Just a Tip.. When using flies in fast water...Do Not put on a Split Shot. Cast upstream..let the fly drift naturally. The fast water will automatically suck the fly down into the strike zone.
Years ago I went on a long hike into a lake in Olympic mountains WA state. Camped at a lake for 3 days and tried spinners, spoons, salmon eggs, etc. Couldn't get a bite but could see nice sized rainbows swimming by. Finally on the last day we got some sunshine and I got a brain storm to remove the fly from a rooster tail spinner and throw it out there with a bobber. Slammed! Caught about 5 trout in 20 minutes then the sun went down and called it a day. Flies were the ticket. This technique stayed with me and yes, fly and bobber will take trout and some other fish as well.
I did a video on the epic trout magnet the periwinkle. You should try it. The fish love them and they stay a live in the water. You can find them in streams and rivers on rocks or logs. Take off the rocks near the head and pull it out.
Though I'm a fly fisherman..I have used this method hundreds of times, especially when I'm with friends that are not fly fishing. It's also an Awesome backpacking setup. An ultralight telescoping rod, flies, a bobber and a few weights.
Not in my experience. Maybe downstream from the hatchery or where trout are fighting for everything that emerges. In super clear water and medium to heavy fishing pressure it’s just not gonna work. Trust..
@@renatolaranja3834 Well, I've had this method work. Must admit I generally only use a bobber if the river is impossible to bounce in the bottom from constant snags.
I use a Pistol Pete with a slip-style water bobber. This works great for not getting caught on bottom (reeds, dirt), and for snagging those buggers that like to eat bugs near the upper water column. 1) I use a 5' mono leader for my fly line, and tie it to a barrel swivel. 2) From the barrel swivel , I throw a bead on, then water bobber (slip style) , then another bead. For this line make it about 6 - 8 inches. 3) Finish the line with loop or swivel, your preference, then connect to the main line. I just recently caught a 19" Rainbow Trout with this setup.
This would be cool to see on big fish too. Whenever flys are used with spin gear, usually shown around smaller stuff. Works on biggns' too. Great video as always. I do appreciate you all making it, love this stuff.
Thanks for sharing the tips and the text re the timing and no luck in catching fish in your video! Most videos I have seen people catching fish easily all the time while I do not, which was frustrating sometimes. It is good to see that it was not only skills but also luck that made a fishing day!
Fly fisherman, love y'alls content even if I don't spin fish for trout. Best results for this kind of fishing is going to be fishing what we call nymphs or soft hackles. Best choice for flies are gonna be Copper Johns, Hare's Ears, Pheasant tails, and flashy fellas like the rainbow warrior. Buy tungsten beadhead versions and you can forego the split shot below the bobber entirely which makes it better to cast and fish dead drift. Most rivers in Washington allow double nymph rigs so use a very small diameter fluorocarbon tied with a fishermans knot to shank of a bigger fly, about 18 inches below put a smaller fly of a different pattern. Good luck out there
I do it just a little bit different. I put a clear bobber full of water in between two swivels then a 2ft liter. This is great for fishing lakes with a lot of vegetation
I have had very good success with Pistol Petes and actually any dry/ wet/ streamer fly, but not on the stream. Next time I will be sure to employ your techniques. Last week I went to Pyramid Lake to try to tempt a LCT to hit some large Pistol Pete's I have and I'm pretty sure I need to set my leader longer like 6-7 feet. One of my bucket list items. Love the videos'!
Those pistol Pete's are severely underrated. I like to set up above the hole with them and put a split shot on my line and then just let it spin in the hole kinda like plunking.
Awesome, don't forget some dry shake if you using a dry fly to keep it on the surface. This method is even better than fly fishing, especially with a water bobber to get some big distance if on a lake! Fly fishing is fun but hard for beginners, this is the perfect crossover
There are 2 major types of flies. Dry flies which float in the surface and wet flies which sink. Popular wet flies include nymph flies like the hare’s ear nymph or bead head pheasant tail nymph. Both are general imitation flies and my go to nymphs. Caught hundreds of trout on both.
I'll try this rigging out at Mayfield Lake early in the morning. Lots of giant trout jumping between 5:30AM to 9AM. Can't wait to try it. Thank you for this video.
one of my favorite ways of catching fish is a fly on a spinning rod! I have walked through log jams on a lake and literally just dropped the fly on the surface and watched those brook trout come a runnin boy!
Can I make a request that when you make videos on small creeks you ask your audience to pinch their barbs? These tiny trout get really beaten up when inexperienced anglers struggle to pop a barbed hook. It's easy enough to land a fish on barbless and it keeps fish count up on small water.
Hey, aspiring trout fisherman here (I say aspiring cuz in the few times I went out, got skunked lol). I've been directed to a few small creeks in my mission to catch trout, and I had never considered the idea that the barb might actually be really bad for the fish! Considering that, in all due likelihood, I'm gonna be catching and releasing them... improving their survival odds is gonna be a more pressing concern. Thank you for this.
There’s one fly and one fly only you need to get ahold of for trout/summer Steelies under a float: the Squirmy Wormy. It absolutely destroys trout (compared to other nymphs and bugger type flies I’ll get about double the hookups.) Walmart won’t have em since their kinda a specialty but you can find them at a fly shop usually or definitely online. I’ll even tie some up and mail them to you just hit me up!
I feel your pain. We have a foamy place in the creek I fish in and I have a hard time getting it WAY over there to the foamy area and then, hard to set hook if I get a bite. Going to try your setup. Thanks!!
I fish with bubble bobbers and flies in the locale reservoir. 60% of the time the trout hit or play with the bobber and ignore the fly. 🤣 5:18 Looked like a bobber hit.
As I learn to fish for trout, I've come to suspect that trout are not only visually line-shy but also tactilely so. If you watch videos of trout underwater in streams you see them tasting all kinds of stuff lightning-fast, and most of those would not even come close to translating as a hit to a heavy split-shot, then visibly moving a bobber, before it's all over and done, especially if the trout feels the mass or resistance with its mouth. So I rig with the attempt to minimize the mass and slack between me and the fish, and try to keep the proverbial tight line to feel a soft take and/or keep an eagle eye for a change in the droop of the line to go for a hook set. With a fly rod, that looks more or less like "euro-nymphing" and has worked very well for me; with a fly and bubble, that could perhaps be accomplished with a slip-bobber and a bobber stop to maintain a minimum leader length to the bobber. Jury's out on the latter, but it's looking encouraging so far.
I'm a big fan of these lures, and Joe's Flies also.. they seem to catch fish after fish after fish.. could just throw out everything else and just use those and theyll catch them if they're there.
What i use is a 5 ft 6 lb floro leader from my mainline and on the end of the leader a dry fly. Than like 2-3 ft above that a single small splitshot. I basically side drift it and sometimes i will kinda twitch it
Thanks for this vid. I spin and fly fish but haven't tried to fish a bubble fly setup in a stream. I live in the Sierras so gonna try it. I think I'll also add a no knot type fly clip so that switching flies is a snap (pun)
Don't forget tell mr. Jordan that I'm ready for my sponsorship I need an addicted fishing shirt sweatshirt in one of those Okuma rods don't forget throw in a addicted hat
Suggestion for content. Tie a fly and catch a fish on it. Buy a cheap fly tying vice and bobbin. Watch a few videos on tying a "hares ear nymph". Buy only the materials you need. Video tying the nymph. Catch a fish. People would love this video.
I use your techniques for trout fishing under the bobber I love trout fishing now since I started catching them last year I've been addicted to them now but no matter what I do they always swallow the hook bottom or bobber
Ive never had a fish stike a fly and not get hooked the normaly grab it then turn and hook themselves in the corner of the mouth then its up to me to keep the right amount of tension on them while pulling them in
The spin fly is a Pistol Pete and the winged ant is Creme. Yes both at Walmart
Yeah pistol Pete's are in Walmarts around here. We use theme alot in NM for trout In both lakes and streams.
@@MichaelRomero Yes, we do..
Hooking up with fish is just the icing, spending the day in such beautiful surroundings is what its all about.
Just a Tip..
When using flies in fast water...Do Not put on a Split Shot.
Cast upstream..let the fly drift naturally. The fast water will automatically suck the fly down into the strike zone.
just a cheap bobber and a fly, nothing fancy. that's nice. I like that ill have to try this
Thank you for that tip

Even with a bobber?
Thank you for this video.
P.S. how did you know i was an addict?? Do you know my sister or something?

It's good to know that everyone has one of those fishing days. Thanks for staying positive 😉
In about 30 outings I've only ever had 'those fishing days'
Fall is almost here. can’t wait for the trout to return for a fishing session. In the northeast anyways
I did a video on the epic trout magnet the periwinkle. You should try it. The fish love them and they stay a live in the water. You can find them in streams and rivers on rocks or logs. Take off the rocks near the head and pull it out.
At least you keep it real, that’s why I like your channel!
Though I'm a fly fisherman..I have used this method hundreds of times, especially when I'm with friends that are not fly fishing.
It's also an Awesome backpacking setup. An ultralight telescoping rod, flies, a bobber and a few weights.
Agreed. Coming from the other side, not a fly fisherman, but in Idaho this is a common lure setup. Telescopes all the way.
Not in my experience. Maybe downstream from the hatchery or where trout are fighting for everything that emerges. In super clear water and medium to heavy fishing pressure it’s just not gonna work. Trust..

Really digging the new look to the vids!
You guys have taught me so much. And it definitely DOES work.

This is a very relatable fishing video. I enjoy the realism.

This method does work! Caught my only native rainbow years ago in Yellowstone using it!
Part 2 woohoo I've been waiting for this.
Marlin sets the hook like a steelhead fisherman.
We call those flies Pistol Pete’s. All different patterns work. Seems like dark colors work best here but we have lots of algae in the water.
Loved the video you guys are the best!!!
I will try this over the weekend in the Sierras. Thanks!
The demonstration was great. You and everyone else needs to learn the types of flies that are on those waters to be successful.
This is the video I've been looking for thanks guys.

When the bobber sinks just lightly pull up somewhat quickly. #DontbeMarlin😂😂😂
Realistic. Fly. Look. So. Real. Happy. Fishing
Look. On. Line. For. Realistic. Flys
Once we get some good rain, the summers from the river that creek dumps in to will be at that spot😍
Really effective caught a couple lighting trouts with this ...big thank you 👍
Pistol Pete. Ginger is my favorite color. Great fly lure combo
Let’s goo noti squad. Thanks adx
This creek looks so so familiar
Thanks for sharing marlin
Gonna try this with my daughter this weekend!

Love the video.. awesome set up! I got the same problem with missing hook sets with bobbers..
You know you've watched a lot of ADX when you go to thumbs up and it's already been clicked 🙌
Liked the video Marlin. You could also learn how to fly fish and present flies in a more natural manner. But whatever works! Keep fishing!!!
Love the tutorials on this channel, now I just need to get on the water
Hey addicts we started fishing this with a shrimp fly for sea trout in pei and we caught fish over 2 to 5 pounds and bigger so thanks again

keep up the good content guys
I always feel bad when Marlin misses fish bites. I know the feeling. Great video. Thank you!
I feel like he is setting that hook waaay too hard for some small trout.
Thanks for the tip it helps
We used to fish a #14 adams this way in 80s, in Colorado along the dredge pools for native brookies... worked great
Awesome setup, i use this with a fly and water bobber for early morning and late evening bass and they always hit!!!

Thanks you guys, going to try that method

I find the Wooly Booger in the zebra Midge tend to work the best for trout where I live on Whidbey Island
It's okay Marlin, we still wuv you! :)

My heart . He tried so hard to get a fish 😩, we all been there !!
The first part of the strike with this setup is the bobber the hook 2nd so sometimes with trout there not striking very hard so can be frustrating...
Any tips on catching first trout
I was taught pull don't jerk on fly hook set .
So true
What's the length of leasder between swivel and fly thanks
24-36” usually.

Hey use clear bobbers the you can put water in
They have colored ones as well. I like the green for visibility, lake or stream.
I fish a lot of super clear water, think this will work there?
Absolutely
What size float are you using with this set up? I’m not a Flyfisherwoman but I’d like to try this.
This looks like the medium size red bobber, but any bobber will work for this. Smaller the better, as long as you can get the cast where you want.
thank you very much I appreciate it.
Videos like this are much closer to how real life is
Can you tell me? If you are fishing in a "fly fishing only" waterway, is the fly and bubble technique legal?
Woolly Worm
So do you use dry flies
Is your hook sharp?
What editing soft ware do y o u use?
