  • The Bede BD-10 was a homebuilt supersonic jet designed by the famous Jim Bede. It offered the performance of a surplus military jet at a fraction of the cost by building it yourself.

My grandpa built the N700JP. The J in the tail represents the name Jim and the P stands for Priebe. His is one of the two that didn't crash out of the 5 built.

For a aircraft that was designed by a prospective kit builder and supplier this jet is very impressive . Jim didn't have the resources or funding of some of his peers the plane had kinks that needed worked out. So did the grumman F14- Tomcat but Grumman's solution was a navy contract test pilots with top military training and military backing. The BD-10 had and still has potential. The advantage of private experimental aircraft is you can improve the design over time . Don't reinvent the wheel just reinforce the week spokes.

They'd have to use honeycomb filled stabilizers and in other high wind stress areas. You can't give vibrations any place to start from the air stream or it can get magnified real quick.

It would be neat to see what could be done with either Titanium or Carbon or both. Thanks for this wonderful little documentary, I was familiar with some of Bede's other work but not this.

they are currently waiting for more declared and sincere interest in the BD-10 to decide if it is worth redesigning and selling as kits again.

The Viper Aircraft ViperJet MKII appears to be the composite equivalent - even using the same engine - and the ViperJet is even heavier... about 30% heavier than the heaviest BD-10.
There have been several Very Light Jets since the BD-10, and some of them appear to work well (even if they didn't actually make it to production), but other than the ViperJet they don't have this military style. They're generally of composite construction, and they usually have the engine is somewhat separate nacelle instead of in the tail like this. None attempt to be supersonic, which (in hindsight) was an unreasonable expectation for the BD-10.

I know that the BD-10 would not be safe to build and fly. But a set of plans would make a great record of what might have been. Does anyone know where I might find a set for a low price?

Better to come up with your own design, which fixes BD-10 problems, and build it yourself.

To bad these failed I wonder if they where built with more modern materials they would have remained intact these were known to disintegrate going to super sonic.

BC-10 was the world's first attempt at designing a homebuilt supersonic jet. It failed, never having achieved anything near supersonic speeds.
It looked very cool, and quite many people were truly excited at the prospect of building a supersonic plane, but the design was bad, and out of five prototypes that were built, three crashed due to airframe failure (and the remaining two aren't flyable). The kit production never started.
Jim Bede designed several legendary airplanes, but BD-10 will be the permanent stain on his legacy.

Bede = hype. Watched a guy break his back once when his bd-5J deployed the reverser in the air. He pancaked it in about 100 ft short of the airport boundary.

    •  2 роки тому +2

@@bigal1863 Not all of Bede is hype. As I said, there are several models, from the old BD-1, to the popular BD-4 (oldest homebuilt still sold and supported), that have survived the test of time and are solid designs.

BD stepped outside his realm. Crap don't reinvent the wheel copy that is proven. Can you say Rutan? Glass and carbon is where the the strength to weight issues are solved! Thinking they could skin with aluminum is ridiculously ignorant. Yes could be done, with much more weight. Nuff said....
