According to The Band's Robbie Robertson, he wrote this song while he was staying at Levon Helm's parents house in Arkansas. Robbie has stated in numerous interviews and books over the decades that Levon's father, Nell Helm was a very proud Southerner who told him many stories about his life growing up on a cotton farm as well as stories about the lives of his ancestors. Nell Helm proudly said to Robbie one day, "You know what Robbie? The South *will* rise again someday." Robbie then took all of Nell's stories, emotions and feelings of Southern pride and wrote this song. This was Robbie's tribute to the South and all the many proud Southern men and women who thought & felt exactly like Nell Helm did.
Robbie is a clown and has said the lyrics need to ne changed and he done that in his last performance. RIp Levon. You should never had let Robbie into your home.

I'm a huge fan of classic rock, for me Chris Robinson is one of the few singers who still sings with a ton of soul. This one's beautiful! Also if you've seen the footage of Jimmy Page with the Crowes, he does the old Zep stuff better than any active singer today! Levon Helm still rules, but if the Band isn't around, the Crowes deserve this shot! especially when its that good.
Best cover of this song I've ever heard. His voice is plaintive and desperate; as you would imagine a starving, shoeless Confederate to sound. Only boys from the South could pull off such a hauntingly beautiful cover.

They are together and touring now. I’ve seen them at least 10 times. The last time was a hometown Georgia show this past summer and he’s a guys are getting better and better every time I see them.

I was recently in Petersburg Virginia near Fort LEE and ran into a gigantic old old cemetary Blandford Cemetary where 30,000 confederate soldiers were buried after the siege of petersburg...its a shrine to the lost cause of the confederacy...this is where memorial day was created (look it up) It is amazing...and atop one giant monument theres a statue of robert e lee and inscibed below him it says GLORIA VICTUS which means glory to the vanquished... my family have lived in the appalacian mountains since before the revolutionary war...only one person in this area had slaves his name was Patrick Hagan and they were indentured servants and after their debt was paid they were freed and most of themsettled all around Hagan Hall and thru hunters valley where they continued to work for Mr. Hagan and owned their homes...does anybody understand how HARD it was to survive herebback then? Well, in defense of the Crowes, I was at this show (Fillmore in SF) and they had just literally played like a 3 hour set. Might explain the 'lackluster' energy into the song. I've seen hundreds of shows over the years and this one ranks up there. Some of the shit they did was simply amazing. Thanks fellas for an unforgettable night!

I turned 50 last year and over the last 3 years I really started studying all kinds of history, American, European, the middle ages, the dark ages, etc. I learned some of it in HS and College but in the 3 years I went a lot deeper, and here's the thing: From 500 BC up until around WW2 life was pretty damn tough for probably 95% of ALL PPL, not just southern blacks, and I'm not saying that I don't feel for anyone who was enslaved, but after studying history pretty damn extensively all of us should be thankful we live in the time we live in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is just incrediable. The emotion and soul that is poured into this. I'm sorry, but only a southerner can really nail this song. A Canadian may have written it, but an Arkansan put the soul in it. Baez sings a nice easy to listen to song, but crap people she didn't even get the words right. She just liked the tune and had no idea of the emotion and the feelings evoked by the tune. I for one had a great uncle who "was just 18, proud and brave, but a yankee laid him in his grave."

I don't think this song should be about politics. Brother killed brother in the bloodiest war our nation has been through. It caused pain and evil was committed by both side. This song laments the destruction of a home and a life and does it in a way that should touch anyone's heart. Black Crowes are my personal favorite band and The Band is a top 5 for me....great video

Oh this is amazing, not only do i love The Band for being original, i love The Black Crowes for covering this song and keepin it original.
This is just incrediable. The emotion and soul that is poured into this. I'm sorry, but only a southerner can really nail this song. A Canadian may have written it, but an Arkansan put the soul in it. Baez sings a nice easy to listen to song, but crap people she didn't even get the words right. She just liked the tune and had no idea of the emotion and the feelings evoked by the tune. I for one had a great uncle who "was just 18, proud and brave, but a yankee laid him in his grave."

Sounds proper with the horns. Reminds me of a time I saw the crowes at a small club in the 90s. That performance was life changing.
I don't think this song should be about politics. Brother killed brother in the bloodiest war our nation has been through. It caused pain and evil was committed by both side. This song laments the destruction of a home and a life and does it in a way that should touch anyone's heart. Black Crowes are my personal favorite band and The Band is a top 5 for me....great video
