- Philip II Of Spain - His Armada Defeated By Elisabeth I Of England : Philip II was born on 21 May 1527 in the Palacio de Pimentel, Valladolid and died on 13 September 1598 in El Escorial near Madrid. He was a Spanish monarch from the Habsburg dynasty.
As the only surviving legitimate son of Charles V, Philip ruled the lands of the Spanish crown after his father's abdication, and from 1580 he also ruled the Kingdom of Portugal in personal union.
Philip II was a devout Catholic and vehemently advocated the Counter-Reformation. He saw himself called upon to enforce Catholicism in the countries he ruled and to forcefully push back the increasingly strong Protestantism through the Spanish Inquisition. This led to ongoing military conflicts with the Netherlands and England, against which he unsuccessfully sent the Armada in 1588.
Philip had the monastic palace Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial built as a representative seat of power.
After a 42-year reign, Philip II died on 13 September 1598.

Charles V's brother succeeded him as Holy Roman Emperor (Ferdinand I) while his son Phillip became King of Spain. Charles had come to realize that it was too much for one person to be both as he had been (especially with the empire being wracked by the Protestant Reformation).
This is right.
Apologies for the inaccuracy.
Charles V owned something like 25% of the earth's land at one point. It must be insane to have that type of power. Especially considering how long he reigned.
yeah I was about to say that. similarly, Archduke Charles would similarly lose support in the war of the Spanish wart of succession after he became HRE. his elder bro Joseph I had suddenly died
The Spanish Armada was never called "the invincible". Its real name was "La grande y felicísima armada" translated into English, "The big and very happy armada". Although "felicisima" in this context refers more to having a good end or fate rather than being happy in the sense of felicity
Thank you for clarifying.
Whether or not it was actually referred to as invincible or not it was certainly thought to be.
@@winnienguyen4420 It's sad that the Iberians, in general, were weaker in terms of financial aptitude compared to the Dutch and British (who were inhumane and destroyed colonialism and anything that had to do with it).
@@winnienguyen4420300 year Spanish empire Vs 100 years England😂😂😂
By the English despectively, not by us. As if we were thinking or expecting too much of it. It was called la gran y felicísima armada, the great and auspicious armada, sort of. The arrogant connotation was given by the English 👀
I love your videos! As I am currently studying this period, and Philip’s role in the political backdrop of early English exploration, I clicked on this instantly! My favourite videos of yours are on Louis XIV and his court as this is my main area of interest. I thought it worth pointing out that Philip II didn’t become Holy Roman Emperor after Charles V died, his brother did; Charles split the Habsburg domains between Philip and his brother Ferdinand before his death, as the combined territories were too large to effectively govern. Please continue with these videos, they are very useful and informative and you have the perfect voice for it!
Apologies for the mistake… i do try to keep them out but sometimes an inaccuracy does slip in… glad you liked the video though !
Considering most of the other Habsburgs, Phillip doesn't look inbred with the huge bottom lip, chin and jaw abnormalities that I see in other paintings of males of the Habsburg line. Phillip was a very interesting monarch, but in my humble opinion his father was even more so and not quite as brutal and overbearing with the whole Inquisition tragedy. Despite still having some faults he was just a better king than his son. I'd say Charles V and Phillip II were probably the most powerful and wealthy Monarchs for their time. It must have been insane to have the kind of power and control over so much of not only Europe, but Southeast Asia and the Americas as well. Especially when Charles V owned such huge swaths of Europe. He really deserves a video about his life for sure.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts Winnie!
What is wrong with inquisitions? Just become a catholic. Oh, and Philip II is hot, not gonna lie.
Great video, as usual!
You're really a gem! Thank you! ❤️
Thank you very much !
I always felt sorry for Mary Tudor. She fell in love with Philip, but he never reciprocated. At 38 and with the bad health she'd suffered all her life, she should have realized it was unlikely she'd bear children. Philip was unpopular, and she could have avoided alienating her people. I knew Philip had had a first wife but didn't realize he'd had two more after Mary -- he's almost as married as Henry VIII (at least he didn't kill any of his wives).
Thank you so much for sharing this additional information with us.
She was clingy and not his type.

She was Mary I not Bloody Mary which we would know if we dug and looked at facts other than propaganda. Some research would highlight her many successes and good qualities. It’s amazing that in 2022 we still barely scratch the surface and fall for the incredibly effective Elizabethan PR machine. Who needs social media, when something from 500 years ago is still so effective :)
@@Chipoo88 100% agree why don't we call Elizabeth bloody, she killed a lot of people, had slaves and mistreated her servants, she also had a terrible temper.

Another beautiful story. This is the first time I've heard Philip's side. Thanks so much for sharing 😊 😀
Thank you for watching !
An excellent account of Philip II's reign. It's interesting to imagine how different British history would have been had Mary I survived for longer and given birth to a son. England would have become Catholic, presumably with this being enforced by the Inquisition. Their son would eventually have been king of Spain, Portugal, England and what is now Belgium. The Union with Scotland would never have happened. North America would have been colonised by this 'triple power', with only the French and Dutch as rivals. Would the Netherlands have even survived without the support of a protestant England? Given that this Catholic King would have had the might of the Hapsburg armies under his command, would he or his son have won the English Civil War?
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us !!!
The inquisition was a tribunal implanted by the Spanish Crown, to judge the faith sins. It was token from France, with the difference that in Spain every people should have a judgment before being declared guilty. This Inquisition, was done particularly to ger a moral difference between the barbarian protestant Witch hunting, where Any woman was burned Alive if anybody said se was a Witch. And well, there IS no more barbaric society than the medieval English.
North América was colonized by Spain during 300 years. The 80% of what IS today U.S.A was spanish land 300 years, apart of México that IS Also North América. Even with that the 13 colonies were colonized by England and New York was originally colonized by Netherlands. Phillip II was Also King of Netherlands, Netherlands was under Spanish Crown.

His Armada defeated by a storm. Was Worst the army sent by England to Spain a few years later, bigger and defeated by a woman in La Coruña, María Pita.
Thank you for watching and commenting !
This is somthing that is always missing from videos about Philip II. Elizabeth I send her favorite pirate, Sir Francis Drake to try to take Portugal and La Coruña and fail. No storms here. Only incompetence.
Philip II recognized the loyalty of a Timucuan Chief, Dona Maria in Saint Augustine, La Florida in one of his letters. She kept the peace between Spanish colonists & the Indigenous people. Merci 🌸 ❤️!
Good point. It was Philip's almirante y adelantado Pedro Menéndez de Avilés who founded the first settlement in the present United States.
Thanks for sharing that information with us Christine !
He is said to have stated in regards of his son's incompetence...
*"God, who has given me so many kingdoms, has denied me a son capable of ruling them"* (referring to his two heirs Don Carlos and Felipe III)
I don't know if he actually said this but it is known he was very concerned with his son's lack of interest in politics

Poor Spain never really recovered their greatness after losing the Armada. I love the clothes the Spanish wore. All that black and gold. I wish more of it had survived.
Thank you for watching Eric !
You what? The Spanish Empire still grew in power for many a year and its navy grew larger while the English one didnt recover from the "English Armada" and the London Treaty of 1604 shows how England excepted all of the Spanish terms for peace.
Wjat do you mean spain had the largest empire in the world for 250 years it wasnt until 1812 when spain lost its true power but definately spains peak of power was the whole 16th century and half of the 17th century
The Portuguese continued his moral value better than the Spanish.
And stop with this attitude, English. War isn't over until everyone is dead. Remember, countries like India and China are out to make sure you go extinct.
I thought he only became king of Spain while Charles V's brother Ferdinand became Emperor
Yes. I still need to add the correction. Ty for watching.
he was king of Naples, Sicily, + duke of Burgundy
Interesting video. Previously, I thought of Philip II as a one-dimensional person, however, it seems that there is more to him. Thank you. Kind Regards, Cherie
Definitely !
Thanks for the lovely video 😊
I'd have small correction there at 4:15 Philip II did not become Emperor. His Father Charles V abticated the throne in 1556 and made his brother Ferdiand I Holy Roman Emperor (therefore creating a junior line of Habsburgs with Ferdinand, HRE as head of the new Austrian Habsburg-Dynasty).
He only left Philip his Spanish and Dutch titles, making him head of the senior Spanish Habsburg-Dynasty)
P.S. Will you make a Video about Queen Mary I of England?
No, I don’t think I will. There are already quite a lot of channels who cover the Tudors, not sure if people are really waiting for another channel doing them.
Thanks for the heads up… i was misinformed, i apologize.

@@TheKingsofFrance that would be great!
I wonder how things would have been different if Philip and Mary had a son. Would the son rule England and Spain or have to pick one?
Good question... Not sure how that would've played out.
He already had a living heir from his previous marriage to María Manuela of Portugal, Don Carlos; who was to rule Spain and its American viceroyalties, African possessions and Asian colonies and has a claim to the Portuguese Empire too. The Spanish Habsburgs were the senior branch of the House of Habsburg and the King of Spain was the head of the House therefore, any children resulting from the marriage with Mary I, would be a secondary branch of the main branch meaning that an English Habsburg would still have precedence (dynastically speaking) over any Austrian Habsburg. Why is this important?: in the event that Philip and Mary had children and Don Carlos died before ruling and without issue, the heir to the English crown was forbade to rule over the Spanish Empire, only in England as per the marriage treaty signed between Philip and Mary so the second son in line would inherit the Spanish throne. This would have mean that the English Habsburgs would have become the senior branch of the house while the King of Spain would have retained his status as head of the House. The powers combined of Spain, England, Portugal (as Philip was going to anex it anyways just as he did) and Austria, would have created a power we have never seen, eventually Spain and England would merge as the Spanish constitution would have allowed such move and Spain was the main power back then and they would of have literally conquered the entire planet. If there was no second son but a woman, Spanish constitution allows women to rule so a Habsburg English Queen would have been sent to Spain to reign and married to an Austrian Habsburg to maintain the Habsburg house on the throne. The Habsburg dynastic rules would be maintained in any case meaning that marriages between Spanish, English and Austrian Habsburgs will be the norm until the ultimate goal of the dynasty: a single head, inheriting all the Habsburg possessions, uniting all the territories in a sigle personal union, just as Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire did.

Wait a second, wasn’t the Spanish Armada sent because (or at least claimed/justified by) of the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots?
It was probably used to justify it.
No. The King of Spain didnt care much about England but about the Low Countries. He has inhereted them and his Royal house are known for trying to keep hold of there lands.
Whats more he wanted Elizabeth I as Queen over Mary Queen of Scots. Mary had very close relations/ties with the French. There was a non declared war between Spain and France and the thought of the two becoming allies wasnt something he wanted.
They should have nicknamed him Bloody Philip. He was worse than Mary. Good video!

the guy is the reason for 80 years war, war of three Henris in France, some people from Aragon also suffered in his hands and yet Mary who was no where near as his level, is called bloody
Saw him in Elisabeth: The Golden Age and I did not like his portrayal in this movie. I wonder how he communicated with Bloody Mary?
He treated Mary with respect but he did not love her. After realizing he wasn't going to have any real power and mary couldn't have children. He abandoned her and England.
Interesting! I only knew some basic details about Philip, & it was great to get more filled in. He sorta sounded less popular as a ruler than I'd thought. I was amused to learn that Portugese people refer to their kings with the honorific "Don", except for the Spanish Hapsburgs! Burn! 🤣

Philip II was everyone's favorite villain. Seems like he was stirring up trouble all over the place. He could have been so much better if he wasnt so obsessed with religion. The 80 Years War could have been prevented if he just left the Dutch Calvinists alone and stopped trying to burn them at the stake.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Philip II was a devout Catholic? I mean he was an upstanding person that created an inclusive law code in the 1500s far before anyone else and always tried to do the right thing at the end of it (whatever it takes), and he would've been deified had he been a king of kings in Sumer, but he did have mistresses until he married Anna of Austria (his niece).
It was more or less expected of kings to have mistresses in order to prove their virility to the court...
@@TheKingsofFrance I think that's just made-up reasoning: The church generally disagreed, I assume. Well, anyway, I just realized the French made a similar law code in the early 1500s: 80 years before him.
He seems to have been a decent ruler. While the Inquisition seems seems unexplicable, I know religion was very important in the 1500's and also a matter of politics. It interests me that the French did not embrace the Inquisition like its neighbor Spain. Why was this?
I should look into it for further details. I've been contemplating on doing a video on the inquisition in the future...
They did not have the Moriscos and Conversos. The Spanish Inquisition was a direct result of the Reconquista, although they did not call it as such at the time. The S.I. was meant to root out false converts for fear that they would become a fifth column.
decent ruler? seriously???????the guy who constantly declares war on either country and bankcrupts his own kingdom multiple times and the reason for 80 years war, that guy you call a decent ruler?
