hermit crabs whenever I add in new coral and it has a little bit of bubble algae the hermit crabs sworn it and clean it 100% free of bubble algae lol
I've never had a hermit even touch regular hair algae, let alone valonia. You're definitely pretty lucky if yours do. I have a Peacock Mantis Shrimp tank that I keep stocked with smaller reef hermits as well and I've never observed them cleaning algae either...
I have a few Scarlet Hermits in the tank and haven't seen any of them touching the bubble algae.. I always stuck to Scarlet since they seems a bit friendlier towards snails. Do the Red Legs behave a bit differently?
@@InappropriateReefer the red leg hermits are super friendly and never show any aggression towards snails or anything else in the tank! The snails and red leg hermits I have honestly work as a team side by side cleaning any new rock or new coral frags, I got them from petco I’d recommend them if you have a bubble algae problem I’m not even kidding sometimes I’ll gather all my hermits and place them near the new coral frag with bubble algae and they go right to cleaning it 😂
Your peppermint shrimp look different from mine. Should get a one spot fox face never heard off them eatting coral the other one u has was a rabbit fish not the fox face
Berghia nudibranchs will get rid of them for good. That's all they eat. Once you're aptasia free you'll need to pull them from the tank though amd back to the lfs so they don't die. Unless you don't care hahaha
The Berghia where the only thing I got to work 100 %%% and ive been watching your channel for over a year now and you have evicted so many crabs. I have one and she only eats dead coral I think you just have the worst luck of all of us. Maybe you should just scrub all your rock vacuum the sand bed really good change your socks every morning for a week. That’s what I did and it went away. I tried fish crab everything nothing did any thing. So I took a toothbrush to everything and it worked.
The Berghia, I have to point out did work so good. I had so many more then you, Aiptasia that is. and everything I used just made it so bad everything I used red sea f Aiptasia made it spread. I killed one 10 pop up. Then I seen your video, bought 5 and waited weeks. then I notice less and less. now I’m adding Aiptasia every week and the next day the rock is clean just to keep them with food because my wife don’t want them to die. I have never seen them in my tank. I have a 90 gal. And when I added them I didn’t suck them up and place them I put the cup that they came in inside my tank it took them 3 days to leave the cup. I think you should try these little guys again maybe the ones you got didn’t make it. Or a fish or card ate them. I hope you can rid your tank of them. I know I hated them in my tank so much I was ready to take it down and stop the hobby.
I do have 2 emerald crabs in a 30 gallon they have been on corals but not picking at them I had one that was terring apart a birdnest and out in the refugium (jail) then he died and hemrent crabs are good but they fight.
crabs are bad news not worth it. just lost half of a wall hammer to a rogue hermit crab myself. peppermint shrimp might eat your euphylia too. not worth taking the chance.

The worst is when you buy a problem
Per Reefbuilders you might consider trying Brightwell Razor for bubble algae
I have not heard of this product, I will check it out if the Crabs don't work out, thank you!
If you want shrimp, get 1 and only 1 blood shrimp or get the smaller yellow/blue/gold coral banded shrimp. For aiptasia, try miller molly blenny.

I had a female emerald crab and it was eating everything except bubble algae. So now he lives in the sump
I used to have a wrasse who loved hiding - sometimes they get spooked and hide for a day or two
My blue hippo yellow belly got large and started killing my wrasses just an FYI. Had to rehome him and buy new wrasses haven't had issues since
Great video as always! Thanks. How fast do nudibranch eat and wipeout aiptasia? Do they eat them right away?
