My main motivator is someday having a chest full of rich stuff to run my fingers through. But it would be cool being a field gemologist visiting mines etc too!

I am considering a second career after retirement and interested in working in a gem lab, maybe 10-15 years from now. Do you think this is work that would survive the next 20 years, are there aspects that you think may become automated?
Very difficult to say (as with many careers at the moment), I still think there will be a strong human element as many parts have subtleties such as identifying inclusions to see whether the stone is natural or synthetic and potential origin will be very difficult to automate.

A friend of mine did it for a bit and a few gem dealers who are gemologists have also visited mines and said it is an amazing experience.
