    That book still haunts me and it has been has been at least a year.

      I think if I went in blind (and having not read the girl next door), I would have felt the same. At some point in this book, I turned off my emotions because I just felt like it wasn't realistic. I've been reading too much Laymon lately.

      @@Kritz_Reads See, I grew up at that time and I think it is all too plausible. Look up the infamous 1971 Stanford Univ. Psych Dept. Prison Experiment which had to be terminated early because it was going off the rails. And these were college students. I think this is just one of several psych things that the author of LGPatA might have drawn upon.

    I've read both LGPatA and TGND. I found LGP to be more intense. I think LGP is more close to The Lord of the Flies. I see LGP as a allegory warning on how easy people (both kids and adults) can go down a slippery slope to what seems an expedient solution to a problem. I was a teenager in the 70s and yes, thinking was different then on some topics. We saw news reports on the death counts on both sides (like it was a sports game score) of the Vietnam War and saw film footage on the expedited solutions like carpet bombing, napalm, and dusting with highly toxic agent orange. Win at all costs no matter how horrific. I see this book as being somewhat of an allegory of that. That is why books like this could be important as there are even efforts now to return to older gender roles.
    Also I think Johnson stayed to the writing mantra of "describe only, don't explain." I've thought about this book and think some readers miss what's going on between the lines, under the surface, etc. But I can't explain without giving away spoilers.

      Thank you for sharing that point of view in that time period. I thought it was just pulp that tried to sound deep at the end, but what you say makes sense.

    The concept of the gifts while reading the book is soooo cool but such a bummer the book wasn't good.

      It is def. an immersive experience, and is always giving you a mini "goal" to get to when reading. Once upon a book club box does the same thing, and has different genres.

    Wow, what a thumbnail. The stuff of nightmares. I'm digging the new theme music (though I hope you haven't permanently retired the old one; that one was super catchy). Nice concept with the targets and the gifts. The book lost me at gift #4 (though I don't think I ever would have read this). Great job with the video though. Cool concept!

      I loved my old music, but sadly discovered that I cannot use it now that my channel is monetized. I would have gladly paid the artist for it, but it seems that isn't an option 😢. The gifts def. went downhill with the book. It was an odd book to use for this concept, because not much was involved in the plot.

    Awesome vlog! You have persuaded me to read The Girl Next Door as opposed to this book, which does sound seriously nasty and disturbing. I did want to read this book, but I think this review makes me think that might not be a good idea. A book needs a story, plot and this seems devoid of one.

    • @Kritz_Reads
      @Kritz_Reads  Місяць тому +1

      The girl next door is also extremely disturbing....but it is well-written, and has more going on. It is also based on a true story, so it doesn't feel like reading torture for no reason whatsoever.

    • @henrytjernlund
      @henrytjernlund 13 днів тому

      I disagree. Just like The Lord of he Flies can be an important read, so can LGPatA. Ketchum had much more writing experience under his belt and was basing TGND more directly on an actual crime. I think LGPatA is more intense and there is more to be learned from it. TGND has a higher authority (adult) antagonist. LGP does not. It's a peer group in isolation left to their own devices.

    I've watched the movie adaptation of The Girl Next Door, but I haven't read the book. I've heard a lot about Let's Go Play at the Adams' but have never read it. I appreciate this in-depth review. Based on your thoughts about the book and the author information, I'll pass. Thanks for reading this one so I don't have to😆 I've never heard of Down the Rabbit Hole Subscription Box, but I am super intrigued by the premise.

      I'm not sure I can watch that movie adaptation, though I'm sure they don't show a lot of things on screen. Reading that author info had me rolling my eyes. Out of his entire life, THAT is what was shared?

      I was very surprised to see this book in one of their boxes! I also hope they return, they have a great concept and focus on dark books. I wish they would use more lesser-known books so that they aren't ones that have already been read.

      Yes, hated them too. But adults do nearly the exact same kinds of things.

    I always thought this book sounded similar to the Sylvia Likens case. I haven’t read this and I’m not going to. I don’t care for gratuitous extreme horror that lacks plot either. I like the idea of having little gifts to open while reading 🎁 Lil Gus Gus is looking cute back there!

    • @Kritz_Reads
      @Kritz_Reads  Місяць тому +1

      Once upon a book club does the gifts while reading as well. This one was a bit of a weird choice to do that to, as not a lot is going on in the book other than inner thoughts and torture. Love Gus gus!

    • @henrytjernlund
      @henrytjernlund 13 днів тому

      LGPatA has plot, has motives, you just need to think about it. In fact each kid had their own motive for continuing the prank. There is a writing mantra "describe only, don't explain." LGP follows that. If you expect everything to be explained, you'll miss key things.

    You read this!?!?!?! I still get angry thinking of this and those fricken kids. Wow that box concept is so unique hahaha I need to sub. Somehow the book is so boring but also so maddening. I spot gus gus in the backgrounddddddd. I agree about the difference between this book and The Girl Next Door. Think The Girl Next Door is well written but Let's Go Play misses the mark in the writing. It tries to be so philosophical but fails at doing that in my opinion. The ending of this book still makes me so mad.

      I watched your review (and Olly's) last night after I finished this video. Baby Kelsi from years ago! I don't think you can shove poetic "philosophical" thoughts in at the end and act like this book had more meaning than it actually did. You need to have that throughout. It was hard for me to be shocked at the ending when they talked about it for half the freaking book! I'm not sure why this book has so much hype.

      I think the recovered alcoholic Johnson was slipping back into drinking as he wrote LGP. And that would explain some of the odd prose. But I still say there is a useful read there. There is a warning about how easy it is to descend that slippery slope into horror.

      Good choice. The girl next door was horrifying, especially since an adult was encouraging things....but they had obvious mental issues. This one was just for no reason that could make sense.

    I'll be straight forward, this is not the best review, neither is it the worse. It's in the middle.
