    Great build! For those that want to take it 1 step further::: after you grind and sand the welds, use a torch to get the joint red hot. Let it cool. The joint will disappear. Makes for a significantly cleaner look. If there are holes or pits after sanding, just fill them in with wed and do it again.

      Modern Builds I work as a Blacksmith and we hide all of our welds. If you’re interested, my instagram has 135 feet of branch railings posted. Every piece of branch was hand forged, welded, ground, sanded, heat treated, wire wheeled clean, then painted. Looks very organic and natural.

    Really dig the welding vids. Breaks the monotony of working only with wood. Mixing up new materials and new techniques keeps it fun. You can slow down the pace of your videos... don't have to race thru jacked on Red Bull. Liked the stylish dark welding segment. Cool!

    Most of the welding I have done is aluminum with a spool gun. There is quite a bit of a learning curve to it especially if you were never taught how to do it. Long story short whenever I do weld steel it actually looks like I know what I'm doing. Lol!

    Don't forget to first tack all the joints together before full-on welding them to prevent the metal from warping out of shape.

    • @ModernBuilds
      @ModernBuilds  6 років тому

      Exactly! I tacked them on one side, flipped it and ran beads along the full joints, then flipped it again and finished out the tacks

    Just wanted to remind any new welders of a few key principals:
    Fusion is important
    Never weld dirty materials to avoid contamination
    If your welds have air bubbles visible it is not structural

  • @Steelcrafted
    @Steelcrafted 6 років тому +7

    Couple tips, 3/4” is way too much stickout for flux core...things will run a lot smoother if you can cut that in half...about 3/8” or so.....also, pick up one of those rubber thread protectors that replaces your nozzle for flux core work...they work great...lastly, try propping one hand/finger on your work piece right near the joint, and use that to support/guide your gun...two hands on the gun just floating in the air with no support is way tough to get good welds...even propping your elbow or forearm on your work piece/table can help a ton to steady you...

    • @ModernBuilds
      @ModernBuilds  6 років тому

      Right on!! good tips!

    • @FurtherFabrication
      @FurtherFabrication 6 років тому

      Came here to say that ^ 'air weld' over the joint to make sure you can hold the nozzle steady (parallel) across the length of the bead. if you can't, change your position/support until you can

    I'm going to have to use this idea for some shelving in the man cave. About the only thing I would do different is run a piece of bar stock across to provide a little more support for each shelf.
    I am planning on using something like this for my record collection.

    Hey Mike ! I want to note that you should think about removing the magnetic triangles when you have tacked the steel in place. It won't keep it from shifting, but the heat from the weld will remove the magnetism (look up 'curie themperature' ). It depends on the design of the product but I had one of those lose magnetism after leaving it on a hot weld. Love your builds !
