20+ years ago I scoffed at my local fly shop owner getting propellers in his shop. Somehow, he convinced me to give them a try. The only pattern I used them on was a smallish white bugger! It was deadly fished on a fly rod for trout and smallies! Lesson learned.
Just found this video because my dad sent it to me, and he happens to be the man who you talked about in the vid that owns and makes Pistol Pete’s lol. thank you for covering our flies!!!
Fly or Lure? Let’s not get hung up on definitions. Let’s remember it’s about learning what works and sharing that knowledge. It’s all about the pleasure of fishing. Thank you for sharing this Matt. Looks like a fish catcher to me. Have a great weekend my friend. God bless.
I had to chuckle when I saw this pattern, but you can't take away from its popularity and effectiveness. Have a wonderful weekend, and thank you for sharing.
Hey Matt, I tie a propeller yellow perch pattern in New Hampshire for trout and have gotten a lot of trout over the years and still do. I’ve also tied a brown beetle using a coffee bean that came from fly tyer magazine. That pattern got so many trout I had people ask me what I was using to catch them. My buddy’s and I will try any material. We’ve even messed around with fake nails that made a Johnson’s silver minnow type of spoon fly. 😂😂😂. And the “Mop fly” shows that no material should be overlooked.
Good Morning Sir Matt, Very well done. As a beginner fly tyer our hobby has many branches. Freshwater, Saltwater , flies and lures, some lures even use blades and bucktail. My passion is trout , but living in Texas I have to plan out of state trips. I started using a bubble and pistol Pete because it caught fish I've yet to try it on a fly rod but they work and are deadly. I tied one with sparkle rainbow embroidery thread and black Marabou with no instructions. It worked and caught me trout all day long, Thanks Matt thumb up for me 👍😊
One of my favorite flies, Matt Right after the fish have been stocked, it's about the only thing they will hit Thanks for the video Matt and hope you have a great weekend
I've been tying for about a year now. I make a lot of odd looking flies because I don't always have the right materials called for in your videos and others. My brother and I spend two or three weeks throughout the summer fishing the high mountain lakes in southern Wyoming and he gives me a lot of grief over those odd looking flies, but I always out-fish him! This year, he showed up with some of those propeller flies and we had a great laugh about them. I don't think he caught a single fish with them. It's not a pattern I will probably tie, but I still enjoyed the video. I may try the bumblebee part of the video. I tie micro chenille bees in various colors, and they were very popular with the brookies and cutthroats this summer. I'll be adding more to my boxes over the winter in preparation for next summer.
Hey Matt. Awesome video. I actually got to meet the inventor of this fly. My really good friend's girlfriend at the time worked with him at the Dept of Corrections in Buena Vista CO. We used to go over to his house and hang out and tie flies. Such a great time. We would take the flies and go fish them on the Arkansas River and the local lakes/ ponds the next day.
What a great comment Rick! It's always nice to hear something personal about a pattern I tie on here that I've only read about in books. I appreciate the note my friend. :-)
This is a fly that I thouht was a joke everytime I saw it in WalMart. However when it was recomended to me for fishing one of our Colorado reservoirs I thought I would give it a try. Wow! I was amazed as I caught trout after trout as I trolled it behind my float tube. Whether fished on a fly rod ( my favorite) or with a fly and bubble rig on spinning gear, it's a winner. Thanks for your great channel, I enjoy it and your lively tying instruction.
Fun pattern Matt. I can def tie me this up in a bigger pattern for some saltwater fishing. However I would definitely put some had cement on top of that bead in case those cross wraps get chewed up and loosen the bead.
Crazy bug Matt☕️☕️ I never seen a propeller on a bug but ya know why not. And another thing we all started with a spinning rod. Unless you’re a mythical creature, born with a fly rod in your hand. We all imitate bugs and creatures that spinning anglers use. A frog is not a fly and neither is a mouse. But we throw them all kinds of poppers. And don’t tell anyone but I use my spinning rod still🤣🤣🤣we can learn a lot from all anglers. Keep them coming can’t wait😜
Some of my favorite "flies" to try are jig head flies for spinning rods. Sometimes spinning rods are just better like when I am on a fishing/camping trip at Powell with 6 family members on a small boat with all our gear.
What an interesting idea! I sometimes try different patterns by what I see people brave enough to share. Thank you Matt, I appreciate you fueling my autism mind (I have Asperger’s)for better and unique fly patterns! Tight lines! 😎🎣
I remember hearing about this fly years ago. With all the materials we put on flies these days I don't think a propeller makes any difference. A fly it is! I would think Smallmouth would love it.
Well, since Wapsi's tag line is "Quality Fly Tying Materials Since 1948" this pattern must be a fly. I guess it's one you would need to retrieve very fast to make sure the propeller spins. Maybe if you used that propeller and put some wings with it you could call the fly "The Airplane". But seriously, it's a neat fly whether folks think it's a fly or not. I just wouldn't use it on a bamboo rod with a silk line they might spontaneously combust. Keep the good stuff coming Matt.
Its funny, i was just telling a buddy about pistol petes on wednesday as i was organizing one of my tackle boxes. I was first introduced to this pattern by my dad around 19 years ago in Colorado. I first used this fly behind a bubble and have used them for trout ever since that day. Thanks for sharing Matt, i look forward to the new patterns and content each week.
Thanks for sharing, Matt. I forgot about that one. I think it's fly, more so than a squirmy wormy for example - or even those so-called flies that are more like a jig!
I've even seen "flies" that are just a plastic egg glued to a hook! Now, I do tie and use egg flies, such as the eggstacy egg (got my first steelhead on the fly rod with it), sucker spawn, nuke egg. But to call that thing a fly is absurd to me
Absolutely an excellent pattern. I use both a fly rod and a spinning setup. Fly Tying is about enjoying a sport and a hobby. Tying a unique fly to a fly rod is still fly fishing.
I never understood people who judge other peoples' choice of fly. Some people will see someone using this, a mop fly, or an egg pattern, and they'll act like the person is using powerbait or something 😂
First off: Who cares what it is called? The only issue for me is "will it catch fish the way I intend to fish it?" Having said that, I guess what you call it depends on how you intend to fish it: If you put it under a bubble and use spinning gear it is probably more accurate to call it a lure (if that matters to you). If you tie it onto the working end of a fly line I'm pretty sure it is accurate to call it a fly! As a young'un more than 60 years ago I remember my dad tying something very much like that on the end of my baitcasting rig under a bubble (we called them bobbers back then) at our favorite lake and it most certainly caught fish! Thanks for sharing, Matt.
Thanks Matt for putting this one out there. Panfish love this and "Fly or Lure", many variations on this concept definitely catch fish.... one thing is for certain, it's a real tippet twister !!! 🤣
That fly is similar to what people around here use called a Joe's fly. Many moons ago I used a fly like that on a spinning outfit. It caught me a rainbow trout of 12-14 inches. That was the only time I fished that type of fly, I enjoy fishing regular fly,and nymphs so much that's what I stick with. Enjoyed watching. 👍
Good morning Matt. ☕️time. Fly or lure it doesn’t matter much to me. It looks like it would be fun to tie and fish. I think some of the flies I see getting tied are jigs and a person could even argue that the iconic Wooly Bugger could be construed as a jig. If you are fishing regulated fly only waters then you should make sure you are using what the regulation defines as a fly. Definitely need another ☕️today. Temp this morning was 23F and I’m still going fishing tomorrow. Highs are forecasted to be low 60’s so it will be decent on the water. Take care Matt and have a great weekend.
Great fun tie. Been fishing it for river smallies for 50 years. We always referred to it as a "fly rod lure". No matter what you call it, just deadly on the river. Non-pro tip: I like to fit a small bead in front of the blade behind the hook eye to ensure a smooth spin.
I would of put a smaller bead in front of the propeller then the bigger bead and shortened the gap between the beads for better rotation, just a suggestion.😊
Thanks Bob! I tried it out for a few minutes and believe it or not, it didn't take much current at all to make the blade spin. Now I didn't catch anything with it, but that probably wasn't because of the fly. :-)
Heck yeah..I’d throw that all day every day. It’s as much of a fly as my 6” foam-headed bullfrog patterns (I don’t call them flies 😂) I use for largemouth. The local flyshop owner is 90, he sells little spinner blades like on a roadrunner for flys. He doesn’t use them but says they were on flies when he was young. Some things we Think are new aren’t really new at all. Thanks Matt. Might go propel some up! Have a great weekend! 👍🎣👌
Hi Matt. Thank you for doing this pattern. I know it's controversial but a friend has asked me to tie some for her. I'm trying to get restarted into tying again. My motor skills are alot to be desired as I was in a bad bike accident. This would b a good test/therapy for my motorskills. I have friends who use bobber n spin gear with flies successfully. I don't as I love the esthetic and serenity of fly fishing. Thank you again for tackling this controversial fly of sorts. God Bless n Fish 🐟 on!
The nouns portion of Webster’s Dictionary describes a “fly” as “a fishhook dressed (as with feathers or tinsel) to suggest an insect”(apparently excluding streamers?). Since this has feathers and tinsel, this must be a “fly,” even though it appears to be more like a minnow than an insect. If it deceives the fish and you can cast it with a fly rod, why not tie it and use it.
Got some propellers and will be tying some for spin fishing with a bubble when fly casting is impossible or low clarity calls for a sonic attractor, but with fly casting gear I'm not a big fan due to their high resistance in the water, way overloading the rod at the beginning of a backcast.
And you know, I took this out for a test and was totally surprised at how little current it took to make it spin. I'm not sure this size propeller on this size fly made a lot of noise though. But it definitely gave it a silver flash up front.
The Bleeding Bee #10 is 1 of 3 Flies that Pistol Pete calls the "Stingers" the other 2 are the Tiger Wasp #10 & the Red Hornet #10...check them out in their website! Really cool flies and they are all Killers!
Thanks, Matt. I’ve rigged streamers behind a small spinner blade on both fly and spinning rods, and it works well. I’ll give the propeller a try. Frank
Hey Matt. No doubt about it, a spinning blade catches trout like nothing else. Added to a well made fly just makes that fly even better. I’ve personally haven’t tied with any, but that doesn’t mean it’s beneath me, it’s just a matter of time. Here in NJ, I watched a guy consecutively catch about 20 stocked trout in a fly fishing only location using a Mepp’s spinner with a woolly bugger behind it. Now that’s questionable. Great topic.
Are these the same purist that have no problem using tungsten beads, D-ribs, chenille, mylar tubing, crystal flash and nymphs skins latex? The fish don't care if there's a prop on the fly, why should we? 🤣
If this fly with a propeller is not fly tying, we need to exclude spinning blades added to the fly or flys with rattles as well. I'm ok to say that it is all fly tying, including gluing stuff to a hook with thread.
Lots of your ties don't fit the narrow definition of classic trout flies. Beads, eyes, ltungsten wire and flat ribbon, propellers, soft plastics, etc. These are all modern additions to the fly tying bench. No harm or foul. Unless it requires a spinning rod to cast, they're all flies. My favorite multi-application trout fly is called a JOE'S FLY. That's the name brand. It is no one specific tie. They are commercially sold by that name. They are just a size 12 or 10 wet fly with a Hillebrand in-line Colorado spinner infront of the hook eye. They can be hard to find in shops or online. Almost weightless, they can be fished with a fly rod, spinning rod, or Tenkara. Very popular in PA. Prolly Maryland too.
Sorry Matt. It's not a fly. Might be a great lure. I guess I'm a traditionist. I've been on the fence for years if a San Juan worm was a "fly" Same with egg patterns. Nothing wrong with lures. I have tied numerous bass lures using fur and feather on my vice. A coot looks like a duck but isn't one. Thanks for the video
Ahhhh... you know you might be right! I didn't even think of that. I typically don't like to wrap thread over a bead anyway, just because it looks shoddy. Seriously, what’s the difference between the metal bead and the propeller spinner blade. If you’re going to complain about the blade then you can’t use the bead or tinsel or synthetic dubbing. If you want to be a purist, great, just don’t denigrate people for using something that doesn’t hurt trout anymore than your #16 Adams.

Mr Controversial Matt. Love it. And great looking fly too. Thanks.

I’ve recently tied a few myself in black and olive. To me it’s basically a woolly bugger with a propeller.
What an interesting idea! I sometimes try different patterns by what I see people brave enough to share. Thank you Matt, I appreciate you fueling my autism mind (I have Asperger’s)for better and unique fly patterns! Tight lines! 😎🎣

Cool. I’ve never used a propeller. Guess that needs to change. Looks like a fun tie and fun to fish. Have a great weekend. Thx Matt
Great Vid, Matt! Once again you've tied a great fly. And got us thinking outside the box. Well done!
Thanks for sharing, Matt. I forgot about that one. I think it's fly, more so than a squirmy wormy for example - or even those so-called flies that are more like a jig!

A Joe's fly is basically a rooster tail, but with a wet fly/streamer on the end of it
Nice fly, and I will tie a couple to have in my box. I don't know if they will work but will let you know. Thanks, Matt

Matt, that is quite the fly! You could try to put a propeller on a vertical post and have a drone fly.....Have a great weekend.
Remember Dundee using dynamite in the harbor? Use whatever you like up to that point and you're good. Check the Regs before tho....
I never saw this before
I would of put a smaller bead in front of the propeller then the bigger bead and shortened the gap between the beads for better rotation, just a suggestion.😊
Interesting fly!
Add one more to the “it’s a fly” crew. DNR definitions be damned, I maintain it’s a fly!
BFF!
That's a great fly!! Used one similar year's ago with good results. Can't wait to try it!!

You need to do a video about spinner blades for flies. Wapsi makes them as well. It’s a swivel connected to a Colorado blade.
Patterns are one thing.
Since animals do *not* have mechanical features, this one trends more towards "lure" than "fly".
“Animals “don’t have feathers and foam either yet I didn’t see anyone complain about the foam hoppers.
@@fredrickwaldon1579 Birds are animals are they not!? lol wtf
Pistol Pete Bleeding Bee #10
I think that’s is class . Fly not a fly there is always room for a little change 👍

I like propellers. It's goofy looking but actually works pretty well.
And you know, I took this out for a test and was totally surprised at how little current it took to make it spin. I'm not sure this size propeller on this size fly made a lot of noise though. But it definitely gave it a silver flash up front.

Thanks, Matt. I’ve rigged streamers behind a small spinner blade on both fly and spinning rods, and it works well. I’ll give the propeller a try. Frank
Well thank you Frank! I appreciate the note my friend. :-)
Would be great on a Saltwater pattern. I've seen old wet flies tied with a propeller
Hey Matt. No doubt about it, a spinning blade catches trout like nothing else. Added to a well made fly just makes that fly even better. I’ve personally haven’t tied with any, but that doesn’t mean it’s beneath me, it’s just a matter of time. Are these the same purist that have no problem using tungsten beads, D-ribs, chenille, mylar tubing, crystal flash and nymphs skins latex? The fish don't care if there's a prop on the fly, why should we? 🤣
I think a propeller could make a cutthroat fly deadly. I'm getting some! Thank you!
If this fly with a propeller is not fly tying, we need to exclude spinning blades added to the fly or flys with rattles as well. I'm ok to say that it is all fly tying, including gluing stuff to a hook with thread.
Crazy how here in Canada (BC) to get one they cost 20$ , so hard to justify it .
Who cares as long as you are having fun. There are some fly only waters that exclude it.
That's cool
To much like a lure to me but what do I know lol .
If you use a fly rod with a rooster tail, is it a fly as well? I mean, it DOES have feathers... LOL
If someone wants to limit themselves regarding a label that's their choice. Me... i want to be creative and hopefully catch fish.
Looks like a flyalure to me. Just sayin.
I don't care what fly or jig or whatever you use so long as you learn to properly release a fish.
😲 Oh no! What will the purists say?
NO
I'm gonna throw a fit......but only because of your thread over bead tactic. Prop spinning on thread is going to break the thread. 😢
Ahhhh... you know you might be right! I didn't even think of that. I typically don't like to wrap thread over a bead anyway, just because it looks shoddy. But I find myself getting lazy sometimes if I need the bead set back from the eye. A bigger bump under it and some super glue would probably be a better option.
