- Elisabeth Of France - 11 Pregnancies And 9 Miscarriages: Elisabeth of France, daughter of Henri IV Of France and Maria de Medici, was born at Fontainebleau, 22 November 1602 and died in Madrid, 6 October 1644 She born a princess of France and became queen of Spain as the wife of Philip IV of Spain. She was deputy regent of Spain in her husband's absence during the Catalan Revolt twice, once during April-December 1642, and again 1643-1644. In 1643, she participated in a plot that resulted in Olivares' fall from power.

Once again, I'm amazed at the fortitude of these royal women. I'm relieved that her husband came to appreciate her talents before she passed away.
I agree Robert. Many of them were quite strong, despite the unfavorable circumstances the often found themselves in !
My daughter-in-law's mother had 7 pregnancies resulting in only two live babies. The heartache some women have to go through. I am happy that Elisabeth's bloodline continues to modern times. She sounds a strong, intelligent woman.
I am so very sorry for your daughter in law's losses Iris... Losing a child, let alone five of. them, is the worst thing that can happen to a mother. So very very sorry...
I can only imagine what it must have felt like for these women to be treated like birthing cattle at a time when medicine was a mix of superstition and butchery. They write books and make movies about famous war heroes, but these women were nothing short of brave warrior amazones. People often underestimate the fact that childbirth often meant automatic death for a lot of women. Royal women had often only that one job. When you now think about the famous queens that lead armies while being pregnant, you have to view "bravery" as a spectrum.
On account of my research, royal women were often brought up poorly, bc no one thought they would have a purpose apart from birthing children, so it's interesting that this view changed quite often during history.

It’s really interesting to see how Elisabeth’s genealogical legacy lives to the present day while Marianna of Austria’s was gone at the beginning of the 1700’s.
Yeah, Marianna being Philip IV's niece was the last straw for the Spanish Hapsburgs. It's so sad they had no idea inbreeding was a problem- otherwise, Austria's policy of gaining territory through marriage rather than war sounds very nice; it's just it becomes a potential disaster if it continues in subsequent generations with the same families.

@@beth7935 I'm sure they knew somewhat- that at least, it was linked, without understanding of course... like a silent truth because they were bound to marry off sons and daughters to royal cousins to keep blood purity no matter the cost.
@@ink3539 I used to think so, but I read or heard somewhere recently that they honestly didn't- they thought such problems were due to being cursed by God, like Carlos II of Spain was known as "il Hechizado"; "the Bewitched". And I'm not sure it was the reason for church consanguinity laws, cos they applied to unrelated people like in-laws & even relationships based on who was a godparent, like your sibling's godparents were out... I could be wrong tho, & if so, I'd appreciate a correction with any evidence to the contrary, cos I'd like the correct info!

@@TheKingsofFrance I don't know how u learned other languages. It's very hard. I understand u perfectly well. U might not like ur voice but I love it. The way u end sentences on an upnote, or if talking about children in peril, or anything sad,you end your sentences so demure. I have been working on a picture of the Eiffel tower. Elisabeth of France was also closely related to her husband Philip IV, King of Spain, being 2nd cousin besides other ways related as well. She being a granddaughter of Archduchess Johanna of Austria, and Philip IV being a grandson of Johanna's brother Archduke Charles of Inner Austria.
Philip IV's 2nd wife Mariana of Austria was also his niece, being daughter of his younger sister Maria Anna of Spain and her husband/1st cousin Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor.

@@TheKingsofFrance Charles I Stewart tried to court Maria Anna of Spain but it was a fiasco whit him were Buckingham and Richard Wynn the Older Buckingham got into a fight whit his Spanish counterpart (probably Olivares himself) Maria Anna refused Charles's advances and they left Spain after that they went to France where Charles met Hanryette Marie

I'm trying to work out the genealogy, but I didn't expect there to be a Hapsburg connection through the Italian de Medicis, whom I know nothing about except that Marie & Catherine _weren't_ that closely related. 2nd cousins almost sounds like a distant relationship for Hapsburg royalty tho, & evidently they were _just_ distantly related enough for their line to continue, unlike Philip's & Maria Anna's- poor old Charles II...

I agree they often did not have it easy.
She was gorgeous and strong queen and regent. Eleven children and such deep devotion to Spain, she died too young. May God bless her soul. All husbands are ungrateful for superb wives. Mistresses are still ruining many marriages.

Gaspar de Guzman y Pimental count-duke de Olivares was not only prime minister but allso the King`s ultimate favourite something like the Duke of Buckingam in England allthough i never found out anything about Gaspar being the King`s lover Buckingam on the other hand..... it was evedent that James I was interested in him as more than just a friend

Thanks for another great vid about another brilliant & interesting queen! I cheered for her getting Olivares sacked- she proved him SO wrong about women's abilities! She was a very capable Regent, as well as a popular Queen Consort, even when her kingdom was at war with the country of her birth, & she _did_ give Philip one son who nearly lived to adulthood, but it's just awful she lost so many children- a horrible example of how such very inbred royalty actually had _worse_ infant mortality than peasants. Her line did just manage to survive tho, whereas when Philip IV chose his _niece_ for his next wife, that was the last straw for the Spanish Hapsburgs- poor Charles II. It's just tragic that they didn't know inbreeding was a problem- otherwise, Austria's policy of gaining territory through marriage rather than war sounds quite nice really; it just becomes a very bad idea if repeated in subsequent generations with the same families.

The previous Valido before Olivares was his own maternal uncle Baltasar de Zuniga y Velasco Olivares was married to Ines de Zuniga y Velasco (probably Olivares's own cousin) btw Ines was the royal governess to Balthazar Carlos Prince of Asturias
Balthazar Carlos is a personal favorite of mine and my favorite Habsburg overall

Anne I was another extremely unlucky one - 17 failed pregnancies, only one surviving child, and he did not live long enough to succeed her. As a result, the Stuart line died with Anne (not counting the Pretenders), fulfilling James V's prediction that "[the Stuart line] came with a lass, and it shall go with a lass" (except that he mistakenly thought the lass was going to be his newborn daughter, Mary Queen of Scots). Catherine of Aragon was also cursed with a long string of failed pregnancies, and her only surviving child was the wrong sex. This left her husband Henry VIII with no heirs and turning to desperate measures to get one that would change the course of history.

The last Spanish Valido was Louis Mendez de Haro y Guzman Olivares's nephew and successor as royal Valido he was destroyed by Sister Maria de Agreda ho convinced the king to abolish the Valido function Louis Mendez even served as a proxy for the king's wedding
