@@maikelpeeters7328 I mean I did the swap and tested it myself dude. The i7 absolutely made this computer faster. It is a bit warmer too. battery life is a bit less. But no, the i5 will absolutely not run faster don’t be silly. Throttling mostly occurs under a consistent heavy load like rendering a video or moving large files from drive to drive. It’s not like the cpu just runs on maximum overdrive at all times. And yea I tested that too, rendering a 5 min video on the i7 took about 3/4 the time that the i5 took to render the same video. definitely faster. Not by a huge margin or anything. The i5 was still usable, but noticeably hitched from time to time. These Thinkpads had different i5s too. You are probably referring to the i5 m540, which performance wise has very little difference to the i7 640. Mine had the i5m520. The slowest cpu these computers came with. They wouldn’t have sold the i7 models at a premium if there wasn’t a difference. And yeah they sold these with i7 models at a higher price when they were new. The biggest difference between these 2 cpus is cache size, which I believe is mostly the reason the i7 is faster. Even if you somehow were to lock these cpus at 2.9 gigaherts with proper cooling installed, the i7 would be inherently faster because of its larger cache size. Even when throttling down the i7 would be consistently faster because 2.9ghz is its base frequency. 2.93 is the i5s max boost frequency. Also these cpus have the same tdp rating of 35w so there isn’t any reason the stock cooler wouldn’t be sufficient enough.
I would argue in your favor, however, just like many laptops at that time, that the cooler was never designed to be efficient enough from the get-go. Sorry for ranting. Thanks for watching
I did the CPU upgrade on mine last year - this week I went from 4 to 8 gigs of ram and installed an SSD. My 410 is back on the desk after like 8 years of sitting at least.
People literally throw old laptops out just because of faulty hard drives and in the case of this one, it’s literally one Philips screw to yoink out the drive and toss in a ssd. Hell, even if you buy a new laptop, ssds are so cheap now that you still might as well fix the old one for a back up. Linux is free. The ssd upgrade alone is always the biggest performance booster for any computer that came stock with a HDD. This computer was perfectly usable with the 4gigs of ram and i5 it came with. It just needed a ssd!!!
Thanks for watching! T530 has quad core and dedicated graphics right? I wish I scored one of those but I’ve wanted an old Thinkpad to tinker with for a while, and getting one for free was great so I really can’t complain.
@@adamturtle69 man my buddy had a newer Thinkpad provided to him by his work and the thing had 1 or 2 usb ports and took about 3 minutes just boot to get to the log in screen. It was pretty thin, but had a HDD in it. That may have been installed by the school he works for. Also no upgradable ram. Locked at 4 gigs soldered to board. Core i3 soldered to board. That shit straight up sucked.
I got T410 from a friend then bought one i7 640m for 10USD but faulty, continuously reboot after bios screen. Then I ended up with an 620m at 6USD. Works nicely on Mint with document and youtube.
Thanks for watching. The answer to your question is NO, this laptop will not take the quad core i7 740. Only the dual core i7 640 or i7 620, which are still capable of running 4 threads at once thanks to hyper threading tech. I could be mistaken, but I think it’s the larger model, the T510, that utilized the quad core processors like the i7 740qm you mentioned. If you have the same model as mine, it’s dual core only.
@@theartshow1476 I think it may work considering that I've seen someone do it with a Dell Latitude E6410 (with dedicated NVIDIA graphics) which is basically the Dell version of the ThinkPad T410. It would need to be the T410 model with the dedicated NVIDIA graphics though since the i7 740QM does not have integrated graphics. It may not work but I've never seen it attempted.
@@SimSimsTECHcrunchtwo completely different manufacturers my guy. Although they used similar parts like the track pad, The dell latitude is not just a Thinkpad. The T410 did have integrated graphics options from the factory, but still were not compatible with the quad cores of that time. Trust me. I looked into it well before actually purchasing the i7 640. all information I have found online says that any t410 model, with or without dedicated graphics, cannot utilize the quad cores. I do remember reading somewhere that the larger t510 model could be upgraded to a quad core, but didn’t ever come stock with them. I could be wrong though. Small correction, the port that you called the "printer" port is actually a 56k modem, used for dial up or fax. So technically you're right but also wrong.

no point of doing that....the heatsink is so tiny it will thermal throttle all the time...first gen i7 run hot like hell...so the i5 will be faster

The i7 620 was a CPU that this laptop wass available with from factory. My t410 has the nvidia chip and still does not throttle with the i7 cpu.
