Power Stone 2 and Jet Grind Radio are my favorite Dreamcast games I recently played through the entirety and streamed all of Jet Grind Radio on official Dreamcast hardware in one sitting.
The House of the Dead 2 for me! That was why the DC was the first console I ever bought at launch, with the Gameboy Advance being the next, and only other one), and couldn't wait to play that great game at home in arcade perfect form too!
I worked at Blockbuster also. I remember the release of the Dreamcast. I would rent one of them all the time. I ended up quitting, so I didnt know they dropped support. I ended up buying one at price cut. I love the eccentric games Sega put out. Sadly, I had to give in and get a PS2. I liked the PS2 but I didn't have the same fondness that I do for the Dreamcast. I still have mine that's about 5 feet away from me. I'm using the new Brawler controller. I have it converted to HDMI for my HD CRT. Games look awesome! I don't believe this console was a failure, I think everything around it was.
Dreamcast, the big major console that despite getting it pretty much right with Sega putting so much tremendous effort into it, yet wasn't rewarded for it overall. It goes well with that adage of the Dreamcast not being a failure but society being a failure, everything from coy bitter retailers, to selfish American staff doing dumb things like Bernie stolar cutting the RRP from $249 to $199 (putting all the initial launch strain of manufacturing costs on Sega for every unit sold, instead of spreading it out over their consumer base at just $50 apiece), to disgruntled companies like EA, to doubtful consumers, to dodgy parasitical pirates ripping off the money the Dreamcast did make. And still, the Dreamcast did shatter all previous records at that point on launch, and now in it's post-market phase, it's still looked on more fondly and has a more vibrant post-market scene.
Great video man. The edits, music, humor, writting, the whole package is great. I feel like I stumbled onto something special with this channel. Keep it up!
Some would say that you did stumble into something... I dunno about special, but definitely something, lol🤪 In all seriousness though, thanks, I really appreciate it, and I have new, more frequent, content coming real soon. Thanks for watching!!
Seeing Soul Calibur on a console in 99 was just unbelievable. It was really the first time a company could say a home console game was arcade quality if not better. To me that's the day arcades died in the west.
I still have my Dreamcast in pristine condition in its original box. Keyboard, light gun and most of the games on this list. I know it’s valuable to collectors but I don’t know if I could ever part with it. It was just special.
The dream cast was a really good and innovative system. I got my first taste of online multi-player on it because I wasn't a pc gamer back then. I had my first taste of FPS with UNREAL TOURNAMENT which was FRIGGIN AMAZING & so much fun!! I also played my first NBA 2k on dreamcast. It had a online as well with an option to play 2 on 2 up to 5 on 5 Street ball. Me and friends ended up playing 3 other dudes who were older every weekend. We would play with the current Allstars & they used the 80s players. It was so much fun. Iverson, McGrady & garnett vs Dr j Isiah Thomas & I can't remember the third. It also had a web browser disc that came with the system. It had RE Code Veronica. Can't forget SHENMUE the first open world game I remember playing. I'm sure I'm forgetting alot. Dreamcast should have lasted but Sega had lost all confidence. Really sucked
Whats rarely mentioned and probably a bit more obscure is that Sega was going to flop before the launch all together and its only because one of their execs gave the company 650 million of his stock and then forgave Sega of the loan before he died
Very true, and something I had in my original script, but seeing as how it was more a detail about Sega as a whole, and less specific to the Dreamcast itself (and I needed to cut some content for time), I decided to cut it. It is a fact though that without Isao Okawa giving Sega $500M, and subsequently forgiving said loan and returning his $695M in stock, Sega not only would have gone out of the console business, but business altogether! Thanks for watching!!
@@liamconverse8950 True, yet SEGA had developed 5-6 different accelerator cards for the system, including one or two that would plug into the back. Unlike the more expensive Genesis addons, these would only cost $35-60, and the last one would've made the Saturn as potent as the Dreamcast itself, more than a year before the DC launch. The result would've been that hundreds of millions of dollars in existing Saturn inventory would've been bought by customers excited about the DC addon. This was widely discussed both inside and outside of SEGA, but... typical 90s SEGA. Half the cost of the DC was replacing parts like the CD-ROM, controllers, power supply, etc, that the Saturn already had.
I was 19 and although I lived in another city and worked in construction, my Mom made me send her my credit card statements because she didn't want me to buy useless things. I was from a Korean family. She controlled a lot of my life, unfortunately, and as the oldest I had to look after her. I told her she was interfering, but like I said I had to take care of her. When she past 21 years later, I was free and from the $250K life insurance I received $110K after dividing between my two siblings and I got a little more. I immediately went to Fry's and bought a Dreamcast! It was and still is my first and favorite console! I'm 62 now and plan to give it to my granddaughter when she turns 7.
You will be gifting your granddaughter the greatest grandparent gift ever😁 You are also infanetly cooler than any of my grandparents were, lol. Thanks for watching!!
The VMU was really cool, but it also made the Dreamcast version of Tony Hawk unacceptable in my household 😂. My mom thought cuss words were evil and a certain trick had the word "bitchin" show up on the screen.
Damn, first time I've heard of somebody not being able to play a game because of the VMU! The fact that you couldn't play Tony Hawk in the dreamcasts' heyday is criminal, lol😜 Thanks for watching!!
My Parents were the same, but at 8-9 I managed to sneak a rated R VHS movie in the house my friend let me borrow (Scream 1), so how did your parents even know to look at the VMU or suspect a Skateboarding game had a cuss word? 🤔.
@@Gatorade69I bought my Dreamcast in 2015, and I didn't know that the VMU was the memory card. I got to the checkout at the store and saw a VMU on the shelf, so I thought "That's another cool accessory, I should buy that too and see what it does." That was a life saving thought lol.
Working on the Sega Dreamcast's indie development kit, KallistiOS, right now as I watch this... Dreamcast never died. We're still making games for it to this day, with an extremely modern, capable development kit with a modern toolchain including C++23. I'm even a member of the VMU homebrew scene, and that little shit never died either. Just figured out something new about an unused buzzer mode literally TODAY with an assembly programming rockstar who is composing music for the little thing. Last week we discovered it can run at over 5x the clock rate it was advertised to run at in standalone mode by enabling the clock that gets activated when it plugs into the Dreamcast... lots of crazy homebrew potential.
Yep! I'm surprised he didn't mention the massive homebrew community, as they continue to push the Dreamcast to do even more impressive things than it already can do.
@FalcoGirgis Thats awesome!! The VMU stuff sounds really cool and full of potential. I have quite a few homebrew titles on my ODE moded DC and there's some truly awesome original titles coming from the community😀 Thanks for watching!!
@supersanic1254 I absolutely agree that the homebrew scene for the Dreamcast, both hardware and software, is alive and well... that's why I mentioned it at 20:16 at the end of "The Fall" section of the video😀 Perhaps you missed it... granted, I didn't dive deep into the subject, but it is there. Thanks for watching!!
The Sega Dreamcast pushed all my right buttons. It was my first Sega console and I loved it! Every week I went to EBgames to pick up something new. I still have my system and games along with a second console because Seaman told me to!!
Great video and editing! Really like the style you have going on and I can easily see your channel becoming very successful! I subscribed and I wish you good luck on future videos! I wish we could get a Dreamcast 2 ;_;
The Dreamcast became the first Sega console I ever owned(I was a Nintendo and Pokemon fanboy back in the day) that I got for Christmas of 1999 when I was 9 years old. Didn't get a Genesis/Mega-Drive until my late High School years after watching some early AVGN episodes of Genesis games back in the day. Good times, good times!
I was 19 in 1999 and got a dreamcast because I was interested in online gaming and because of street fighter 3. I had An Atari 7800, nes, snes, genesis, turbo grafx-16, nintendo 64, and ps2. My all time favorite systems are nes, snes, and tg-16.
My all time fav console. It totally blew me away when I first fired up sonic adventure (killer whale section). I was only used to ps1 graphics at the time. It was the first console I ever bought with my own money I had earned from my first proper job aswell. I still regularly play my dreamcast now.
@retrojakexy I think owning the dreamcast was the reason I wasn't all that blown away by the ps2 lol not cus it was bad but because I'd seen amazing graphics on the dreamcast first.
I wouldn't call the Dreamcast a failure at all. Sega made games for it all the way up until 2007 or 2008, Floigan Brothers had DLC released a couple years ago, making it the oldest console game to get DLC. Heck, you can still play most, if not all of Dreamcast's online titles online still to this day. Plus, Dreamcast ports of games like MVC2 are still the definitive versions, despite the game being rereleased on later consoles. All of this is very impressive, the only way Dreamcast "failed" is sales numbers.
In my mind the Dreamcast isn't a failure; I loved/love it till this day and play it frequently. But... it was discontinued early, wasn't overall finically successful, and as much as I love it, and prefer it, it got it's ever living ass kicked by the PS2, lol! I suppose we could say that it was less of situation of the Dreamcast failing, and more one of Sega as a company failing😜 Thanks for watching!!
This is true, the Sega Dreamcast actually technically outlasted its competitors outside of America. Even the Sega Saturn beat the Nintendo 64 in Asia especially and was ahead of the PlayStation for most of the time it was still market viable up till 1997 when Square launched Final Fantasy VII on it (Sega's answer was the excellent Panzer Dragoon Saga which today remains one of the greatest videogames ever produced to date), but by 1997, Sega had already internally moved onto Dreamcast development, while the Yanks in America like Bernie Stolar were trying to phase the Saturn out (one of the worst things they did in hindsight). Even the Sega Master System holds the accolade as being the longest produced home console ever on record thanks to the Sega-Tectoy official licence, making the Master System technically the longest running home console in the world.
Dude I really liked this one. Got a bit of a shock when I looked at your sub count, save to say you've earned one! I would however tone down the memes and gifs a bit, it's somewhat distracting :)
@@GrindOnTime Haha yeah that's probably it - the memes are late 2000s-era though, it's tonally confusing. I don't know which generation is being targeted here.
It was absolutely one of the greatest, but the 360 generation (7th gen) definitely gave it a run for its money, especially in the first half😁 Thanks for watching!!
Top tier quality video, you deserve so many more subscribers man. Jet Set Radio art style makes it look so timeless. If I didn't know about it and someone told me it was a new game I'd believe it.
Thanks, I really appreciate that😁 JSR is a beautiful game, and I 100% agree that it could pass for a modern game. In fact, playing it on my mooded HDMI enabled DC it looks like a modern game with how it cleans up the muddy av visuals. Thanks for watching!!
Just came across this video. It's so good I expected you to have millions of subscribers. Feel lucky to have found your channel. I'm sure I'm one of many who are going to quickly discover your awesome work!
By the time Dreamcast came out, my house had switched over to Playstation. But only because, and I still remember, a guy my dad worked with at that time had bought a PS1. We weren't rich by any means and we were still using Sega Genesis at that time. But my point is that Sony, by then, had completely taken the console market by storm, and following the disaster that was the Saturn, Sega never recovered. Even though rival Nintendo was still using cartridges in their N64. With the launch of the PS2 and Microsoft entering the console market with the Xbox, plus Nintendo finally coming out with a disc console (Gamecube), Sega simply couldn't compete and bowed out of consoles.
It would have been an uphill battle, but if Sega could have included a DVD drive, secured more 3rd party support, and, most importantly, stop all the company infighting, they could have actually had a chance. I guess it wasn't meant to be though, but at least we're still getting Sega games now instead of them just going away all together. Thanks for watching!!
I started with the Sega Genesis in 95. Never owned a Dreamcast, got to play on one a few times. I remember wanting a dreamcast as a kid JUST to play Sonic Adventure 1 and 2! I was soooo obsessed!! Thank Arceus they came out for Gamecube a little later lol
That's why, in my opinion, it's a great shame that those ports sucked, because they were way more accessible. Well, that's what PkR is for I guess. And hey, DC Conversion is spectacular.
Fantastic video by the way! Loved it. Thanks from the homebrew scene for doing it justice! I'm a UA-camr with a 10k subscriber count from a series that is way less produced and is of way lower quality than this has been. I actually thought you were someone really big already based on how well-done this was. You're definitely going places. lol.
i still have my dreamcast box from eb gameworld with the $49.99 price tag , i remember all the games were being sold for like $5-15 new at the stores when it was discontinued , i once owned nearly 100 dreamcast games , loved the system , i recently bought an authentic dreamcast console shell to build a mini itx system in it and throw redream on it in honor of original
I just bought a dreamcast from my local game store. I bought it mainly for nostalgia since my cousin had one from Japan which I dug the sonic game mainly (being probably 8 7-8 at the time. 1998?) Glad to see all those cool titles at the end and that sword of the Berserk was mentioned! Can't wait to grow the collection but for now I bought Shadow Man which looks like kinda and is made by the same company as Turok 2, as well as the Tokyo Racing (or something like that). Thank you for the great breakdown and overview of the history of the console and the games.
I remember Shadow Man being pretty good, not amazing, but pretty good, and Tokyo Xtreme Racer (TXR) 1 & 2 are pretty unique awesome games... I kinda wish I had included them on this list😆 Have fun collecting for this awesome little white box; the games aren't getting any cheaper, but there's some great ones out there. Thanks for watching!!
Thanks, I'm happy you enjoyed it! I've never played Timestalkers, but I've heard good things about it... I think I may need to check it out😁 Thanks for watching!!
The real irony must be that, thanks to the ease of circumventing the Dreamcast's piracy protection, making homebrew stuff and testing on real hardware is super easy. I remember that it sold for around 700 BRL in 1999-2000 (~360 USD) down here in Brazil, which was super expensive (minimum wage was 151BRL). I don't even know if that price was gray market or an official release, as TecToy did officially release all previous Sega consoles, including the ill fated Saturn. Executive meddling, mismanagement and rivalry between America and Japan have always caused severe problems, even during its Mega Drive/Genesis peak. That the company found some success despite all that is a real miracle, I'd say.
Yes! The homebrew scene on the DC is second to none on consoles, with only the Jaguar coming anywhere near it. You make a really good point concerning all the internal strife and the Genesis/Mega Drive era... imagine how big Sega could have been had they gotten it together during THAT gen!! Thanks for watching!!
Great video! I remember reading about Dreamcast launch in 99 or so. I had a PS1 and ultimately decided to wait for the PS2 for backward compatibility for my favorite PS1 games and PlayStation reputation (tons of titles, long running systems). I also remembered my friends older brothers issues with Saturn. Thought then and still think now Dreamcast was a compelling system.. unfortunate how things went down.
Eventhough i prefer the Dreamcast, I get going with the PS2 at the time; it had A LOT going for it, and Sega had really dropped the ball the previous generation. But the Dreamcast did so much that was interesting and new, it truly was ahead of its time. Thanks for watching!!
The best we can hope for is a Dreamcast mini, or a Saturn mini... which even though I own both of those consoles I'd buy those minis in a heartbeat!! As far as a new original console from Sega? Keep the dream alive man, but no... never gonna happen... we can DREAM THOUGH🤪 Thanks for watching!!
SEGA may have left the console market, but it achieved it's primal goal with the Dreamcast. To finally bring arcade quality games in your household. When it's spine was broken from the PS2, I was pissed at Sony for competition killing. But it turned out to be a respected competitor, along with the Xbox (Dreamcast 2) & the GameCube, which made this 6th gaming generation by far, the best generation. This is when I stopped moving forward to continuing my gaming experience, cause the games ever since, became playable movies that you direct.
This Yank myth needs to die, the Xbox was never Dreamcast 2. The closest there was to a Dreamcast 2 was codenamed 'Receivership' internally within Sega in Europe/Asia. The Xbox was a Yank made console by Yank company Microsoft, and they were able to do that after learning the industry by supplying Sega with a custom version of Windows (hence the small 'Microsoft Windows CE' logo on the front right corner of the Dreamcast to the far side of the large SEGA logo on the front), Microsoft did that as their trojan horse, it was a way Microsoft could work undercover and learn how the gaming industry worked internally and gather intel and insight for their own future ambition.
They did achieve that, but I sure do wish they had kept on achieving it, lol😆 While I do think 6th gen was great, I gotta say, the 7th gen (360 era) was pretty damn great too imo. Now after that... well, things definitely got... different. Thanks for watching!!
This rambling comment is brought to you by holiday weekend sleep deprivation. Dreamcast wasn't my first preorder (Nintendo 64 won that title), but it was the first I actually waited in line for at launch (Toys R Us called to tell me to come pick up my N64 a week ahead of street date, so that one was a complete surprise). Waited outside the mall on that cool September night for the midnight launch. They let me pick up my preorder for Final Fantasy VIII shortly before closing, so I spent a good three hours in line just reading the manual over and over. SoulCalibur and official VMUs were sold out by the time I made it to the register, but I went home with Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Hydro Thunder, a third-party memory card in lieu of a VMU, and I decided at the last second to spend the money I had allocated for SoulCalibur on Tokyo Xtreme Racer in its absence. I played Sonic Adventure first of course, and then Power Stone and Hydro Thunder. I don't think I actually played Tokyo Xtreme Racer before I went to bed, but I definitely played it the entirety of the following night. I lost all track of time just running laps around the C1, grinding up a garage to take on faster and faster opponents. It's such a simple game, but even after acquiring SoulCalibur several weeks later, TXR remains unironically my favorite launch title, and a game I still play today. Dreamcast is and forever will be my favorite console of all time. Dreamcast games have a way of standing out as Dreamcast games in the most endearing way; even if you've never heard of a particular game, you can just tell that it's a Dreamcast game by looking at it. I can feel nostalgia for a game I've never played before just because of that. After suffering through the warping and jittery proto-3D games of Saturn and PlayStation, I finally had something at home that didn't just look as smooth and solid as the arcade Daytona USA and Ridge Racer, it looked better. I get warm fuzzies every time I turn one on. Maybe less so if there's a VMU with a dead battery plugged in at the time, but you get what I mean. I married the first person I played Chu Chu Rocket with. Skies of Arcadia is unquestionably my favorite game for the console, but I must admit that I more frequently play its updated port on Gamecube. The Gamecube version may have worse audio (and some worse visuals in some spots), but the additions (and less frustrating encounter rate) really make up for it. I do go back to the Dreamcast version every so often though, just to treat myself to the proper music. If there's any Dreamcast game I'd like to see a remaster of, it's Skies of Arcadia.
TXR was more awesome than it had any right to be, and I game I regret not speaking more about in this video! It was a very unique game at the time, and I sunk more time into it than I ever thought I would. The Gamecube version of SoA isn't bad by any means, and I totally agree that the improved encounter rate is actually better. The other additions are fine, though not worth the "upgrade", but the encounter rate is a great improvement😁 Thanks for watching!!
Great vid, I imported mine from the states with 3 games a light gun, extra controller and 2 vmu's and it arrived before the local NZ release and cheaper than the price of just the console had I purchased it locally. The PS2 hype train with it's emotion engine and toy story quality graphics was well under way by the time it was released here. I didn't know anyone else that had one at the time and I wouldn't be surprised if those 13 sales was NZ's total sold.
Man, you guys really got the shaft pricing wise with the Dreamcast... in fact, as I do research for these videos, especially the one I'm working on right now, you guys seem to get the shaft on ALL of the consoles pricing wise!! The DC was fighting an uphill battle against the PS2 already, but add the ridiculous pricing of the AU and NZ market and it lost before it even launched. Pretty sad, but I'm happy that you were able to get one and experience it's awesomeness during its, limited, heyday😁 Thanks for watching!!

Great video! One note: Windows CE was only used in a handful of games at most. It was more of a marketing and money-making advertising ploy on the part of SEGA and Microsoft. I also feel like they wasted a ton of money, time, and effort on the virtually useless VMU devices.
Thanks, I really appreciate that😄 I agree that they did waste money on the VMU, but the idea, and even the actual hardware itself, was cool, but hardly any developers utilized it making it more or less useless. But it could have been awesome! Thanks for watching!!
Great video. my friends older brother had a dreamcast and would play power stone and MVC2 all the time. Didn't know about the EA licensing. Yeah a lot of people won't buy a console if they couldn't get madden or NBA live back in the day.
I will always say play on original hardware if possible, though if emulation is the only option then that's fine, though I will agree that the Dreamcast (along with the Jaguar and the Wii) is one of the few consoles that the original hardware experience is far better than emulation in most cases😁 Thanks for watching!!
The Dreamcast was the first console that brought arcade like-graphics in the home, without having to spend endless money in the arcades. That meant a lot to me.
@@retrojakexy 😃 Hey! If true, then i understand why that meant a lot to me... As a kid, rarely someone would gave you the money you needed to truly 'enjoy' the game. (as it's in an racade's nature, to lose) So actually, as a kid, looking at arcade machines game's graphics whas like looking at a different form of currency. Where to get the currency as a kid? The Dreamcast's arrival, was that currency. You even didn't have to put a coin trough the wall at home. I could just press start, forever... That must be the reason the Dreamcast meant a lot to me, but i'm not sure. There could be thousands of reasons... If this would happen to a lot of people at the same time globally, then it MUST be the reason, the Dreamcast is responsible for the death of the arcades. If true, then the death of the arcades, was just the consequent of it's release. So no, there is no blame. In this scenario, if the arcades already started dying, then the Dreamcast, was the virtual headshot to that industry. 🤏😎
The true history of the Dreamcast is this: SEGA messed up during the Mega Drive later years and tried pushing extra hardware such as the Sega CD and 32X, both which were better left on paper alone and instead, they should have focused from as early as 1992 on the true next generation, being the Saturn. Had they made their home work and released the console in late 1994 with 30 great launch titles across all genres, with over a year of development each, and a good Sonic game among them, then ensuring Namco, Square, Enix, Konami exclusive contracts and all arcade hits on their platform. Specially closing a smart deal when Sony approached then a good while before they decided to go alone and make their own console, the Dreamcast would have been launched in 2001 or even 2002, with a more powerful hardware, solid third party support and possibly a decent controller. The Dreamcast was literally rushed to the market and was, before anything, SEGA's desperation materialized as a product. Nintendo screwed up so bad with their decisions regarding the N64, they lost 95% of their third party support from their previous giants, the NES and specially the SNES, which was the king of RPGs and all genres across the board. The N64 lost even to the Saturn by a large margin, but you know why the N64 managed to sell over 32 million units? Nintendo did what SEGAdidn't, they actually supported the machine up to 2001, even considered a dead horse compared to their competition, they just kept the machine going, while the Saturn was abandoned at the end of 97. It comes to show how SEGA was arrogant to the breaking point, the CEO which led the Genesis to the top charts, Kalinske said himself that by SEGA ignoring Sony's partnership with the upcoming 32-bit machine is one, if not the greatest fiasco in the business as a whole. You see, the Dreamcast couldn't even keep up with the Playstation original, a console released at the same time as the Saturn, the PS1 received sequels and new games way up after the Dreamcast discontinuation, and I mean hundreds of titles, specially if we include many Japan-only releases. If the Dreamcast is nostalgic to someone, we still can't ignore what actually happened, and we should consider what could have happened if SEGA followed Nintendo's steps, they saw SEGA releasing addons in the early 90's and they knew just by observing that wasn't the way and by keeping up the then N64 dead horse going, they succeeded and are still on the market today. The Master System, the Saturn and the Dreamcast never reached their true potential. And if you're familiar with the homebrew efforts, the Genesis could even receive great ports of much heavier arcade games such as Street Fighter Alpha 2 and King of Fighters '98.
I agree, though one of the reasons Sega wasn't able to continue on with the Dreamcast while Nintendo could with the N64 was that Sega just didn't have the money. Had they pushed on with the Dreamcast, and not "cut there losses" there's a really good chance they wouldn't be around today. Sega was too impatient and had too much conflict within the company to get there shit together and got let behind. It's sad, but true;) Thanks for watching!!
Yes, I agree there, Nintendo had more money, but SEGA was king of the arcades since the mid 80's, basically unrivaled in terms of innovation and high-end hardware. Nintendo lost a huge chunk of their income in the 32 and 128 bit eras, but they didn't suffer from internal mismanagement. Companies need to respect their costumers and those who bought the N64 had new software until 2001. If SEGA didn't drop the 32-bit ball and supported the Saturn they would have surpassed the N64, a solid second place. Let's also consider that what makes a console is the amount of great games and continuation of recognizable franchises it gets, and since Sony's machine didn't have an ego back then and it was cheaper to release software on, the then two giants basically gave Sony what they needed to succeed. Sony didn't have a clue the PS1 would get half the the recognition and success it did, it was a lucky first hit, over 100mi units sold. It's all about good games, in the end. My brothers and I chose the Saturn and we love the console, but I clearly remember in 1998 how things were barely being released for the console, when I first saw the Dreamcast, SEGA had lost its identity in many forms, I didn't know this back then, but looking back, it makes sense. My older brother bought and Xbox and my other two brothers a PS2 each, SEGA was no more.
@@retrojakexy It’s because Sega was at war with itself. Sega Japan and Sega USA couldn’t agree on much. So they imploded and almost couldn’t be saved 🤷🏻
@@roberto1519Sega still would have lost to the N64 unless they released the most of the Japanese library of games then maybe it would have surpassed the N64 but your dismissing of the PlayStation’s success is lucky harsh because the reason the PlayStation was so successful was because Sony got the basics right it was easy to develop for, it was cheaper and as you said, Sony didn’t have an ego. So the PlayStation’s success was as not lucky, it was deserved and I choose PlayStation back then and have no regrets but I do wish I had a Saturn alongside my PlayStation.
Yeah... lol🤪 All joking aside, even though it technically failed, it still gets supported till this day, so it's future is brighter then a lot of old consoles. Thanks for watching!!
I knew that some areas, such as Brazil I think, didn't get the modem, but I didn't know that some regions got a 33k version; thanks for the info😁 Thanks for watching!!
Silent Hill, Resdient Evil, Tomb Raider, Ace Combat, FF7, Gran Turismo, GTA, and Metal Gear Solid are why SEGA collapsed in the marketplace. Most of the SEGA games could be beaten in 1-2 hours.
Partially yes, but the reason Sega's consoles didn't have some of those games (some of them they actually did have) was due to the absolutely terrible management in place and the really bad decisions they were making. Thanks for watching!!
@retrojakexy And a handful of developers that had poured money into the Sega CD, and then the 32X or even the Nomad suddenly had the rug pulled out from under them... by SEGA. If you didn't leave the sinking ship, the ship pulled you down with them. Whereas SONY did everything it could to help its group of developers become very successful.
Live by the arcade, die with the arcade. It wasn't just them, look at what was happening to other arcade focused studios at the time, the changing tastes of gamers to want grander experiences for their money wiped or nearly wiped them all out. The only difference was Sega had a mass market console which made it more public.
@ericp631 Sega of Japan related more hardware from 1986-1999 than any other console. They had one major success: the 22 million Genesis consoles sold in North America by the Kalinske Team--compared with 21 million PS1's. The SMS was also a modest success in Latin America and Europe, also partially thanks to the Kalinske Team.
The inclusion of a DVD player in the PS2 was one of the smartest moves Sony ever made... unfortunately for the Dreamcast though. Think how things would be different today had Sega included one though... things could be totally different🤔 Thanks for watching!!
Definitely should have worked that into their marketing: "The Dreamcast is so amazing you'll feel like your high"! Don't do drugs kids, do Dreamcast! Lol🤪 Thanks for watching!!
4x4 EVO should’ve been on the honorable mentions!! It was like a cheaper Gran Turismo but with off-road SUVs and racing trucks!! It was super fun though, but had some of the worst rubberbanding AI..
There's tons of great games on the Dreamcast, unfortunately i only had so much time. Admittedly, I never played 4x4 Evo, but I do have a modded Dreamcast with all the games, so I'll give it a go😁 Thanks for watching!!
2:54 Only outside of Japan did games stop being released. The Sega Saturn still saw software support well into the Dreamcast's lifespan in Japan. Did you know that the Sega Saturn also outsold the legendary Nintendo 64 in Japan?
I agree, but the PS2 was a juggernaut that pretty much nobody could stand up to... not necessarily in quality (that's subjective) but in pure hype and popularity it just couldn't be matched. Thanks for watching!!
13 units sold nationwide in Australia? I got one release day 9/9/99 for $499, and convinced 2 of my mates to get one release day as well. So we would account for 3/13 sales? That’s crazy if it’s true
Well yes, and no🤔 Two major Australian retailers reported that combined across all of their stores nationwide only 13 units were sold. Which means other units could, and I'm sure we're, sold in the country, but either way, only 13 units across two companies nationwide on release week isn't good, lol. Thanks for watching!!
You bought one at $499 on 9/9/99? Sounds like you bought an import then, because it didn't launch in Australia until the 30th of November 1999, after two delays. It wasn't measured by Sega themselves so we don't really know what the exact end result was, we only have the launch inventory from retailers, but the reason Sega didn't measure it in Australia at launch is because again they outsourced it to another company, just like they did with Grandstand for the SG-1000 (early 1st form Master System), and Tonka in America for the Master System. In Australia the Dreamcast was handled by Ozisoft rather than Sega directly themselves, like in Asia, Europe (Eurasia) and even North America this time. Though I do remember reading from the UK (Scotland (Northern Great Britain)) about how bad the Australian situation and reception was, one UK publication I still have stated it was due to it being heavily delayed several times at first once after the other and then massive shortages of units being distributed when it did arrive, that along with the higher price and limited software stock, Internet compatibility and launch game availability, then delayed again for various reasons. In short, it was a bit of a mess overall in hindsight to put it lightly, and that as well as only six of the thirty planned launch games were available for purchase on day one - and none of them were even first-party Sega software. Apparently it was Steve O'Leary who represented Ozisoft, and he did explain the situation at launch by saying that it was because of the Australian Customs Service impounding all the supplied launch software, including demo discs, because they didn't bother to label their country of origin; Ozisoft had received them just two days before the launch day, which also meant only a few games that were catalogued and prepared for shipment in time were available on day one. But O'Leary of Ozisoft did also say that the Dreamcast's high demand in other markets had reduced the number of peripherals allotted to the Australian region as well, so it is a testament also of how well the Dreamcast was doing everywhere else - and it's important to acknowledge that because New Zealand counted as the same market as Australia and was handled in that territory by Ozisoft as well, and even though Ozisoft just operated these territories, they were still using PAL varients of the Dreamcast (the UK and European version with the Blue Swirl logo), and the blue Swirl PAL Dreamcast version was not assigned to just one nation like the red swirl US NTSC version was, so that meant much more blue swirl PAL Dreamcasts were needed for all the UK nations of Britain and all these European nations (which has double the population of the USA), so naturally, this would also affect the available stock for Australia and New Zealand too. But again, the better the Dreamcast did in PAL territories, the worse the launch in Australia was inevitably going to be because it would also mean less availability in time for the big day. It was a big ask for the average Australian to invest, though of course the most loyal Sega die hard veterans would buy it no matter what of course, though obviously it would eventually do much better than just 13 units, but that was the launch day, and the launch makes an important first impression to a degree, so it's fair to say for the Dreamcast that as good as it did elsewhere at launch, it was not a good start in Australia.
F355 Challenge was really cool, but also REALLY hard due to its hard-core realistic controls! While the DC version was a great game, the arcade version, with its three screen setup, was an awesome experience where the realistic controls worked really well😁 Thanks for watching!!
Basically it comes down to 2 core issues. Sega were loosing money on every console sold (nothing new) but they weren’t making money on the software because it was easy to bypass the security verification and Sega launched at the height of worldwide broadband rollout, which meant pretty much everyone was using Napster to download music, movie and games. Also Sega failed to pivot towards as being an household entertainment device hence why PS2 sold so well, and both Sega Dreamcast and Gamecube didn’t do well with casual gamers. I know 4 female friends who’ve bought the PS2 and then PS3 to use it as a DVD/Blu Ray player. I don’t think the console would have survived with these 2 core issues even if it had the support from EA, Square or Konami. All the games would have just been copied for free.
The ramped piracy on the Dreamcast was definitely a big problem, and didn't help, but the absence of a DVD player while it's main competitor had one was the nail in the coffin😟 Thanks for watching!!
I remember the Dreamcast controller the most as a kid and thinking that it looked weird. It wasn't until I saw a Adam Koralik video on the Dreamcast back in 2016 that got me into collecting for it and I had a bunch of games, but due to some financial problem I had to sell most of them I still have the heavy hitters though. Anyways I grew to love the console and it's games I even still have the rare controllers before they gotten more expensive. It just something in my game collection that I hold dear and it's a shame that Sega couldn't stick around in the console market.
I had to sell my original collection too years ago... I hate it, but you gotta do what you gotta do to survive. It's good that you were able to hang on to some of it though😀 The Dreamcast really is a special little console. Thanks for watching!!
SSX was the game that you saw everywhere when the PS2 launched, and the SSX brand was huge for a while, but then a few years later it just stopped! SSX Tricky was my favorite entry personally🤪 Thanks for watching!!
I think the DC version looked a bit better and ran smoother, but overall the same, awesome, experiance. Soul Reaver was SO good!! Thanks for watching!!
Love the your video, forgot to point another reason for dreamcasts downfall with how easy it was to pirate dreamcast games while ps2 came out with their blu ray system to stop that from happening 😂 I had all the games you mentioned but bootleg version with the boot disk, high school was madness.😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah I touched on that with how supporting the MIL cd format was the backdoor pirates needed, and once that was discovered the free games flowed!! It's funny that they went with GD ROM in an attempt to combat piracy, and it ultimately was what made it so easy to pirate games on😂 Thanks for watching!!
Damn! Hasn't worked in 20 years! Just curious, what's wrong with it? Bad laser, power supply, etc? Most DC issues can be fixed fairly cheep with all the great mods out there😁 Thanks for watching!!
@@retrojakexy my friends sister spilled milk in it and the drive never worked again. I got a ps2 right after that but the reason I never cared to fix it is because the controller makes my hands hurt. It's what I have to show for a summer of hard work so long ago 😂
I'm assuming your not in the US, because here the Dreamcast was $100 less than the PS2 a year before the PS2 released, lol🤪 Going from the PS1 to the Dreamcast was world changing! Thanks for watching!!
If Sega could have been saved, the Dreamcast was good enough to save it. Unfortunately, due to Sega's many missteps after the Genesis and before the Dreamcast, they lost too much market share and mind share to survive. Stellar launch lineup and really solid hardware, but too many loyal Sega customers had been burned too many times by underwhelming and under supported hardware to trust Sega by the time Dreamcast came out. It's one of my favorite consoles ever that certainly deserved a longer life and more success than it received.
100% agree... the Dreamcast was a fantastic console that had so much going for it, but damn Sega, as much as I love 'em, they couldn't pull there head out of there ass, lol🤪 Thanks for watching!!
I wonder if there is an alternate reality somewhere out there in the cosmos where the Dreamcast survived? If so, I really wish I could open up a hole in reality that linked directly to that one and I would jump in in a heartbeat.. I bet they still go by “right versus wrong“ there??
You left out Cannon Spike, and Project Justice, with its character creator that was a dating sim/board game on the Japanese version. I really miss what Capcom used to do.
Oh I left out a lot of games, lol! Only so much time in the video😜I haven't played Canon Spike, but I do have both that and Project Justice on my moded DC, and Project Justice is pretty cool; I'll give Canon Spike a go. Thanks for watching!!
Did you have a DREAMCAST? What was your favorite game?? If you enjoyed this, hit the Like and Subscribe buttons, and check out my channel for more content like this! Thanks for watching!!
my fav game was actually 3, Soul Calibur, MK Gold, and MvC2
Power Stone 2 and Jet Grind Radio are my favorite Dreamcast games I recently played through the entirety and streamed all of Jet Grind Radio on official Dreamcast hardware in one sitting.
The House of the Dead 2 for me! That was why the DC was the first console I ever bought at launch, with the Gameboy Advance being the next, and only other one), and couldn't wait to play that great game at home in arcade perfect form too!
Sonic Adventure 2 (being a lover of 2D Sonic games it's weird but... Live those days) and PSO, even Online.
@@wesleyswafford2462 And there's still some fan-made homebrew games being released for it as we speak, which you'd love I'm sure too!
"I don't believe this console was a failure, I think everything around it was." I like this😜 Thanks for watching!!
It was definitely the beginning of the end for arcades. Thanks for watching!!
Especially with a VGA adaptor, it looked gorgeous on a CRT computer monitor.
Maybe so, but there is no replacement for a fixed joystick
I still have my Dreamcast in pristine condition in its original box. Keyboard, light gun and most of the games on this list. I know it’s valuable to collectors but I don’t know if I could ever part with it. It was just special.
That's awesome! Never sell it😆 Thanks for watching!!
Glorious!
The dream cast was a really good and innovative system.
I got my first taste of online multi-player on it because I wasn't a pc gamer back then.
I had my first taste of FPS with
UNREAL TOURNAMENT which was FRIGGIN AMAZING & so much fun!!
They really screwed up with Saturn
@@liamconverse8950 that's not the half of it, my dude
@@retrojakexyinteresting

The VMU was bitchin' ... However I never had a VMU so I had to leave my Dreamcast on for days to try to beat Sonic Adventure. It sucked. :(
@@Gatorade69 i suffered the same fate :(
My Parents were the same, but at 8-9 I managed to sneak a rated R VHS movie in the house my friend let me borrow (Scream 1), so how did your parents even know to look at the VMU or suspect a Skateboarding game had a cuss word?

Not surprised dreamcast is the goat!!! Even yu Suzuki dreamcast had twice the power left.
I'm sure all five people interested in buying your game share your enthusiasm, but for the real world Dreamcast is dead.
The Sega Dreamcast pushed all my right buttons. It was my first Sega console and I loved it! Every week I went to EBgames to pick up something new. I still have my system and games along with a second console because Seaman told me to!!

The Dreamcast was awesome, but the Genesis was Sega at their peak and a god tier console;) Thanks for watching!!

The Dreamcast was a true generational leap and seeing it in action for the first time in '99 was mind blowing😄 Thanks for watching!!

Panzer Dragoon Saga is AWESOME!! It's one of my most coveted games in my collection😁
And sales are the most important metric for a company. So yes, the Dreamcast did fail, that doesn't mean it was bad though.
Tokyo Xtreme Racing is my favorite and I still play it now.
TXR 1 & 2 are awesome!! Kinda wish I had included them on the list, 😆 Thanks for watching!!

@@retrojakexy Welcome
Really good video, but I think the use of stock pictures was a bit overboard...
Thanks, i really appreciate that! Don't forget my overuse of garish throwback 80's synth music too, lol🤪 Thanks for watching!!
Somehow all these years later, I still hold out hope that sega will make a new console even though I know its almost impossible that they will.
Sports ball and crazy taxi indeed.
All the sports balls
The Saturn brought arcade quality to the home too.

I just ordered a GDEMU to mod my Dreamcast. I also bought a 27" Sony CRT just to play Dreamcast on as well. Can't wait to play the amazing games!

Dreamcast is the one console you shouldn't use emulators because you will never get the same experience
I will always say play on original hardware if possible, though if emulation is the only option then that's fine, though I will agree that the Dreamcast (along with the Jaguar and the Wii) is one of the few consoles that the original hardware experience is far better than emulation in most cases😁 Thanks for watching!!
I prefer my phone playing on original hardware over emulation, I just don’t get the same joy that playing on real hardware brings me.

The Dreamcast was the first console that brought arcade like-graphics in the home, without having to spend endless money in the arcades.
That meant a lot to me.
That it did! It was the first time I thought to myself "there isn't really any reason for me to go back to an arcade now"🤪 Thanks for watching!!
@@retrojakexy Then maybe the Dreamcast is the reason arcades started dying?
@Purpoit it definitely didn't help🤣 but arcades had already started to burnout by the time it released, so we can't totally blame it, lol
@@retrojakexy 😃 Hey!
If true, then i understand why that meant a lot to me...
As a kid, rarely someone would gave you the money you needed to truly 'enjoy' the game. (as it's in an racade's nature, to lose)
So actually, as a kid, looking at arcade machines game's graphics whas like looking at a different form of currency.
🤏😎
I’m looking for used and cheap Dreamcast games right now lol. Top 3 favorite console of all time
Key word being "cheap" because DC games are going through the roof!! The Dreamcast was, and is, such a great console though😁 Thanks for watching!!
Your editing is legendary man. Great job.
Thanks, I really appreciate that😁 More coming soon. Thanks for watching!!
Tl;dr
@@retrojakexy
It’s because Sega was at war with itself.
Sega Dreamcast's future will be bright, i just know it.
Yeah... lol🤪 All joking aside, even though it technically failed, it still gets supported till this day, so it's future is brighter then a lot of old consoles. Thanks for watching!!
Correction: the 56k modem was only used in North America. All other regions had a 33k modem or no modem at all. Shenmue has Ryo, not Ryu.
That obsolete PS2 DVD player killed the Dreamcast.
The inclusion of a DVD player in the PS2 was one of the smartest moves Sony ever made... unfortunately for the Dreamcast though. Think how things would be different today had Sega included one though... things could be totally different🤔 Thanks for watching!!

F355 Challenge online was the best Dreamcast game for me 😢
F355 Challenge was really cool, but also REALLY hard due to its hard-core realistic controls! While the DC version was a great game, the arcade version, with its three screen setup, was an awesome experience where the realistic controls worked really well😁 Thanks for watching!!
You have great energy
Thanks, I really appreciate that😁 Thanks for watching!!

House of the Dead was worth buying a Dreamcast for alone.
HotD2 was a hell of a game😁 Thanks for watching!!
