Thank you and I'm glad that this video was the first stop on your new journey, it is a long but very interesting road to go down and once you start learning, you won't stop!
Thanks for the informative video. I'm an Anglo/American thinking about moving our family of three from Florida back to the UK. I already have an interest in the field. I graduated with a BSc. in Earth Science here in the US, where I spent a lot of time in the lab with minerals. While my first love will always be fossils, minerals is a more profitable field and I like how you can do it anywhere. I'm looking forward to starting my courses at GIA!
No problem and glad it was informative. Not sure I would want to give up the weather in Florida for the UK. There is a broader scope for minerals than fossils and I know people who deal with rough specimens and do pretty well for themselves. I've only done online courses with GIA but I'm sure you will enjoy it.
It depends on what course you are taking and the level but it is a mix of theory and practical knowledge. When you are taking the course, they will give you an idea of what you need to know.
Thank you for this informative video! I am currently taking GIA’s GG course online and I would love to work in the industry, preferably in the appraisal field. About the last step you mentioned about getting real life experience, what possible opportunities can an aspiring gemologist take besides retail? During this pandemic, job market is so shrunk and finding a retail job is not easy. Do you have any suggestions for someone who’s starting out? Thank you so much xx
Hi, glad you found the video informative. Yes, the pandemic has made the retail market pretty unstable but as you are looking to become an appraiser, the two best options for you are Pawnbroking and Auction Houses that deal with jewelry. Both will give you experience of dealing with different types of jewelry and gemstones in a commercial environment.
I have a love for gems Crystal's fossiels all of it.and I can easily remember what they are where in the world they are typically mined from.what types of career's can one have being a gemologist.do they make good money and is it hard getting started.thanks to thos that take the time to reply.🤩
Hi, being a gemologist is more about being able to identify what a stone is, if it is natural or man-made, if it has been treated or not and where the stone originated. Career wise, it can vary. You could work in a lab, testing stones to produce reports. You could be a field gemologist, who is visiting mines, looking at what they are producing and potentially buying to get crystals cut into faceted stones. You could be or work for a stone dealer buying stones and selling them to jewelers. You could work for pawnbrokers, auction houses or in retail, the amount of options are varied. As for money, it varies depending on what you decide to do and opportunities can vary, depending on location, demand and qualifications. Hope that helps.
@@HaywoodsGems yes thanks so much not sure if it's for me far as a career is concerned there's alot more too it like you said.but I'll always be a rockhounds I guess.😁
I haven't done it personally but I know some gemmologists who have taken courses there and said it was good, it just doesn't have the same recognition as the courses from the GIA and Gem-A.
@HaywoodsGems Thankyou for getting back to me. This was the conclusion I came to from my research too. Do you think it would limit career possibilities due to this fact that it is not as greatly recognised?
Possibly, I would go for the Gem-A or GIA course personally as I know how well recognised/respected they are and most the people I know who have studied at AIGS already have qualifications from the Gem-A and/or GIA and have gone there to do a specific course.
What lovely vídeo, i just start to study gemology online ,o would like to know any advise about how get training in order to be a good gemology ? Regards
Thank you. My advise would be to get as much hands on training as possible, go to practical workshops etc as this will help you learn. Learning the theory (online, books etc) will only get you so far, you need to see stones in order to understand what you are looking at.
@@HaywoodsGems thak you so much for the advise ,i will have to move to other country, here where i live it's really difficult to get gemstone .regards.
I've heard of it but haven't done any research into it, nor do I know anyone who has done it. If you want to do a course that is going to give you a recognised qualification, then either GIA or Gem-A is the way to go.
Hi, I am thank you and hope you are as well. While IGI are a recognised and respected gem lab, their courses aren't particularly well know in the industry and the Graduate Gemologist (GG) is usually associated with GIA. I would invest in more well known qualification such as one from the GIA or Gem-A.
I’m looking into starting the graduate gemologist program at GIA, how long does it take to finish a graduate gemologist program? I’m getting mixed responses from most places
As most of the course is carried out online, timescales can vary depending on the individual taking it and obviously, the current situation makes the hands on workshops a bit more difficult to plan. It would probably be best to speak to GIA directly and they should be able to give you a good idea as to the timescales you should be looking at.
@@HaywoodsGems Thank you for replying! Is the Graduate Gemologist program good for wanting to go into diamond/colored gems grading and focusing on lab work? I feel most comfortable in a lab setting rather than retail/sales.
No problem, from people I know who have done both the GIA and the Gem-A courses, the Gem-A course is more focused on the science aspect of gemology, which is better for working in a lab. The degree from the University of Birmingham in the UK is arguably the best training you can get for working in a lab.
Helo sir, i need some suggestion! Iam a geology graduate, next i would like to do Gemology.. Iam planning to do graduate in gemology and graduate in diamond from IGI India .. Would i get a good job oriented career? Can i use geology in this gemology Field? After this graduate in gemology and diamond what's the next step?
Hi, firstly, yes your geology degree will be beneficial, especially for dealing with rough material and I know a few Gemologists who come form a geology background. As for a job, it depends as there is no real defined career path for a Gemologist unless you go and work in a grading lab or mining company. Outside of this, it is more of a skill that is required to do other things such as becoming an appraiser. The next step after you graduate is to get as much hands on experience with stones that you can, the best Gemologists are the ones who are constantly hands on with stones.

After which class we need to study the gemologist course? Sir please reply for my above questions 🙏 please! Sir like to study gemology and I'm interested also. So I need to know about it 🤔 so iam asking these many questions sir. Please reply me.
That is a lot of questions and I can't answer some of them as they are specific to India and I have no knowledge about salaries or training in India. There are many courses around the world but ones from recognised institutions will cost upwards of $5,000. A brief & simple description of what a gemologist does, we identify gemstones. I would recommend you use Google (or equivalent) and find someone who is more local to you and ask them as they will likely provide the information that you need.
There is no salary structure for a graduate gemologist as it depends on what type of job you are doing, where in the world you are working, who you are working for, your knowledge, qualifications and experience.
