I have grown orchids for years, helpful hint with the medium, I soak mine in a bucket of water to moisten the bark, its hard to get it moistened enough to maintain the moisture. Remember these grow in rain forest. East window is their preference. I get mine to rebloom. These look beautiful!
Curious, I have mine in an orchid pot, one with openings. Which means many of the roots grow outside the pots. I don't love this look, but thought this kind of pot was required. Any thoughts?
Hi Laura and Aaron! I just wanted to pop on here and give a shout out to the new editor. He’s done a great job and I especially appreciate how he’s done the work of going back to find footage of visuals when you talk about past arrangements and areas of the property. He’s become a lot more consistent with that and throwing that in is a great addition. It wasn’t done much with videos before and I notice it more often now. So…thank you! Becky
@@dcalivas3764 I don’t see that drawing attention to changes and praising the difference being a criticism of Ken at all. It simply drawing attention to a new thing that is appreciated. Good morning! I work in an orchid nursery in southeast Louisiana. These are beautiful. We typically won’t repot them while in bloom because it may cause them to drop the flowers. It’s easier to leave them in their original pots until they are done blooming. They also love to be root bound. So increase pot size minimally. But, each home and growing area give different conditions, they’ll let you know in short order if they aren’t happy.
Yes. I was concerned also about the size of the pots Laura used and also the fact that Orchids do not like soggy soil and those pots look like they will hold to much moisture as the roots won't reach all of the soil to soak up the moisture fast enough.
Yes, I was also taught not to repot orchids while in bloom. It would have been easier to leave them in the nursery pot and just place them in the decorative pot, maybe taking the orchid out to water. Then you wouldn’t need to drill drainage holes. It’s a beautiful combo, though.
Oh I love the use of the logs in the centrepiece. It adds such a nice contrast to the foliage. I’ve grown orchids for 15 years and sometimes they fail if they have the death plug - it’s the compacted moss or media that some growers use for the roots to grow around. I’ve always had the best success in removing that plug and repotting as the plug can get too wet and rot. I also keep my orchids in clear orchid pots and slip them into decorative pots so I can easily check on the health of the roots and give them a drench if it’s particularly dry. Great suggestion for the new year and bringing some colour and blooms inside. ♥️
The ferns & orchids in the metal container have my whole heart right now!! It’s like a perfect little fairy hideaway & I’ve just gotten so inspired 🥰 Love it!!!
Another tidpit about orchids is their potted in clear containers so you can see the roots. When the roots are white they need a drink, after a drink they turn green, easy peasy so you don't over water. You can just leave them in clear pot and set it in a pretty container
Think like a plant. Orchids natural habitats are typically in tropical forests around the bases of trees and undergrowth where its shady (little to low light) and they live in semi moist (not wet) soil and they like being snuggled in. I was always afraid to grow orchids until I did my research and found they are super easy to maintain . The most important tips I can give anyone that wants to grow orchids is, make sure your orchid is located in indirect light (mine face south with a overhang so they get indirect lighting and I live in a fairly cloudy region of the US). They love being fertilized once a week with Orchid fertilizer (be sure to use orchid fertilizer) and be sure to use Orchid Mix soil. As for the root system never cut healthy looking roots...only cut roots that look old, shriveled and dried out, leave the healthy roots untouched. These tips are what I've done and mine bloom twice a year for me. I now have orchids that are over 10 years in age and they continue to delivery beautiful blossoms bi-annually. So, for the New Year 2025 get out there and get yourself an Orchid, and soon you will be hooked. Enjoy!
Thank you!!! Orchids are my favorite so I tend to receive them as gifts from time to time but the stress of not knowing how to tend to them is a beast 😅
9:15 am. Hi Laura, it's important to soak your orchid mix before potting up your orchids as the previous comment suggested. Also, I have had the same orchid for years & it is the same one as you have. They like bright indirect light. I set the whole container in a sink filled with room temperature water for 15 minutes once a week. Let it drain before placing it back on its saucer. (They don't like to sit in water). When it's in flower I feed it with orchid food twice a month. If the leaves get a bit dusty just wipe with a damp cloth to keep them looking their best. It will reward you for years to come! All the best to you & your family. ❤️
I just wanted to add that soaking your orchid mix and moss ahead of time is much appreciated by your orchids. Love your blue and white containers, perfect for these lovely orchids!
Your container planting is so pretty! The orchids really pop in it. It's nice you left them in their original pots, you could take them out and add something else if you wanted to. Love the kids getting their little peep hole check. They are so cute!
Laura, the container of ferns and orchids is spectacular. The wood helps by creating a rain forest feel. Lovely! I was holding my breath as you put drain holes in those lovely blue pots. You're very brave. The orchids you chose are very beautiful and perfect in those pots!
I’m interested to see how the orchid in the pots do… I’ve grown them for years and have always heard they like to have their roots constrained for optimal blooming. Please keep us posted.
I don’t cut mine off and they do re-bloom . Sometimes I can get 1 stalk to bloom 3 times before the stalk dies. The plant is still healthy after 6 years. I use diluted coffee occasionally to fertilize.
So true. I stopped cutting back my orchid stems bc I figured Mother Nature isn’t cutting stems back, why am I? I stopped and sure enough, I usually get another stem of blooms. 😊

Such gorgeous planters for the white phalaenopsis orchid (commonly referred to as moth orchid). Growing orchids has been one of my hobbies. Since they are epiphytic (grows on tree bark in nature; not soil), when replanting these orchids it is best to totally replace the old potting mixture to get rid of decayed planting material. Decayed material can add to water retention and decay of the outer velamen structure of the root. Hope this helps.
Laura, I have been watching you 2020. I love how genuinely excited you are about gardening in general. thank you for all you do, especially during the winter months.

Hi Laura, when the orchid blooms die don't cut the stalk all the way down to the bottom. Cut it just below the first dead flower. Most times, another bloom stalk will emerge from one of the nodes below of the original bloom . Water once or twice a week, orchids don't like wet roots. Also, make sure you don't get water in the top center of the plant. Water pooling in this section will also cause rotting. Good luck!!!
Ive had several orchards for three years now,and still don’t have them figured out. But they’re absolutely a beautiful plant. I guess they like where I have them because they keep growing.
They are very easy to maintain! I put some kind of moss to maintain humidity and I put them out their plastic jail in an ordinary long pot like the one Laura uses. Special ground full of tree bark...I have them since 5 years and they bloom 3 times a year....By the way they love garlic! I put one garlic (bio) clove near the plants ...Leave all the roots go their own way, cut only when damaged..
Sometimes it’s best to plant an orchid in a clear plastic inner pot with vertical slits all around . Fill the pot with an orchid mixture. They do sell plastic pots pre slit. Then place the pot in an outer larger pot. Orchids roots need air. so when watering take the plastic pot out and water in a sink and let any excess water drain out and put it back in the ceramic or terra cotta pot. This way you can fell and see if it needs more water and see how the roots are doing

Miss Laura I just watched a video on UA-cam about bringing orchids back to life. They used 3 tablespoons of rice soaked in 1 L of water overnight. Strain the rice from the water and water your orchid every 10 days with it. They also used moss as their medium. When watering they put the pot inside of another pot to catch the liquid and ran the water through the moss to water the plant. The rice is a fertilizer because of the nutrients in it also the starch I would assume the moss has benefits New York as well. If we could post links I would do it here but I know UA-cam doesn’t like that . After a month to three months, the plant grew new leaves new roots and also new flowers. This video has encouraged me to try growing orchids. I know you’re busy life you may not have the time for this. however, it may help someone else with their orchids. Best of luck with yours. If you wanna look for the video it’s called… (this orchid hasn’t grown in six months until I did this)
I have been working on a new shady spot in my garden, zone 9b, and this is exactly what it looks like! Fern, orchids and driftwood! Validates my choices that you did this as a centerpiece. Thanks Laura!
Alongside your kitchen sink is a perfect place for your Phalaenopsis. They will love the moisture and light. Your fern "runner" on the dining table is magical.
I had the same itch on Sunday. Went and purchased a new ZZ plant, a lemon button fern, a birds nest fern, and a sweet little haworthia on clearance because it had a little piece broken off. We must grow all the things! Even in winter when the outside is resting. ❤
I love the long container on your dining room table, however, the white orchids in the blue pots are absolutely stunning! I hope they do well by your sink so you can see them multiple times a day!
So pretty. I love watching you putting arrangements together... I have been told that my flowers and floral arrangements are pretty. I am having a new gardening shed built next spring and I can't wait to get my hands in the dirt!!!! You have inspired me so much.
after years of trying to grow orchids...at last...they are thriving and I have lots of flower stems coming up. I use a 2 gal plastic pail have full of warmish water with tiny bit of orchid food each time...bring each plant to sink pour this water over leaves first and then thru pot several times saving water in pail. It is a little more work but wow what a difference. I have moss mulch on top of each pot which hold in moisture up to 2 weeks.
This arrangement reminds me of Peggy’s property when you went to visit her home. She has the bronze Winnie the Pooh bear in her garden. They are very elegant, the white and blue containers with white orchid just beautiful and elegant
Dear Laura, your orchid arrangement is beautiful as so many other arrangements that you put together. As an orchid lover and grower for 12 years, here are my comments for the best experience. Use Orchiaetta bark only as medium; orchids out of nursery comes with moss plugs which must be removed completely when repotted. Keep them in slotted clear plastic pot even in an arrangement. Orchids roots must have air circulating around them all the time. Feed them with MSU every other watering. Watch them re-bloom for years to come. They keep their leaves too.
thank you for another great video! A tip for reducing the chipping and jagged edges… place a block of wood on the other side of the drillbit. in this case inside the vase. that way when it finally goes through there is support as the bit moves into the wood beneath. this prevents the the chipping and tearing of the material you are drilling through and you do not have to worry about losing control of the heavy drill punching down as you get through the ceramic, glass or metal. you will be able to tell when you are through. the drill will cut through the wood with more ease and you will feel the difference. I look forward to have next for us!! Happy new year.
With orchids I always leave the plant in the orchid plastic pot, as it is best for the plant. Then, weekly, i pull out the plant and pot from the decorative container and soak it for 10 mins in a pot of cool water. Once the roots are saturated enough they will go from grey to green. The roots do not respond well to being potted in a decorative pot and being watered overhead...
Those are beautiful in the ceramic planters! Cobalt blue has always been one of my favorite colors. And the metal centerpiece planter that you made is stunning!
Great job drilling those holes in the blue and white pots, I have been wanting to learn how to do this. I noticed when you placed them at your kitchen window that when you remove the lilac you are going to have a fantastic view of the hartley! :)
I have never played with orchids just because i think they are too hard to grow! It will be fun to see how they do in your dry climate and indoors. The ferns are gorgeous too! Happy growing!
This was an inspiration to try live plants on my kitchen table. I wondered about not getting direct sunlight, I have bright light, so hopefully they will survive😊
Beautiful arrangements! Personally I would never drill the holes and use containers as cache pots. That makes it easier to switch out plants and you do not have to worry about water drainage.
That’s what I love about gardening, is that there are Soo many different ways of doing everything. What works for some doesn’t work for others. I’m so excited to see what those do in those beautiful ceramic pots..
Beautiful arrangement and potted orchids. I plan to try out a dining table arrangement. I was given smaller orchids, which I set on my window over the kitchen sink. They have been blooming for 5 years. I agree with you ... orchids are gorgeous.
I put my "pots to be drilled" on a kneeling pad as their soft surface. I use water also. Drilling at an angle to start is something I'll try next time. I'm glad it all worked out for you!

Your Greenhouse is perfect for orchids!!! I’m an orchid hobbyist and you did everything right!!! In addition to the new medium I usually include a sprinkle of slow release fertilizer. Well done!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✨
Tip for next time you need to plug drain holes...buy a plastic plug (or save them from pots when they come with them) and drill your hole to the size of the plug you need. Then you can take them out or put them in depending on if you want drain holes or not. Also, when drilling the ceramic container, make sure you clean out the diamond bit so the piece has somewhere to go when you drill. I couldn't tell if your bit was clean. I have chipped the inside of the hole due to the little piece not being able to go in the bit hole.
I love orchids. They prefer the humidity and in a window they need the light. Mine are small and I have them in my bathroom and it gets the morning to early afternoon sun
You are so good at creating excitement or expectation! I was so nervous for you while cutting the drainage holes! Beautiful arrangements and great video!
Gorgeous!!!! One bit of advice...phalaenopsis orchids almost prefer to be root-bound...yours are now a bit overpotted.. careful with water. Eastern Window would be best. You can set the pots in gravel lined pans. Keep water away from the pots though.
I have multiple species of orchids (Phaleonopsis, Dendrobium, Oncidiums, Tulumnia, Paphelopedlum, and Vandacious types). I keep mine in lava rock to prevent overwatering. I water when roots turn from green to silver. They LOVE Epsom salt when being fertilized. I’m also a sucker for a large white Phal. Curious to see how well your arrangement does. Both my orchids and ferns love sunshine, East facing window.
Thank you Laura for the beautiful inspiration for the dining room table. I have the perfect oval container to do the same when I pack up Christmas decor. I have a question not really related to this video, (been watching past videos) lol have you guys ever thought about when the Kio lay eggs maybe saving some by putting them in the pool inside the greenhouse? I was thinking it would be so cool to watch the kido's see them hatch and grow enough to put back into the pond. :)❤
Was holding my breath when you were drilling drain holes in those gorgeous containers! All the plants look amazing in their new planters. I must try and get some ferns and grow them in my low light house!❤
Will you please make a moss / dried flower picture? In Hobby Lobby, I saw beautiful dried moss that was green, brown, & purple. Love watching you create masterpieces.
I've been growing Phal orchids for 10 years and their roots need air. In humid warm climates their roots grow on tree trunks and branches and receive moisture from rain. Do not repot in soil or put their pot in soil. The soil will retain too much moisture and roots will suffocate and rot. Also, make sure no water is allowed to stand in the crown of leaves. If the top newer leaves turn yellow then rot has set in. Older leaves at the bottom will turn yellow and will dry and drop off. That's the natural way Phals lose old leaves. Also, cinnamon works well in preventing any rot when dabbed at point where cut is made when cutting off stems, and on cuts made at base of old leaves if cutting them off before they completely dry and drop off. Ok, this was a lot. Glad to see you've added orchids to your gardening community.
Just wish to tell you that those beautiful earns ( pots) I always pot my plants into a plastic pot the right size to insert into the ceramic pots if you didn’t wish to chance cracking them but everyone is different thank you for this video Laura 🙌 gorgeous displays from the land down under 🇦🇺
Absolutely beautiful!! Love the orchids and blue pots by the sink. They frame the view so beautifully. I don't remember ever seeing the view from that window. I love the idea of a kitchen garden out there. How appropriate. And the ferns on the dining table are stunning. Great start to the new year.
Love the arrangements. Hope the orchids thrive for you. (I thought you were supposed to soak the orchid mix but you probably did.) This was peaceful end of the day for me today. Thank you. Have a blessed day everyone.
I use only distilled water for the orchids. Dissolved minerals in tap water, particularly hard water from high pH well water, coat the roots and then the roots die. Using distilled water in a mister in the morning on a daily routine is helpful to keep the orchids really nice for a month or more, just don’t mist the flowers. Good luck.
I live in NC so we have plenty of humidity during the Summer months. To mimic that I put my orchids in our master bathroom which has tons of bright light and humidity. Orchids DO need BRIGHT light if indoors. Mine love it. During the frost free months I hang them outside in the shade in my trees. Orchids need air circulation around their roots as well. Also you DONT want to clip the bloom stalks back unless they are dead (all brown) My orchids always rebloom on old stalks that have remained green.
I have grown orchids for years, helpful hint with the medium, I soak mine in a bucket of water to moisten the bark, its hard to get it moistened enough to maintain the moisture. Remember these grow in rain forest. East window is their preference. I get mine to rebloom. These look beautiful!
Do you feed them? I’ve had sporadic reblooming on orchids but they usually don’t have as many blooms as they had at first.
I used to soak my bark before repotting as well. Now I grow in leca and semi hydro. But, yes, pre soaking was my thing as well.
Curious, I have mine in an orchid pot, one with openings. Which means many of the roots grow outside the pots. I don't love this look, but thought this kind of pot was required. Any thoughts?
I do too.
Good to know! I have never had great success with orchids but love them so appreciate any helpful information on having them thrive! ~Cassandra

Beautiful projects today. The piano music was so soothing and calming. I'm wondering if it's you, Laura, playing. So wonderful.
Good morning all have a safe and blessed day❤
Oh the blue and white with the orchids is 😍😍😍😍😍
I love the long container on your dining room table, however, the white orchids in the blue pots are absolutely stunning!
Loved them all, so glad you showed the garbage bag tick again, because I forgot about it from last time. Beautiful!
I'm from Singapore & orchids are our national flowers. Love & love watching all your videos!!
You must have lots of tips to help keep orchids healthy and alive! Please share! Ty. 😊♥️
I love the orchards in the kitchen. They add such peace and simplicity to the sink area. Good job!
Please keep us updated on the Orchids. I've never grown one but you've sparked my interest. The long one with ferns is gorgous also.
after years of trying to grow orchids...at last...they are thriving and I have lots of flower stems coming up.
Gorgeous table arrangement planter!❤
Those orchids have to survive since you gave them such a beautiful home!
All three containers are absolutely stunning! I would love to have something like those in my home. Well done!
Beautiful arrangements beautiful choice of flowers 🌸💮💞
I’m feeling truly inspired.
Can you provide additional insights about the bi-weekly subject you mentioned?
I raised 184k and Anna Kathleen Sanford is to be thanked. I got my self my dream car just last weekend, My journey with her started after my best friend came back from New York and saw me suffering in dept then told me about her and how to change my life through her. Anna K. Sanford is the kind of person one needs in his or her life! I got a home, a good wife, and a beautiful daughter. Note!:: this is not a promotion but me trying to make a point that no matter what happens, always have faith and keep living!!!!!
Whoa 😲 I know her too!
Miss Anna Kathleen Sanford is an incredible person who has brought immense inspiration and positivity into my life.
I meagerly kicked off with $2k, and the results have been Jaw-dropping TBH!!!
That fern centerpiece is absolutely gorgeous. The arrangements that you put together are just amazing, and your talents are endless.😊
The orchids in the ceramic pots are beautiful. So classic. Flowering plants in January has got to be the best.
I have my orchid in a white ceramic that has holes. It loves it. Think it likes airflow. I also spray my leaves with a orchid fertilizer
Wow Laura! The table arrangement turned out just gorgeous! I learn so much from you!
Beautiful orchids! Your creativity continues to amaze me!
Happy New Year!
I love orchids. They prefer the humidity and in a window they need the light. Mine are small and I have them in my bathroom and it gets the morning to early afternoon sun
Benjamin’s positive comments were great.😁💗
You are so good at creating excitement or expectation!
The flower pots the blue ones look very beautiful Benjamin and Samantha Grace look very happy God bless you and your family😊😊
I haven’t tried orchids. They are so pretty especially with the ferns.
We are on same wave length. I bought an orchid and a tropical miniature palm plant to go by my aquascape bowl which I love!
Will you please make a moss / dried flower picture? In Hobby Lobby, I saw beautiful dried moss that was green, brown, & purple. Love watching you create masterpieces.
Great job Laura. Good to see Samantha Grace and Benjamin interested in your project.
I absolutely love this arrangement.
So beautiful Laura! Love the kiddos being involved! Happy New Year to you, Arron and All!🌸
Love the arrangements.
Good luck.
Orchids are lovely in the kitchen.
Love the view from the kitchen window.
Need a “tour” of window views, what y’all see looking out into your gardens.
Oh yes, that would be awesome! 😃
