    Great replenishment haul! I would like to point out that the dates listed on most foods are not, in fact, "expiration dates" but rather "best by" dates. Canned goods, when stored properly and without damage can last well past the printed dates and may be good indefinitely. The dates just mean quality and nutrition are guaranteed by the manufacturers until this date. It is a quality control regulation, not an expiry. I think too many people throw away perfectly good food based on this misconception.

    • @joyfullythriving
      @joyfullythriving  7 місяців тому +4

      Yes! I agree completely! Thank you for that reminder and pointing that out. You can definitely eat food past the best by date, and I think we need to remind people of this fact, so thanks for helping do that!

    At the beginning, you said something about “food as an investment”. That’s exactly how I look at it. Except for perishable, with my pantry and my 3.2 cf freezer and the small freezer in the fridge, I figure I could get by for a year if I had to. I might not be eating what I really love, and maybe eating more dried beans than I prefer, but I definitely would not starve. I’ve been stockpiling for a while, realizing prices were escalating rapidly.
    I did a Walmart stockpile visit about 2 weeks ago. And with a $100 budget! LOL I got lots of different pastas, including about 4 pounds of spaghetti noodles. Several cans of diced tomatoes (boy! Those prices have increased!), 3 of the 40 oz cans of Great Value coffee which, by the way, has recently gone from 48 oz cans to 40 oz cans for same price. Some canned corn and green beans, cooking oil, 2 80-oz bags of rice (giving me a total of almost 25 pounds of rice, tea bags, canned beans. I already had about 15 pounds of dried beans, peas, lentils.
    I’m a senior on a fixed income. Stockpiling for shortages is good but mainly, I’ve done it because I’m “investing in my food”. Enjoyed your video!

      I went to more canned stuff than in my freezer...electric...the grids. If...if we ever were invaded etc. first thing to go would be electricity. Why ? Knock all communications, all computers, and so on also meaning every home across America...all the meats in the freezers, well, you know what would happen. (I also went for bottled water, deod. and soap, and shampoo.) My pet foods ? Canned and dry, and plenty of kitty litter, and yes the treats as well lol.

      @@cierakitty Totally agree on the canned food idea. Me, too. My little freezer is only 3.2 cf - perfect for just me - but I use that food (meat/frozen vegetables) on a regular basis while "saving" my pantry items. I'm just now getting extra non-food things you mentioned.

    I wanted to add one more thing as it might be helpful to others and especially others like me. Seniors. You know...our memories aren't always that great! 🤣👵 I keep a list of all items - one for panty, one for freezers. Ex: kidney beans: 10 cans. Or today I froze chicken thighs so Chicken thighs - 2/pkg 10/17/23. As I use something, it gets scratched from the list.
    That way, I can tell at a glance what I have and nothing gets "lost". Also, I'm not a busy mom like most of you so I go ahead and add expiration dates on canned things. I have more time than most of you. Hope that helps someone.

    $1.50 for a can of peaches. Wow! That’s seems insane to me. That’s about the only canned fruit I keep on hand except pineapple but the canned pineapple hasn’t been tasting good to me so I haven’t been buying it. It’s funny how what I “stock pile” changes as the kids get older. I don’t know the last time I used oatmeal and I used to buy it often. Crazy. You did a great job for $100! Awesome!

      We just put in peach trees last year, I wasn’t expecting a harvest this year but we got a 5 gallon bucket approximately off of each tree! They were the sweetest, most delicious peaches I’ve ever tasted. If you have a yard and space for trees fruit trees are the gift that keeps on giving.

    Over the past couple of years I have been very thankful for my little stock pile. I agree with everything you purchased except for the can fruit. I had a can explode (still in date) so now I buy my fruit in the glass jars at Sams or Costco. About a year ago I had to start eating a gluten-free diet. That put an end to fast food for me! Typically, I cook 2 times a week on my days off. I'll have leftovers one or two times (with a day or two between) and make freezer meals with remaining leftovers. On the in-between days, I pull something from the freezer (one of my prior freezer meals), add a side or salad, and voila! It's new to me. Other nights I might have breakfast for dinner.

    If this is actually for your preps, never buy larger canned items than what your family will eat in one sitting or at least in a few hours after opening. You need to presume a lack of available refrigeration. Cost effective won't matter in a grid down situation. Smaller cans are also important because you and your family may not all be present when you eat. Smaller cans could be more useful for trade goods. In an emergency situation they aren't exactly going to give you change for a large can. It isn't a matter of just stockpiling food. Consider the kind of situations you may need it for.

    Matthew 6:25-34
    Do Not Worry
    25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?
    28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you-you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Plus, I can be a blessing and share with others from my stockpile! I always chose faith over fear. 🙏
