I have had my plant for several years it is still red in May and producing red leaves. I never cut it way back it is huge and bushy in a window with light coming in. I never put it in the dark but of course in winter here in Canada it is dark, The room gets cold in the winter but not freezing and it is beautiful.
I’ve kept mine alive from last year, with really no issues, though I find they need a lot of water, otherwise they tend to droop. I also researched how to get them to bloom again, but that 16 hrs of nighttime kind of threw me 😔 way more commitment than I was expecting. I actually find the normal leaves beautiful even without the colored ones. The soft velvety leaves have a ethereal quality all by themselves 🥰
Can't say fairer than that 😁
I agree, mine is so dramatic if not watered regularly, but also does not like wet feet. I have found that putting it in a pot with a gap and then a water reservoir and having the roots grow into the reservoir helps. this keeps the soil less moist but gives the plant constant access to water. I think an easier way to do the photo period thing is to put it in a dark closet with a grow light on a timer. There is no way I will remember to put the plant in and out of the dark spot at the same time every day.
@@mirar8356 nice tip with the grow light thanks
HI, I'm a 3 yr resident of Central florida now. Everything grows so differently down here. It's a whole new growing plants, trees, flowers world down here. I here for it to!😅3 Feb ago in Our new neighbors told us to plant them outside & they will grow. I did it because love that my yard is full if flowers in the winter & No snow. To my pleasant surprise, they grew. No lie, 2 of my P plants have grown 8'-10' tall. It's very unusual, unique & beautiful in a whole different way then I've seen them grow in all of my 63 yrs. It's fun. I don't know why 2 grew so tall & 3 grew short & bushy. Then, when the temps drop to below 50° in Feb, the plants start to brown. Cut down in late March. They start to come back to life in April..
*☆★.*** I bought 2 white poinsettias & 1 red in Nov of 23.
Now, June 8, 2024, I left these in their pots. my 2 white P went green around Feb.😂 My red one is still blooming red in June. This is another new thing for me. The poinsettia has thinned out some & the red is not as vibrant. Same Neighbors told me yesterday that I should trim it half the size. Keel it outside in shaded area away from afternoon sun. They said it will put out new growth & bloom red again at Thanksgiving & Christmas time. It kinda freaks me out to cut it back so much. You suggested cutting it back to. Is it to late to cut back? Should I give it fresh soil when I cut it back? Im here to find some advice from a professional. I sure hope you will see this and answer my question 😊 What do you think of my tall skinny poinsettia & them all coming back to life after a month or 2 looking dead? I am facilitated & curious about them.
Lord! What did I get myself into!
I am happy to support poinsettia growers who do this meticulous work! That said, I have a border of poinsettias in an east-facing wall that look great, even when all green. Love the velvety look.
Sounds lovely
I never changed the lighting and mine blooms.
hahahaha.I volunteered to take one from an office Christmas party. It's May in the states and it is still alive, but it's amazing to hear how complicated this particular plant is. We'll see if I can get it to live until next winter.
Hopefully it will 🤞
@@SheffieldMadePlants I repotted it on Saturday and notices the roots were wet, but not soggy. Followed your technique of pruning it, and I just took a closer look and there are tiny little leaves starting to form!
If this one doesn't make it, I will at least have some practice next year's old poinsettias! Thanks for the video and the reply. Life-affirming to learn the odd nuances of this very familiar "holiday" plant.
I'm so happy that I've managed to keep mine from last year for the first time. As usual all the leaves eventually dropped off after Christmas, however I decided to put it in a south facing window sill to give it a chance and there it's stayed, growing new leaves and now turning red again! I water when it looks a bit droopy but it seems to like it there 😀
That's great! So you've not kept it in the dark?
@@SheffieldMadePlants no I've just left it doing it's own thing. I think it's enjoys the sunshine, the plants I've seen growing in Tenerife always look great.
I have three small Poinsettia, and just this minute, I plunged them into darkness for their first 16-hour nap. They will spend their 8-hour waketime every day under my grow lights. Here we go! 🤞
Love it!
Third time is the charm for me. The first 2x I tried to keep my poinsettias, I kept them in a dark place and barely watered them. They are a tropical plant, so they hate that and they died. My current plant is doing great. It lives in my bright sunny sunroom and I water it weekly. I re-potted it and pruned it in April and put rocks at the top of the soil. It is about 74-77F degrees in my house most of the time. My plant is super leafy and happy right now. I may have to put it in my den at night in the winter so the red leaves grow (but not in a closet 24/7 like some people recommend in videos). I can't wait to see how it looks this Christmas.
Hoepfully it goes red! Fingers crossed for you
**please explain why my plant is so unique** we live in NJ, it's incredibly hot n humid in summer and frigid in winter... I have had the same poinsettia for 6years! It keeps red leaves year round, and I do not treat it any different than any other plant. I've never had to take it away from its sunny window to force it to change color... only problem I've had with her was Xanthomonas leaf spot and I did not kill it or take away from its family, I took the time to save her... I'm sorry to say that my plant has NEVER EVER been put in darkness & she just keeps growing red... I can take a pic of her right now (May/June '24) and she is red! 😂😁
Same here, still blooming red flowers, and it is June 2024!
Mine is a combination of 5 different gift plants from 5 different Christmases, each transplanted into the same pot where it has been for about 10 years - it spends its life behind my house receiving afternoon westerly full sunshine in this Deep South zone 8A summer heat. It has never been in a dark area - there is a street light nearby. I only bring it inside when there is risk of a freeze so I know it tolerates cold down to around 40*F. It receives the same watering/fertilizers (I do have it sitting in a drain pan so the water does not all run out) as do my other garden plants. The only “pruning” done was to remove dead or weak branches so it is 5’3” tall and fully blossomed.
Why has one become so beautiful and big without all this meticulous effort! I think sometimes we over-do and complicate things. Transplant into a larger pot, water, fertilizer, outside summer heat is all it took.
So yours go red come winter?
@@SheffieldMadePlants Oh yes! And it’s gorgeous! I can’t figure out how to post a picture to show you.
@@Southern-Mama I’m on insta
Wow I didn't even know they could get that big.
I have successfully kept mine alive and quite healthy looking since last Christmas although the red has virtually disappeared. Am having trouble working out the schedule for an Australian Christmas though!
Goodness this sounds complicated. I don't buy them now it seems cruel as they are doomed in my house. Thanks for the info.
You bet!
I love poinsettia plants and mine do last until spring without much attention. I had no idea I could make them flower again so thanks 🙏 for your helpful video. It’s definitely a commitment though 😮
Gonna give it a try? 😄
@@SheffieldMadePlants may well do so!
That's a lot of work! Guess pointsettias will remain a seasonal plant for me.
Fair enough 😂
I did manage to keep mine alive knowing none of that for over a year now. The boring part is that is plain green all over, no red leaves nor flowers. For this year I’ll brace myself and go along the saga towards red racks for Christmas 2024!
Challenge Accepted! I just killed one after 3 days from buying it...:D I didn't know about keeping it warm in transport. I wish you all good luck!
Good luck 😁👍
Aw man! Wish I’d known about you sooner, I missed the chance to cut back, but I’m going to set a timer on my phone for Etta and see how she responds to consistent naps, kudos Mr Sheffield
Blessings 💚💜
Thanks!
I grew one outside in Bellingen, Australia. It is subtropical, and rains in summer and is cold in winter. The 16 hours of darkness, never happened but it did have red leaves in the Spring.
Oh nice!
I made mine live for over a year now and it’s literally so sturdy. It got full sun in summer and moved with me. Now it’s in a dark, colder kitchen and it’s still going strong, maybe a little sadder looking. Idk I didn’t even try to keep it alive, it just did 🤨
Good job!
@@SheffieldMadePlants nvm it died ...
The only way your plants will grow this winter 👉ua-cam.com/video/o-jGUwvHfOo/v-deo.html
Thank you for sharing this information. Probably won’t be trying to save mine after seeing your video.
😅
Great info thanks 🌸
My pleasure 😊
I got very curious after this video, and saw a small one in the store for _3 euros_ so I just had to see how badly it dies. For starters I put it in my backpack and it was -3°C outside when I walked home, secondly there's next to no light this time of the year. For a plant that wants complete darkness at some point, the requirement to have a lot of light in the christmas time is what I'd call picky. But given that it lives in the opposite side of the world, it's fair. It had dry soil and I was just about to water it when I remembered this video and double checked that it wants dryness.
Are you in Scandinavia? You might have told me before but im forgetful 🤪 Sounds like a harsh winter where you are for sure!
Thanks for the info ❤❤
You bet!
Mine died twice but miraculously revived again, I have it since last November.
But it didn't get the red leaves anymore.
Thanks for the video!
You bet!
Thank you sweetie ❤
Just got one last night 🌙 thanks for this video 🙂
You bet! 😁
Wow! Great info, I now understand why they sell these things every year 😅. Still, going to try and keep my 2 alive. So far they drop leaves like crazy if I don’t water. Seems like they are the huskies of the plant world.
You can do it! 😁
This video gave me hope not to throw it away because it is the second year I have had this plant at home. Somehow magically survived, (without knowing I moved it to the balcony under a shade during summer) and I'll try to move it somewhere dark in September when this winter will end. I wish I had known this tip last year, so I can care for it properly. Thanks a lot for this tip!
Glad it was useful. Thanks for watching 😁
I’m going to try to keep mine alive. Right now she is doing great. I sing to her every morning and now will make sure to give her more Sun. Looks like I was doing everything right except for the indirect Sunlight for 6 hours part.
Christmas songs?
I still have mine from last Christmas it all green now.
Still a good effort 👍
It's always interesting to read the title and see what plant it is about. In Finland Poinsettia is called "Christmas star". I suppose it's a fitting name. And there's no way to follow this guide without specifically planning for such circumstances over here :D I assume this one is the showcase of the skill of a gardener.
Yeah I wanted to show the crazy care needed for this plant
In Spanish it’s “Christmas Eve Flower.”
Nice instructional video. Thank you for sharing. I still have two plants in mid-February. I'd be ready to cut them down in preparation for a new cycle but they have very little to no leaves at the bottom. What should I do about this? Thanks in advance for any help.
I’d go to the lowest leaf and go from there
😂😂😂
What a nightmare! I think I’ll buy a new one next Christmas.
I know right!
I just told my husband this morning "I think I'm going to get a poinsettia this year"
...nevermind 🤣
🤣😂
I put them outside in spring they grown well and tall
Mines died of cold can’t afford heating so forget it I just buy one close to Christmas !
Here to learn.

:( my mum got gifted one and it pretty much died straight away - not sure who told my mum this but she was told that poinsettias love the cold (i guess it's a common myth from it being associated with christmas) and that's why the petals were curling up. Definitely want to try when they come back in stock - I haven't seen them anywhere in shops after Christmas.
Yep the cold will kill it for sure. You never see them after Xmas 🤷🏻♂️
I have one for few years now, they keep flowers for a long time but very small, I don't mind because at least have some red colour
That's good going!
What's even more difficult with these dang plants is trying to make them bloom for Christmas in SUMMER. Plant sellers here in Aus grow poinsettias in such ludacris conditions opposite to the actual seasons to force Winter growth in the height of Summer. Then you buy the plant and bring it home and all the leaves fall off within a week. :))
I managed to keep my poinsettia alive after Christmas and halfway through this year until it randomly died. They're not available in nurseries here yet but I'm gonna try again this year to keep one alive for as long as I can.
I heard that the nursery use black plastic bag to cove the plant, so we can have them during Christmas in summer.
Didn't even think about that!
The Beautiful But Highly Complicated Poinsetta😳🥺🤭
I know right!
My fiancé brought one home from work that’s about four feet tall 😭 Going to try to keep it alive as long as possible with my limited window space
Mr. Richard, I found it! LOL! I follow a lot of plant UA-cam Channels and I wasn’t quite sure who posted about Poinsettias:-).
I just rewatched your video with much more attention than I watched it before I purchased a poinsettia a few days ago. And all I can say is WOWZERS! You shared a LOT of great information!!
You are not kidding when you warned us that it involves a LOT of steps, but I am up for the challenge! It feels like I am back in school doing a science experiment!🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for mentioning the Kalanchoe, as well. I have had one of those for a year and wondered why it did not give me any flowers when I put it outside on the patio this summer. LOL!😂🤦♀️
I am not going to wait to congratulate myself after my Poinsettia is still alive in March. LOL! I am going to use my mother’s homemade Eggnog 🥛recipe and reward myself just for even taking on your “Keep-Your-Poinsettia-Alive” Challenge! LOL! 😂
Thanks again for a great UA-cam Channel and another great feature, Sir Richard! Blessings to your family!🎄
Thanks! Glad you've accepted the challenge 🤣 I like the sound of that eggnog for sure 😁 I tried doing the same to my Kalanchoe last year but I started too late.
@writegirl2937 hello here reading comments, did your poinsettia survive the summer, how’s it doing?
Blessings 💜💚
@@gailtalley8037 Hello, and thanks for reaching out. To my BIG surprise, that thing is still going!! I don’t even know how!🤣
So, I was too lazy to keep it in a dark cupboard as some articles suggested. Instead, I simply plopped it (in its original plastic pot) on top of my raised garden bed. In addition to the rain water, it basically got watered whenever I watered the other things in the garden bed. (I honestly didn’t care if it survived or not because I only paid $2.00 for it. 🤣
Anyway, it has kept its green foliage throughout the summer eventhough it was in full sun every day! 🤷🏽♀️
The real test is whether it will give me red blooms in December!
If you remind me to update you guys during the Christmas season, I will be glad to do that!😊
Be well.🪴
@@writegirl2937 😆😆😆 I feel you on being too lazy to do the dark thing, I’ve been doing it approx a month and I’m about ready to stop But hopefully I won’t I’m like you glad its still alive.
Happy for you that yours made it through, Here’s to another year for our plants ☕️ I don’t drink so 😯😆😆

@@gailtalley8037 LOL! Anything but liquor works for me, too!🤣 🫖🪴
Thanks for pointing out why my poinsettias always do so well and then mid-to-late summer tend to be put on plant hospice. My home is WAY too hot for the poor things.
Glad it was helpful 👍
Mine is too cold. It gets really cold in winter. We can wear jumpers but she can't!
For the first time ever my last year’s poinsettia survived the whole year and is still growing vigorously. No idea why. It’s been in a spot no other houseplant has ever survived and it’s been there for the full 12 months. North facing windowsill next to kitchen sink. Small outdoor air vent above it open all year except when outdoor temperature is at freezing or below. It was repotted in the summer, but hasn’t had any plant food. Just a little water when completely dry. It’s getting red bracks even though it doesn’t have total darkness for 16 hours.
You’re doing something right! 😁
@@SheffieldMadePlantsno idea what. My Mum had the greenest of green fingers, could plant a stick and it would grow. But she was never able to keep a poinsettia alive. I will prune it in a couple of months as it's getting rather too big for the windowsill. It will be interesting to see if it survives that.
I learned this January to get rid of the aluminum foil wrap and place it in a saucer, water it from the bottom. It was so happy after I did this, and it is in a northwest window. Can you just put a box over it for the 16 hours?
A box should work actually 👍
Oh dear, this video found me just in time. I rescued one from the trash and kinda don't know what to do with it bc it was in a pretty bad shape. Let's hope it doesn't die on me.
Fingers crossed 🤞
Thank you for this video. Pacific Northwest here and we have one still looking snappy and happy in May. It continues to sprout new leaves and I don't have the heart to chop it back now. 😟 Could i start doing the things in October and have any chance of getting color?
Might be too late
I kept one for years by putting it outside in direct sun over summer ( St.Louis, U S A). No blooms, though.
Needs those dark hours
I’ve kept mine for over a year and is turning into a bush
Mine dropped leafs and just had the top ones left so in an experiment I cut them down and it started growing again. 😂
Nice!
The Ideal way too keep a poinsettia for the rest of a year, is to buy it on 30 December.
😂
What a faff! How come outside euphorbias colour beautifully every summer, just growing in the borders? I will still buy one though, like every year! Might even try the performance with a small plant . . .
Might be fun 😅
Hello! I just saw this video. I am wondering if I should cut it back to 5". It made it to June. It still has some leaves from when I bought it and new ones.
Might be a bit late now. New growth should be well on its way
Hi hi Mr Sheffield dont know yr name how do i get mine to turn red in Trinidad we have sunshine for 8 mnths a year do I store it away from light as well? We in Trinidad have poinsettia trees in our yards growing as well but only the top bracs turn red but i really wld like to try yr suggestion . We here have pink and white and red poinsettias as well. So help if you can thanks i really love the red best. Stay well be safe and God bless yr channel
It needs to think it's winter so give it a try. It's a challenge but might be fun 😅
Oh nice with this I might have success let's watch.
Me after this video: oh well.. :(
Very interesting to know though. I didn't knew a lot of these things. Especially the requirements for blooming. We had one every Christmas but a few years a go stopped buying them completely because they die anyway. Would be so cool to keep one alive and let it bloom but this is a lot of work and I can't really offer the right temperature and light/darkness.
I know it's crazy right! What an achievement it would be...
In march when you repot them, where should we keep them ? Inside outside? Shade full light?
Somewhere with good light
Idk how true this is mine started turning red on its own with an artificial grow light I live in Ohio lol
Hi. I live in australia (victoria). I find your instructions confusing, should I do this all in reverse? since my seasons are opposite ?? 😅 thanks!
Yes do it the other way around
I'm going to try this. We'll see how long it lasts before I give up 😜
I know right!
The easiest way you can have a beautiful red poinsettia every year….throw away the old one and buy a new one! 😂😂
Potentially 😅
I have had my plant for nearly two years it needs reporting and pruning its September in UK should I do it now in not worried about it turning red for Christmas
Yes if it needs it. Got nothing to lose
lol , i know of that blackout , but i dont know how people keep up with it , i rather it stay alive and green , and yea its growing in a tropical climate
It's a challenge for sure!
What is the orange plant that he referred to??
How do growers get the 16 hrs a day darkness in a green house?
Hi I do not have sunlight in my place can putting a lamp on the plant help maintain it alive?
Yes a lamp should work
Well i stupidly put mine outside and its got root rot i think the roots are just falling apsrt in my hands. I have soaked it with hydrogen peroxide and removed tthe swusihy roots. Its only got a few leaves left on top. It was in a very tightly bound pot which didnt help.
I have mine for 5 years is in my garden and gets red starting middle of december
Cool. Where do you live?
What? Mexico has cold climate in various parts of the country. Perhaps in the area where these plants grow but Mexico definitely has a lot of snow cold areas!
Sadly people don't have knowledge of how vast amd varied Mexico really is. Gorgeous country.
It’s April and mine looks so great and it’s growing new red leaves also the little buds that are on top have excreted clear sweet liquid out of the yellow part of the bud … what is this?
That is awesome!
All I have ever done is water it once a week and I have a damn tree 😂
😁
Have you ever repotted yours?
@gailtalley8037 yes, I got it from Home Depot or Lowes a in one of those green pots. When it got too big I planted it in a huge pot I had because that's all I had and it still took over lol. I just cut it all back for the first time ever because it hot so woody. Hope I didn't kill it completely, it only has one limb with leaves coming back out.

Help! My 2 poinsettias were doing really well. Stupidly I put them in the hall.Too cold. Back inside after 48 hours. They felt dry so l watered them alot. Probably too much. 1 is doing well, a few brackets are brown and curled at the edges, but the overall look is healthy. The other one is completely drooping. Red and green leaves. Is there anything l can do to save it?? Should l repot it??
Thank you for your help.
Sounds like it’s suffering from cold shock. I’d only repot if it needs it and keep it in a nice bright warm spot and see if it bounces back with spring coming. It might end up being a lesson learned though unfortunately
I appreciate the ❤️ but do you have any advice??? Other than crossing my fingers for the next few days and hoping for the best??
The soil is quite moist but the leaves aren't yellow or soft. So more water would be a bad thing. Both plants are in a warm, kitchen with indirect sun all day.
@@c.a.savage5689 it’s suffering from shock probably and there’s not much you can apart from put it in a spot it likes. Only water if the soil is dry. You can feed in the spring

So, I don't get it. If this plant is native to Mexico, how is it that it requires all of this complete darkness and perfect 15C/60F weather? I just don't see it getting that while growing in Mexico.

OR, you're my dad, with a house that has so many windows it's practically a greenhouse, and place the plant where it looks nice (which happens to be indirect light til sunset, in the place that is not too hot in the house), forget about watering it, cut the dead leaves, and end up keeping it for over 5 years LOL
In the end, because of the way the "trunk" twisted and turned, and the places where the leaves would bloom, it looked like a flamingo haha

Why? Our cat won’t quit messing ours up! 😅😂❤
They aren't poisonous to animals if they nibble on the leaves a little but if they completely eat too many leaves then it can be deadly
