I have a 1998 Lexus SC400. Been having trouble with the P0446 code intermittently for years. Car runs great. No smell of fumes and no problems period. Except that it makes it difficult to pass emissions Always pops while I’m in line. Shop says I need a canister and should change the purge valve too. These parts are not available, so I’m thinking of going for collector car plates which exempts me from passing emissions.
i have the gx470 with an aftermarket gas cap. it does click but feels like a flimsy piece of junk. I never hear the air release when I go to full up the gas tank making me think the seal isn't that great. I have the P0446 code along with the check engine light, traction and vsc all lit in the dash at the same time. what could it be? I did MAF cleaning, new air filter, throttle body cleaning. however the oil is still needs to be changed its long over due. not sure if that is part of the is problem.
The code is pointing toward the charcoal canister vent valve having an issue. While it could be the gas cap, I would start by checking all the wires going to the evap vent valve and testing it.
An EVAP problem usually will not harm the engine. The Evap system is for emissions, so often, the engine light stays on, and the vehicle won't pass an emission test.
if it was the hoses, would you be able to smell gas when driving? I'm having this issue with my celica, and I don't require emissions so I'm considering just taking out the charcoal canister cause I sure can't afford the part right now

Wait if I let it fill like normal until it automatically shuts the pump off would that still overfill it?
I have the 441 and 446. For the 441 was the egr vsv, it was cracked, so I fixed. So I have the 446 left.

Luckily it was literally just my gas cap took it off put it back on and code disappeared probably still gonna order a new one just in case

Would a smoke leak test work to find a leak if so how do you connect the smoke tester? Is there a video ?
Yes, there are a lot of good videos for smoke testing the EVAP system.

Have issue with p0448 had took it to mechanic they did smoke test and change vent control value 6 months late engine code re appears

Sometimes there is a gas smell, it can vary.
I replaced my charcoal canister not even a month ago and now it's giving me a p0446 i think the vsv on the new canister failed
I got this code too and was told it was the vsv as well did replacing it get rid of the code?

Check around the air filter area and make sure u didn’t disconnect any hoses that lead to the crap system
