I'm willing to care about League of Legends as much as Riot Games Inc. is willing to care about it. In it seems like that's "not very much." No Aatrox, no Darkin, no Ixtal enchanter, no follow-up on Bel'veth or Kai'sa or Taliyah, no interest in Sejuani or Olaf, or Pantheon's story. Hell, they didn't even care to tease Aurelion Sol.
Instead we get cringe-ass high school edgelord poetry read by an actress who's too good for this material over an Unreal Engine 5 upscaled Summoner's Rift with some phoned in orchestral garbage.
I still care about the characters in this game, but it's very clear that Corporate Entity Riot Games does not.

Reuploaded to fix a bad rendering error, sorry.
bro i got scared you pulled the video right as i was watching it lol
Oh I thought it was some kind of anti-copyright detector thing.
No worries TBSkyen! Was listening the old one and will listen to this one also!
Butterfly is teaser for newest enchanter champion and so is the voice narrating.
Your bad rendering error made me want to quit watching your videos
Seriously sad about the downgrade in the cinematic. The Call gave us a prequel to Bel'veth, Xolaani teaser, Sejuani lore, etc. It felt like a proper opening to the year, and was cool lore. This seems like an annoying UA-cam ad I would skip as soon as 5 seconds hit.
and the whole darkin wars happening AGAIN with ryze n kayle. They def had material for this
Biggest season budget wise btw
They could of even done a generic fight and that would be better
This stuff, recent game releases, and the DnD OGL stuff are making me worry this year is gonna be sad for gaming in all forms.
@@tacticalbacon5727 indie gaming is looking really good 2023 and 2024
You know it's bad when TBSkyen is only talking about animation for only about half an hour.
And then you realize less than half of that thirty minutes is actually about animation
True.
Now it looks like I copied your comment. Sadge
Pretty sure there isn't a single sentence about animation in the whole video, really
If anything it's more of an announcement video of where TBs channel will be going this year
It's insane how, after years of in-fiting between laners, different elo players, smurfs and harstucks, EUW and NA, LAN and LAS, KDA and Pentakill, and all the other rivalries that have been created towards the years, they somehow managed to unite us all in one breath by making a cinematic that is so unbelievably half-assed it cleaned the spite we all had for each other.
The lore enjoyers and the sweaty try hards and the people who listen to the music :what the hell is this
@@dankmemes8254 Lol yeah you know it's bad when even the sweaty tryhards are like "wtf?"
I was already sick of league and considered uninstalling it. The game felt stale, they needed something big to turn it around. If this is all they can put forth I guess I'm done. They have now made it very clear that this is no dry spell for content, this is just all that the higher ups at riot will allow for. Boring shit like this
If such a controversial and irreconcilable fanbase is “United”, that is always the worst word to hear. It means (unless the people in question are about to perform a miracle or two) that the product in question has massively screwed over everything. There is no uniting over good things simply because there was no unity, and because quality is now nonexistent and only in hindsight.
Also is it me or is the rendering bad for this cinematic ??? 💀😂 It feels off and kinda less sharp lol
I think what Riot doesn’t see is that projects like Arcane and Ruined King are only so successful because it takes advantage of the world they built
Yes 👍! Thank you I was trying to figure out how to say this
True to that. This game is the reason other projects are so successful. Sadly all the money riot made with league isn’t even going into league pc. Game only got a few more years in the tank till they’ll jump to the mmo, fighter and so on. I bet most of the money went to Val.
@@xxargonautxx9790 the game won't be going anywhere
@@BM0NNZY They're trying to kill it off though, but not reinvesting into it. They've done it before on a smaller scale: Twisted Treeline.
They shifted people at upcoming porjects and are making new bases around the usa for this same reason. Problem is the speed at which the community evolves and wants content is exponentially higher than the speed they can hire and make new foundations. Its not like a cinematic can be done in one day if most of the people that worked on it are on arcane or mmo storyline
I can't believe that I pushed the dislike button on a League of Legends Cinematic.
Same
wait… lemme do that real quick
And yet that's exaclty what they need, early feedback they are not doing a good work.
The like-dislike ratio makes me laugh
I found myself so not caring I forgot to do that. but don't feel like going back just to do it.
the butterfly represents my hope for the new season leaving my body as im watching the cinematic
Someone (sadly can't remember his name) said: " If you don't feel emotional about your creation, others won't. And how could they?" A sadly accurate mirror to what's happening right now
i remember the quote as well, i just don‘t know where i heard it.
NickyBoi?
Feels like common sense to me.
I actually wait whole year for a new cinematic, because they are always so good. The feeling of watching "The call" or "Warriors" for the first time is unforgettable.
This is a huge step down from the quality they established and, honestly, another spit in the face of their playerbase. It's like they want us to stop playing LoL so they can focus on other games
Hey if it meant more constant updates to LoR and fastening the MMO development I will take that ngl
Yeah, it gives me hope they are actually working on the MMO instead. I really want this MMO to be "the game" for me.
@@dankmemes8254 it probably won't because they are different teams, and it's not like riot doesn't have enough money man
The cinematics are like at least at the top 3 of coolest things that league has, everyone loves them, you forget that you actually hate the game and everyone who plays it. Why should i care about league in 2023 when riot doesn't?
@@viniciuspedrosa2405 i´ve read that a lot of ppl from the rotating gamemode team went to the mmo team, seems liek they´re actually putting a lot of their league staff onto the mmo but i dont get why they would cut league off like that. they should have more than enough recourses to develop and mmo BESIDE new content for league.
The poem is about a person, who climbed ranked with int Sion strategy.
His body was dying over and over and there was no honor in his axe, yet he stood victorious in every game.
He stood victorious by mercilessly crushing his opponents' hopes and dreams for getting any fun in his games.
And as the new season starts and the int Sion strat got nerfed,
He is ready to climb the ranked ladder again, to abuse the shit out of the meta,
To pick Vayne top, if that's the only way to crush his opponent's soul.
He will teach them fear, he will teach them defeat.
He will get out of bronze no matter the cost.
"Why? Because I can."
Far better than what riot conjured in the corporate board
Man i miss the crying nunu build
They should have just done this instead, 100x better
powerful.
Lmao
I feel like this is the final ripples of the decisions that came from Sentinels of Light flopping. Riot execs saw that people hated the poorly handled lore and decided "players don't want lore" instead of "players want better lore". Now we're at the point where they've fully divested.
Only speck of hope now is that this is the bottom of the barrel and they'll finally feel the loss of so many content drivers and casual fans, leading to 2024 having nowhere to go but up.
Ive basically finally fully given up on League of Legends the game and now put it on a backburner until the MMO shows up
What really bumms me out about that is that LoR is also suffering that fallout. I'd LOVE for Riot to just move the lore and story content to LoR and give us more canon stuff there (looking at Tiyari first and foremost), and to keep the game alive as a smaller and somewhat niche but loved by the fanbase game. I'm currently enjoying the everloving shit out of LoR with the Darkin storyline, but the lack of actually engageable content is a bummer.
Basically as an avid LoR player, I'd love for Riot to invest MORE to bring LoR up to be a worthy challenger of Hearthstone, rather than just dipping out and silently pulling the plug. The current expansion is fun as all hell to play (for me), and if I didn't have the constant feeling of "Riot is going to kill this soon"; I'd probably switch over to LoR for my RP sink of choice. With how it stands though, it has to be TfT. Ya know, the game mode that's actually supported by the company.
The execs at riot seem to have a tendency of purposefully misreading player feedback and statistics and taking it as an excuse to be even lazier with what they put out. First using the "monster champions and champions that don't fit beauty standards are played less" statistic and acting like the reason they aren't played is because they aren't conventionally attractive instead of the fact that they give those same champions the most niche kits and highest skill floors in the game. Then taking "people close the game after only a few nexus blitz games" and misreading it as "players don't like nexus blitz" instead of "nexus blitz is one of the few gamemodes that actually leaves players satisfied after a match rather than with burning hatred against their teammates so intense that they feel a need to start a new match just so they can take it out on their next teammates"
Ugh I hate that corporations always takeaway that wrong message rather than admit they screwed up.
"DId we mess up that one? No, the children are wrong."
I mean, skooch as quitted LoL now, and Necrit, you know, the BIGGEST lore channel for lol, said that he will be prioritizing other things than lol, since last year was awful in terms of lore( 2 universe stories, aside from the launch stories)
To be fair though, i think the cinematic is really on point, since it is now accurately portraing what they will focus on this year, ranked and solo queue and thats it.
After Arcane aired, The Call was such a epic sales pitch to an LoL beginner like me. I never played the games but i binged hourssssss of Skyen content along with Scooch, NickyBoi and Necrit. I'm so invested in the world, so this development hurts me.
As a 7 year old league fan, I have never disliked a league cinematic. Today that changed...
But if this is a teaser for the client and engine rework I'll easily take this for an amazing trailer and take the L
My exact experience of getting into League. Had the misfortune of actually playing the game and yeah it's not rewarding and is so dry of content. At the very least I could've excused the egregious treatment of the game with really great lore but oof even that is being affected.
I am a big fan of league since the beginning and Sentinels of Light really hurt me, now this broke my heart
I love the lore and everything but it is actually dying
@@grapehool7699 there won´t be a client rework, they had announced it if it would be a thing
Same. I love League, sorta. Not the game, but the content creators and the cinematics! And Arcane.
It genuinely looks like an Unreal Engine 3 tech demo. It even has that weird glossy effect from the default shaders lmao.
I wish they took a completely different path with this. If they wanted a summoner's rift animation they could have either gone with taking seriously a team fight like "A new Dawn", or innocent fun like "You really got me".
You could introduce the new jungle pets with a scene where Rengar destroys a big monster and then pets his little lizard friend who tries to help.
It's really sad seeing a game with so much potential fading away because it's just too big to fail.
The entire time that the camera was flying through the rift, I was just waiting for some kind of epic fight, or at least a little skirmish or something to really make it exciting. But just nah, it’s literally just summoners rift, nothing interesting until near the end with the daggers where we don’t even get to see the actual champion or an actual fight
@@aberrantreptile I was so ready for the Baron to pop out and do something.
@@NocturnalPyro Riot: "Best we can do is tree-shaking"
It couldd be simple like The Climb, which only last 2 minutes and has a song with no lycris but still has that vibe that we love
Ironically the “make your mark” ideology is why the game is toxic in the first place. Too many people trying to play like it’s the LCS, but not doing enough to educate themselves and grow bc they wanna play like Faker…
We need more English teacher Skyen content in these trying times. Driving half baked "inspirational" poems into the dirt is downright cathartic. (This is a message from the now lost to time dark world version of this video)
I don't think he likes being overly negative, much of the internet is already dedicated to takedown content in that style, perhaps too much. I like skyen being more focused on positives

We get to see unhinged Skyen sometimes , as a treat.
Well said. I even remember having the call as an ad and just listening to the whole thing as an ad cause it was just that good xD
I kinda wish they just stitched together the in-game voice lines. Made it seem less like a singular thesis and more like a crowd of people with different outlooks coming together for a shared struggle, or something. It wouldn't be _good,_ but it would probably be _less bad._ More obviously cheap, though.

Hey y'all, if you like the content Skyen puts out about League, and felt any hint of disappointment with him taking a step back from it in the video, PLEASE consider watching his Boss Dedigns Of series. It is so much more than the name suggests, and really shows off how insightful Skyen is about character and level design. I found him through League, but Boss Designs made me fall in love with an entire series of games.
I love his takes on Bloodborne boss designs, made me really want to play the game ! Though I can't cause can't and don't want to buy the console...
I have tried to watch his stuff. Its a shame i find it a bit hard to digest some of the deeper lore he talks about from those IPs.. maybe it might be my fault cuz i just clicked on a random stuff xD
God yes, if that series gets enough attention he might finish elden ring and actually start ds3
Thanks kind stranger for the excellent recommendation, i might not have been here for league only, only got here through shorts, but goddamn you're right! I absolutely ADORE ds2, and how skyen went trough it and how he analyses the bosses... even only in the first video of the series... genuinely brought a tear to my eye
I loved the part where Powder's VO shouted "Look at the cleanse! Look at the moves! FAKER WHAT WAS THAT?!?"

Rito inhaling thier player base copium
they were right about this year being league's biggest year, just not in the way we thought
Yep! More budget so that the execs can get their pay rises
Higher budget for them probably means more money in their pockets, not to be invested in the actual development of the fucking company.
It's all going to skins obviously
I don't know what you guys are talking about, this was the best cinematic ever, all the best champions appeared: Rengar, Kha'Zix, Evelynn, Teemo, Twitch, Shaco, Akshan, Kai'Sa, Qiyana, Vayne, Pyke all the way around, Aurelion Sol on the skies, Ivern, Maokai and Malphite on the background, the cinematic with the most champions until now, loved it!

Zyra too~

I thought this was just a teaser of the real deal, but no, that was actually the cinematic. A drone hovering about around the RTX rift while some kid yaps random quotes from different champions.
Honestly, I started playing Smite because the narrative of League felt like it was being abandoned. If I’m going to play a MOBA that doesn’t have a story, I may as well play one that never tried to have a story.
i think powder did a great job with the task she was given. the poem itself wasnt good, but she made something out of nothing in my opinion.

This is just heartbreaking to see. The massive drought the world of Runeterra went through in 2022 combined with this sends a clear message. Riot just... Doesn't give a shit about their own world...
I've followed the world of Runeterra for over 5 years, and I don't know if I can do it any longer...
My interest with League began with watching Aurelion Sol’s trailer and I was hooked since. Now, I’ve seen its slow and gradual downfall and I’m struggling to care anymore. We’ve been left in the dirt by Riot’s mismanagement and lack of any vision for what they want and it’s heartbreaking that we care more than them.
That's me 5 years too this being the start of the 6 one
The lore in the games is dead arcane is all we have left
They never truly cared, they only had occasional drunk bursts of motivations, you know like that once in a year event when you decide you have to clean the whole house, reason? You have even bigger responsibilities coming
@jaimeyyyyyyyy i mean frankly, there never was much lore released per year, but 2021 was comparatively worse than the years before.
Their outsourced animation studios (Fortiche/Blur) must be busy with other projects to make them a cinematic on time. This is most likely their first inhouse animation since The Ryze cinematic (presumably). I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case, goes to show you most of the cinematics we love aren't even from Riot themselves.
Oh shoot. They outsource from Blur? Now some of that quality seen previously makes sense. Blur is so good!
@@fpedrosa2076 Yes, they did the Warriors 2020, The Call and Wild Rift Cinematics. They also do some for Valorant
the team that worked on last year "the call" worked on the Valorant Cinematic because for riot it is more important, look all the budget that Valorant got and is getting. They don´t care for league and the player.
This trailer was also outsourced to some extent, it was made by Illusorium Studios who among other things made the CG Zeri trailer (at least according to the description on the Season Cinematic video, it's not on Illusorium's website atm)
They went from probably their best cinematic, The Call to this.. I'm speechless..
Sadly the other newer children are riots favourites 🤣. This game has only a few years left for the western playerbase.

I still think that Awaken is the best cinematic, but The Call is an extremely close second. And it's still appalling nonetheless. Hell, you could literally put it against their first ever cinematic back in 2010, and that one would STILL be better than this one.
Before the shitshow that happened with Blizzard, I remembered the moment the game started to "die" was actually when they changed their focus to the Overwatch League. Lore and community events became scarse or just stopped, and the game became stale without any significant new content.
The funny thing is, the OWLeague is bleeding money.
But I'm afraid Riot is gonna focus on Esports instead of, you know, the actual game. I don't understand how they didn't realize that what brings them new players are the lore, cinematics, stories, and community fan art. Don't get me wrong, I like watching pro players occasionally, but it's not something a newcomers will be interested in
So funny. Lore was one of the key sells for overwatch, and it just fucking died.

Worst part is that actually quotes from champion. Which making riot didnt give single fk on this year cinematic
The Call was literally my 3rd most listened to song last year. Listening to it still gives me chills. The stark contrast between 2022 and 2023 cinematics is so saddening to me. I'm really hoping riot pulls their act together and brings back what made League so special.
Once again, I am thoroughly convinced Esports and the sole focus on competitive has been a vampire to the soul and passion that this game once had. Esports has torn the love out of this game.
As a former LoR player, I thought that what had happened to LoR would also happen to LoL as well; as Riot moved its resources to their new eventual cash cow, the MMO project. Any LoR player could tell you that the latest Darkin expansion series were the most noticeable dip in terms of visual quality, especially when it comes to level-up animations of some champions like Ryze and Varus.
It's clear that Riot nowadays thinks of LoL more of as a "shared universe from which we can derive more varied content from" similar to Arcane and other games/media instead of improving/building upon the already-existing game, as it has reached its peak popularity already. It wouldn't shock me to see LoL become the "second fiddle" in Riot's catalogue, similar to how Hearthstone rose and fell within its own relation to World of Warcraft.
I aggre
As someone who absolutely loves the current expansion in LoR: yeah, quality is definitely way down. Gameplay fun is way up for me, but animations, design and general amount of content are absolutely lacking.
When did we get the last guardian that's not a scythe? I genuinely couldn't tell you which guardian in the store is the most recent, because they all seem ancient to me.
And when are we getting a second ultimate board like the Darkstar one? Probably never, since LoR got downgraded but goddamnit it's frustrating to see Riot pull the plug on the one product I'm still spending money on.
The MMO market is saturated. If Riot really thinks they'll make a hit MMO, they better have something interesting. If not they are just tossing money into the money pit in hopes it leads to infinite money.
They honestly just lack good artists is all - so they end up hiring people that don't play the game or really care for it to patch holes and then you get this mess.
@@defhermann i'd agree but they made arcane and the call only a year ago, they clearly have some of the best in the industry. That makes this cinematic even worse
My god, I just realised the poem is on the same creative level as the "What are we, some kind of League of Legends?" joke.
I don't play league because of the toxicity and also I'm not the best, but I like the Lore and the champions, and stuff like the call and warriors always makes me want to play it because the characters seem so cool, and the way things happen seem so fun, this trailer got me so baffled, like how? how can a company care so freaking little about it's fan base? this actually made me happy I never started league.
I think the butterfly is there to give you a reason to adjust to flying through the rift; something to stabilize to, but once you’re comfortable with the flying POV, they remove it because the butterfly is a tool and they really want you focusing on the rift textures.
You would think that Arcane would inspire Riot to focus more on the story.... But clearly not
Oh yeah now that you mentioned it… aren’t we getting Arcane season 2 this year? Lol
That's probably why this wasn't animated by their usual team. They're busy on arcane 2

If they didn't want to give us a lore cinematic they could have at least done something like their "a new dawn" cinematic. Have random champions fighting on the rift and may be some lines spread in there
When I saw this, in my mind I went "all right, bit average but as a prelude before they drop the actual season 2023 cinematic it's good enough." . Man did I get upset when I learned, this is that cinematic, drained away all my interest in playing league in one fell swoop.

Riot, where is my Xolaani vs Aatrox vs Ryze and Kayle fight in the cinematic?
I honestly don't hate the whole esports angle they keep promoting like others i think there's potential and there's nothing wrong with competitively enjoying league. However the issue becomes so apparent when cinematics becomes this barren and everything other than esports is barely cared for. I think riot forgot just how many people simply enjoys playing league and does not give a fuck about household competitor names.

@@johannavori8698 I think it was a good song but was not appropriate for a worlds anthem. It didn't have quite enough energy. The performance at worlds was close to being a worlds anthem though.
I really liked Skyen's input on this, and I honestly wouldn't blame him if he'd also decide to do a lot more variety content in the future, similarly to how Necrit is planning to. League is just simply not giving a ton of material for its content creators that are focusing their videos around its narrative, or the casual side of its gameplay.
Also, that poem rant was probably the angriest I've heard Skyen in a long while, which is completely understandable. Though there's two more problems with the poem that I'd like to point out:
1 - The kind of player that this is meant is resonate with is not the one that actually gives a crap about champion quotes. Most of them likely have voice lines disabled, since they wouldn't want their tryharding and flaming to be distracted by their chosen meta/OP/free elo/flavor of the month champion monologuing about their backstory. So using them here makes absolutely no sense.
2 - League's gameplay is not dark or serious, and trying to advertise it as such is just frankly... wrong. It's a high action game where you get to do cool and fun stuff, and the majority of Riot's gameplay related videos and trailers all seem to be aware of this (case in point: Wild Rift trailer). It has a dark and serious narrative, sure, but the video in question is not about the narrative now, is it?
I only got into league recently and it was a direct result of the lore. The cinematics, the story, the art...its goal as a marketing strategy definitely worked on me and I ended up giving league a second chance. It's so sad to see this mediocre content come out now. I really hope there is someone in riot that sees how badly taking this path could end up being and yanks it in the other direction
Rewriting up what I had last video since I don't think it should be lost and I will actually expand a bit more onto it.
On the original video from LoL I pitched the idea of a cinematic of Wukong and Yi sparing with one another to start. Wukong is seen getting worn down by Yi as the setting is on top of a hill in Ionia with a single tree near by.
Cut to second story. Twitch getting chased through Zaun by Singed and two of his creations as the rat has something important in his mouth he stole. Trying to get away from his pursuers.
Third story playing out. Akshan has a relic he bought or stole and Samira wants it herself. This leads to the two of them having a fight in a Shurima alleyway.
Cut back to story 1: Wukong looks like he's at his limit and tries to think of how to outdo Yi in this sparing match. He pulls out a satchel of water and instead of him drinking it himself, he waters the tree and gives it a few friendly pats. The tree's roots grow and create an arena around them where Wukong can hide in the said roots and send out clones from all angles as he is able to begin wearing Yi down.
Cut back to story 2: Twitch is forced to fight a giant creature of Singe's and by using his tail to bat a flask of poison in the monster's eyes, he gets caught by Singe by the back of the neck. After some flailing about, he sees he can't escape. So he takes one last shot and fires his bow at the creature's knee, toppling it down onto Singed which gives Twitch the chance to escape before getting crushed. Twitch is then seen on top of a fence giving a wave or joking salute and leaves.
Finally to end Story 3: Akshan and Samira fight it out now on the roof tops of the Shurima town, the relic changing hands as the two fight it out. Then as the two are in close and clashed, they slip, falling down into a market stall. You then see the relic on the ground and a familiar golden gauntlet (Ezreal's) picks it up and walks away, leading to Akshan and Samira to look to one another with a smirk each to imply they were now on the chase together.
The closer leads to not knowing who won between Yi and Wukong as the two are sitting on a root together, watching the sunset on Ionia with a cup of tea in hand.
My entire idea is Story 1: Friends and Rivals. Story 2: Never give up no matter how bleak things look. Story 3: Have fun with your chase for what you're looking for in League of Legends.
Man I love that, you get champs from a lot of different eras, ones that aren't usually in cinematics, a fun spread of regions and the theming is great. Cool idea.
Great idea it makes me happy as a wukong main
This was so 2010 league cinematic core 😻
Nope, 2010 was WAY BETTER.
Putting this in the same playlist with Call, Warriors and Awaken is absolutely crazy 🤓🙏🤓
Xolaani was teased last year cinematic, then introduced in LOR, all the developmets to the darkin saga, when i heard Aatrox was going to be featured in this cinematic, i was excited, my expectations were so high, and they fell, oh so low.
I'm really sad that there wasn't an emoji at the end. i was waiting for that. Actually i was sad before because of the cinematic.
But honestly this cinematic just reinforces my feeling that Riot will eventually become the next Activision Blizzard
I mean, it's a tencent subsidiary already
The already have the multitude of harassment violations from employees, Riot was exposed long ago for trying to cover up the fact that a number of female workers reported misconduct in the workplace. Other forms of harassment like bullying also were a problem listed. People quickly forgot about it because this was around the time that K/DA first came out and gave good press that it completely overshadowed these issues.
LEGENDS OF RUNETERRA HAD 0 FUCKING ADVERTISING IM SO MAD STILL NO WONDER IT FAILED
It’s funny because personally I don’t like the game but ADORE the lore and story so much. Sad to see Riot going in the exact opposite direction.
I love the universe of Runeterra. I can assuredly say I know almost every single detail of it (I tend to be like that with stuff I like very much), better than most people and youtubers I've seen. And man, this is just, so sad. I agree with you, Skyen. And it's sad to give a shit about a universe that the company that's supposed to back it doesn't give a shit at all (I seldom curse but now it seems fitting). Why care if only disappointment will come of it. I am re-reading Ruination now and oh God, I can only hope for the MMO Anthony Reynolds is working on to be better. But LoL itself... Yeah, a piece of shit game with nothing valuable as far as I'm concerned, other than playing with friends sometime, and given how toxic everything is, I think we're better of with any other game for casual play.
This cinematic really shows how this is the year with the biggest budget in League's history, right?
The voice actors don't come cheap
something about the esports stuff and random katarina daggers makes this feel so fanmade and bad
I was obsessed with league lore and secrets for most of my teen years. For the past year i slowly drifted away, especially after the ruination debacle. Fortunately or not, i tried genshin and have been so surprised i could find the same kind of lore and hidden stuff i used to love in league. But now thats gone. Unfortuately the artistic supremacy shifted to hoyoverse rn
I was introduced into league by a friend, I played for a bit but not as much as I do today. I was literally going to be dropping the game fairly quickly due to the negativity from the players in the matches and overall vibe most of the matches had. The literal only reason I didn't is cause the lore made me stick around, cause after watching your video on pantheon playing him made me feel badass, everytime I ulted I was reminded of The Call. The lore, the people that spread the lore, are the reason I stuck around.
Riot may not want to see it but the lore is what seems to bring a LOT of people into league, cause the game itself, besides some satisfying moments, is a pile of shit with champions that are incredibly frustrating to play and fight against, and if it didn't have any lore... I doubt it would be as good as it is right now.
Biggest example I can think of, is mordekaiser, yeah he looks cool, be he already looked cool before, but when you learn his lore his coolness is increased so fucking much, he isn't just the League Sauron, he becomes the Iron Revenant, Twice Slain, Thrice Risen, you get to understand the voicelines, the story, EVERYTHING, becomes more fun.
And it saddens me to see how Riot is stopping to care about stories, even more when Arcane, a series that literally was lore and stories of their characters, is what made so many new people start playing the game and old players return to it. People LIKE lore, people LIKE stories, people DO NOT LIKE, half assed bullshit
They could have at least said something along the line of :
"I will become what I need to be.
Why? Because I must."
Just to add a sense of duty and purpose instead of... "Why? Well, duuuuh!"
When you started playing scenes from The Call instead it really hit me. A YEAR AGO we had one of the best cinematics they’ve ever made.
This cinematic didn’t have ANY FIGHTING. No champions, no lore, not even any references to the new changes made…the “poem” is weird, edgelordy no-lifer vibes.
2022 had a lot of promise and then Riot broke my trust with this game. No lore, no nexus blitz, and they completely changed ARAM’s gameplay during preseason to the point that it’s unenjoyable and plays like a non stop bloodbath where the first 15 minutes of the game don’t matter, rather than the casual mode it was meant to be!
2023 is the death of casual league play for me. Off to VALORANT!
Isn't Valorant also Riot's game?
Leaving League for another Riot game is just proving them right.
But… there’s no casual play in Valorant either…
I mean this makes me worried for Arcane Season 2. You’d think that when the biggest part of them getting noticed was entirely story based they’d double down on that. But nope I guess not.
My cope is that riot is dedicating resources to their other projects, they publish games now, they MAKE other games now, and I think those new games can fill the void that the lack of alternate game modes create, hell maybe the MMO will have masterful storytelling, and maybe the fighting game will be fun
I know you don't necessarily like to be so mad and spewing all this anger etc, but your delivery of your thoughts, the so many amazing analogies and hilarious takes, i can't help but laugh 😂 kärlek broder 🇸🇪❤️🇩🇰
agreed. if he had more content like this, i would listen to it
Again, someone needs to explain to me what's the deal with the 2 dancing trees at 1:18 into the cinematic. It confuses me. Does Riot not watch their cinematics before they publish them ? Nobody noticed during the editing either ? Or maybe it was intentional ? If so, why ?
I mean, this is just my 2 cents but, this is full of champs weapons or the after math of fights. Maybe the trees flapping is ment to be like a janna gust or something? But then there is no animation for the wind itself so maybe a champ with a dash(wu camille, qiyana) would be moving away from baron pit but then they decided to not have any champs at all so they just deleted the champ and forgot about the secondary motion on the trees.
Well, now that you’ve pointed it out I can't stop seeing them. Seriously, what is up with those two random trees just moving like that?
BHAHAHA OMG 😭😭😭
WHAT I've never noticed them before it looks so silly
I feel like ever since maybe 2019, Riot has been slowly gauging how much effort they can strip, and from which parts of the game, while still making a profit. Less reworks, less rotating gamemodes, less unique and diverse skin thematics, less stories released (and the writing quality has been consistently declining), champions with recycled abilities, and now this. On the gameplay side of things, the game keeps getting simpler and simpler, and of course that is by no means a bad thing on its own. But combined with the fact that they focus solely on pro play and sheer volume of skins released, it's becoming more and more obvious that Riot's plan is to essentially say "Hey, look at this massive esport, we're making it easier for you to play so you won't feel discouraged to buy our skins."
the lore is what made me fall in love with league. i can’t believe the numbers are saying people dont care abt it. gonna go cry now while watching the 2019 cinematic on repeat
Definitely feel the same. I've been really disappointed with League recently and this is the straw that broke the camels back. I hope League can come back to its former glory, but I'm feeling a lot more pessimistic and highly doubt League specifically will ever return to what it was. Luckily we have other things like the Forge games, Arcane, and the MMO to look forward too, since I am certainly not looking forward to anything with League of Legends.
Looks like, due to a reason or another, the animation team didn't manage to rise up to the call. I'm betting on the lack of ressources, management really needs to awaken and realize that people are gonna drop league much faster if the art direction isn't there. They may manage the money, but the animators are the true warriors that built this game's universe from dust.
As an old Heroes of the Storm player all this feels so familiar.
i dont blame you man in the slightest, I've been playing league of legends since 2012, and this is the first genuine time I've said this, but, league is actually dying, for real this time, I don't know whats happening behind the scenes, but its nothing good, it hurts to watch happen, this game genuinely saved my life and I will forever be grateful for that, but I'm on the same boat you are, if riot doesn't care, then I guess I won't either. I'm still gonna play the game every once and a while bc I still genuinely enjoy it, but man.. Honestly, I hope you continue to do your own thing, I've been following your content since before you had 100 subs and am really proud of how far you've grown as a creator, regardless of what you cover I'll still be watching, even though I will disagree with you on some stuff I probably shouldnt be getting heated about.
Honestly i haven't touched league in like 6 or 7 years and only engage with it through your videos, and I really enjoy all your non league content so I'm with you while you pivot, it seems like a good choice to me
"What's the theme of this poem? I'm putting my English Teacher Hat on and I'm gonna S*** on this thing..."
This quote made my morning. Thank you for the laughs at work while I fume over this 'cinematic'. I hope you have a lovely day.
It's just astonishing just how far downhill league has managed to go since last year. That cinematic gave me so much hope only for the year to bring a few shitty and disappointing events, near 170 skins and literally nothing fresh or new for the game whatsoever. None of the moments featured in the cinematic actually became part of a big event in league like a lot of people expected, and just ended up being stories quietly posted on LoL universe where only a fraction of the fandom read it. And they proceed to start off the new season with the shittiest season cinematic they've put out in a hot while.
I quit league when I found out they wouldn't even bring back nexus blitz for spirit blossom 2.0 because I saw it as a sign that the execs at riot are just gonna keep getting lazier and lazier when it comes to actually giving the players what they want, and bringing anything new and of value to the game. Sad, but not all that surprised to see it has played out even worse than I expected
i found T B Skyen from league shorts but ive really taken a huge love to your critical eye and well spoken analysis. You have an amazing eye for art and ear for sound. Its really inspired me to look at things more critically, especially video game art when you did skin reviews or pokemon designs. I'm not going anywhere, and I'm excited to see your next projects!
Cinematic was my last hope for Riot and the lore
once again: loved the series of empty skyrim quality environmental shots
First - This video did actually give me motion sickness. I genuinely had to pause it and take a breather lol.
Second - League of Legends is such a profoundly beautiful cinematic masterpiece with characters, settings, relationships and conflicts that truly can be counted as the best video game literature of all time. But when the game is truly an abhorrent experience full of people who give zero shits and those who give too many shits, it becomes too burdensome to worry about. I will still play League on my off day because I enjoy the experience occasionally and have put a moderate amount of money into the game, but I don't want to support the actions the company is taking currently.
As an artist i know this particular series is time consuming, but I do hope you still continue the LoL redesign series! As someone who really wants to dabble into character designing that series was not only entertaining but also gave some good pointers and ideas
Last year we got The Call. I guess this year is supposed to be The Snooze
Guess I’ll be playing this in the background to give you that extra view after seeing it the first time
Same
Somehow this feels more like Riot trying to hype up the competitive aspect if the game, as if they made the cinematic to try and get you hyped with these legendary moments in proplay, that poem and the, genuinely, good looking summoners rift.
But like, why? The reason the cinematics are so loved cause they tell a story or multiple stories about what's happening in runeterra, we get hyped cause we see the champions and see them do cool stuff, see them interact with eachother etc. So I really do not understand why they did this, for some separate Trailer or just for proplay sure but this replacing the big exciting lore cinematics is a major disappointment.
I dislike VERY rarely but this one got me to do it, I was excited to see Aatrox and a followup to last year, not this :/
The fact that right after came the Chinese New Year event cinematic which looks amazing really shows what they're going for LOL
XD... So the darker video was not for aesthetics XD
Lmao i thought my laptop was low on battery
Honestly i think that that poem incapsulates the competitive lol playerbase pretty well
the call and...whatever this is don't feel like they should even be placed in the same category. the call had a great song, beautiful animation, and made me emotional, seeing these champions fighting in the face of adversity, "answering the call". this is just...hi-res summoners rift with a voiceover...they're not even comparable. its like comparing a paper airplane to a hawk
Someone commented in the original video basically saying that the leaf transition after the butterfly disappears doesn't make a lot of sense since all the trees around are needle trees
Riot's disinterest in League of Legends as anything other than an eSport is exactly why I stopped playing almost ten years ago. It's profoundly disappointing to see that has not changed after all that time.
This cinematic is just an RTX on meme... From incredible story of The Call... To this...
This is honestly really sad. The only thing that convinced me to give League a shot back in 2014 when I started was the "A New Dawn" cinematic. I haven't touched the game in months beyond gifting my fiance's little brother. Some RP for Christmas now and I'm never looking back. If Riot won't put in the bare minimum expectation, the precedent that they set for themselves, I can't put any more time energy or money into the game.
I honestly agree with the sentiment. As someone who is very invested in the art and story aspects of the games I play, I feel quite sad knowing Riot doesn't care that much, and more so that Legends of Runeterra is not receiving the attention it deserves.
Still, I am looking forward to your content, be it Elden Ring or something else entirely. Keep up the great work!
Back in the old days some of the best League videos were people dubbing over the cinematics with some absolute bangers in the past (cut to people editing Rengar's roars with cat meows). I made my League account in season 1 and have been consistently playing since season 5 and I gotta tell you I can't even play goofy blind pick games without watching people have a brain aneurysm from raging at each other. I'll watch veteran League players flaming new people trying to learn the game and get told "go learn in bots!". Speaking of bots... Doom Bots, Black Market Brawlers, Invasion, the winter maps, and even Nexus Blitz. All things that gave the player options and a chance to take part in new events! That isn't to say there haven't been fun things in League since it just seems like the soul of the game is no longer there but every now and then you get to see a glimpse of what it used to be.
