Brilliant video! No nonsense, informative and right to the point. Precisely what I was looking and hoping for. You've got a new subscriber. Thanks, very much!
Hi Ray Love the videos that you put out there. I have resently purchased a Canon 80D. I have referred to your videos to learn more of the functions of this camera. I took up the challenge to find the HDR movie mode. I found it when the camera is on SCN mode. when the camera is in live view an icon comes up on the right hand side. Hit the Q and touch the icon. One cool feature I have learned is that the auto focus follows your finger while dragging it across the screen while recording. I was at a wedding reording the head table with a shallow depth of field. As I ran my finger from one end of the table to the other end each person would focus. Try that with a Sony 6300. I know every camera has there strengths, this just happens to be one of the Canon 80d.
Thanks Chris! You found it, awesome!;) Let me know if you see a video on here that shows it in use. The touchscreen is great and the fact that you can drag the focus point in realtime is awesome. The lack of a touchscreen is a definite issue for me when it comes to Sony. I want to move but I need a 180 degree screen and a touchscreen would be nice.
Thanks for doing this, Ray. I just bought a 70D kit after it dropped in price when the 80D kits were coming into my local Sam's Club. Part of me kept wondering if I should have gone ahead and shelled out the extra for the 80D kit instead, but I really wanted to save the money. This video helped me feel more comfortable with my purchase, and I learned a lot of extra bits on top of that.
Thanks Pat! I think you made the right choice. The 70D is just about as good and you're unlikely to miss the additions of the 80D. They're nice to have but not required.
Magic lantern on my Canon 7d takes it from a pain to use to a great video camera. The addition of focus peaking, zebras, audio level display, and focus magnification and confirmation.
Man, this is a great working review. And that rack focus from one pint to another is so sharp and smooth from the touch screen, you almost think it's 4k. That, plus being able to adjust the focus speed is a great little perk. So many nice features that fit what I want (upgrading from the Rebels), even though it's a bit annoying looking at a new 1200 dollar body with no 4k. Again, great stuff. Cheers!
Thanks, Carl. Focus on this cam is quite nice indeed. I agree, should have 4K at this price point but some of the other cams with 4K don't do everything this does so it's always a push and pull. Appreciate the comments!
Best review of the Canon 80D, hands down!!! Very detailed and informative. Almost have enough saved up for this versatile beast! Ended up selling my T5i.
HDR VIDEO listed in their camera manual on page 314. Only in MP4 and 29fps. Great review of the camera. Focusing is worth twice the price in wedding shoots.
I now have a Sony a6500 and a 70D and trying to decide which I should keep... you're one of the few convincing me that Canon may be worth keeping around!
Another great video, Ray. Thanks. I got the 80D a little while ago but appreciate your insights and will get the 28 mm lens you mentioned. Keep up the great work, Mike
I was already going to buy the 80d and was just checking some features when I came across your video. But this definitely sells it. Very solid review! Keep it up ;)
Installing magic lantern really provided everything from zebras to an intervalometer focus peaking and even zoom during recording. And it’s on a older t5. I’m sure the 80d firmware is super awesome as well....
Been shooting with a couple of 60Ds for years, and was about to buy a Sony a7S or a GH4 until I saw reviews on the 80D. Your review adds on more insights into the camera, thank you so much.
Thanks Raya. I have the 60D and still shoot it for all these videos. I would love an a7sII and will probably move to Sony next but it's hard to give up my 180 degree screen.
Thanks for this video! I am wanting to get into photography and videography seriously. I was looking into a refurbished 70D but now I think I will spend the $150 more for the refurbished 80D. Thanks again!
I am so glad it isn't just me who forgets the audio ;) I have the 70D and am very happy with it... this whole thing is pretty new to me so I haven't really hit any limits on my equipment yet. Massive learning curve. love a good learning curve , awesome vid thanks Ray! ;)
Thanks! And good luck. The key is to just shoot, make mistakes so you can see what the "wrong" way looks like. Have fun with it, just shoot and you'll do great! And make sure you hit that subscribe button and turn on the notifications so you never miss a video and keep learning;)
I think we both are in a similar boat then ... The A7R 2 was the closest one to bring me over, I know the image quality would be leaps and bounds ahead but I'm just not sure I can handle some of its quarks. All that said though, my clients are totally content with 60d image quality for wedding work, so why rock the boat.
Ray Ortega Thanks for the reply Ray, I was considering it, but as I shoot summer weddings and the temp gets quite high here, im afraid of the overheating issues.
Don Segers I've done that, thank you!,will it be better to on top of that bump the saturartion all the way down for more flexibility on color grading ?
Wow, thanks, Holly! You're killin' it here on UA-cam, congrats! Your videos look great. I'd say a little work on your audio is about all that's left. What kind of content would you like to see more of here?
This review was awsome, I have been thinking should I buy 70D or 80D but now I know wich one I will buy. Your review was really good, not too long and you didn't speak any nonsense.
Yeah the AF is a nice upgrade for sure and happy to see it creeping into the Rebel series as well. I'm not done with Canon, for sure, I'll be doing more with them on this channel
Thank you so much on this review! I found a great deal for the Canon 80D. I’m a first timer UA-camr and I really liked your other videos. I just SUBBED, I’ll definitely look at your other videos soon once I get my Canon. Thank you!
great detailed video for what i wanted to know .. and when ever i was thinking about a question you already told it next .. very clear .. thank you man
Nice that Canon is finally catching up with the others. I do love that touch screen. My 60D was really nice to me, and hard for me to let go for my GH4. I still have my Canon lenses sitting waiting to be used. Is it me or is there no 4k in the 80D.
+Ray Ortega so true, I am saving for the adapter. I refuse to sell my Canon lenses . To much invested. You made a great video. I loved the lighting, and soft shadows .. It was great work , not to mention the detail in describing/reviewing the camera.
Thanks. I have it, not a big fan but it is nice to have the option. Happy to have moved to Sony, they have great flat picture profiles including Slog in their cams that are equally priced.
Awesome review, Ray! Only question I have is this perception about .mov vs. .mp4 - Far as I've always understood it, they're both nearly identical h.264 compression flavors, with no real discernible difference. You're seeing that .mov is giving you more DR or overall image quality?
Thanks Michael! I believe the .mov in this case records the ALL-I compression vs standard or IPB which are more compressed and the bitrate is not as high as .mov which I think goes up to 90Mbps vs 60 or less in mp4 IPB. But you may be right since I didn't see much of a difference.
For most of my Canon's I've used this one amzn.to/2RUGHMc to start and stop recording. I also made a video about it ua-cam.com/video/cS-Zyy5DE1Q/v-deo.html
At around 1:45 you said that the 45 points hels with focus in video-mode!!! The 45 autofocus-points don't help with focus while recording video. In videomode it's using the sensor to autofocus, and the 45 points are "hidden" behind the mirror which is slapped up, when in videomode. The 45 points only helps when using the camera for stills - and not in live-view mode, where the sensor is also exposed, and the mirror slapped up. But nice review.
Quite a few Amazon reviewers reporting camera locked up on them during video recording. Only fix is to send it in for circuit board replacement once it locks up. Wondering if this has been solved yet by Canon
I didn't have any issues but I have heard of some people having different problems with the cam. Not sure if Canon has fixed whatever is wrong but I know some people have chose to just stick with or get the 70D because it has been reliable since its release podhelp.me/70DBodyBH (affiliate link)
Thanks for the review Sir, i really like how you setup for your videos... the lighting is pretty awesome!! keep it up!!!! b y the way, nice review on the 80d... from 60d to 80d, i can say, its a pretty good upgrade from me, instantly i can tell how much improvement i get in regards to recording video plus the headphone jack is what really stands out on this cam IMO... anyway, thanks again for the nice video.,...
Thanks. As far as lighting goes, you just really need one big soft source and that will handle 90% of what you are trying to do. Use a large window or an affordable large umbrella or softbox light.
Thank you very much for the advice.... I really appreciate it... Will take that and try to do it in my future work... again, thanks you very much sir... Have a nice day ahead.
That mirror orientation isn't a feature. It's the screen returning to normal view. It's actually kind of annoying when you don't want it to flip when you're reorienting the screen.
Cool. What I liked is that a very subtle turn is all you need to switch it. So you have options. You can choose whichever way you prefer and being able to choose is always a nice feature;) Thanks for watching!
Hi I really liked your video - very explanatory. I am a food vlogger and I am also contemplating buying a good camera. I have almost finalized this camera but right now my budget is limited so I have a few questions if you have time to answer me. 1. If I do not buy any lens as of now - will the video quality still be good? Do u have any video clip that you have shot without an additional lens? 2. As Indian streets are very noise so I face a lot of issues with the background noises, so how is the performance of this camera with respect to voice recording? I do have an external Mic that I can attach with it but just wanted to know how this camera fares without any additional gadgets. 3. How is the image stabilization as I have to walk while shooting and I do not want to end in shaky video. 4. How is the video quality at night or low light? 5. How is the auto-focus quick or slow? In fact I have a suggestion for you as I have been searching out a lot regarding these and few more points on this camera but no video talks to clearly about each of these in 1 single video. If you could make a video covering all these aspects - without additional lens or mic - then it would be very helpful & great.
Thanks for the review. It's really helpful for someone looking for a DSLR for filming. Btw, I thought you'r a golfer at the first glance of this video, lol. Good review!
Because of the outfit, lol. Definitely look like you would golf. I love and used to play a lot of golf too. Hey Ray, I got a question for 80D. For its Timelapse mode, is it possible to customize the shutter speed? Like, during the night, you would want to get longer shutter speed to do the time lapse. Thanks
Oh man, I don't recall but I feel like if you set your shutter speed then set the time lapse duration it should use that shutter speed but I also feel like there wasn't as much control as I would of liked. So basically, cause I sent the cam back, I'm no help;) I'm looking online but not finding it. And now I'm smacking my head for not remembering! Fail.
Thanks for commenting on this old video! It made me go back and watch the entire thing and got to see so many great memories! This cam, in terms of 1080p is still very good. You could certainly do a whole youtube channel with it and I think my comments in the section re: 4K are still pretty relevant. I think most of youtube is still 1080p so I don't think not having 4K would be a deal breaker if you were able to get this cam for a great price.
@@RayOrtega So nice having your response on time. I am in-between buying Canon M50 or 80D. The M50 is is being sold here in Nigeria as second hand for 690,000 Nigerian naira. While the 80D, seller decided to sell for 550,000 naira. What do you advice?
@@miahdoestech Hard to say. I haven't used the M50 but I did do two videos on the M6 which is in the same series of camera, here's the review ua-cam.com/video/pLpfMb9JNS4/v-deo.html you'll have to compare specs to the M50 to see how close they are but I mention in this video how the M6 is basically the mirrorless version of the 80D. I also did a vlog style video using the cam as well ua-cam.com/video/EZ4AcRcToI4/v-deo.html
It's a shame that you didn't also test the new 18-135 and powerzoom adapter. I bought an 80D and kit lens for still photography. Focus is instant and silent.
Yeah I wouldn't be a good person to test it cause I don't have any need for it and I don't like zooming while shooting video. But there are definitely some good reviews here that show it so make sure to check them out. Thanks for watching!
As for me, 80D it's a "deadborn baby". No 4k, no 120fps fhd, no peaking, 60fps only with ipb-compession, blury image etc. There is no big improvements vs 70D. And such a huge price...((( I wonder, is there priority mode (Av, Tv) in video. Can you find out? 70D doesn't have. BTW, good review, Ray. +1 like. ))
Dark;) Thanks for the +1. I'm definitely looking to go to Sony but I still really need the 180 degree screen but something better than the old a5100 series. Really bummed a6300 doesn't have it but hopefully soon. 80D nice cam for what it is, a Canon crop sensor but yes, no have to have upgrades from the 70D. You can use priority modes but they are weird in that you can only adjust exposure comp instead of the actual shutter. I didn't mess with it much but found that to be really weird and if that is the case then I guess it really doesn't have aperture and shutter priority despite being able to shoot video in Av and Tv modes. Thanks for watching!
+Ray Ortega So, priority modes doesn't work, as in 70D. Big minus... I'm waiting for new a5300. Hope it will have 4k, 120 fps, touch-screen etc. I'll change my a5100. Waiting for Sigma made new good lenses for e-mount. Such as 18-35/f1,8 or 17-50/f2,8 and some wide angle lens. When it happen, adios Canon totaly. )))
WOW. This is a great review. Really sold me on the 80d.
Thanks Tessa!
Sony is better for Video!
if you could record more than 30 minutes yes
EL ED any Canon DSRL can only record max. 30 min. The new Panasonic GH5 has no videotime limit!
PeterFreitag so does the gh4
Another great thing about this camera is how amazingly durable it is. It is an absolute tank!
Yes, the 80D is built very well and is one reason to choose it over the Rebel series although those aren't bad IMO.
HDR mode is called "Scene Mode" you will find a Night mode as well as HDR mode in it. I hope that helps
Brilliant video! No nonsense, informative and right to the point. Precisely what I was looking and hoping for.

I love my 80D.
Use it almost exclusively for shooting head to camera video. The face tracking AF never lets me down.
Great video!

thx for the great review

I just bought this Canon 80d March 2019 and I’m really impressed with the quality of the video! I love this camera.
Hi what power back up if I have to shoot a video continuously for an hour?
Good to know about noisy high res pictures. Exactly what I don't want while shooting night sky time lapse. THanks.
I think you can magnify to check focus. Just it doesn't work on AF Tracking mode. Works on other modes.

Thanks! Good to know. Appreciate the follow up.
6:26 should be noted focus pull speed control only works with canon lenses. pity; the tamron 2.8 24-70mm is a great all around lens.
Thank you for this video, I'm looking to buy this camera, and I believe, I will, your video convinced me. Thanks again!
Excellent, well-thought out presentation. Thank you!
Thanks!
nicely done review! just got the bundled package at costco.
+R. Mojo thx. Enjoy the cam!
Thanks for the review. It's really helpful for someone looking for a DSLR for filming. Btw, I thought you'r a golfer at the first glance of this video, lol. Good review!
Ha, that I looked like a golfer? Which one? or I just seem like I would golf..cause I do;)
Because of the outfit, lol.
Fail.
Great video man! I want this camera now!
Thanks!
HDR MODE IS IN THE DOUBLE CIRCLE (filter selection ) ON THE MAIN DIAL.
Thanks Ray!
Lovely review, couldn't skip a frame. Is it still good in 2024?
@@RayOrtega Thanks man, I'll check then out
It's a shame that you didn't also test the new 18-135 and powerzoom adapter.
When it happen, adios Canon totaly. )))
Best tutorial on 80d! Subscribed!
Thanks!
Very helpful review! Thank you!
Thanks, Ed!
I have an 80d, 5dmkiii, t3i I like them all
Great video ray. Looking at picking one up soon
