This was such a heavy chat I must say. I am from Namibia and we do not have this culture or tradition of living with our in-laws once we get married, so I learned a great deal from this chat. Mokoena you really demonstrated immense maturity and strength to endure the living arrangement. On a different note, it saddens me to see how our African cultures continue to demand so much from a wife. Imagine being a PG student and having all that weight to carry at home - its a lot but you did it with so much grace - I am wowed. Thanks for sharing this with us and for being absolutely candid. Thanks Buli for handling the interview so well.

Yoh Buli you tap into the "taboo" aspects of marriage the uncomfortable aspects of marriage, the ones that lead to ending marriages but you get people who are victorious over that agg needed this we need this maturity

  • @mrspboledi

Shooo she is right, we don’t usually think about the family dynamics going into marriage and I know that when I realised that it wasn’t just gonna be about us two it was already a month into marriage and there was that bit of a reality check.

This Hits Home..What I really took from this is that “everything has an expiring date”, that is very powerful n consoling. I know how it feels coming to a marriage young hoping that it’ll only be you and hubby only to find out that no! no! he is coming with his family. It is very painful, depressing at times but how you handled things Mrs Mokoena is amazing. Truly you’re a strong woman.

I honestly commend this young lady for her patience and compromise and how she gracefully dealt with this situation.
Most men dont disclose their real relationship with their parents which actually is to be a grown boy that brings them a servant / maid to join the family. No mother would treat their own daughter like that...cook each night.
Black parents to encourage their children ( boys) to be independent and form their own identities with their wifes in their new marriages.

Wow. I've learned so much from this- so insightful. I know she doesn't feel like she's been married for 4 years, but that experience is part of her marriage- it doesn't detract from her marriage at all. It was a season of her marriage and they've come through it stronger. No two marriages are the same. God bless you both x

I have a similar experience and I've only been married for 5 months but I promise you I've been through hell and back. I woke up one day and next thing we living with the in laws and he's lost his job 😩yho I saw fireworks, and culturally and spiritually my in laws and I are on different journeys and have different revelations of God. So listening to this has given me hope and faith that God will see me through this and everything has a season. Thank you so much for this ❤️

Love and light to you sis. 🤍

Personally, I refused to kotiza, I view it too negatively to go through it and not come out bitter at the end.
I respectfully laid boundaries and that worked well for us. We made up for it by visiting as often as we could, and spending the whole day (consecutive days) there most times. But just never actually sleeping there. I really could never hey.

    • @Thandi899

@@kgomotsodikobe4875 Maybe they are. But the most important thing was my husband’s understanding of my stance on the matter and he’s buy-in. Turns out it wasn’t a big deal for him whether I did or didn’t.
Wouldn’t make sense for me to expose myself to something I knew I would need healing from. And as a result, it definitely would have negatively affected my marriage. So even if they had called all the uncles in the world to sit me down, I would still have declined. But they did make it easy for me, I realize that now and I’m grateful 😅♥️.
Also my dad would have had a fit had I agreed. He’s counseled lots of couples who had had to divorce because of staying with their in-laws.

I'm currently that wife hammering the husband let's move let's go to our own place. This discussion hit home and eish thank you for sharing and being so open and graceful. I think we need to appreciate that we spend all our lives with our birth mothers so we get to have time to adapt to them and adjust to their ways even when we don't agree because also there is a dependency on them.
With mother in laws it's different because the adjusting is done in adulthood when we are already set in our ways.
That's why I appreciate mother's in law that are understanding and allow the makotis to be because it's a huge adjustment for them too. Not only are they letting go of caring for their son but must accept another woman's way of doing things for him.

This is such an important and insightful conversation. In the isiXhosa culture, it is expected for uMakoti to move in with her in-laws for a period of 6 months - to learn the rules and regulations of the home, their beliefs, culture, principles and how they do life as well as to do Makoti duties. Irrespective of where you are in life in terms of finances and stability. It was so interesting to hear this story and learn from it. I love how honest and open Mrs. Moekoena was in sharing her story. It really opened and broadened my mind and thinking. Thank you Sis Buli for this insightful topic! All my love, Nox 💋
