Paul, thanks for the video! I just replaced the evap canister and purge valve, but never thought about the gas cap... Nobody mentions that... Who thinks about maintaining the seals on the cap? I'm going to do that as well now after seeing your video!

Lubricate the seal on the cap first with teflon lubricant and well as cleaning the filler neck, drive it 50 miles and see if the light goes out. If it does not, then replace the entire gas cap with OEM replacement (as internal parts can also fail), drive another 50 miles and see if the light goes out. Let me know what happens.
proclaimliberty2000 well, I wish I had seen your video first... I actually replaced the evaporator canister and evaporator solenoid. Reset the codes and it seems fine. But after seeing your video, I did do the maintenance on the fuel cap... Between those three things, I think it should be fixed... Maybe I could have saved some coin by just looking at the fuel cap, but now everything should be fine.
It amazes me that nobody else said anything about fuel cap maintenance...

you can as well use wd-40 lube spray . serves the same purpose but lasts longer and better

It’s a circuit code... not a performance code. Clearing the code on any Evap related code could take over a month to actually run its readiness monitor and set a code... and Evan isn’t even monitored in winter so you could have the light out for 6 months and have the same problem...I promise this code came back on eventually... more then likely it’s the purge valve canister vent control valve.
I have this exact code on my Chevy Malibu 2004. Someone told me it’s most likely the catalyst converter. Can that even be true ?
@@davidhardcore704 not a related system. If you had code p0420 then your catalytic converter could be a culprit. But this particular code is dealing with gas fumes befor they enter the engine and the catalytic converter is post engine. If that makes sense
What exactly is the purge valve canister. I think that is what it is on mine.
He didn’t clear the code with a reader though, he did it with a drive cycle. So, in his case, it probably was just the gas cap. The vehicle would not have cleared the code if it was the purge valve and it wasn’t replaced. It doesn’t matter how long between monitorings, if you don’t clear a code, either with a reader or disconnecting the battery and draining the capacitor(s), the code remains until the issue is fixed.

This same issue happens on almost all cars...at least the ones I've owned. It reflects the auto makers failure to resolve this reoccurring problem as it's been going on since they put Evap systems on cars. Either fix this or take it off cars.
probably mostly happens is with the gas caps . they are cheaply made .

nice vid..one question: what if I have a combo p0440 & p0446? pep boys told me I need a charcoal canister replacement but I'm just skeptical..it's old though 2002 camry automatic 4 cylinder. I bought it off craigslist as a novice but the gas filler entry is just an uncovered insert hole...no push-in seal or anything....could that have anything to do with it?what would be your best guess? the gas pump also shuts off while pumping before finished..not always but after codes have been clear a couple weeks, the pump did it again and right after the pump shut off early, I left the gas station and the check engine light came back on again

If the gas pump shuts off due to pressure in the tank or poorly designed (or damaged) filler neck while fueling up, fuel can get in the overflow tube and go straight to the charcoal canister and eventually cause issues when it happens multiple times causing fuel to build up in the charcoal canister. Some gas stations pump to much too fast which can cause it too. That’s why it’s important to use the lowest setting on the pump lever or hold it, and never “top off” or overfill the fuel all the way in the neck because it can mess up the charcoal canister or evap system. Hope that info helps.
@@mynamedoesnotmatter737 thanks. I didn't even realize I had that car for so long lol needs an estimated $6000 worth of work says Toyota. So it's parked lol but im keeping it for sentimental reasons and fix it up as I can later on. My newer car needs work now too, it's all a big mess lol

Ah. I have this code on a 1999 solara v6. I went and got it straight piped yesterday and while the guy was down there I mentioned the code and the guy looked at a box exactly like that and said the wires going too it were all kinds of messed up. Wonder if that's causing the car not to accelerate smoothly and every once in awhile when I start the car it gurgles and spurts.
It could be your mass air flow sensor or camshaft position sensor is not working properly.

I'm having code P1490 on my 2003 nissan pathfinder even after replacing the Vacuum Cut Valve Bypass Valve AND solenoid. The code went away, then came back.
I also had P0456 that was solved with a new gas cap.
check your connectors the connector pins are to be tight fitted over each male pin .
Does this code apply to Chevy HHR
fairy new chevy the HHR .. replace your gas cap drive it 15 to 20 miles and engine light will automatically go out while driving when you place your gas cap back on make sure you can get 3 clicks by the way

Joseph Correa You can reset it with a diagnostic scanner or disconnect the positive and negative battery cable for one hour and then reattach.
i did that for 20 mins yesarday and took the part bak off and cleaned everything and then from there put everything bak then went and started car and cycled it to see if it would come back on it didn't but i let car rest for about 20mins came bak and it was bak on but i will leave the battery disconnected for an hour and see if that works as well. I'm thinking maybe the charcoal canister as well maybe might be damaged and needs to be replaced
i even used the scanner that i have and still will come bak after erased it
There's always the possibility you have a faulty gas cap that needs to be replaced.
that's was my next guys im going to replace the gas cap as well so hopfully that dose it will let you know if it work thank you for the tips very helpful .. and for got to say i do have the car battery unplugged for the hour and going to plug it back in to see if the computer resets the code will keep u informd
I've had my car looked at by 2 different shops had all the components replaced on the evap system including the gas cap and the check engine light still comes back on. PO 446. Was told it may be the computer. Need input.

@@rickriley8983 You might need to clean your throttle-body which could be causing your starting issue. I know the check engine light is probably driving you crazy but as long as the vehicle runs good at this point don’t worry about it.
@@rickriley8983 clean the throttle body and make sure the air filter is not dirty.
I got that code but the car jumps,jerks,etc....
Your problem is the Vapor canister PURGE valve solenoid which is normally located in the engine bay by the air filter. My research indicated that a person who had the same issue as you had a late model toyota camry and replacing the PURGE valve was the answer.

It's not dangerous to drive unless the check engine light starts flashing.
@@proclaimliberty2000 What happens if it starts flashing? I got mine cleared out by replacing battery and gas cap, but now it's back on. Prior to replacing the battery, gas cap and an ignition coil (for another issue), the check engine light was flashing off/on. I'm debating whether neighborhood kids are siphoning gas and not replacing the cap tightly enough, but wondering what else it could be.
@@dianelane545 A flashing check engine light means you have severe engine misfire and it should not be driven as it can cause severe damage to the engine and catalytic converter. It also may not drive safely. You need to have an auto parts store put a diagnostic scanner on the vehicle and see what trouble codes it shows.
So in some cases the check engine light actually means to check the engine?! Not just ignore it because California....

When you fill your gas tank, the pump will automatically stop. Don’t top it off after this point. If you overfill your fuel tank, it can mess up your evap system that’s an expensive repair.

I replace the event canister I replace where the neck is. There's another sensor box I replace that I replace the one on the block another sensor I even did smoke and a new cap and light still comes on and my things were under the fuel tank and. Behind the starter and the Halloween was by the fill.All had wires to him.I even put a smoker in there there.There is no leaks

Nice but why does it show up under a 2003 Ford Explorer 4.6 Limited AWD, not the same vehicle at all, same code but doesn't show how on the particular vehicle that people are looking up to learn how otherwise it's a waste of time, people can read the CODE and why and what, there here on UA-cam for one reason only. To fix the issue on that VEHICLE they put in, not the one you showed!!!
