That's hard to do, because everybody's parents are different and have different reasons for not wanting a bird. The best thing I could suggest, is proving to your parents that you are responsible and know about everything involved in caring for a parakeet. Hopefully one day you will have the chance to own a budgie :-). Good luck!
Veggies is better than fruit, fruit is high in sugar so should only be given occasionally. Veggies are much healthier. Just keep offering veggies, your bird will eventually try it! Try serving them in different ways to- chopped up tiny, big, different shapes, grated, grated finely, peeled, whole, etc
My budgie is almost 10, has always been a fussy eater and a seed junkie but with his moult and behavior change he has finally started eating lettuce out of a bowl, yes! (of course I had to sprinkle seeds over the leaves but its great to see him munching his greens). He's enjoying them, apple and a bit of banana next I think!
Thank you so much for answering so quickly! I love your videos and find them very informative. I will definitely look at the website you provided. I'm really looking forward to getting a new little pal:-) Now I know even more about caring for him!! Nan
Can you please make a video on when to feed your bird? I love your enthusiasm! Great video! I am planning on getting a bird very soon. I have never had one before. Please help!
Thank you for posting these VERY informational videos! For someone(ME,lol) looking to get acquire a Parakeet, your video gives me good insight on what to look for and avoid!
+DOOM89 That was a great question...had to look it up! Apparently these are ok and you can give them frozen (according to The Bird Channel www.birdchannel.com/bird-diet-and-health/bird-nutrition/bird-frozen-foods.aspx). Thanks for asking about that!
Hi there, I just found out that cabbage isn't good for parakeets and I have been feeding them for about two weeks with seed and some cabbage, but today I switched to cilantro and broccoli because they don't like hard things like carrot yet, but i'm working on that. I didn't notice a problem with them other than some more poop than normal, but I assume that's because of the cabbage. I will not feed them cabbage anymore and remember to do my research next time. Do you have any tips for how to get them to like other veggies? I have to try cutting them up very finely since my birds are lazy and won't eat anything bigger than a millimeter lol, but I saw one budgie try to lick it and immediately ran away from it.
I just bought a male and female parakeet a week ago, they are happy and very vocal at times and i can only get them on my hand in the cage so far but not out as of yet..patience is key and all but what's the best way to introduce them to fresh foods?? This is only my second time being a owner of these feathery friends.. not much experience so thought i would ask..
Hi, I was curious about what brand of vegetables you get your Parakeets. I want to start adding veggies to their diets and want to make sure I avoid any Pesticides or anything else unhealthy for them. I'm told organic is the best way to go, but others say even they have some pesticides in them. I know you have to use to be using a safe brand however, so I was just curious.
Parakeet will be easy to convince. They love new things and they love to rip to pieces everything. Cockatiels on the other hand... Too chill to even look at veggie plate. Gotta use sneak with them.
I gave my two, grapes and banana but they won't eat it, it even pecked the grape when I gave it to it. Like an aggressive peck, I gave some millet seeds then as it was eating I slowly gave the grape as well and it turned its head and flew off, both of them.
i'm a bit confused, it says to avoid cruciferous vegetables but then later she mentions giving them kale to bathe with. is it alright to give them just a little kale?
You can leave the skin on. Just make sure you wash the fruit thoroughly, so there are no traces of pesticides left on it. Also, I would not feed the seeds! Hope your bird(s) enjoy the apple!
You mention feeding pellets. When I had birds I fed them a commercial mix of seeds and then millet as a treat. Now I'm planning to adopt a new keet and want to make sure he gets everything he needs. Can you please explain what pellets are, where to buy them (I've never seen them), and how to feed them? I read on one site to soak them and mix them with organic baby food. What do you think? Thanks! Nan
Nancy Towne Hi Nan. You can view the site for Harrison's Bird Foods for some great information about pelleted diets and how to feed and change over a bird that is currently eating another diet (view their handbook for this). The address is www.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/. Pellets are similar to dog kibble, just much much smaller (at least for budgies). They offer a broader spectrum of nutrition for birds than seeds do. You can get them online and in pet stores (Petsmart and Petco sell them and the brand I most often see there is ZuPreem which comes in a fruit flavor and plain....the plain has a lot less additives, but the fruit flavor is more attractive to some birds). You would feed them just as you would seeds. I personally offer a 1/2 and 1/2 mix of seeds and pellets to my birds, but you can check the information for the brand you choose to see what the company recommends. Best of luck!
What about dried fruit that is all natural and no sugar added for flavor? I live near a wegmans grocery store and they have some organic dried fruit. I was wondering, since I could leave it if I'm out all day and want to give them fruit without worry of spoiling.
Thank you, I need a bigger cage I think but since its been only 3days I really to early to tell. Cant wait for your video and thanks for sharing your advice with me, so spring is mating season.
I just published the video. Hope you like it! Well, better said, spring is the START of mating season. Parakeets are opportunistic breeders that will breed as long as conditions are right (when days start getting longer and there is more light, it starts things). So they can be in the mood to breed through summer and into fall also.
kittyface lover .......males have a blue cere (the piece with their nostrils on it). Females have a brown cere. Purple Ceres mean the bird is too young to tell. Blue for Boys. Brown for females.
Lynn Peppa from what ive reserched when they are young purple cere means its a male and light blue with white around the nostrils means it is a female :)
my girl keet mayvis seems to have a mind of her own and does not seem to care for millet. What else can i do to train her? She trust me well enough but she doesn't seem to care to be trained, she is still quite young only 2 months old i just dont know what to do for her. Also i have a boy keetBoofo who doesn't seem to know how to use his wings, he flaps them around vigourously on the occasion but doesnt use them to get around, again he is young as well, their wings are both clipped but that doesnt stop mayvis from flying around to her limit. Also Mayvis does this weird thing where shell try to get up under Boofo like shes trying to push him out of the way and then just goes on the other side of him? Any suggestions on what that mean?
Kylie Gunsch I would say give your birds a little more time to mature. If you can, leave them some millet in the cage and see if they will start exploring it on their own (take it out if it becomes soiled). If that doesn't work, you can always use a treat stick or something else they enjoy (like grapes, kale, etc.) for training purposes. It definitely takes budgies a while to learn how to properly fly, and if yours have clipped wings, then they really shouldn't be able to fly (just glide to the ground). It's normal for them to still try though, and flapping can help them get some exercise (as long as they are not hurting themselves). I haven't heard of the behavior you are talking about when Mayvis gets under Boofo. She may be trying to groom or something similar.
I got my birds from someone and that someone Got them from some very old couple that left them behind. So we had them for 3days I think they are old birds am I able to train them and I do noticed that they are pretty quiet too and that one of them pecks the other one a lot what can I do to help them we all are falling in love with them. Thank you.
If you are worried about the pecking, please stay tuned, as I'm about to release a video on parakeet fighting. It could just be them getting used to things, so give them a bit more time to see if they adjust. Also, make sure you have a large enough cage so that they can get away from each other if needed (mine is about 24x26x9 inches wide and tall and deep). Finally, this time of year is tough, as it's mating season and many birds that are usually milder in temperament can get a little more agitated. This passes in time.
Glad this video helped, and YES!, I can do a video on how to get your parakeet to trust you (great idea). I am working on a few other requests, and will get that up as quickly as possible. Thanks for your comment!
Hi! :D I'm having big trouble with them eating fruits and veggies haha! Mine are handraised, and were only eating seeds, and millet as far as I know, And I tried to give them everything, chopped as tiny as possible, but they are still being affraid of it! I don't know what to do anymore! :D Could it be, that they will never going to eat it? ^^" They don't even try the apple haha!
+Lauren Elizabeth I have found a silly method by now haha! :D I chop it in very small bits as tiny as you can, like the size of a seed, then when you've got their attention, and gained their trust, you eat a few pieces in front of them, so they see you eating it, so they think it is safe, and then you let them try it ^_^
Hi I'm a new subscriber and this video was very helpful. If you haven't can you make a video about how to get a parakeet to realize the name you have for It? Thanks and I will try this on my new parakeets!
thank you so much , just got 2 for my boys. but it is a work is progress in training them(including the 2 legged human boys) please keep them coming, you are very encouraging and helpful
I love your videos. My question for you is, I just got two new budgies, from a pet store. A fellow bird owner saw me shopping, and suggested that I buy mite and flea spray, how would I know when I need to use it? Do I treat them as a precaution, or wait till I see something wrong?
I have 3 parakeets 2 are already grown up and i have tried to feed them celery and apples but they dont seem to eat it and just go for the seeds i have not gave some to my other parakeet because he is still a young little baby (should i start giving it to him now?) please help because i would love to see them eating some fruits and veggies not seeds!! ;)
Madelen Bluehill You might try presenting them with the fruits/veggies in smaller portions or on a skewer. Apple seeds (and other fruit seeds) should not be given to budgies, as they can be toxic. The celery is ok, but doesn't contain a lot of nutrients. I would try Kale...you can wash it and leave it a little wet, so your birds will be encouraged to "bathe" on the leaves. Grapes (again without seeds) can be a hit too! I cut mine up into very small cubes and my birds love it.
zahra cocer Parakeets don't drink much, so it is hard to catch them "in the act." I have only seen mine drink a few times. If you see any alarming signs in your bird's behavior (like lethargy, a tendency to stay at the bottom of the cage, poor hygiene, etc.) then I would recommend taking it to see an avian veterinarian.
Ok, so I own two parakeets I got them two days ago. Ive been giving them a good diet, lots of toys and I talk to them. But they still stay in one spot and do nothing. Its not the part of me wanting to watch them because I know they need a break but I am kind of worried, is there something that could be deeper?
+emily brazil it takes budgies a while to adjust to new surroundings, so just give them some time and hopefully they will start behaving more like typical budgies soon!
My parakeet refuses to eat anything but seed. Iv tried countless times to feed him veggies and fruit. Does anyone know how to get him to eat that stuff? please help.
Budgies can be pretty picky and apprehensive about new things. The key is to keep trying and see what works. Mine really took to Kale, especially if it's still a bit wet and they can lick the water off or "bathe" on it. Also, grapes cut into tiny pieces (minus the seeds) are a popular hit.
All of the research I've been able to do has pointed to the fact that kale is great for birds. Do you have a specific article or source that says it is not?
Have you tried a variety of different fruits and veggies? Also, the container (blue and yellow) can be used to house larger pieces of veggies (like a large piece of Kale for instance). I just discovered that mine love veggies presented this way, so that may help you also. Patience is the key also...it may take your birds some time to get used to something new!
MMFurniture More Well it's a good sign that they are pecking at it! Have you tried a large piece of green (like kale) that is still slightly moist from rinsing? Sometimes they will "bathe" on that and then eat some of it as well. Also, are your birds hand tame? If they are used to your hand, you might try "investigating" the food with your hand to get them interested. Oftentimes, if you find it interesting, your birds will follow along. How long do you leave the food for them? It sounds like they are slightly frightened and may need more time to get used to the food being around.
Can you do a video on how toget your parents to get you a parakeet. I have been wanting one for about two years and they still said no.
That's hard to do, because everybody's parents are different and have different reasons for not wanting a bird. The best thing I could suggest, is proving to your parents that you are responsible and know about everything involved in caring for a parakeet. Hopefully one day you will have the chance to own a budgie :-). Good luck!

Kale is a part of cabbage family, do not feed it budgie.
What about dried fruit that is all natural and no sugar added for flavor?
I live near a wegmans grocery store and they have some organic dried fruit. I was wondering, since I could leave it if I'm out all day and want to give them fruit without worry of spoiling.
IthilwenRose Dried fruits are fine, as long as it's a fruit that birds can eat. There are several lists online of what can be given.

Err... Parakeets should have fruits and veggies.. But don't you think that's a bit too much kale for ur parakeet....
They like to roll around in things like kale or lettuce, and than eat some of it. It's not only a snack, it's a toy! That's why there's so much.
+OHGODLEVI oh ok
do you train them to talk?
maïs out of a can is the bad?

Lots of great information. Pleasant voice (and cute too).. Thanks for the tips !
Will they eat a banana?
Patrick Cabarles They can eat it. Some budgies may enjoy eating it, and others might not. It depends on the individual bird.
How about a mango?
Patrick Cabarles Yes, they can eat mango as well!
How about a tomato?
Patrick Cabarles Yes, they can eat those!
Actually, budgies love uncooked broccoli.
I’m getting my birds tomorrow!
I have the same cage and cup:)
Mirna Gonzalez Awesome!
Can I feed mint leaves to my parakeets?

Is it better to buy keets in pairs?M/F
if u want them to have babys
103Catherine you should buy budgies in pairs because they are flock birds and need one or two more partners
Thanks so much I will try this and see if he will eat.
Parakeek Gaming Good luck!
Thanks I hope your channel grows!
Parakeek Gaming Thank you so much. I really appreciate that and would love to help more people with their birds!
thanks :3
Ok but you said in the fruits to try you said broccoli and you also said broccoli in the fruits to avoid!
Thank you for bringing that to my attention! Did you notice that in the video?
kale is not good for parrots
All of the research I've been able to do has pointed to the fact that kale is great for birds. Do you have a specific article or source that says it is not?
The Parrot Perch im from Germany and the pet spezailists here always Tell Me that kale makes a bloated stomach :)
@@GossipSis that's interesting! I would definitely not overfeed it, but it's good to feed in moderation for anything. Thank you for sharing.
My parakeet hasn't eaten yet.. I got it a few days ago and I'm feeding it the same food as at the pet store
Lila White is it ok now?
hi well i am doing everything you said to do but its not working they keep runing away from it so what should i do?
Have you tried a variety of different fruits and veggies? Also, the container (blue and yellow) can be used to house larger pieces of veggies (like a large piece of Kale for instance). I just discovered that mine love veggies presented this way, so that may help you also. Patience is the key also...it may take your birds some time to get used to something new!
***** thx i will try that out
ive gave them lots of different kinds of fruits and veges but they would only peck at it then run away any more advice?
MMFurniture More Well it's a good sign that they are pecking at it! Have you tried a large piece of green (like kale) that is still slightly moist from rinsing? Sometimes they will "bathe" on that and then eat some of it as well. Also, are your birds hand tame? If they are used to your hand, you might try "investigating" the food with your hand to get them interested. Oftentimes, if you find it interesting, your birds will follow along. How long do you leave the food for them? It sounds like they are slightly frightened and may need more time to get used to the food being around.
ok ill try that out and my birds keep pecking the pearch now all the perches are pecked in half do u have any suggestions what to do
I just got parakeets literally five minutes ago and not sure exactly what vegetables to place in their diet thanks for the info
