"Captain Rex, mind explaining what in the hell you're wearing?"
*"Sir-- a superior suit of armor, sir."*
Yeah but at that point he was one of their most decorated soldiers as well as known throughout the entire army as an example of a good commander.
Reprimanding him for anything short of ignoring orders would bring down troop morale emmensily
@@SpectralKnight and probably be career suicide. If you became known as the officer who Reprimanded Captain Rex, for his armour that was likely as recognisable as he was. There isn't a soldier or officer in the Republic that would let you live that down.
Very nice. Now lets see Paul Allen's clone armor
@@SpectralKnight I mean, he learned from THE master of ignoring orders.
Anakin "and what are you wearing!?!"

I don't know how. Phase II is stronger. Eck is wrong here. Every source says that Phase II armor plates were stronger and lighter than the Phase I armor plates. Phase II was also had more advanced armor systems and was more modular.
Rex is literally just nostalgic, and kept the pieces that he likes better.
@@jmmproductions6741 the chest plate in p1 was actually stronger than p2, maybe the visor/range thingy was actually better in the phase 1 helmet which could be why in universe.over all it really depends how the armour is setup. maybe rex wanted the mando esc design rather than phase 2

It’s interesting that the Phase 2 armor cared more about efficiency than protection, almost feels symbolic of Palpatine wanting to end the war quicker and dispose of the clones soon after gaining control.
The phase 2 armor was also supposed to be more comfortable though. There’s lots of talk about phase 1 just straight up sucking to sit in. Phase 2 also opened up far more specialization.
Phase 2 had better environmental protection and endurance though. This was necessary due to the war expanding further out than originally expected and clones facing far more hostile and varied ecosystems.
No need for protection if you kill first 😂

I wonder if it was also Anakin's influence to a lesser degree with the engineering thinking's. This but is better so keep that, that bit is more comfortable so keep that.
Very likely, you could tell the clones took on alot of Ahsoka's and Anakin's attributes like self sufficiency, engineering heads and that massive amount of respect for others. Just look at their helmets at the end of Clone Wars, they're painted to look like Ahsoka, and they still called her Commander.
That makes a ton of sense, especially since Anakin loves tinkering with things. If Rex let him know that be wanted to really trick out his armor, Anakin would have given him tools others clones wouldn't even have access to.
@@rosesweetcharlotte I‘m pretty sure as a Commander he would have had access to any tool he needed, but I could see Anakin giving him tips on which tools would be the best for his modifications.
@@rosesweetcharlotte probably how he welded the armour too

His armor is really nice looking in the clone wars animated show I always enjoy looking at it

In rebels After getting shot
Rex: "phase 1 armor always holds up!"
I was about to comment this!!!
“Why did he do this?” To sell toys, i assume
From a design standpoint, it also allows Rex to maintain a similar look for longer, which makes him far easier to identify.
Hints in “A New Hope” when Luke says “I can’t see a thing” when he has the trooper armor and helmet on
But Lukes armour in that scene is actually some Phase3-armour, the stormtroopers armour...
There's an in-lore explanation for that:
Stormtrooper armor is actually very advanced, incorporating a wide variety of technologies, including aim assist, thermal imaging (I am not entirely certain on this one, I know it has some form of visual assistance for seeing through smoke), adaptable lens to mitigate blaster-fire flashes etc.
The reason Luke couldn't see was because the helmet only operated alongside the rest of the suit *and* the original wearer. All of those technologies supposedly worked only if the Stormtrooper who got issued the suit was wearing it.
@@Azachor seems quite possible. Clone armour wouldnt care if (for example) Jesse or Tup wears a helmet, given the fact that they are having literally the same body, but stormtrooper, who are just normal people would need the armour specialised for them
Couldn't he also. Like, legit not see in it or something I've heard that before dont know if it was true or not.
@@jacktheripper7735 It is definitely possible because stormtrooper helmets use two eyes instead of a visor, this is similar to say a pair of binoculars. Their great for focussing on one point in the distance however you lose the majority of your environmental awareness.
Rex had a similar problem in Rebels where he complained about the low visibility of the helmet before throwing it at a trooper and showing immediate improvement of his aim.
It's probably a combination of this fact and the in universe explaination. Afterall if you design a helmet that almost entirely relies on technology to see and assist the wearer with aiming then there would be little need for a full on visor and considering the visor it self would be a weak spot as well, it wasn't added.
in star wars rebels he get shot on the chest and then says "nothing like phase 1 clone armor" so he was mostly doing as what you think
Some didn't watch or forgot so probably as a token of appreciation for the reminder

@@jackb.2245 It isn’t the same. Lego is better
I was wondering the same thing lol
Hey I got good news for you
@@AdamAkmalHizam dw, I knew a while ago after checking in with Lego Star Wars this year.
It’s also proven and theorized that the reason that the newer storm troopers had bad sun was because of the bad visor of phase II helmets. With this in mind, Rex was able to maintain a visor that would allow higher precision
Makes no sense considering the new visor has more room to see
You're mixing stormtroopers with clone troopers
Except that their aim isn't bad. They act as if they wanna kill Han and Luke but they're ordered not to in order to find the rebel base where they fly to afterwards. Obi Wan even said that the attack on the Jawas could only be done by stormtroopers because no one else has that much precision. It also doesn't make sense why they would choose armor that's worse than the ones the clones had
@@hijo1998 also the only reason luke can't see is because the helmet doesn't fit him, it's not made for him unlike the person who was originally wearing it
@@gigaballsv1nce910 I‘m pretty sure the Phase 1 visor allows for a better FoV as well…it’s bigger than the Phase 2 visor
Commander Wolfe: I'm too modest to complain but will make my existence known
Wolfe only customized his helmet. Albeit, he customized A LOT, but only the helmet.
Wolffe had a BARC trooper helmet. It wasn’t modified beyond a rangefinder and his markings
honestly after hearing this.... rex actually put alot more thought into his armour then anyother clone, he was quick and well protected... rex is a true badass
I knew he welded his armour, but I never knew a lot of the things you just explained 👀☺️
He also got shot in the chest during season 2, and survived, so i imagine that added a level of trust to the phase I armour for him

I always assumed that Anakin didn’t care what his troopers wore, as long as they were comfortable and effective. We do tend to see a much higher rate of customization, names and personality and individualism in the 501st.
I always really liked that, it made Anakin feel different from other Jedi, and made his troops feel different too. Not bad, or evil or anything like that… just different… clearly not fitting into the strict rules of the Jedi and Republic.
It's weird how there's meant to be a significant difference between Phase 1 and Phase 2 clone armor but they're identical in every way except the helmet.
They're not actually. The Phase II armor allows more freedom of movement and comfort, so plates are shaped differently around certain areas (notably the crotch and joints). Changes a very subtle, but you can notice a couple areas which were tight or cumbersome. The wrist commlink is also on the right arm.
Rex: most unique armor
Bad batch: hold my beer.

He was an unusually smart and unique person, for a clone, I think that is a large part of the reason his character is so popular amongst fans.
I honestly never noticed this. I thought he got some special helmet while the weld marks were just regular markings some clones have
I am so glad he kept the T visor. Really respecting his armor and it's durability

It's lore like this that show why Rex is a lot of people's favourite star wars character.
Wrecker cough cough
Everyone in that squad likely had their gear retooled & improved regularly. They were all experimental units, and it probably took some tinkering before both their gear matched their perks, and they meshed with eachother.
It's fitting, he wants peak efficiency so he molded together the best pieces of each armor and effectively removed the negatives, plus it expresses individualality which was incredibly sought out by most clones so it's fitting he would make his own unique armor
Not to mention how incredibly superstitious soldiers can be. I'd imagine it would be a "this armor has saved my ass multiple times, so changing it would be bad luck" kind of thing. Just like how Marines DON'T EAT THE CHARMS!
So that why in rebel the armor plant get shot only hurt him

It’s not Rex’s antenna, it’s a binoculars he pulls down in front of his right eye when needed.

The jaig eyes are a Mandalorian symbol, and probably wanted to keep that iconic T visor that’s reminiscent of the mando T visor. Especially when he’s a Gen 1 and trained by Jango.
In summary Rex is dripped out
Rex also has some of the greatest lines
I finally understand what were those welding lines !! Thank you
Cool vid! Never noticed this before!
“Rex has the most unique clone armor”
Keeli: “am I fuckin joke to you”
He is always special
Think of him keeping the old phase 1 front chest plate as a sort of Cuirass, which replaced full plate armor to successfully protect against musket rounds. He basically took a cuirass and stuck it on full plate armor.
I think he kept the chest piece because it saved his life
I am surprised that I have never noticed the change in armor in the prequels, especially since I just watched them last month.
And this is why Rex is my favorite clone
Best Clone of all time
Phase 1 had more info on the hud where the mouth piece had better communication suite and better air purification
I can’t believe I never even noticed that his visor was still the old phase 1 visor. That’s actually really cool I always preferred the phase one visor compared to the phase 2 visor
After the war, Rex could have gotten a job as a welder cause those beads are CLEAN.
This is the Star Wars equivalent of jungle mags from Vietnam war.
Stuff like this is how you tell fresh recruits from veterans.
He’s my favorite clone
Thanks
I believe the reason for the helmet was that the phase 1 visor had better vision, but the phase 2 rebreather was better. As for the armor, he did get sniped in the Clone Wars TV series and survived because of the phase 1 armor, so it makes sense that he trusts that armor with his life, literally, since it has already proven effective at saving him.
Captain Rex Min-Maxing his stats like a true gamer.
We need an mmorpg free roam clone wars game, where we can get get customizable armor sets with set bonuses that can increase certain damages depending on what build you wanna go for

Wow you learn new things every day. Thanks.
The transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2 armor is something that is often seen in history when a country makes a switch from a civilian ecomony to wartime production. Adjustments are often made to military equipment in order to help with mass production and to function better in the kind of war you're waging.
Makes sense, the phase two was the precursor to the quote on quote “phase three” armor, and we all know how well that holds up in the visibility category…
