This band is from my hometown, Spartanburg, SC. In high school my girlfriend and I rode my 125 cc dirt bike 60 back road miles to see their concert in Clemson, SC. The singer of this song Toy Caldwell isn't the lead singer of the band. The guy playing the Tambourine, Doug Gray is. You should check out other songs that he sings. He has an amazing voice. The Live version of Rambling, with Charlie Daniels on fiddle, will send chills down your spine. Toy's rough voice came from years of smoking cigarettes. Unfortunately he died of throat cancer. Toy was taught to play guitar by his grandfather who was a banjo player, not a guitar player. Thus Toy picks with his thumb like a banjo player. He was on the cover of ""Guitar Player"magazine as the best thumb picker. He was a Purple Heart decorated Vietnam Marine.
I partied with these guys at the Indianapolis Holiday Inn after their Easter concert in 1975 where they opened for Foghat. Foghat was staying in the same hotel and I got to meet them too. The Marshall Tucker Band definitely partied harder.
Quickly becoming my favorite channel. Both of you are great. My favorite of theirs is Heard it in a love song and a close second is Fire on the mountain
Hey you two. Love your reactions. So, the band was formed by Toy Caldwell who was the lead guitarist and also steel guitar player, and wrote a number of their big songs. He served as a marine in Viet Nam and was wounded and sent home and discharged due to his injury. He started a band and that band became Marshall Tucker Band. Toy and several (if not most) of the guys were from South Carolina. They had rented an old warehouse as a rehearsal hall and one night while thinking about names for the band, they noticed a key that had been left behind. I t was engraved with the name Marshall Tucker. They had no idea it was actually somebody's name. Turns out he was a blind piano tuner who had tuned a piano that was in the space the guys rented. They kept the name. They had a lot of great songs. Mostly a blend of rock and country and blues and jazz. Much of the music of the 70s (especially southern rock) had a strong blues vibe. Enjoy the ride.
Toy was awarded the Purple Heart and after recoperation he requested to rejoined his buddies in Viet Nam. He was a winner not a quitter and it showed....
Sweet Potato. "The woman that I'm lovin, folks, Has a shape like a frog. But that ain't so bad. She smells like a hog. But I love her. Boy, I love her just the same. She is my little old sweet potato, And I just love that little ugly thang". (Elvin Bishop Group, 1969).

If you are looking for more flute in your music. Try Jethro Tull "Songs from the Wood"
👍👍Yes!!!
Great choice... Any Tull will do.
Absolutely! Locomotive breathe, Aqualung, cross eyed Mary. But you have to do a live video to see the craziest flute player! ✌❤
@@donnagonatas3155 Yes aqualung!!! 👍👍 Awesome.
"Locomotive Breath" the live version, been suggesting that one since he reacted to Charlie Daniels
My first concert was The Cars, Thin Lizzy, Journey & The Marshall Tucker Band who were the headliners and they tore it up!
Got to love southern rock ! Marshall Tucker, Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet etc. Love !
The south totally blows 😂
@@pastorofmuppets22 While you totally suck.
@@greytoothe Yeah kind of strange how so many are moving to southeast from other places like Cali if it is so bad.
D
The Marshall Tucker Band - Heard It in a Love Song
yep... 👍
Add me to that list
"He looks so young"
He was a veteran of the Vietnam war. USMC, I believe. Great song!
Toy was awarded the Purple Heart and after recoperation he requested to rejoined his buddies in Viet Nam. He was a winner not a quitter and it showed....
@@coonshine1 He was a true warrior
THAT WAS REAL CRISP FOR A LIVE VERSION....WELCOME TO SOUTHERN ROCK!!
Marshall Tucker Band is awesome.....they do another great one......Heard It In A Love Song.
for some vocals, Elvin Bishop, "Fooled Around and Fell in Love"
Sweet Potato.
"The woman that I'm lovin, folks,
Has a shape like a frog.
But that ain't so bad.
She smells like a hog.
But I love her.
Boy, I love her just the same.
She is my little old sweet potato,
And I just love that little ugly thang".
(Elvin Bishop Group, 1969).
Oh, Lord yes!! Beautiful vocals on a fantastic song..
I like Elvin Bishop’s “Travelin’ Shoes”
Mickey Thomas sings lead in Fooled Around and Fell In Love

My son, hubby & a friend play this song when we jam. I play the flute & bass on it. It's a fun song!!
the flute player does it for me. simply amazing
When he says lawd its coming from a deep place
This is one of the most awesome songs I’ve ever heard. It never gets old, it’s a timeless tune. You Caldwell was a great great musician and songwriter. He is simply amazing. You guys are playing one of my Time faves, love this man and his timeless music, so talented. Somebody sure knew what they were doing when they suggested this to play . Phenhas an amazing voice. He was young when this came out ( early 70’s )
Toy had so much soul and passion. Rest easy Toy, you are missed loved and so adored and your music will live on forever. R.I.P. Toy

"fire on the mountain" "heard it in a love song" two more greats by marshall Tucker.
Toy Caldwell a Marine along with 3 other members of the band, received Purple Heart after being wounded in Vietnam. I saw them before the made it at Top Sail beach,NC. Great live band.
You gotta listen to Tracy Chapman's "Give me one Reason". She puts her soul into her music!!
this is the last song i ever played live..i retired from playing drums due to medical reasons..such great memories
Welcome to Southern Rock.
These Southern boys can tear it up. Another song MY JESUS TOLD ME SO is incredible! Y'all do such another great job!
Back to the 1970s, with some good old "Southern Rock/Blues. This is a heck of a song.
This is quintessential, southern rock. Along the same lines as Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers.
Southern rock is so based in blues. My two favorite music genres.
Great reaction, guys! Love Marshall Tucker. Another recommendation for a soulful song is "The Band - The Weight - with the Staples at the Last Waltz" Take care!
Our generation had the best music hands down......70's
The 70’s were awesome. Gave us TOY CALDWELL ❤
