"we didn't pay to go to school, we just paid to make these mistakes to learn run the business" is probably the best advice any young person could hear right now. Well done.

I'm quite impressed with your work I'll let you quite often and I wish I had the means to do video shows mentor and talk about three different people through the years other night I went through a basic for your apprenticeship to high school and all day Saturdays and then work for the family business for another five years and then ventured out into trade shop and then move down south to sunny Florida. Work with some high-end stuff, customers businesses excetera. But my true beginning started by breaking a crystal that my godfather gave my mother and I took it up to this new George store after my parents divorced and made dope the shopping center and there was a jewelry store and it took forever I had to get it out of Green Bay and this is Northern Wisconsin well I would stop in there just about every other day checking on that Potts Crystal and I got to know the guy by name and all that and I do anyway it's still took forever to get that Crystal.. then through the next couple months I'd be working late after hours after 9 and have the back door open and I dried up on my bike asking about the crystal? And he invited me and I sat on a stool and watch them what he was doing and ask them really good questions.. and my father taught me a lot when I was real young and when I was in junior high in early High School I was in the metals Woods sheet metal drafting excetera excetera always artistic. And then one day in late October I came in and once again asked about the Clock Crystal. And I asked Marty of Dave was in and he said he's in the back, hang on I'll get them for you. I know you came out with a cast on his wrist in his own firm.! We had an unusual early storm in late October, and he was taking a Sportster into the garage and slide out and nailed his wrist in his arm and broke them both. Had that pointy asked me if I wanted a job! And that's where the Story begins.

This is a prime example of someone knowing what they wanna do and very young age and how so blessed they are knowing this! You have been blessed with the gift and that’s what makes you a great jeweler! Yes you studied hard and you learned your craft but you have a natural talent and that’s what’s so wonderful about your gift! At 65 years old I have seen many of people like you that have a gift and they have made a great living in all types of service. However I think it’s a gift plus hard work both combined. Congratulations to you and your beautiful gift!

I love making things. I used to spend all my evening after school picking up scrap metal in the DT workshop and making them into keychains and rings.
I kinda realised as I got older that if I had the resources.. I could make whatever I wanted really.. i’ve ended up making my double bed, desk, wardrobe and a couple of rings (non out of precious metals, I dont trust myself yet).
Would love to make jewellery one day because being at Uni is a ball ache.

Start with silver, and get yourself a teacher. Silver's not too expensive, and if you really can't afford it, copper is a decent alternative, but you're still gonna want to use silver solder. If you can't afford courses (not per se full-time, even just one evening a week works too), watch a lot of youtube and other stuff. Consume as much stuff as you can, there's so much online. Once you get better, get more specific. Learn what you like, learn what you're good at, and just keep improving. And last but perhaps the best tip: If you feel like you're getting good at something or made a really great piece, take it to a jeweler (not just a shop, but one with a workshop in house) and ask them to criticize your piece. It's not nice for your ego but it's good for your learning.

So I recently started mulling over the idea of becoming a jeweler. I'm 40 and really feel like it's a "time is ticking" decision for me. Kind of like a now or never type of deal. I am what most people would call a Jack of all trades, but I'm never more at home than when I'm designing. I absolutely live in the zone when creating for others. This has inspired me and truthfully intimidated me a bit. Dude your ring was "Get the F out of here" cool. Absolutely stunning. That inspires, but then I look at how much time may still be on my clock and the commitment needed to become good to great at the profession is the intimidating part of it to me. How much time do I have left to dedicate myself to something foreign and off of my beaten paths? lol.
I'm going to binge more of your videos and see if it really puts some coals on this smolder I have going here. You are inspiring.

Love your work, your videos, and your story Bobby. I just finished my first year of my apprenticeship and I can say you are EXACTLY right about hardly knowing anything after your first year. You definitely know a lot more than you did when you began, but in terms of knowing anything beyond the basics of jewelry making and repair, you are just now starting to scratch the surface.
I just got hired by a well-known and respected company in Birmingham/AL and I'm working under jewelers that have 16 years, 24 years, and 35 years of experience. And they still learn new things every day. It can be overwhelming once you realize how much there is to learn, but it's incredible how rewarding mastering new skills can be.
Bobby, your work is some of the best I've seen in the world, and I have to thank you for being such an inspiration to me. Your work inspires me and challenges me and we've never even met. I'm hoping one day that will change.

I started my career as a jeweler/gem setter trainee for Tiffany's a couple months ago. Totally fell into the career by accident with no experience with jewelery whatsoever. Had no idea what I was doing and had to learn on the spot, super stressful at first but I figured it out as I went along xD
I fell in love with it the first week and want to keep learning all I can, and someday start my own business down the line.
This was a great video! Very inspring!

How in the world do you get into Tiffany’s as a jeweler with no experience?

    • @sirlink9611
      @sirlink9611 2 роки тому +1

@@nunyabiznes3901 Ok so basically, the facility where the jewelry is made (don't wanna dox myself lol) was having trouble finding experienced jewelers for a while. So they thought, "Well if we can't find jewelers, then why don't we make them?"
So they put together a training program with people of all different levels of experience to be in this program. I knew almost nothing about jewelry but I worked my ass off to learn what I needed to. Don't know if it's just this location or across the board, but apparently I was the 4th person to ever be trained by them in this program. Essentially, I was a "guinea pig". I'm pretty sure they wanted to see what would happen if you took some random kid with no experience off the street and put them into this program, see what happens after a month or two lol. In other words, I was extremely lucky and I was in the right place at the right time.
I wanted to change career paths, heard they were hiring. So I signed an application, didnt think anything of it. Tbh, I didn't expect to hear anything and was just resigned to find a sous chef job (what I was doing for five years at this point)
Long story short, things moved REALLY fast and within a week of applying i got hired for the training program now I'm working full time for them and I've been there ever since! I actually plan on going to GIA in NYC to get my gemologist certificate!
I'm pretty much one of the walking examples of "Fake it till you make it" because eventually, you'll get the hang of it haha

Since I have only watched a few of your videos, I instantly knew that I liked your creativity, BUT I also knew you couldn't just be a natural jeweler, so this was very informative as to the blending of the technical aspect in which you confirmed what I believed that it takes an enormous amount of time to learn the process and of course the vision/creativity of making the jewelry. I do think I'm most fascinated with motion and transformation that you give jewelry. I enjoy the process as much as the bauble finished. Finding new things to do is hard. But I'll just share a little bit. Look at the paintings of the 15th century. Jewelry is in it prominently. Each piece was the person's identity or so it seemed. Plenty to explore there and reimagine. I enjoy your channel very much. Very tactile and kind of natural mechanical.

Yes Bobby i am proud i did my 5 year jewellery apprenticeship. It has been a journey being at the jewellers bench but so rewarding,Sure there are days when a certain job give you uphill but you get it right in the end.I still go through the motions in my mind of certain jobs i made, just wish i had taken photograph's of the work i did.A very satisfying trade no doubt.
