This is the best comment ever, and I hate how all these influencers keep pushing them and don’t help us find some good single payment apps here and there… Nowadays the first thing I see is the payment mode, but it’s sad that the options are getting fewer and fewer…
@@nekbeth No. It‘s purely a rip off. Why do you think this commercial model became so popular (for developers)? Simple. It provides a revenue stream no matter what and over time, users pay way more for the app than they would otherwise be willing to and often times what‘s reasonable. Especially with apps where users add more and more content, the lock in effect increases over time. You need to continue paying to use the content you created and even worse. If you decide to switch to another app because the app develops in a direction you don‘t like or because something better comes out, you either continue to pay for the app or you lose access to your content. With the traditional approach, developers must continue to develop their apps to get people to buy upgrades. With subscriptions, the motivation to do so is much lower. People don‘t have to be convinced to shell out additional money for cool new features, they are locked in. There are a few exceptions where I find subscriptions acceptable, for example if the app requires a server backend which needs to be operated and maintained by the developer. It‘s perfectly fine to charge for providing this service. Same is true for apps providing content, e.g. newspapers, music streaming services etc. I find it really annoying that we ended up in this subscription hell. It seems most people just didn‘t get it. They were not willing to pay reasonable prices for apps so the subscription model was invented. With a subscription they pay way more over time and they get all the negative side effects mentioned above (Most people were not and are still not willing to pay 24$ or maybe even more for an iPad app but many seem to be happy to shell out 1.99$ a month for the subscription fee which is on the low side if you look at usual subscription prices). This is actually not smart but somehow it seems to work.
