Laura, I am from Trinidad and my grandmother had them growing in her front yard. It was about 6 ft tall and when we were little we got excited cause the reds leaves meant that Christmas was coming! Merry Christmas!
My mother-in-law planted all of hers after Xmas and they too grew huge quickly, up to the window sill. Leaves turned all bright green. I forget if they turned back to red at Xmas. She lived in Palm Desert. Always love your videos and your house was gorgeous with Xmas. Happy New year to you!
I bought one from my sister, fundraiser at school. I’ve never taken care of a pant before things my first one. I set it outside to get sunlight and wind knocked it over and broke 3 big branches!! I mad at myself
Just came back from a trip to Mexico. I saw several homes with Poinsettia TREES in their home patios! They were about 6 ft tall and fully bloomed. I never thought they would grow that tall or look that beautiful. Thanks for your tips!
In the house i grew up in Cuba we had a poinsettia tree. My great grandfather planted it. Over there we know them as “matas de pascua”. The patio looked so beautiful this time of the year because of this tree. Im going to take your advices and plant the store bought one my mom gave me last week. Thanks
I buy or receive them every year..it was awhile before I even knew they rebloomed once I found out I tried & was unsuccessful..I'm going to follow your tips..I have one & it's March & so far so good..👍😊
Thank you for this video. I just got a bunch for $1.98 Home Depot and I am propagating some branches but plan on keeping them year-round. I am planning on covering them maybe with thick black trash bags instead of moving them. I really want them to turn into little mini trees. One of them has the branch cut and it looks like old wood on the bottom so I am very hopeful for that one. I’m just trying my best not to overwater. I added a lot of perlite just in case.
My mom and I have a lovely poinsettia that has miraculously stayed alive for two Christmases.. we will adopt some more tips to help Plant flourish even more
When you said about just not letting even a sliver of light to touch the plant during the rest perion i realised why half of my pkant is not much colored up while the rest is pretty advanced. It a dact that we have a light in the verandah right above the plant, a part of it remains shaded but the rest is is in light l night long since i put up the light every night. 😅thank you for rhe lovely guide. My plant is doing fantabulous ! It is more than 4 ft high(no kidding), right next to our verandah . And my mom loves it soo soo much. Merry Christmas! 😍😘
I got a new variety this year called Green with Envy. Its colored leaves are really bright chartreuse green. I have a dwarf variety that I've had for about six years. I never give it a dark period and yet it re-reds every year. In the summer, I prune it and put it outside in a filtered sun area.
I planted my poinsettia out in the garden for the past 2 years. It grows into the most beautiful lush plant during the summer. I bring it in and winter it over but have not tried getting it to bloom again. Thanks for the tips. I’m putting it on my calendar right now to try this next fall.
Now I understand why the 8 poinsettias I bought last month died last week. The person in the big box store told me they only needed to be watered once before Christmas. I'll know better for next year. Thank you for the information!
Last year my Father in Law gave me one like the small one in the front of your shot. I planted in the garden and it is now a beautiful hip high bush. That’s Florida for you.:)
Where in Florida? I live in Tallahassee and it gets quite cold and even if they do make it out in the landscape, they don't really flower. At least their flowers don't redden completely. Either way, I will attempt to fertilize and "cover" to coax them into flowering next late fall and winter season.
I got poinsettias. There are very beautiful. I knew that toxic sap came out of the plant. I water them when the soil dries out. Your poinsettias are very pretty and colorful.
Great video! I knew that getting them to bloom again is a lot of work, but worth it. If you just want it to keep growing without the red foilage just don't keep it in the dark. I had one last year and forgot to water it just once and it died. I'm going to try again this year because they are such a pretty plant. Thank you Laura for all the info on how to care for these beautiful plants. See you in the next video.
I'm in Canada and my poinsettia turned red all on her own in November. She was sitting in a north facing window all year. I was so happy I didnt need to fuss with putting her in a closet. I guess it just the type of light further north gets that helped trigger the change.
Thanks Laura, poinsettias are alot of work. Since I live in south Texas I've started sticking mine outside in the garden and they do well. I only have to cover them up during cold spells and they survive. I've also seen them grow here 10 or more feet high and red to boot, go figure! Great info you gave very helpful.
Thank you for the information. I may have to try this, it will be a challenge to get it to rebloom. I never knew you could put them outside in Summer. That would be very helpful.
Always enjoy your lovely, helpful videos!! I did the darkness technique with a box this year. I did get good color on the tops of all branches in about a month starting in Oct & ending in early Nov. And I was really good about 12 hours of darkness or more - making sure that it had at least 6 hours of light. But I was very sloppy about my cover & uncover times. Maybe I was just lucky - but it wasn't as regimented as I thought - but yes - still time consuming. After wanting to do the process for so long - glad I did it. But I did break two branches - it got too big for the box & I should have cut it back before. And unfortunately it has lost most of it's lower leaves by now - but I don't think it is a water problem - I suspect a spider mite problem - which I just coated it with a homemade horticultural oil blend. Unless, you think that me doing the darkness for a month instead of 2 would cause lower leaf drop? I would appreciate any comments from you regarding this & how you cope with spider mites & if you ever had them on Poinsettias. But in any case MERRY CHRISTMAS, & wish MANY BLESSINGS FOR YOU & YOUR FAMILY IN 2019!!
I hope I receive one this year for Christmas. I’m going to challenge myself to use these steps for me it would be a great accomplishment and a challenge. Thanks for the video
One year I got lazy with my pointsettia and just put it in the sunroom after it being outside for the summer and didn’t worry about the no light thing. We don’t use that room at night, so no lamps on or anything after sundown except maybe quickly turning lights on to check on something, but there’s plenty of light from streetlights and businesses coming in the windows and patio doors from 3 sides. It doesn’t get light from inside the house though. It still colored up beautifully and has each year since- 4 years. It’s much easier than putting them in a closet when I got home from work and getting them out every morning like I had previously done, and the plants actually look much better this way.
My mom would give me one every Christmas . She gave me my last one 3 years ago she passed away last year from cancer . I have her still. I pray every time I water her that she doesn’t die .
Laura worked at garden centre for 10 years also she worked at the vet's clinic for 5 and half years. Also she makes really good UA-cam videos. Also she has a beautiful baby. Wow! 👍👍😀😇
Thank you so much for the video! My fiancee gave me a Poinsetta, and I want to maintain it looking great and do my best to have it rebloom the following year. Hard work, and it's worth it to keep one of my sweetheart's gifts alive!
Thanks for the tip i just bought one the leaf are already falling because i put next the window and it is very cold yesterday we had snow here in europe thanks Laura 👌🤗
Very nice video Laura! I had a Blue point Himalayan kitten who thought she was a goat and one year got on my table and ate away at my Poinsettia. I quickly called my veterinarian who assured me that my kitten would be fine. ( of course any time any one or thing could have an allergic reaction, even to healthy foods) I was so relieved that after my entire life hearing how poisonous a Poinsettia is to know my cat would be just fine. It was impossible to keep my dear kitten out of a Poinsettia, or a floral arrangement of baby's breath and roses . She even ingested the thorns. I believe that she had been a goat before. lol! btw ...my kitten grew up and lived to be over 18 years of age.
The dark treatment sounds similar to what you so for a Christmas cactus? Also glad to hear they're not THAT toxic. I never bought them because I have cats!
I adore poinsettias! My parents are from México and they are very popular during Christmas! My mom has some in pots and always wonders why they never turn red, thanks for the tips! We will grow ours right next year :)
I kept mine barely alive enough to plant out in a front container and it got HUGE outside and did great all summer, ti was too big to bring in and overwinter it. So just got 4 new ones for Christmas to plant out again in the spring.
I bought a poinsettia today and it was very expensive, because they planted it in a beautiful pot. I’m trying to figure out how I can keep this plant growing all year round in its pot. I watched this video but still am a little confused of how to do this
Holy moly I had heard that they were super high maintenance plants, & by golly I heard right. I'm lucky enough to keep my succulents alive... Yes succulents. Haha Thank you for sharing! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all of you at Garden Answers!!!!! May God bless your new year!
Just ignore your plants and then finally give them attention best way to care for them. Also soak don't pour water in and good drainage. Go buy plants and have fun
Thanks for all your great tips! Just a FYI- euphorbia sap is EXTREMELY irritating to your eyes. So be sure to wash hands thoroughly w/soap after pinching back.
To help with humidity, can you put rocks and water in saucer like in the Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter Cacti video. Enjoyed both. Love your show. Always informative and beautiful plants. Love your home.
Great video. I learned a few things! But about pets, in some cases, they may need medication from eating a poinsettia. From Huffpost article: "If your pet should eat your poinsettia, Konecny recommends calling your vet or ASPCA poison control. "Often the signs are mild and ingestion is generally not life threatening," she said, adding that, "depending on the amount ingested and the clinical signs, supportive care (fluids, medication) may be necessary." Article: "Are Poinsettias Poisonous? Here's What You Need To Know"
re: watering....my mom in law always said to take the sleeves off, and place them all in the bathtub full of water...that we should be watering from the bottom/roots versus the top!
great tips. thank you. Found out the hard way that squirrels like poinsettias. lost 2 I had nursed from last Christmas until June when I found them eaten down to the root and dug up on the porch.
My mom had one from like the grocery store and she kept it in its nursery pot for a whole year and it wasn’t doing well, and I felt sorry for it and so out of desperation I planted it in the ground outside, and now it’s doing really well, but now my parents are pressuring me to get it to bloom again lol
Thanks so much for your wonderful knowledge. I buy them every year and they end up losing all the beautiful leaves before Christmas Day. Now I know what to do for next year. Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you so much for all the information!! I have never tried to keep a poinsettia but do enjoy their beautiful color for the short time I have one. Nice video for my coffee morning!
I have so so many if your vids saved for care. You are my go to for everything plant You go into enough detail its fascinating but not to much its confusing which. Well layed out and helpful
My mother in law gave me a poinsettia, I've had it for about 5 years now. I've never tried to get it to blossom, I feel good if I can keep it from dying.
Or you could just move to a hot climate; it may be easier. Fantastic video thank you; I'll keep trying although all the supermarkets here in UK keep them in the lobby!
I just put coffee grounds on my ponsettia for fertilizer and my plant is still going from last Christmas. It's even got a few red brachs left. I have seen a cat that chewed on those Shamrock holiday plants (Oxalis) and the poor cat got bladder stone and big vet bills. I don't know if they vet connected the bladder stones with the plant chewing. I had to point it out to the owner. I was petsitting and noticed the chewing and removed the plants, but kitty was sick already. I don't know about poinsettias, but vets don't always know the cause of health problems that come up.
Update: It is Dec 4 and I never bothered to cover up my poinsetta for 12 hours every night starting in fall and in spite of that, I have had a nice development of new red brachs. The plant looks really cute and real. The leaves and brachs are relatively tiny compared to the huge brachs and leaves I saw on the forced plants for sale at Home Depot: those were so big they wouldn't fit in my house!
My Walmart keeps its poinsettias outside in the garden area. Many people here around New Orleans grows them outdoors year round. They make pretty little bushes after time.
Great info. Just curious, how do they get the complete darkness and grow so beautifully in their natural environment? Do they not need this to “color up” the leaves really red? Thanks. Great job! ❣️
Exactly what I was thinking....does southern Mexico ever get 12 to 15 hours of total darkness? Apparently it does. Nov through Jan average about 11 hours of daylight. No kidding.
@@uranus_crunch_cake87 yes, they do, Mexico is a large country, the northern parts of Mexico will get 12 h of night from autumn equinox slowly getting longer, reaching just over 14 hours during winter solstice in June southern parts will not get nights as long because they are closer to the equator.
One of my favorite plants in the winter. 💖 I have kept a poinsettia all year , I will tell you it got huge.. But, now I have a cat who loves to eat all plant life so it scares me he will eat it now 😰 so I can only admire its beauty at far 😢. Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful family. 🎅🎄
Hallelujah..at last someone who can point me in the right direction to care for these gorgeous plants.. Although jeez... That's a lot of maintenance for such a beautiful plant. But hey ho.. the results are so worth it!🤗
it has the i in the pronunciation. I live in Greenville Sc and that is where the original hot houses were set up by John Roberts Poinsett. He was ambassador to Mexico by President Madison. We have a famous hotel that is beautiful called the Poinsett Hotel. So it may be regional for pronunciation but the correct way to pronounce it is to make it 4 syllables and have that i in there.
Awe, i wish i would have seen this last year! I had a big beautiful plant that did well thru the holidays til fall. Then it died. Now i know why! I love your videos, thx for sharing
I have a green thumb but have never been able make my poinsettias thrive. The leaves fall off even though I try not over water. I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Thank you for your video, poinsettia is my most favorite gift I love to receive, but now I know why mine aren't lasting very long, ver informative♥ Happy Holidays to you and yours★★★★
Thanks for the tips! Might be fun to try to rebloom. I remember seeing a 3’ poinsettia shrub in Naples Fl. Spectacular but we are zone 6. Too chilly 🥶 here!
You are amazing I like how you can give a lot of useful information and cover all kind of questions that we are thinking about in a short time and wonderful way Thanks a lot 🌹🌹🌹
Wow Laura☀️☀️☀️. Great timing with all this good information. I bought 3 beautiful poinsettias yesterday- you may have helped me save them….at least thru the holiday… keeping them year round…. Sounds like way too much work 😳. Your poinsettias looked beautiful 😎
5:50 One of the dogs I was walking for my neighbor as a side business got into her poinsetta and the dog got super sick from it. It developed pancreatitis and lived for a long time afterwards but it had a special diet and a gnarly scar running down his side. I also think it must've ate the soil the plant was in so exposure to pesticides pests and fertilizer probably wasnt great for him either
Thank you, Laura! I skimmed through the comments, but didn't see where my question has been asked. My apologies if I missed it. Here's my question: What happens during the time when it needs 5 PM to 8 AM darkness if you miss a day or two? Life happens...and sometimes we go on little excursions for a few days. Do I need to hire a poinsettia caretaker? Or just hope for the best when we return home?
This is exactly where this plant gets called diva....the smallest disturbance can throw the whole balance off. She may hold her breath and bloom in March just to be difficult 😎
😇🎄 Hi Laura, I found this video, to be very informative, and although I don't buy poinsettias, is because one, I only thought poinsettias were a Christmas plant, and as I got older, did I know that poinsettias can last as long as you know how to properly care for them. Thank YOU for sharing this information on { How to PROPERLY care for poinsettias }🌿😊💜 🎄🎅🎁❄⛄🎩🌿
I WAS interested in keeping mine around but you were right... way too much to do. lol Interestingly, I have had one thriving on my patio here in Dallas since I got it. No freezing temps but it has gotten down to 35* a few times.
The poinsettias you have are beautiful. I still need to get some. Thanks for all the tips.
Laura, I am from Trinidad and my grandmother had them growing in her front yard. It was about 6 ft tall and when we were little we got excited cause the reds leaves meant that Christmas was coming! Merry Christmas!
Geeta Maharaj hey Trini! They look so beautiful home
Hey Trini, Where do you live? Are you a gardener?@@TheChampdeFleurs
Geeta Maharaj I’m in Chicago and new to planting. I love it.
Hey...so am I!!!
I’m officially overwhelmed, but I’ll still try to keep my poinsettia alive. Wish me luck.
Same but I’m trying lol
Thanks
I buy or receive them every year..it was awhile before I even knew they rebloomed once I found out I tried & was unsuccessful..I'm going to follow your tips..I have one & it's March & so far so good..👍😊
Now I know why my poinsettias always die.
I have done everything wrong!!
Glad to get some great instruction.
My mom and I have a lovely poinsettia that has miraculously stayed alive for two Christmases.. we will adopt some more tips to help Plant flourish even more
Thanks for the detailed care info. I had NO idea how much maintenance is required 🤯 I'm wishing myself luck 🤞🏽
Thank you for the information.
Poinsettia: Diva of the plant world.
In México we call them Noche Buenas 😃
Yes me to
I got a new variety this year called Green with Envy. Its colored leaves are really bright chartreuse green. I have a dwarf variety that I've had for about six years. I never give it a dark period and yet it re-reds every year. In the summer, I prune it and put it outside in a filtered sun area.
I just trimmed and reported mine as I listened to the video. I like the challenge of regrowing it, this ones my first
I was wondering why my poinsettia didn’t redden! Thanks Laura!
I planted my poinsettia out in the garden for the past 2 years. It grows into the most beautiful lush plant during the summer. I bring it in and winter it over but have not tried getting it to bloom again. Thanks for the tips. I’m putting it on my calendar right now to try this next fall.
Good idea to setup reminders!

So much information. Thank you! During the winter time when you keep the plant in darkness, do you water and fertilize?
I just bought a huge one at Costco n I love it! What a beautiful plant
Great video! I knew that getting them to bloom again is a lot of work, but worth it. If you just want it to keep growing without the red foilage just don't keep it in the dark. Happy holidays!
Thanks Laura, poinsettias are alot of work. Since I live in south Texas I've started sticking mine outside in the garden and they do well. Thank you for mentioning the sliver of light. I haven't seen any other mention of it. I'm going to try to keep mine for as long as possible!

I hope I receive one this year for Christmas. I’m going to challenge myself to use these steps for me it would be a great accomplishment and a challenge. Thanks for the video
I still remember my childhood in Mexico when they bloom it smells beautiful
These three shades complete the house and it is completely lighted nicely.
One year I got lazy with my pointsettia and just put it in the sunroom after it being outside for the summer and didn’t worry about the no light thing. It’s much easier than putting them in a closet when I got home from work and getting them out every morning like I had previously done, and the plants actually look much better this way.
I thank you for these instructions on how to keep my big poinsettia I just won looking great thru out the holidays.
Wow! 👍👍😀😇
Not only worked there but grew up there! 💕
shweta1006 ....And has sound marriage to a great guy!!!
And she has a ventriloquist dummy from outer space 🚀🌌🤡
Thank you so much for the video! My fiancee gave me a Poinsetta, and I want to maintain it looking great and do my best to have it rebloom the following year. Hard work, and it's worth it to keep one of my sweetheart's gifts alive!
I am a florist... I have them specifically grown 80 this week and 80 next week... many beautiful varieties
Daaang!!! I never knew that they needed that much attention!! Wow...it takes a lot to keep them beautiful. Thanks for the info, Laura.
Thank you for the pronunciation info! That's why i was watching poinsettia videos. I pronounce it without the "i".
The dark treatment sounds similar to what you so for a Christmas cactus? Also glad to hear they're not THAT toxic. I never bought them because I have cats!

You have presented the best video on Poinsettia care here on UA-cam.
I bought a poinsettia today and it was very expensive, because they planted it in a beautiful pot. I’m trying to figure out how I can keep this plant growing all year round in its pot. I watched this video but still am a little confused of how to do this

I was gifted 3 year round poinsettias; Love love love this thank you.
We do almost completely the opposite here..We water with ice cold with actual ice in when we plant in pots and keep them mostly away from sun 😃
great tips. thank you. Found out the hard way that squirrels like poinsettias. lost 2 I had nursed from last Christmas until June when I found them eaten down to the root and dug up on the porch.

Thanks! Loved the tips on picking the best poinsettia .
Thank you so much for all the information!! I have never tried to keep a poinsettia but do enjoy their beautiful color for the short time I have one. Nice video for my coffee morning!

They make pretty little bushes after time.
we had one in our church that was about 7 feet tall right by the front door haha, that thing was about 25 years old when it died. it was huge.
That is interesting and a lot of work! I feel like just buying another one!
that rash you also get with a dipladenia, what helps is to wash you hands if your getting the sap on your hand
They are so much hard work.
I’ll try to buy some and plant them and keep them in my basement bathroom 🎄
Thx for sharing that information. I didnt know that,🌞
Starla Kelsey thank you!!
And from another SC Mastergardener about 3/4 of all these plants grown for the Southeast still start their lives in SC, our County especially
Going to try to keep mine and care for them !! Keeping this video in mind for later !!! Thanks you !!!!
Yeeees! Thank you for making this. They always die on me😱
Awe, i wish i would have seen this last year!
In Mexico they grow so big and beautiful 😄
Thanku for such inspirational words for Poinsettia care
Always buy Poinsettia for Xmas Time which brings that Jolly feeling. Used to buy them from greenhouse but they're no longer in business
Oh My! Interesting but now I know why they are Seasonal! Great info! thanks!
Excellent presentation! And you are an excellent teacher! You covered everything anyone needs to know about poinsettias. Thanks!
Here in México we know them as "noche buena" Once i heard that, they like cold water so i put ice cubes on the top of the soil instead of watered
A friend of ours just retired with her husband to Mexico and what do you know? Poinsettias are actually huge humongous trees!
Charming & cute flowers. It's @ Christmas flower.
Have you seen the white and pink marbled Poinsettias? they're spectacular!
I love that one with varigated leaves
You are amazing
I like how you can give a lot of useful information and cover all kind of questions that we are thinking about in a short time and wonderful way
Thanks a lot 🌹🌹🌹
Thank YOU for sharing this information on { How to PROPERLY care for poinsettias }🌿😊💜
🎄🎅🎁❄⛄🎩🌿
This is just in time. I just received one as a gift.
I WAS interested in keeping mine around but you were right... way too much to do. lol
Interestingly, I have had one thriving on my patio here in Dallas since I got it. No freezing temps but it has gotten down to 35* a few times.
Thanks Laura! Was just gifted one and was wondering how to take care of it!! This is very helpful. 👍🏾😀
Awesome Video! I never realized that much care went into getting them to bloom again. Thank you!
