  • Xenonauts 2 is the new game we are looking at today with an Overview/Review of what it is and how its gameplay plays. First we will review the need to know basics of Xenonauts 2 before jumping into deeper gameplay impressions. Wage a global war of resistance against an alien invasion. Command turn-based tactical battles, build a network of covert bases, directly control your fighter wings, and achieve strategic victory in a simulation of asymmetric warfare against a technologically superior foe.

    I see on the steam page that this is getting published by Hooded Horse, they have a good history of deep quality games, I am looking forward to this.

    You can not reserve time units for the next turn, but if you leave spare time units equal or more than it takes that soldier to shoot then they "overwatch" the way the face. Facing is important mechanic in this game along leaving time units to defend themselves. Like push 2 cover with 7 or something

    One way to look at the “turtle” game play is thinking of it as bounding. Maybe a good way to balance aggression with patience would be to set some over watch then advance with the rest of the squad? Like sniper and MG watching all others

    You can push aggressive you just need to make sure you have units that can smoke, flash, fire, etc.

    I think this game kind of follows the biggest rule of D&D splitting the team is usually dangerous. I havent played xenonauts 2 yet but assuming thats the case still. Tactically I think it makes sense but video game logic is weird sometimes, still pretty good and dangerous first fight.

    oh whew. It was like 17 hours between Seeker videos and I was starting to worry if something happened to our lad. Anyway, the game refers to the Sectons as having "average" reflexes, but their stat sheet gave them reflexes of 75 -- oof, that's pretty high! That's gotta be why they were shooting at your dudes faster than their overwatch. That blurb can't be right on that part, or, maybe that stat isn't meant to be so high and its a bug?

    How do infantry groups IRL handle this sort of turtling problem?

      Artillery. Occasionally suppressive fire and flank, but if you can get a tank, motors, helicopter... Basically sending explosives up front is better than sending up your body.
      On a small unit tactical level, a squad of 8-12 people is split into two or three fire teams. So it will be say a machinegunner with two escorts/ammo-bearers on one side, a designated marksman or grenadier with assistants on the other, and a lead team/other rifles in the middle. In some cases you'll get an Anti-tank team of one with the launcher and a missile and then two assistants that have a pair of missiles each (those are heavy - the RPG-7 is still popular because you can carry three or four times more RPG warheads than say Javelins or Konkurs) Some members are going to establish a base of fire to keep the enemy suppressed/scared, while another team bounds forward to a better position. This maneuver section can then either kill the enemy, or provide a new fusillade to cover the advance of the first team - bounding overwatch.

      Running in and using your all time units in this game represents booking it 110% and sweating while doing it. The aliens weren't exactly turtling but scarlet was telling his troops that they were on a racing track trying to run top speed on 100 meters right into enemy gunfire.

    Man, no offense, but watching this was difficult. And, AI didn’t act differently, it’s just that you didn’t act intelligently :).
