    The fact that builders can build "show house" and neglect such essential performance details is a shame. It shouldn't surprise me after being in the industry for 17 years, but it is discouraging that we have not progressed.
    I am recommending ventilation now before talking about air sealing so that customers can get it in their minds and vocabularies and try to normalize ventilation, make up air, etc. I am becoming more concerned with the health of homes than the "performance".
    Nice video, I do enjoy the trade show tours, and new product highlights. I would enjoy a semi-regular new product video showing things that are on the market and ready to implement.

    Best informative video on many products and innovations at IBS 2024. Great video Corbett.

    Great video and I loved the expressions on the faces of the manufacturer reps when you strolled up with your test equipment! Great analysis of the 7000 sq ft monstrosity of a home. It goes to show that even the high-end builders aren’t doing all the math.

    AeroBarrier rep confirming my comment in your other video regarding the claimed airtightness of that large show home - nice!!!
    Basically, 0.3 ACH50 is not happening with all those sliding glass walls etc, and my bet is 5X the claimed air leakage with all the windows and doors untaped after the test. 😊

    Really like the entire break down of the house and getting an understanding of cfm. I would love to see more examples of this information. This way we can understand the better ways to design our homes. Also, are you saying we should not be using normal bath fans in bathrooms anymore? We should be using erv fans for our bathrooms?

      I agree, the format of you reviewing a house is easy to watch and conveys a lot of info at the same time. Maybe consider making more of these, could help with the algorithm too, if you find popular home tours and then review them in this way as a 'response video'.

    Great video. At 42:50 I think they are referring to the brand of windows used in the home - not the direction...right? Also for a luxury home windows with a U factor of 0.34 seems pretty low.

    When it comes to smoke puffers, we use Cirrus brand. Uses cartridges for smoke generation (NO messy liquids). Has USB port for charging.

    The center stove exhaust fans only work well (in my experience) if you put a lid on the pan/pot and slightly move the lid towards the vent so it draws air over the food and then out. That works really well but everything else sucks.

    I have the same ExTech particle measurement device and the pm10 always shows 0 or 1 values but never more. I was wondering if you could share how you measure pm10 using this device.
    Thank you and keep the enlightenment going!

    I love the idea of the recirculating shower (RainStick) since we are building and will be on septic - anything that reduces the amount of water entering the system will improve it's performance. However, one thing I can't get a straight answer about from the company is whether or not the UV light that this unit uses operates at a wavelength that is likely to generate significant amounts of ozone. And, if ozone is being made, does having it in the shower, directly below the ERV exhaust mean that there will be minimal risk of exposure to further chemical reactions from the ozone and whatever else might be in the bathroom due to venting? Any thoughts?

    • @shubinternet
      @shubinternet 7 місяців тому

      I don't want a recirculating shower, any more than I want a toilet that is recirculating water on top of me. Because everyone pees in the shower, right? Hopefully you probably don't poop in the shower, but who knows what happens if you're sick or you just can't make it out of the shower in time.

    The aerobarrier ACH50 number being lower is because bath fans, dryer vents, etc are sealed. So it's basically cheating.
    It's sealed so the aerobarrier doesn't seal where it shouldn't.

    Great video. Sorry you run into buttheads that ask you to leave when you’re just asking questions and wanting straight forward answers.
    Not in the market right now for HVAC but when I do I’ll avoid that company.
    Keep up the great work and way to be the bigger man and take one on the chin.

    I can think of a scenario when you would want to run your ERV on recirculation mode--forest fires.

    If you wanted to use a whole house fan in a more efficient and safe manner, you could get an economizer controller and set it up for differential enthalpy control. That way, it would only run when the outside air enthalpy is lower than the inside air enthalpy. They arnet that expensive, about $700 at Supply House I think.

    @52:45 -- you talk about the glass doors in the master bedroom and the interior curtain track, and how this would be better served by exterior screens or shades. I'm curious -- do you have any recommendations for brands or types of exterior shades or screens? Because the only thing I know about in this space is German-style Rolladen, and I don't think those are going to work here. So, I wonder -- what would work here?

  • @lindacgrace2973
    @lindacgrace2973 7 місяців тому +2

    You have a toxin-exuding gas stove in your kitchen! Gas stoves leak 75% of the toxic gasses when they are turned off and the vent hood fan isn't on. Don't try to con people into ugly ersatz fireplaces, just specify a Wood Burning Russian Masonry Heater. Russian stoves are the only wood burning fireplaces allowed to be built in the (highly regulated) state of California. Because they have glass fire doors (like wood stoves), room air never mingles with combustion gasses or particles from the fire. There's no backdrafting. All combustion air is drawn from outdoors. Smoke, gasses, and particles from the fire are not directed to a vertical flue, but circulate around and behind the firebox and take a long serpentine route to the top of the chimney. This essentially turns the chimney surround and chimney breast into a clean exhaust system while extracting the maximum amount of heat from the fire. [Whoopee! I get to play Borg Queen] Your efforts to convince people in cold climates that they don't want a real fireplace are futile. Investigate Russian wood burning stoves.
