I think Sega needs to do the console where you could purchase all their library from Master system to Dreamcast, at a decent price. Of course have a Blu-ray player 4K player whatever and also have the most recent releases and physical and digital plus take advantage & a bunch of Indies or AA studios for games. Make Yakuza or judgment or Sonic as mascots for advertisement.
Sega is living the dream right now. They can make bank on ALL the consoles with software and don't have to worry about developing and manufacturing hardware. Theres no way they will go back to the console market outside of the mini consoles
The Steam Deck is the real fourth option. It is more of a console experience than that of a PC experience. You don't need any serious technical knowledge to use a Steam Deck. It is also is very cheap, but with great performance per dollar. Additionally, the Steam Deck has sold over 1.5 million units and is backed by a massive gaming company, Valve.
Bro the steam deck hasn't even sold not even a fraction of a fraction of what the switch has sold. It's not a competitor it's not a fourth option. Selling a million is not equal to selling a hundred and twenty million sorry.
I honestly think SEGA could do it 🤔 they’re a publishing giant now and they have the proper name recognition worldwide + they actually do have an insane roster of IPs that a console with exclusives could sell enough for a guaranteed good launch
I’d buy a new Sega console just like I got the Genesis minis. Sega Sammy have a lot of IPs and cash but as much as we Sega fans want a new console it’s a long shot especially for a traditional console anyway. Maybe they can offer a digital only mini console with an “eShop” or subscription service would be possible, maybe even collaborate with gamepass too! IDK I’d buy a new Sega console for sure
As someone who is basically a Nintendo exclusive console player these days because of their incredible first-party exclusives, the only way I could see myself jumping to or adding another platform would be if one of my favorite 3rd party developers like Capcom made their own console where their games would be exclusive to their device.
@@TIDbitRETRO No, it because thwy played it smart nothing ro do with their overrated games really. They can‘t even stack up against ps and xbox which is why they went the pathetic route they went.
@@dextersdad6920 Tell me you play Call of Duty while eating Doritos and drinking Mountain Dew without telling me you play Call of Duty while eating Doritos and drinking Mountain Dew.
Great topic guys! I don't think we'll get a new/re-entry into physical consoles to compete with the big 3. I think the future competition and war will be who can figure out a way to stream games without physical consoles without serious lag & issues. I also think Smart TV's will eventually have a Playstation/Microsoft/Nintendo App built in so you don't even need to buy their consoles anymore. TV"s are basically computers at this point given they have their own app stores so I think we'll see these gaming companies trying to get their apps on as many TV's (some maybe even exclusive like Sony of course) so then when people upgrade their TV's they will also consider what gaming company it may work best with. A sad, bleak future for gaming that's for sure!
This is a good point. Gaming may very well go in this direction. There is however possibility of things going in the opposite direction. Perhaps t.vs are equally at risk of going obsolete. What if some one comes up with a mobile size device which is simultaneously a powerful video game console, phone, pc BUUUUUUT which also projects 4k images onto a mat on the wall YEEEEEET costs a fraction of a big t.v? So T.Vs are as much in danger as the native videogame consoles as we know it now. That said the nature of today's dedicated native video game console WILL change: be very powerful but much tinier. Perhaps Microsoft need to come up with the 'XSMART 3000' Not just a native video game console, or phone or pc (which u type by giving instructions to) but projector and general life pocket assistant.
I think it would be great if Sega did get back into the hardware market. More competition is better for those of us who play games. Plus, I do think there is a market for a Sega system. :)
As much as I would love to have a Dreamcast 2 that will never happen and Sega even said themselves they would never be in the home console business again after what happened to the original Dreamcast That Dreamcast 2 concept/mockup at 2:23 looks really Cool! :)
I feel like Apple could potentially do something, or even Google. I think Stadia was an initial demonstration of what future tech could do, and Microsoft does this very well with cloud gaming.
@@GamingOffTheGrid about 2 hours after I posted this I see the news about Apple's VR headset come out....man I should be getting paid to predict the future 🤣
It's impossible for anyone to enter in the market. Producing new hardware or a new games costs way too much. IMHO we are way nearer to a new game industry crash than we imagine.
For any company to try and make a console they need insane deep pockets (Sony, MS, Google, Apple..), they need to time it correctly and also they need a console maker to stumble. Back in the day Sega messed up with the Sega CD, 32X and then making the Saturn a difficult console to program plus its polygons had been quads instead of triangles which became standard in PC graphics. Sony was able to release a console with a ton of documentation, on a well known CPU (MIPS R3000), 100 dollars less and with a ton of marketing and hype thus crushing Sega and kicking them out by early next gen. If there was a moment to enter the console market it was in 2013 or 2014, MS had stumbled greatly with the original reveal of the Xbox One (TV, Sports, always online, no used games, always on Kinect) plus their console was 100 dollars more and its GPU was inferior to the PS4 with it barely making 900p resolution. If a company had muscled itself in then so many gamers would have bailed on MS.
i think Sega could make a comeback and could be successful but they would need to offer something unique to their system and build around exclusive titles, like Nintendo does. Just with remastering or remaking their legendary catalogs, Sega could actually have something in this market
With the current rise of popularity, I think Sega should make the most powerfully 2d cartridge based system. Like a Neo Geo but with some more modern amenities like online comp. It would be cheap to develop for and easier to crank out some awesome beefed up sequels to some of Sega's franchises mixed in with new IP's. Doesn't have to go head to head with the big boys as it'd be more a nitche product, and the overhead would be much lower. I think multi generations of fans would go nuts for something like that.
I think instead of Sega making a new console, they could just launch a subscription service like Ubisoft with every past console game they ever did, and then add another tier to include their arcade games.
all a company would have to do is simply make a controller for their console and advertise it as "the controller that will never drift", and people will flock towards that.
The sad reality is, although we would love some physical hardware - we just aren’t the target audience anymore. The future is all digital/streaming. Long live the physical era!
I know you said you're not super into VR, but I gotta tell you one of my favourite gaming experiences of the last few years was going in co-op on a light gun style VR game (Crisis Brigade 2). Totally playful, lighthearted game that doesn't take itself seriously and has major old school arcade vibes. I was on PSVR doing online co-op with a friend who lives far away with his Quest 2. One of the few cross-play titles around. I hadn't laughed so much in ages, and when I took off the headset I was staggered how many hours had passed! I also find it kinda interesting that PSVR is likely to be the only time in history that we get physical VR games on disc - every other VR platform is digital. I'm still on the PSVR 1 and it's kinda janky but I love it :)
Sega would need to double down on all things Sega and steer clear of the other consoles’ niches. That means arcade-style sports games, audacious marketing, 2.4 GHz Saturn-style controllers (emphasize how fast they are), a knock-out Sonic title (they should make it a bit slower with tighter controls and keep Sonic mute), and drag all their classic IP’s back into exclusivity. Let’s see a phantasy star 5 that goes big, let’s see a shining force 4, lets see a shinobi 4 that takes Sekiro’s groundwork and runs with it. They don’t need blurays (ppl stream) and they don’t need the most powerful system. They need a fun, fast, colourful arcade system that’s plug and play and can capture the mainstream’s imagination. It’d be tough but I also think the internet would meme Sega back to the top.
I don’t think a new console that competes with Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo is possible unless Amazon or Apple gave it a go. Google already tried a streaming service and failed so I don’t see them trying again.
If Sega made another console that would be insane. They have a good track record with the Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, etc so it isn’t too crazy to imagine
@@Dadee3 From a business standpoint, sure, you could argue that their track record isn’t great, but they had good games on those systems and a lot they could put out exclusively if they were to make another one
A new competitor would need a killer app. Microsoft had Halo, Nintendo had Mario, Sony had Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider. And all those games made people say, "Wow, I need to play that!" It's the software that drives hardware. As for who could make a new console, I could see hardware developers like Nvidia or Razor making a console. Or somebody like Scuff making their controllers only compatible with their box. But what I think would be most interesting is if game developers created their own console. Nintendo is an example of that, right. They make their hardware around how they want to play their games. What kind of console would From Software make? Or Blizzard Activision (if they didn't get bought out by Microsoft)?
pretty much nailed what I'm thinking, although I don't think it has to be Sega. I remember when Xbox first came out and a lot of us were like "haha Microsoft is making a game console" then it came out and the next thing you know the same people are having Halo parties in their apartments and dorms. I think anyone who can accomplish these things can be successful: 1. offer some exclusive games/experiences the other three don't, 2. strong third party support so no one has to buy your system + another if they don't want to, 3. provide something innovative 4. keep a price point that's accessible to most.
I think consoles will move away from consoles that have the processing power in your home, and rather become streaming devices. If Sega were to join with a traditional console, they don't have much time left or even if this is good timing at all. Also, I think they wouldn't be able to muster up the budget to develop and produce something that competes with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Hypothetically, if they were to do it, people will be hyped surely. Sega is discussed and referenced to nostalgically so much in this community, for a new generation being able to have the chance to taste a piece of that Sega pie today would be appealing to a lot of people. But I think it would wear off quickly too. Don't think it'll happen. They'd probably have to burn some bridges in terms of their licensed games too. Remember, Sonic and their old IP's were exclusive to their consoles and thus added to the appeal.
I don't see SEGA doing anything beyond a retro reboot or classic console that's focused on backwards compatibility. It is more likely that a newcomer or several newcomers will enter the scene once we hit peak digital. I'd imagine various streaming-centric 'consoles' eventually - furthermore - I'd even venture to guess that they'll all be more or less identical in terms of capabilities with respective libraries or licensing being the only differentiating factor. Console wars ended decades ago - it's a legacy mindset.
I enjoy these hypothetical/discussion videos. To chip in: -Sega would be a logical competitor, especially with their fanbase, but they would have to be quick. -After Phil Spencer interview "great games don't shift consoles"( loose quote lol). They really should splash on SEGA and get them exclusive...but I feel they missed the boat with this, it shoulda been sealed with the original xbox. -With everyone strongly expecting a digital only future, it would be very dangerous to throw their hat in the ring. But, IF, they were to invest and be serious about it...then I think Netflix could join the fight. They could pull on Netflix shows and create something special. But they would have to truly commit and open a whole new division and financially support it. Great topic 🤘
DC 2 would be amazing, but thinking back to what made the original so outstanding i.e. graphics ahead of its time, near arcade perfect gaming and console exclusive games..I don't see that being recreated this day and age. If they can somehow give this an exclusive arcade at home feel, I think it would get people paying attention again. Great topic, cheers broskis!
I think any new competitor in this industry would have to carve out a niche that doesn’t currently exist. Google tried to do this with Stadia and failed in part because the high end gaming streaming experience is too inconsistent in quality and laggy. If Google couldn’t find a way to do it, cloud gaming isn’t ready for prime time. At this point the only thing I could see possibly working is someone like Apple or Samsung leaning on the impressive level of computing power that most people already carry around in their pocket. If they released a dock with a controller for under $100 that would allow higher end software running on a smartphone to be played on a larger TV, there could be a market for people that don’t want to shell out $300-$500 dollars for a traditional console but want a similar experience. The key would be to also offer an online store front (like the PSN or eShop) that allowed for a large number of games to be available at competitive prices.
The reason I bought a PS2 way back in the days was because I was looking for a DVD player and wanted a gaming system. They made it all in one, it was a no Brainer for me. If a new system comes out from an unknown competitor, I think they need to offer something unique that only they can offer. At the very least it'll open up doors for sales. Now, whether it's good or not will be the issue. Sony perfected back in those days.
Ive written about my idea of future vide game console above. My opinion is that future video game console will have different appearance and capabilities. Future game consoles will imho be much smaller: same size as mobile phone or smaller. They will have multiple capabilities e.g., holographic projection onto walls, transmition of images onto futuristic glass tvs as well as transmission of images onto vr shades. SSDs n HDMI cable all those modes of storage n transmission will be obsolete by then. Modes of Human interaction with virtual world will expand. We'll probably get sensors to put on our torso, limbs m extremities to detect leaning n limb movement especially in virtual worlds. We may also get clothes that emulate heat, cold, wind, shock or intense sensations as well as putty pads which fit in our hands but move in our hands like a living thing such as a cat or human hands would feel in our hand.🙂🙃😉 my vision of gaming in the future
I think the closest new "console" competitor we've seen is Google Stadia. Even with Alphabets deep pockets they couldn't get that off the ground reliably. In the AAA game space its been pretty stagnant on innovation. Its the AA and indy scene where anything new is being made. Its going to take a Gaming Market crash (which i see coming) for the next "big thing" to happen.
Google Stadia was a decent idea but I think their execution was off--I think if your "console" is just a service, you shouldn't have to buy the individual games at retail in addition to the membership. Should be like a Netflix of games. Also Google has been pretty bad at dropping their projects without warning so a lot of us were already wary of this ;)
There will never be a video game market crash lmao these are well established big companies with deep pockets and there are more gamers now than there has ever been in history ranging from hardcore gamers to casuals.
@@G18999 yeah the original video game crash had to do with lots of broken promises to the consumer, and we've been blown away by so many amazing games since then that we just shrug off the bad games as bad games and don't buy them. Can't imagine it crashing now.
I used to think a crash was going to be coming now. I really don't know on one hand, yes, we live in a time. Where we're constantly getting let down by companies. But on the other hand, people are stupid and if people can't even be talked into not buying the new Madden, that's just a slightly better pile of s*** than the last Madden was that speaks volumes.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't think there's not going to be a crash because of the companies involved and they're inability to fulfill their own promises and God forbid not rip us off or not. Try to rip us off. I don't think there's going to be a crash because people are too stupid and too stubborn to let there be a crash. I could be wrong but I only recall one instance of a game. An annual game doing so bad. It caused a severe drop in sales which caused the company to actually change the next game and that was WWE 2k20. Like I said if there was another game and I forgot my bad, old age. I used to think people would get to a point where they had it with these companies and their attempts to take every single nickel and dime from us, in the most dopefiend, dishonest, manipulative, evil, underhanded ways possible. Now I realize I was wrong. I gave other people TOO MUCH credit. I sadly misjudged people and their stupidity. I guess that's a good thing though because that means I will likely see a call of duty modern warfare 26 in my lifetime lol.
To be honest, Valve has made themselves a major competitor in the space in a very short space of time. I can imagine in 5 years time, Valve will be a bigger player than Microsoft and the Big 3 will slowly start becoming Sony, Nintendo and Valve.
It would be difficult for a new competitor to enter the console space. I would love a new SEGA console. I doubt they ever will again like you said they can just license out the game and let the other companies sell it for them. Best thing I can see SEGA doing besides another mini would be something cloud based. Maybe something like a Amazon Fire stick plug and play (probably subscription based) call it the SEGA HIGH-DEFINITION STICK
It would be very difficult like what you guys said, it has to be very established at the start. If Sega made a console my hypothetical idea of it would be: -Priced around $350(maybe $400) -Not as good as ps5 or series X but slightly better overall then the Series S in terms of specs. - Has to be backcompat with all segas consoles(at least the games both physical and digital, maybe even allowing people to download the game if it sees/recognizes the actual physical game in slot.) -With^ in place might make the console pretty large(but I wouldn't care but would know people won't like it) so the games for this console would be bigger type of switch like cartridge's -Have both tons of newer games/ip's(and ofc older^) that are console exclusive. -Tons of demos, free to play games (ie like fortnite and warframe etc), aswell as 3rd party AAA/AA games at launch or within the first few weeks. -Lastly without going too long into it is also, partnering up with Atari or other use to be big names to put their games in the online store(maybe get a lot of the games from the VCS on the new Sega console too?).
I know Sega are big in the retro space and still have a few contemporary games around, but are they really a big household name for the younger/modern gamer? I've got nothing against them but I'm not sure if their 'name' has the same kind of power it used to.
lol they can try to use buzzwords such as "internet", "4k 200fps" and "fortnite" to briainwash kids but id lik sega to be diffrent if they enter the console market again for more older aged gamers than 12 year olds
Anything unique that would be appealing to the masses would be less risky to the inventor/owner by having it absorbed by 1,2 or all 3 of the big 3. The tricky part would be a lack of a user install for any up and comer. Something that I would like SEGA and/or NAMCO to do is create a plug and play "light gun" peripheral that is compatible with the "big 3", everything is USB plug-in these days anyway.
A new console would have to be cartridge style that looks like something from the 16-bit era. So many companies still make new games for nes, snes and genesis. I'd want a console that supports those companies. The number one complaint about those mini systems was that we couldn't connect it to anything to buy more games. Sony, Microsoft and Ninendo have so much money and experience, no one will beat them with technology or brand recognition.
It was never “just sega and nintendo” 🙄🤦♂️ thankfully the older guy corrected that. Let’s not forget Atari Jaguar, Lynx, 3DO, and yes the various NEC consoles in America and abroad.
I actually really enjoy VR, but like you said everyone got it and then a few months later went back to playing consoles. It's a social thing and when you have no one to play with it starts to lose its appeal.
Sony and Microsoft consoles are essentially PCs right now, only with their branded dashboards/OS. Steam decks are more like consoles in the form factor and portability. Nintendo is well, doing Nintendo. I think what you're seeing is a continued blending of what a console is from these companies and with that I think it opens the doors to all sorts of new entries. Look at the cheap Anbernic handheld devices as an example of impressive hardware that is also affordable.
What would be awesome would be a common hardware reference platform across all consoles, similar to x86 for PCs or the old 3DO model where different manufacturers made the same console. They could all agree on a common operating system (like Android) and then 100 different manufacturers would make hardware, all compatible. Where the brands would differ would be in the case and controller design and in the app store, Sega, Microsoft, Atari, Sony, etc. This would force competitors to innovate in the games space.
Sega is really only one who could but they need alot of cash flow on hand. Way I see it any one that wants in on the big 3 has to be good with playing 4th fiddle. Sega would need to secure some type of deal with square and capcom with exclusives. Also sega owns Atlus so they could keep stuff like Persona own their console only. It would have to be the dreamcast 2, it would need to do 4k and atleast keep up with the ps5. Expand on the VMU make it in color and more functional than the original. And not sure if they would do bluray or the sd card route but I think the thing would be to some how stay physical while keeping costs low. Sega would use thier IP's and get someone like capcom on board which they were tight with in the original dreamcast era, It would be like nintendo, most people own their stuff cause they want to play the first party games. Now maybe someone like amazon or something wants to get involved their best bet would be to either obtain or partner with sega. I honestly dont think it would be much of a gamble for sega as long as you know your spot and make smart business moves. If they go in with the mindset of beating the others they will fail, just gotta fall into your niche and give a reason for people to come to your system.
I think there is room, definitely. But not to just repeat what we already have. I would like to see a competitor come in and really innovate instead of just chasing the best graphics and the most power. We need new IPs and ideas.
There ya go boys, this is what I'm talking about!! It's like I've been saying for a long time in the comments...a new or existing company can come thru and really shake things up with the right approach and maybe even help keep physical gaming alive for those of us gamers who love physical games and yet, create new IPs and equipment. A CD can be made by anyone. A cartridge or SD card can be made by anyone. I can't wait to see what comes along. Here's to ingenuity and creativity fellas. Cheers!🍻👍😎 #Sega #PhysicalForever
I think sega could take a couple routes, I’m adding I’m gaming in general rather than just console. 1.) Sega could decide to go more PC rather than console, either making a competitor to valve’s steam or making pc parts like a sega gpu & cpu ect or they make pre-built PC’s. 2.) They just make a handheld, there’s a lot more room in the market to jump in. 3.) make some VR device revolutionize that market. 4.) The console route, gotta give consumers a reason to buy it, they could make it the most powerful idk what the price would be though. Exclusives have been used to get people to buy consoles but those are kinda not enough & dying, I think it would be badass if sega went “All our games are available on every device & we’re still gonna dominate the console space ” having a successful console without exclusives. Services are the new thing to get customers so they would probably need a gamepass equivalent, maybe cheaper or better yet no online subscription, streaming service, maybe more frequent game sales, other services ect. 5.) make a strange pc/console hybrid have a console but you have a set amount of parts you can swap in & out so like sega back in the day gotta slap the 32x on the genesis but instead sega sells maybe 7 APUs you can buy then a bunch of ram & power supplies but these only work with sega devices so it’s still kinda a closed system & you can’t just buy say an Nvidia gpu or Intel cpu. You can make your sega device as powerful or weak as you want
It would be really nice to have SEGA back. Their trademark seat-of-their-pants devil-may-care attitude is something the industry could really use right now. I'd take NEC or SNK too though. Is it possible now to do what Sony or Microsoft did? Probably not. Microsoft itself only got into the console triumvirate because they were willing to eat an enormous loss on the original Xbox selling the hardware for much less than it was worth and marketing the hell out of it, then again with the red ring of death, and PlayStation simply offered the best product at the time. Cheap, easy to program for, expansive library, had disks, and wasn't Sega, because no one trusted them after the CD and 32x. Nowadays, you can't compete with Nintendo's exclusivity and rabidly loyal fanbase, you can't compete with Xbox's value for money with Game Pass, and you can't compete with Sony's market share. VR's library is still so incredibly weak that it's not worth the enormous price of entry. It was pushed out before it was ready to go to market. It's basically still a dev kit with 5 decent games on it. The Steam Deck has a real shot once it drops in price but, really the only thing a company could do to compete now is to make a console that actually has some good exclusive games on it. Oh, fuckin' GOT 'EM! Up top. Anyone?
I know Valve failed with the steam console, but I really think they would be the ones to make it work if they tried again. It would be the best console for sure, cause if it's like the steam deck you can install emulators you'd have the best library of games. They would seriously need to improve the convenience that a traditional console has where you load up the game and it just works no tinkering needed. If they could make a steam deck that when docked does like the ROG ally and have an external video card that can be hooked to it and improve the TV experience, that would be amazing. Right now you can use any controller you want with the steam deck, ps5 dual sense, joycons, 3rd party controllers, etc. Not to mention the other benefits of free online play and the steam sales are really nice.
Once everything goes to digital. What do u think will happen with physical games?? Will it effect the prices on old physical games and consoles?? Will a new boom in physical old school games happen or will people just not care about physical anymore?
Would be Super Awesome if Sega would release a system with all there ips, especially arcades never released, dreamcast, Saturn and etc. With translation support is a must. Know we didn't experience those Japanese saturn imports. SEGA, we're waiting patiently!!🙏🙏🙏
It does seem we've moved from hardware innovation to software / service innovation - as you said, I don't think a new console would be different enough to stand out 😀 Unless someone could bring a back catalogue of games from across multiple platforms via an online store, on dedicated hardware (looking at you Analogue Pocket), there would be nothing to play on a new console for a few years too.
@FastSmoke328 I'm with you - the services are pretty meh anyway, and I'd rather have a friend sitting next to me split screen than play online every time.
Exactly Sega would essentially be used for brand recognition and a way to provide high quality exclusives The company let's say samsung would be the ones distributing, developing and creating the hardware.
Please God please ! Let this happen ! This neeeeds to happen ! A resurgence of sega would I think bring back healthy console wars … what could it be called Sega 1 Dreamcast 2 Genesis 2
It's way too expensive for anyone to get into the hardware business in this era. And the corporate espionage that would go on to keep an outsider from coming back into that triple Monopoly would be interesting. But I do miss back in the 90s when there was like 10 systems on the market. Go look at a gamepro from 1995 you'll see at the top there's so many different consoles listed it was such a glorious time with so much competition. I don't think we'll ever see those days again. Also just to add a comment about the 2K thing. I remember back then in the early 2000s the 2K sports games were getting more popular with gamers than EA and it hit a head in 2005 when 2K released nfl2k 5 at twenty bucks brand new and it's slaughtered Madden that year so bad that he a locked up the NFL license after that Great video guys!
This video hit a lot of nostalgic levels for me 989 sports I remember super cross circuit for ps1 I loved that game. Seeing the football game by 989 triggered that memory back
I think Nintendo is in a unique positon. It's not as powerfull but it still sells more because they have good API's and is a more affordable option. Nintendo do very well with games for younger kids. Sega could do things their way as well without being just another PC pretending to be a console. Sega could provide their own games and API's, but also include the community to make games on it, as an open platform with good and user friendly tools. It could also serve as an educational device. My point is, they could offer something new and different.
Great question guys. It would take a lot for another company to go "Head To Head" with the BIG 3.If it was a new Home Console, I can't see it happening as Game Developers would have to develop new games for the new piece of kit. The only company I could possibly see (But Very Unlikely) to enter the race would be Samsung, they certainly know their shit when it comes to handheld devices. I'm sure they could create a Hybrid console similar to the Switch but it had the latest PC releases on Cartridges.
I've wondered whether, with advances in projector technology, it would be possible to create a console with a built-in projector, thus removing the need for the TV altogether. A new entrant with an idea like that could carve a place for itself. That said, having watched Microsoft's 'Power On' series, I was struck by just how challenging it was to break into the industry - even for a mega technology corporation like Microsoft. Anyway, good topic.
Great topic for discussion! Apple is the only company that could enter the console space now with the money to make a sustained impact. They already have the Apple TV 4K device that plays games through the Apple Arcade service, All they need to do is beef it up, add more memory, buy some more developers, and get higher-end games from the Mac ported, and they would have a console. The cool thing is that they already allow you to use an Xbox or Playstation controller with it.
I feel like a big part of the future of gaming is not in the hands of the gaming industry but hi-tech. What I'm thinking is how fast the technology of data transmission will develop, how soon we will get 5G or even 6G, that will allow us to stream easily and freely in any part of the globe any amount of data. At that point all consoles will basically become streaming services - Stadia 2.0 if you will :) I hate this idea, but I feel this is where we are heading. Game Studios will become what in the music industry now are Record Labels - they will lease their titles to different streaming platforms and depending where we have a subscription, that's how we will access their games.
It would take Sega partnering with one of the tech companies w infinite money, like Amazon / Google/ Apple etc. Otherwise Sega would not have the pocket book to compete w Sony or Microsoft. And Amazon/ Google / Apple would need Sega for their video game expertise. But it's not happening any time soon. Niche stuff you mentioned like Evercade, Analogue Pocket, Atari VCS, Polymega, are the only alternatives we will have for a while.
I’d love to see a new Sega console, but i also don’t see it happening. You’re both right about it pretty much only being something Sega could do. You briefly touched on Atari failing at a console launch. They always go for the money grab over quality, so of course it failed! When the gameplay is to keep pushing the 2600 in 2023, then good luck with that. I love some Atari IPs but i cannot stand them as a company. Sega though… they announce a console and it’s “shut up and take my money”
The Evercade console is doing it right. Cheap physical games to purchase! Sega could copy that formula and give the evercade some competition. I'd love to see it!
Very thought provoking topic. I think Sega could pull it off. Call it the Dreamcast 2 . People may gravitate towards the system. Excellent video gentleman! 👍🏻🍺
With development costs being so high, I sadly find it hard to see many companies willing to take the risk of making a new console. Since we're talking about dreamcast, I'd love it if Xbox could patch in compatibility with dreamcast discs on their consoles similar to how their backward compatibility works with Xbox and Xbox 360 games.
I think the one with the best shot would be valve. they have that huge library and have been tweaking their linux and big picture support on games as well as their experience with the steamdeck. They also tried once before with the steamboxes and they even designed their own controller.
I think if digital ends up failing and if companys like xbox and sony selling their consoles than i think that there would be a solid base that might buy since their is less systems on the market
It would be cool to see but Sega is such a mess, I can’t see them ever being a force in the console market again. They don’t even have the confidence to make a Saturn or Dreamcast mini. They are just gonna keep milking the genesis until the end of time.
Valve would need some significant internal changes company wise but they've got a product in SteamOS that can compete. Apple, Amazon, Meta and Tencent all have the funds and gaming interests to do more. But is there anything for them in the physical hardware market? And Google already shit the bed with Stadia. Traditional old skool physical consoles is becoming a dead paradigm. The eyes are still on Streaming/Gaming Netflix, but Streaming will never be it. I think the future is in mobile+subscription. Gamepass, Switch and SteamDeck are all pointing this way. It's something Apple, Amazon, or Tencent could really push into. Steam Deck/Switch like hybrid with a Gamepass like subscription? From Apple or Amazon? Not impossible.
At a time, you had Sega Saturn, PlayStation, N64, Panasonic 3DO, Atari Jaguar, Neo Geo CD, on the market, at the same time. "Is there room?" is the wrong question... "Can it deliver?" is the question. Well, until Microsoft bought up most of the gaming companies. Because of that... No one, outside the current competitors, would dare to jump in to the console market. Microsoft kind of put a stop to that. Which was probably a part of their goal.
Sega would have to do something VERY special. We do not live in a realm of just 3 consoles (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) We have TONS of devices that people are playing on: PCs, mobile phones, tablets, Apple TVs and other streaming boxes, Steam Deck all it's clones, Chinese retro handhelds, Analogue, etc., etc., etc.
I think this discussion should revolve around what happens with Xbox. If Microsoft stops making consoles, will some other big company step in to take their place? It is definitely possible, given how Microsoft is pushing PC integration and services like GamePass (also, Phil Spencer admitted that Xbox will never catch PlayStation in console sales). I think the next generation or two will see a clear change in strategy for the Xbox. The only way I see Microsoft staying in the game long-term is if they start making consoles that can also be used as PCs, in order to appease both sides. If they don’t, some other company might seize the opportunity.
Sega would have to do exclusives and huge support for the indie market, not worry about what the likes of Playstation and Microsoft are doing. Aim for something in line with Nintendo and create some direct competition for them with family friendly games appealing to a larger audience rather than chasing frame rate because the cost would bankrupt them. Then bring back all the old classics reimagined like Streets 4 and make them exclusive, all of us old school sega fans would be on that and with some luck the family friendliness of the games could help sell the console. It's a pipe dream but it would be awesome, a Shinobi game with Streets 4 art style, hell yeah. Wouldn't hurt having the backlog of console games available either the way Nintendo has
I think the only way for SEGA to make a comeback in some capacity would be if they'd partner up with Microsoft and release a handheld/hybrid with XBOX Series S specs in Japan under the SEGA brand. Handhelds are still super popular in Japan. Sony has pretty much abandoned that market, and Microsoft has never had a presence there to begin with. Nintendo is dominating the market with zero competition but the Switch is winding down and its future is uncertain. Hence now would be the right time to challenge Nintendo and gain some marketshare.
Atari tried the VCS a few years ago and it bombed. So track records of old brands coming back isn't good. I think it would have to be a hardware company (maybe partnering with Sega) as the only way of getting into this market.
Personally I couldn't see anyone jumping into that space because of the cost and physical unfortunately is dying. However, cloud base gaming will be a thing and all the companies having a game pass like service. Yeah, I can see that because it will be super low cost for the companies.
I wish Sega would release a new console. I’d buy it in a heartbeat. Dreamcast is one of my favorite consoles of all time.
Such an underrated gem! 🍻
This. So good!
Damnit i would beg my dad for a new sega console if it comes out i got a genesis and i absolutley love it
Tell em
Same i would do everything to buy the console so i play the dream cast games too
I think Sega needs to do the console where you could purchase all their library from Master system to Dreamcast, at a decent price. Of course have a Blu-ray player 4K player whatever and also have the most recent releases and physical and digital plus take advantage & a bunch of Indies or AA studios for games. Make Yakuza or judgment or Sonic as mascots for advertisement.
That would be an awesome idea! Alot of people would buy it! 🍻
C’mon Sega! What are you waiting for?!
Imagine a GTA, WWE game on a Sega Console
You mean like a mega collection of Sega games? It has been done before, over and over.
@@alexanderarce3341 GTA 5 released on SEGA console lmao cmon bro.
Sega is living the dream right now. They can make bank on ALL the consoles with software and don't have to worry about developing and manufacturing hardware. Theres no way they will go back to the console market outside of the mini consoles
i mean, they dont half to compete tho. Nintendo realized the game competition was pointless years ago when the made the wii
Before this, they tried to make a literal Steam console that was a set top box with controllers, and this of course was more successful.
Bro the steam deck hasn't even sold not even a fraction of a fraction of what the switch has sold. It's not a competitor it's not a fourth option. Selling a million is not equal to selling a hundred and twenty million sorry.
I don't think a new console is coming. Sega should do it but wont

A new next Gen Sega console with the ability to insert original genesis, master system and dream cast carts/disks would be incredible
I honestly think SEGA could do it 🤔
they’re a publishing giant now and they have the proper name recognition worldwide + they actually do have an insane roster of IPs that a console with exclusives could sell enough for a guaranteed good launch
I would like to see that cooming someday
@@soukainaftaihi4119damnit that would be amazing
I’d buy a new Sega console just like I got the Genesis minis. Sega Sammy have a lot of IPs and cash but as much as we Sega fans want a new console it’s a long shot especially for a traditional console anyway. Maybe they can offer a digital only mini console with an “eShop” or subscription service would be possible, maybe even collaborate with gamepass too! IDK I’d buy a new Sega console for sure
Sega said something about messing around with VR a while back. That was the reason they made their new logo that eyeball with the Sega logo on it.
As someone who is basically a Nintendo exclusive console player these days because of their incredible first-party exclusives, the only way I could see myself jumping to or adding another platform would be if one of my favorite 3rd party developers like Capcom made their own console where their games would be exclusive to their device.

Sega needs to come back. It's high time.
For sure! more competition will always be better for the consumers! 🍻
As much as I would love to have a Dreamcast 2 that will never happen and Sega even said themselves they would never be in the home console business again after what happened to the original Dreamcast
That Dreamcast 2 concept/mockup at 2:23 looks really Cool! :)
Would be so cool to see a non internet based console from sega
Yes it would! Make couch co op great again! 🍻
I feel like Apple could potentially do something, or even Google. I think Stadia was an initial demonstration of what future tech could do, and Microsoft does this very well with cloud gaming.
Yeah Apple is at the top of our mind as a possibility with there big brand! 🍻
@@GamingOffTheGrid about 2 hours after I posted this I see the news about Apple's VR headset come out....man I should be getting paid to predict the future 🤣
The only way someone can compete with the big three is if they bring exclusive aaa’s. Id be interested what kojima or capcom would do with a console.
Those would be interesting companies to get involved! 🍻
*popularity of retro gaming*
We would definitely be all for it! Great idea! 🍻
Being diffrent makea alot of money, i would buy it.
I think instead of Sega making a new console, they could just launch a subscription service like Ubisoft with every past console game they ever did, and then add another tier to include their arcade games.
I would!!!
all a company would have to do is simply make a controller for their console and advertise it as "the controller that will never drift", and people will flock towards that.
The sad reality is, although we would love some physical hardware - we just aren’t the target audience anymore.
The future is all digital/streaming. Long live the physical era!
That does seem to be the way its heading! 🍻
I'm dying for a company besides Nintendo (Switch) to use carts, to keep physical collecting alive.
*Their track record with the Dreamcast went horrible, quit the cap.*
@@Dadee3 From a business standpoint, sure, you could argue that their track record isn’t great, but they had good games on those systems and a lot they could put out exclusively if they were to make another one
@@phenom504 *That I agree with. They would have to come out with strong exclusives out the gate to get people interested.*
Sega could launch with persona 6, new sonic game and unicorn overlord. They would sell 7 million consoles at launch hands down!
I enjoy these hypothetical/discussion videos. To chip in:
-Sega would be a logical competitor, especially with their fanbase, but they would have to be quick.
I went to E3 in 2013 and got drunk with an executive from SEGA. He told me that there’s no way they’ll make another console. 😢
Yeah we can definitely understand that! 🍻
If Sega made a console my hypothetical idea of it would be:
-Priced around $350(maybe $400)
-Not as good as ps5 or series X but slightly better overall then the Series S in terms of specs.
- Has to be backcompat with all segas consoles(at least the games both physical and digital, maybe even allowing people to download the game if it sees/recognizes the actual physical game in slot.)
-With^ in place might make the console pretty large(but I wouldn't care but would know people won't like it) so the games for this console would be bigger type of switch like cartridge's
-Have both tons of newer games/ip's(and ofc older^) that are console exclusive.
-Tons of demos, free to play games (ie like fortnite and warframe etc), aswell as 3rd party AAA/AA games at launch or within the first few weeks.
-Lastly without going too long into it is also, partnering up with Atari or other use to be big names to put their games in the online store(maybe get a lot of the games from the VCS on the new Sega console too?).
free online multiplayer could also be an interesting selling point against the PS5/Xbox/Switch if they managed to pull that off

There talking about a completely streaming console, just a dongle and a controller.
I too thinks its stupid being digital.
Yeah we definitely dont want it to happen but can see it! 🍻
The money is in the software. Sega is probably content just doing that right now
Fully agree! 🍻
Yeah we never been too big into it! 🍻
I agree Sega deserves more love and should release something special in the future it did die after the sega dreamcast but there might be hope
Lots of great options there! Be cool if they went down 1 of those routes! 🍻
I’m only speaking for myself, but the last thing I need is another platform to create a backlog for.
I just want someone to try the 6 face button layout to bring some variety again like the Duke or Saturn controller.
The good ole Duke! Love thr controller! 🍻
Capcom can make a box, considering they have so many IPs...but that would hurt sales
I hope they do. The Dreamcast was a fantastic console that I truly loved. If Sega decides to come back with a new console I will buy one
Ouya will probably take over the console market.
We dont know for sure! But theres a good possibility old retro games get a boost from it! 🍻
I want sega to make a Dreamcast mini tbh because they barley re release those games and they’re super expensive now
We been waiting for one! That would be awesome! 🍻
Would be Super Awesome if Sega would release a system with all there ips, especially arcades never released, dreamcast, Saturn and etc. With translation support is a must. Know we didn't experience those Japanese saturn imports.
SEGA, we're waiting patiently!!🙏🙏🙏
soon, 499, next gen (ps6 gen).
The GTA BOX, the only system to be able to play GTA.
Steam deck is truly an alternative option in this modern day that’s been able to penetrate the market and offer gaming on the go
We hear lots of good things about it! Maybe we dive more into the future! 🍻
@@GamingOffTheGrid Get one you won't regret it. Just for emulation alone.
It does seem we've moved from hardware innovation to software / service innovation - as you said, I don't think a new console would be different enough to stand out 😀
Unless someone could bring a back catalogue of games from across multiple platforms via an online store, on dedicated hardware (looking at you Analogue Pocket), there would be nothing to play on a new console for a few years too.
well not me, i give more shits about the games and hardware than i do service or internet.
Im stuck in 2007 anyway.
@FastSmoke328 I'm with you - the services are pretty meh anyway, and I'd rather have a friend sitting next to me split screen than play online every time.
Sega needs to partner with a hardware maker or merge with one with the deep pockets and established hardware engineers to make this even possible.
Exactly
Sega would essentially be used for brand recognition and a way to provide high quality exclusives
The company let's say samsung would be the ones distributing, developing and creating the hardware.
Please God please ! Let this happen ! This neeeeds to happen ! A resurgence of sega would I think bring back healthy console wars … what could it be called
Sega 1
Dreamcast 2
Genesis 2
It's way too expensive for anyone to get into the hardware business in this era. And the corporate espionage that would go on to keep an outsider from coming back into that triple Monopoly would be interesting.
But I do miss back in the 90s when there was like 10 systems on the market. Go look at a gamepro from 1995 you'll see at the top there's so many different consoles listed it was such a glorious time with so much competition. I don't think we'll ever see those days again.
Also just to add a comment about the 2K thing. I remember back then in the early 2000s the 2K sports games were getting more popular with gamers than EA and it hit a head in 2005 when 2K released nfl2k 5 at twenty bucks brand new and it's slaughtered Madden that year so bad that he a locked up the NFL license after that
Great video guys!
Sega should release a new console in partnership with Apple
5 companies that arthe top in my opinion:
-Sony
-Sega
-Microsoft
-Valve
-Nitendo.
Thats a solid list! agreed! 🍻
I wish it could happwn
The Evercade console is doing it right. Cheap physical games to purchase! Sega could copy that formula and give the evercade some competition. I'd love to see it!
Yeah we just dove into the Evercade not that long ago! Enjoying it thus far! 🍻
Very thought provoking topic. I think Sega could pull it off. Call it the Dreamcast 2 . People may gravitate towards the system. Excellent video gentleman! 👍🏻🍺
That woule be so awesome! 🍻
Lucidcast sounds great too
With development costs being so high, I sadly find it hard to see many companies willing to take the risk of making a new console. Since we're talking about dreamcast, I'd love it if Xbox could patch in compatibility with dreamcast discs on their consoles similar to how their backward compatibility works with Xbox and Xbox 360 games.
I think it would be interesting if Apple would enter the console market. They have the capital, marketing and tech
They are one of the first we think of! There brand is definitely big enough! 🍻
Sonic dream team yeah!!
They’d just be a rip off like always
I think the one with the best shot would be valve. they have that huge library and have been tweaking their linux and big picture support on games as well as their experience with the steamdeck. They also tried once before with the steamboxes and they even designed their own controller.
Sega will be cooking something beautifully
Damn I f'n hope so!!!
Bruh if they make a console it shuld be called galaxydrift.
😂 nice name! 🍻
I think if digital ends up failing and if companys like xbox and sony selling their consoles than i think that there would be a solid base that might buy since their is less systems on the market
Another great episode...I was tuned in for the Zelda live stream, but it wouldn't allow me to send messages. Anyways hope all is well guys cheers
It would be cool to see but Sega is such a mess, I can’t see them ever being a force in the console market again. They don’t even have the confidence to make a Saturn or Dreamcast mini. They are just gonna keep milking the genesis until the end of time.
A Saturn mini would be awesome simply because all of the Saturn games are stupidly expensive now.
If Atari was Sega, the VCS WOULD HAVE BEEN EPIC!
Yeah Sega would of done it better! 🍻
We do not live in a realm of just 3 consoles (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft)
We have TONS of devices that people are playing on: PCs, mobile phones, tablets, Apple TVs and other streaming boxes, Steam Deck all it's clones, Chinese retro handhelds, Analogue, etc., etc., etc.
Microsoft is not leaving its console business and SEGA have no plans to get back to making consoles again SEGA is all about making games always been!!
The next system that combine social media with gaming will crush it.
Definitely can see that happening someday! 🍻
I had a friend who had the sega channel....? The online thing in the 90's. I loved it
Yeah had a buddy also! Way ahead of its time! 🍻
