Teams were still trying to recruit Wilt out of retirement at age _FIFTY!_ By that time, he had become a volleyball star and was later inducted into the _volleyball hall of fame._
easily.... esp defensively and on boards.... whose going to stop him inside?.... watch the clips against a young kareem. wilt was a cripple then (after major knee surgery back when that was like civil war surgery), yet cranked it up against a supreme young talent. kareem couldnt stop him. who would stop a 67 wilt if he had to put up 30 pts. seriously, who ever? his feet were too quick & his power, even now, was unrivaled. in his prime he put up monster numbers against the D freak russell.... I just laugh when I hear people go on and on about mj and lebron & just discount wilt.
That's the thing that really stunned me: that WHILE putting up all those other record numbers, he played complete games, AND never fouled out of a single one.
Why do people think never fouling out was a good thing? Wilt admitted that he actively chased that record and thus would completely stop trying on defense by the time he got to 4 or 5 fouls. Tons of players could put up insane stats if they were completely willing to forgo all team success to do so
@@alexloeher8628 thats incorrect. When he started getting up there inbfouls he would try to only focus on blocks. If they recorded blocks dude wouldve averaged a triple double for a whole career. He would also start shooting the fadeaway in thos situations so he wouldnt get an offensive foul. And still putting up godly numbers. Your misrepresenting the truth. Dont do that.
@lancethedragonmaster8562 if Wilt wasn't trying to pick up fouls, how would he get blocks, dumbass? Contesting shots is just about the fastest way to pick up fouls. There's also 0 evidence he would have averaged even close to 10 blocks and you're delusional if you think otherwise. The closest stat count we have is one guy's subjective interpretation of footage that stated he had 8 blocks over the course of a hundred games or so. You're clearly the gullible type that also thought Wilt slept with 20000 women I bet. You're not even misinterpreting the truth, just parroting straight lies because you want to gobble Wilt's meat more than is already common
What about his abilities like benching 600 lbs , running 4.5 and having a vertical leap of 4”8 or something. That’s different while been 7”1 300 something pounds. He averaged 30 23 for a career and he was shooting on the perimeter. Like kd no he wasn’t hitting 3s but he mughta been the first to do the fade-away And those centers was 6”10 and up he also went against a 7”3 center??? I just feel like and did you see those stats that they were putting up they’re we’re good players in the 60s. I’m sorry but wilt is and may have always been the best ever. Not the goat that’s lebron because he played in his prime longer than everyone. That’s what being the greatest mean
@@jerryworld3656 for real though. it was already headed that way by the late 90s. scores like 124 to 122 and stuff. players like james harden scoring 50 but playin no defense. theres something to be said about putting up a bunch of points and playing defense the whole game. like mj and pippen. and also kobe and lebron.
the best part about this video is that despite the argument that he didn't have the most difficult competition, he is giving the work to Bill Russell and young Kareem throughout the whole thing lol
@ScepticalCynic agree.. I liked the vid, but this guy discounted wilts era too much. It was a power forward & center focused league then. The big men were very schooled then technique wise.... guard wise and small forward, todays league would blow them out. I dont deny that.... but anyone who knows hoops, knows the inside game is a totally different animal. & at that time the style of play centered around it. wilt played in a much less diluted league w/ half the league filled w/ very talented big men, night in and night out he was facing. guys who really knew how to board and play phyical D. None could stop wilt, at best w/ russell and thurmand, only contain him to a degree... wilt would eat todays league up literally.
@@kelvinkloud Agreed. I have to laugh at all the people who say that Wilt was no good because he played against a bunch of 6'8'' guys and then turn around and say that today's game is so much better because of small ball and stretch fives.
Watching him stuff Kareem and then SWAT his sky hook "the most unblockable shot in NBA history" in his late 30s on bad knees leaves me in awe every time I see the clip. Also I never got the fewer teams argument, ok so there is less players which means more competition for a spot on the roster and better quality of talent. Also they still played 82 games which resulted in Wilt going up against Bill Russell 11 times a year just in the regular season and that's not even taking the other great big men from his era into account.
Yup, Wilt is, no doubt, far more superior than todays center I've watched a video about Karl-Anthony Towns doing post up and it was a joke For real, how could you do a power dribble but instead of getting closer to the paint, you get further away? And he's one of the best big man in todays league Wilt will literally eat every last of todays big man
@ScepticalCynic I'm sick of hearing that BS. Biggest bunch a crap out there. Thanks for facts & clarification. Wilt (and Russell) had excellent competition. It's just that some don't wanna give em credit.
Anyone who ever saw him play in person, as I was fortunate to do, understands the fact that nobody has ever come close to him in physical prowess. And nobody ever dominated both ends of the court like he did. Not even close.
try explaining that to anyone under 50.... what is sad, is for whatever cultural or sociological reason, even w/ all the vids at hand, younger people are really blind in re to wilt... imo, its their lack of attention span and snarky lack of respect. to give wilt his due, you have to get into the stats and do some analytical work re his era... wilt would dominate maybe moreso now b/c big men now arent as schooled in the inside game. but in fairness he would also get less touches b/c the game is centered more around guards and small forwards. stats wise his numbers would be less w/ points. boards would be the same. wilts motor pre bad knees was high intensity. block shots also same..... in todays era, no doubt, goat again.
I'm not sure if you are aware Mr Buckfan, but this is exactly what this series literally attempts to debunk our preconceived notions thus open eyes and minds to the contrary. I don't consider Wilt the GOAT but it is compelling, that's the whole purpose of this.
kelvinkloud My grandfather has seen Wilt Bill Kareem Magic Bird Jordan Lebron all of the greats and everytime I ask him the question on who is the greatest it’s wilt chamberlain he says I have seen Jordan and Lebron but they were never as dominant by themselves as wilt was by himself.
heres a stat that should come to the forefront when talking about wilt: blocked shots.... problem was the league didnt officially count them. Yet, most people dont know, philly did. when w/ philly, wilt avg 8.8 blocks per game. Think about that for a sec., that means he had many games w/ over 10 blocks. in turn, his triple double numbers would rival magic, lebron etc. Furthermore, he wouldve literally had about 20-30 quad doubles considering he led the league in assists also. he also had quick hands, so I'm sure he had some games w/ over 10 steals. So its not far fetched that he may have had 1-5 games where he literally pulled a quin double... people who dont give wilt his due as goat or at the very least top 3 ever, are just snarky, intellectually lazy people, locked into color videos.
If I'm correct, this number of 8.8 blocks per game only cover a 110 game period over 71-72, when he was 36-37 years old... His infamous record is 26 blocks against the Pistons, can you imagine... I can figure he was around (or above) 10 blocks per game for the most part of his career ! Absolute Goat.
Hey Nick ! The stat line is from 68 and is allegedly 53pts, 32rbds, 14 assists, 24blks & 11 steals ! That would be the greatest stat line ever... But just by counting blocks, he would have more triple double than anybody and probably a few dozens of quadruple double
Bulls eye..... 20-30+quads.... 1-5 at least quins.... he also played 50% of his games against HOF centers, including the great unseld (RIP).... for indiv player feats, talent and dominance, it’s wilt at the apex of the mountain with a goat mask on and then step down to the stair level and you can battle it out between MJ, lebron, magic, Russell, Kareem or the big O.... But stop with the bs that wilt is looking up to that level. That’s a joke. Russ himself has said as much.
So true, that Goat pyramid starts with Wilt standing on top, Mike aiming at him and 6-7 others battling below in no order (Kareem, Lbj, Bird, Magic, Russell, Duncan and Robertson in my opinion). Funny that people hang on to the "stats don't tell who the goat is" but then use 'em to prove their opinions also forgetting ALL the stats that weren't counted for Wilt and Russell and that would put them ahead in the conversation. How could you argue against a Quintuple Double or 20-30+ Quadruple ?
Wilt said it best himself in an interview. "My team was the only team to beat the Russell Celtics in a Finals series. If I'm a loser, what's that make everyone else?" (might be a slight misquote, I can't find the interview video I saw him say that in)

The loser/choker label attributed to Chamberlain is pure nonsense. Here is a man who made every team he played for into a title contender, led them all to franchise win records of which 2 still stand today, led 4 squads to the best record in the league, reached the conference finals 12 times, the finals 6 times, and won 2 championships in different conferences as the anchorman for 2 of the greatest teams of all time while playing completely different roles in each of them, has a winning record in postseason games facing elimination, and put in more playing time than any human being ever. The mere fact he averaged 47.2 minutes for his postseason career is proof alone he is both the greatest athlete and most valuable player in history.
i got into a discussion yesterday about wilt vs Kareem Abdul jabbar. this person seems to feel very strongly that Jabaar is head and shoulders above wilt. he said wilts problem is that he didnt make his teams better. i dont know about that. there seems to be a lot of hate for this guy because by himself he was so dominant? dont know
that is utter bullshit. chamberlain could not have done the things russell did, even in his dreams. russell won 11 nba championships in 13 years. one of the ones he did not win, was when he got hurt, and could not play. THERE IS A REASON. and that stupid argument about chamberlain not having as good of players. no one talks about how russell's game made all his players better. and no one talks about the 67 76ers, when chamberlain had luke jackson, billy cunningham, hal greer, and chet walker. they actually beat russell that year. next year, russ got the best of them. but their team was better. it was probably the strongest team from the entire 60s. they just did not have russell, the most dominant player ever. and no, dominance is not how big you are. it is how much you control the game. when wilt played, all the rest of his team was worse. cuz once wilt got the ball, he was gonna shoot. the rest of his teammates could have just sat on the ground, for all the good they were gonna do !! the celtic fast break was an extremely well known fact at that time. it could just as well have been called the russell fast break. because he had everything to do with it. as soon as his foot hit the ground, he had an outlet pass towards the half-court line. when he blocked a shot, it would invariably end up in his hands or one of his teammates. he intimidated the entire team's shooting from inside, cuz russ could block balls that no one else could get to. there are so many things that russ did that are not on any statistic, except for one - WINNING THE GAME. the celts werent good before russell. they did poorly after russell left. during his 13 years, they were a dynasty. compare that to michael jordan. the first year after his retirement, the bulls played a very tough semi-final series against the eventual winner. in other words, jordan had damn good teammates.
@@jimmybrice6360 Russell’s own comments about Wilt lend the lie to your commentary! No need to get emotional about it. The facts are that Red Auerbach tried to recruit Chamberlain to play for an east coast college because that would’ve allowed him to draft Wilt on a regional basis. Chamberlain turned him down and went to Kansas. Auerbach never forgave Wilt for it and held a grudge against him for the rest of his career. Both athletes were phenoms but Wilt was the taller, stronger more physically gifted of the two. Russell was lucky enough to have a superior coach and system to play under! If you look at the comparison between them when they played against each other Wilt dominated over Russell. The real difference was their respective supporting casts!
@@PR-BEACHBOY again, utter bullshit !! you simply do not understand the game of basketball, like i do. dont feel badly. neither do most basketball fans. first you quote me stats about wilt and russ. that tells me that you dont really understand the game. first of all, russ was never competing against wilt or anyone else for stats. and like i said in my first post, russ had only 1 stat he was interested in - winning the game, and 11 nba championships along with it. read that again - 11 NBA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 13 YEARS. if that doesnt sink in, nothing will !! as i already pointed out in my first post, utter bullshit about respective supporting casts. before russ, the celts werent good. after russ, the celts werent good. with russ, 11 out of 13. during those 13 seasons there was cousy and sharman, followed by the jones boys at guard. players came, players went. russ was always there. the 76ers had the best team of the entire 60s, did manage to win in 67, but lost in 68 to the celts. russell made his players better, because of what he did. that is not in the stats that you like to present. russell intimidated the opposing shooters. that is not in the stats that you present. except in the one that counts - wins and losses. because of the tremendous defense on the inside, the other celts could afford to guard their opponents more closely on the outside, and not worry as much about their opponents getting by them. not in the stats. when russ got the rebound, his outlet pass to half court WAS THE CELTIC FAST BREAK. not in the stats. when he blocked a shot, it would usually end up in his hand or a teammate, not out of bounce. not in the stats. need i go on ? you are talking to someone who really understands the game, probably a lot better than many of the players. i got to see cousy play some in his later years, but most of my memories of the early celts were russ, heinsohn, sanders, sam and kc as the 5 starters. most people probably think that the term 6th man came from john havlicek. the original 6th man was frank ramsey. and he was darn good. satch sanders and kc jones were good defensive players, but not much on offense. they were not superstar players or even close. sam jones was a superstar. and i think heinsohn was, as well. if you would have put chamberlain on the celts instead of russ, the celtics would not have won. it just so happened that the things that russ could do were more important to winning a game than the things that wilt could do. when wilt got the ball, the rest of his team had little to do. wilt was either gonna make it or miss it. russ improved every one of his players - it is really that simple. if we were picking out teams, i want the first pick. i get russ. you can have the next five. i will take the last 4. and beat you every single time. cuz i have someone who is not replaceable. every other player in nba history has someone just as good as him. you have no one to take the place of russ, who could do the most important things BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE. i would say the team with the most amount of talent on it were the 1970s new york knicks. they had 10 or so highly talented players on that team. and when earl the pearl joined clyde in the backcourt - most talented backcourt that i know about. and they were able to play together without egos being involved. and if russ had commanded the 1967 76ers instead of wilt, they probably would have gone undefeated. as far as being athletic, chamberlain was big and strong. but he was sorta clumsy. certainly nowhere near the agility of russ. russ was like a cat on the court. chamberlain more like a bull. are you old enough to have seen these guys actually play ? cuz most people that talk about them, havent even seen them play. this was at the time that i followed sports. i couldnt care less about sports today, and havent for a long time. but you wont see me making comparisons about 2 players that i have not seen play. russell was an unbelievable winner. i cant think of any athlete in any sport with that indomitable urge to win. and the talent to make it so !! in 1969, wilt was traded to the lakers, to join elgin and jerry. no one gave the aging celts a chance. no one BUT ME. that is because i understood that bill russell had an ability to win, like no one since. and while he was probably not young enough to do it during the entire 82-game season, you put him in a championship series, and you have a different sort of animal to contend with. i speak thru the experience of having seen these guys. i dont even value someone else's opinion if they havent done the same. cuz they dont know - just that damn simple.

@@PR-BEACHBOY the reason you dont want to repeat your nonsense about teams and coaches is because i gave you a ton of reasons why this is not correct. yes, you are talking to someone who knows what he is talking about - and you cant come up with factual reasons to debate it. you want to call that arrogant - go ahead. i call it being tired of listening to stupidity about all sorts of topics. you now realize that your definition of greatest has been seriously challenged. what you have yet to understand is that best in a sport is SYNONYMOUS with winning. there are many players in sports who are underrated by fans, because fans do not understand the importance of their input. and there are many players in sports who are overrated by fans for the very same reason. fans like splash. and they tend to equate that with greatness. in basketball, a simple layup does the same thing as 3 somersaults, 5 spins and dunking the basketball. it would be great evidence if you want to talk about athleticism, but not about basketball playing. this is what i have been attempting to tell you. russ won because of what he was able to do. much of it (stuff i have already mentioned) goes completely unnoticed by most fans. when wilt blocked a ball, he smashed it as hard as he could OUT OF BOUNCE. but boy was that smash impressive. when russ blocked the ball, he just tipped it to himself or his teammates, and the action went unnoticed by many. yet russell's actions were both more difficult and a helluva lot better for his team to win the game. i do agree with you on one thing - Nuff said!
It's important to note that during his legendary 1961-1962 season, Wilt was coached by the man who led North Carolina to a triple overtime victory over Chamberlain's Kansas squad. Frank McGuire was a great college coach and he understood that the only way for the Warriors to succeed was to have Chamberlain be the most dominant athlete since Babe Ruth. Wilt respected McGuire and McGuire's encouragement provided Chamberlain with the impetus to almost will his team to the NBA Finals. In the East Finals, the Warriors were expected to get blown off the court by a loaded Celtics squad, but due in large part to Chamberlain's clutch play, the series wasn't decided until Sam Jones hit a last second jump shot in Game 7 at the Boston Garden. After averaging 35.5 points a game against Russell in the first 6 games of the series, McGuire asked Wilt to concentrate on defense in Game 7. In just one of many examples of why the selfish label attributed to Chamberlain was a flat-out myth, Wilt adhered to his coaches wishes by blocking 14 shots in Game 7. Wilt should have been credited with a 15th blocked shot with a few minutes left in the game, but he was called for goaltending and the Celtics led 107-102. Chamberlain proceeded to score the next 5 points and the game was tied at 107, but Jones' jump shot won the game in the final seconds.
@@kajockkijekmplei1555 I agree. Most basketball writers and fans are lazy for they haven't done their research in regards to how frequently Russell got his butt kicked by Chamberlain. For example, Chamberlain outscored and outrebounded Russell in all 8 of their head to head playoff series. This included Wilt posting the only 30-30 (e.g., 30 points/30 rebounds) in NBA playoff history. This occurred during the 1965 East Finals where over the course of a great 7 game series, Chamberlain averaged 30.1 points and 31.4 rebounds against the great Bill Russell.
@@BasketballHighway19 The only way for Wilt's critics to get around documented FACT is to focus on campfire stories and opinion-based narratives. This is classic weak sauce, but when the FACTS are not your side, you have to rely on circular logic to protect your sacred (e.g., Jordan, James, Russell, Abdul-Jabbar) cows. Unfortunately, this thought process has occasionally reached absurd levels. For example, SLAM magazine listed Chamberlain as the 8th greatest player in NBA history, behind the likes of Bryant, O'Neal, Bird, and Johnson. This rag gave a hand wave to Wilt's statistical AND team dominance (e.g., 1967 Sixers, 1972 Lakers 2 of the Top 5 teams in NBA history) and focused on well worn labels that should NEVER be a part of critical analysis. If one deals in reality, the FACTS demonstrate that Chamberlain was the greatest scorer and rebounder in NBA history. In terms of 7 foot centers, he was the greatest passer (e.g., most career assists by a center, only center to lead the league in assists) and defender/shot blocker in NBA history. At minimum, this is the resume of a Top 3 player in NBA history.

I am really glad someone finally sees the difference between if you plucked prime wilt and put him in now from if you put a 13 year old wilt into the modern era and let him grow and then enter the NBA. I think if you put prime wilt into today's NBA he would at most be like 2019 Giannis which is pretty good, however that's at most. But if he grew up now he would have better skills, training and nutrition so could be something we have never seen. Though we will never know. Thanks for the great video.
Funny enough, wilt was apparently able to shoot half court shots and was quite skilled in the post. Having grown up in an era that put bigs in the paint, Wilt primarily played there. My grandpa is in his late 80s and he thinks wilt is the greatest athlete to ever exist. He's one of those people that are born once every couple hundred years that are genetically superior to all other athletes.
He isn't close to the level of the best decathletes in any event. The event he is built for in track is the heigh jump, and he was way behind the best in the country even there.
@@MrErico12345678 At the time he would be a great contender for the decathlon. He was super strong, super fast, etc. The 100m world record at that time was in the low 10 second range and that was for people just focusing on the 100m. He also threw a 56 foot shotput and could triple jump over 50 feet. If he focused on the decathlon instead of basketball he would definitely get some records
My only concern would be if Wilt could have mastered the pole vault. As is, the free throw was Wilt's kryptonite and really the only sensible counter-argument to him being the GOAT.
I mean seriously. Not only does he hold all those records, but he holds multiple of the top 10 spots on pretty much all of them. Average PTs ins a season- spots 1-4 are his, Average RBs in a season- occupies spots 1-3 and shares 9 of the top 18 spots with Bill Russel. I mean the list goes on and on. There shouldn't even be a question as to who the goat is at this point. The difference between Wilt and everyone else is just STAGGERING.
Larva S You are an idiot for thinking Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Oscar Robertson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Nate Thurmond, Rick Berry, Pete Maravich, Willis Reed, Bob Petit all had summer jobs. Only the benchwarmers had jobs which was like 5% of the league. What a moron.
@@LarvaS-hj1eq Russell, Oscar and every all star were playing 40+ Minutes a game. If they did it was only for about 5 minutes. And there were only the ones that were benchwarmers. But you think Benchwarmers playing 5 minutes a game makes players back then retarded compared to today. And great way to paint those players like that. I wonder whj Kareem responds to people saying MJ is the GOAT by saying they have not seen Oscar Robertson or Jerry West Play. I wonder why he responds like that. Now go ahead and tear down people to lift another.
Larva S You are great at tearing other individuals’ accomplishments down. So if any athlete or musician has a part time then they are just losers and don’t deserve any credit for the work they do. Averaging 48 minutes a game against Walt Bellamy, Bill Russell, Nate Thurmond is not great because a few benchwarmers worked summer jobs. Even the average height was 6’5 without shoes. Same as today.
This is a great video series. Very well done. It shows a level of research, documentation, knowledge of the history of the game and an ability to communicate and explain that is uncommon. Thank you very much
"If he lived in another time, they would've built temples to him." That is an amazing sentence and I cannot say you're wrong. I just love it. I vote we, as a community, found the pagan Cult of Chamberlain, and perform hecatomb in worship of the demigod of Athleticism and Virility
I'm lucky enough to have seen the Lakers with Wilt, Jerry West & Elgin Baylor more then a few times and never missed a game either on radio or TV back then. What a great team
I got to see him play against the Chicago Bulls back in the early 70's, in Chicago, with our HS "Letterman's Club". That was quite the show, ... even though we were high up in the stands, and a "smoke filled" arena in the upper levels. If I were to put together, an NBA team with guys at the top of their game/career, Wilt would be my number one pick, ... no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
Another great piece! Love how you stated you were going to change the narrative approach. I absolutely agree that you did. A great partner piece to your Tim Duncan analysis ;though it would have been interesting to hear your thoughts when all three greats are considered. Perhaps you will do so in the Russell video.
This channel is uploading a television quality series in “making the case” and is doing amazing analyzing the game, good luck with the channel and I wish you a bright future in editing or sports!
Only thing I'd disagree with was wilt being the 1st superstar. Imo that honor belongs to George Mikan. Just discovered this channel today and I'm LOVIN it bro! 👍🏿
Wilt led the league in assists _because he wanted to,_ and he is the only center to ever do it. He is also the only player ever to lead the league in assists and rebounds in the same season.
Imagine thinking someone did something because they "wanted to" and it not be stat padding. We're celebrating someone for going out of his way to boost his own stats instead of play to win. It's well documented that Wilt would hold the ball until he saw a player that was likely to record him an assist before he passed it. Players that were likely to dribble it first (and thus not register an assist for wilt) were avoided. Shame that that tactic convinced so many gullible people this many years down the line
THink about that statement. And watch his gameplay. His skills aren't adequate enough to say that. He's just so much bigger than everyone that he was playing. Jordan played in an era where bigs dominated the NBA and still outshined. Where as wilt played in an era with really no bigs and a lot of non athletic short guys. Even his 100 pt game is skewed. His teammates were fouling the other team to get him extra possessions the whole time. He is a top 5 or 10 great but the goat is MJ and MJ only.
@@davidelsea1296 Another example of young people with no knowledge about the game. When Wilt played the players were the same height with 2 or three centers taller than him. Believe what you want knowledge is not for everyone.
i always though if wilt had larry bird in his time they will be the greatest tandem of all time. or in the other way, if larry bird had wilt in bird's 80's era they will be the greatest duo of all time. i liked them both.
Amazing video ! Thanks for the hard work and wonderful storytelling ! I've been going through so much incredible stories about Chamberlain and there is this one about him playing against pro-basketball players at age 16-17 under a fake name and averaging 40-50ppg. Thank you for pointing out the major aspect of what makes the Russell/Chamberlain winning comparison obsolete for me. Every time he had a good team and a great coach, he won. I wondered what would have happened if the 76ers didn't blew they're 3-1 lead against the Celtics in the 68 Conference finals... Would Hannum and Wilt have stayed and continue on winning championships after stopping consecutively the Celtics instead of 67 being a "fluke" for Boston ? ...
I think a lot of people don’t understand just how great Wilt was. Im 21 so I’ve never got to witness him play but I know he’s the goat. It’s no debate that Magic Johnson is one of the greatest players to ever play but the story of a 50 year old Chamberlain playing against Magic and not only holding his own but denying every shot that came in the paint is ridiculous. I promise you Wilt would absolutely destroy todays competition
You're 21 so no you don't know.. he only won 2 rings when the league was weak with less than 10 teams, Jordan would have won 8 straight if he didn't go try baseball plus 3 times the teams in the league plus much better players, Jordan 6-0 in the finals never needed a game 7 Wilt is overrated. And you can't "promise" Wilt would dominate today lol cause he wouldn't
@@grant1739 bruh shut up, you’re argument is flawed asf. If we gon talk numbers, lets talk numbers. If there is only 10 teams that means only the best players can play. Meaning out of everybody in the nation, he would only go up against the best and wont be playing just scrubs (e.g. you won’t have mfs like Denzel Valentine in your team). You act like these legends don’t patent their games after other legends. Who do you think MJ learnt the fade-away from? You realize Wilt was one of the first people to use the fadeaway and have a high efficiency right? And as far as championships go, we all know Bill Russell dominated that era, not because he was talented asf but because of the most OP squad of hofs on that Celtics side. Wilt was doing shit big men had no business doing and this was before modern technology. I have no doubt Wilt would dominate today’s game and for MJ winning 8 championships? Imma need you to see his record against that Rockets side with Hakeem and lemme see how you feel about facing them in that 94 or 95 finals. MJ himself was relieved that the Rockets couldn’t make it out the west because they had no answer for Hakeem and thats facts. Trust me, Im a die hard bulls fan but i aint gon lie Craig.
When i talk about Wilt i always say "he is the most naturally equipped and gifted athlete for the game of basketball, who played the game of basketball" and i do believe he could have played into the 90s.
Because there were so few teams in the league then, there was no talent dilution, no weak opponent to pad your stats against. It was HOF centre vs HOF centre every night, Wilt gave all of them the business. Every single one of them.
Idk man I have russell only because when bill russell retired the celtics had a losing record and the season before he retired they won the finals and the season before russell's dokie season they only won 10 more games than they lost and in russell's rookie season they won the finals and when wilt left the sixers only a couple years later they made the finals again if I was building a team I pick russell over wilt but in terms who is better chamberlain but the greater player is russell
Loving this. Even as a kid of the "80's and being a MJ fanboy, seeing this older footage and your narrative makes me smile. Most of all because the times were different.
Your videos are excellent. You only left out that Wilt had crazy endurance at 48.5 minutes a game in a run and gun era, his extra long 7'8" arm span, and the fact that he almost boxed Muhammad Ali which probably would have resulted in Ali winning on points, but never knocking down or out Wilt.
Not so sure they'd have built statues and temples to Wilt. I mean, what ancient athletes/warriors have temples dedicated to them? A statue, sure, but there's a statue of Wilt today, outside the Wells Fargo Center in Philly. Great video, though, really enjoying your take on this.
he was a generational player. he transformed the game for the big man offense. He is the G.O.A.T..... his average points per game when they played a different style of game back then. he was a beast
I keep waiting for your channel to blow up in subscriptions. Every video is excellent and I always think that this is the one that will get your channel thousands of subscribers. Keep doing your great job and it will happen.
Great stuff, that earned you a subscribe. I'm a Philly native, and my father, grandfathers, uncles, etc. all spoke about Wilt as a near-mythic figure. I always thought it was exaggerated until I started doing some research and watching footage, listening to his peers/coaches, etc. He definitely belongs in the conversation - and you laid out an eloquent and cogent case.
The GOAT is simply based on the metrics the person wish's to use... I prefer to use the "what changes did this player make in the NBA". Wilt has more rule changes to stop him than anyone else in history, affected the game more than anyone has before or since. I'm not suggesting that by putting Wilt on the Celtics they would be as good or win as much as I believe it took someone like Russell to keep the team balanced, but they did have NINE HOF's on those teams, and I would say that the teams Wilt were on, you take him off, they do not even make the playoffs. As for the era Wilt played in, take a look back at the centers he faced on a nightly bases, most of them are in the HOF now, so the competition was great, not the bull shit everyone wants you to believe. Wilt STILL owns more NBA records than anyone that ever played, even after being retired for over 50 years. Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT and it's not even close. Everyone else is just arguing for second place.
good point. the league was much less diluted. also in his era, the game was centered around power forwards and centers in re to getting the ball. they were very schooled technique wise. guards and small forwards then would get blown away in most cases compared to now, b/c the game is focused on that position as far as getting the ball. plus throw in conditioning and athleticism. however, in wilts era, the big player was were the game was focused. wilt dominated in that envir. He would destroy now also. he had freak athletic skills even now, along w/ being schooled in how to operate inside the paint. throw in his boards & D and hes a monster no one would have an answer for. dwight howard w/ much more quickness, skills and drive.
Right now.... wilt would be a 40 pt 15 rebound and 10 assistant center that could outrun everyone on the court that would play the entire game. Wilt to me is the greatest big man of all time and possibly the greatest ever. He would dominate in the 80s 90s 2000s 2010s and now the 2020s.
15:00 Alex Hannum WAS that coach - for a while. He was the ONLY common factor in the 2 Championships Bill Russell didn't win out of his 13 years in the league - both times as head coach for the opposing team. To be fair though, he wasn't overall up to Red's level.
Fantastic video....thanks for making the case for Wilt. Wilt had bad luck with coaches and free-throws and that's about it. It's a team sport and the coach is really important. For example, MJ never won anything without Pippen and Phil Jackson.
Well done. Wilt played semi-pro in high school. Those days, walk into a gym and play whoever was present. Wilt made everyone look like a little kid. Russell was Auerbach's second pick. Wilt worked with Auerbach in high school, at Kutschers, during the summers. Auerbach for a camp coach? Trumps my Robert Hagler Sr. for one in the back yard;-) or Charlie Johnson...RIP. Wilt is much like Secretariat: People accept Secretariat's records, though one with a bit of work. Both may well have been from different planets. Secretariat had a heart twice normal size. Wilts' physical attributes just required a ruler, and tape. He had arms,30 inches, bigger then my thighs and waist in high school! Russell was also an alien. Second or first in the world in the NCAA in high jump, depending on the week. Quick as a cat, and VERY smart. Russell indeed benefited from Auerbach's teaching, and general manager ship. God bless them both.
Not arguing with that, but the great Larry Brown told a story of when Wilt(aged around 50) and 4 UCLA freshmen played Magic, Worthy, Byron Scott, AC Green, and Bernard King. It was game point, and Magic shot a hook and Wilt blocked it. Magic said it was goaltending even though both Wilt and Brown thought otherwise, but gave the game to the Lakers. Then Wilt said “There will be no more layups in this gym” and proceeded to block every shot close to the rim. That was at age 50!
@@robg8203 there are tons of wilt chamberlain stories. the NBA wanted to sign him at 50. that's how incredible he was. he was the goliath to everyone's david. but his skillset was limited. even though he could shoot 3pt hookshots, even though he was the most dominant and maybe even a more dominant presence than shaq. but his resume is lacking.... Magic won since pre-school essentially.lol his skillset is better and Magic has led giants. People forget..... Kareem joined the lakers in 1975.. he didn't win any rings in 5 years with the lakers until magic got there. People are too quick to judge purely on athleticism and throw everything else aside.the NBA was saved by 2 of the arguably least athletic superstars in NBA history
Excellent job. IMO, there's Wilt, then everyone else. Jordan and Kareem are the next best thing, followed by Kobe, Bird, and Magic with a whole bunch of guys right behind them, like Russell, Baylor, Robertson, West, Barry, Pistol, Dr J, Moses, Hakeem, Barkley, Malone, Robinson, Shaq, Duncan, KG, D-Wade, LeBron, KD, etc. Russell was great, but he was more like the finishing piece on an incredible franchise filled with Hall-of-Famers (Russ never played with fewer than 5 and had teams with as many as 9 HOF players). He never had to carry the load, like the other greats, and was never his team's primary scoring option and rarely even number two. Red was the real architect, and won 2 more titles in the next 7 years post-Russell. Your point about Red is on the mark; as is your point of how well Wilt did when he had a great coach. He may have won only 2 championships, but the 60s Celtics were like the Yankees under Casey Stengel, but more so. A lot of great players had to play second fiddle to those dynasties. And, those 2 Wilt championships were, at the time, the greatest seasons any NBA team had ever had. Most don't realize that the 76ers may have been even better in 68 than 67, but the injury bug hit hard at the end of the season, similar to the 2019 Warriors, or Wilt may have had 3rd Ring. And, don't forget, many of his losses to Boston were decided by a play or two, or he may have had more.
For all around basketball skills, I agree 100% on your top six. That 7th one is a much harder choice. Russell or Hakeem? But when it's all said and done, it's got to be LEBRON.
rtosborne3, look at Russell’s record of 10-0 in Game 7s and I put Bill at 1B with Wilt 1A. 61-62 Bill Russell vs Lakers in Game 7 scores 30 points and grabs 44 rebounds in 53 minutes, played every minute including overtime. Scores 5 points in overtime. Greatest Game 7 performance ever. That’s one reason the MVP Finals is named after Bill Russell. 10-0.
The Celtics had won nothing before Russell arrived and won nothing after he left. When Chamberlain decided that the most important thing was winning, he was the heart of a great team (Philly). Russell decided that the most important thing was winning when he was a sophomore in college. Two NCAA championships, an undefeated season, a 55-game winning streak ... and 11 NBA championships in 13 years. (The year the Celtics lost to the Hawks in the Finals, Russell was injured and missed several games.) The objective of the game is points or rebounds or assists; the objective of the game is winning ... and Russell was the greatest winner ever.
@@williamzame3708 - Actually Boston won the championship in 74 and 76, and went to the Eastern Conference Finals every year between 72 and 76 with Havlicek as their star. They had a couple down years after Russell and Sam Jones both retired in 69, but quickly turned it around when Cowens arrived and Jo Jo White hit his prime. Also, before Russell arrived they were getting really close to a title, then Russell, Heinsohn, Ramsey, Sanders, and KC Jones were the finishing pieces, and Havlicek arrived in 62. During Russell's career, he never played on a team with less than 5 future Hall-of-famers and a couple teams had as many as 9. He also had arguably the greatest coach/GM of all-time, and with no free agency, those teams did not get broken up. The conclusion should be that Auerbach was the greatest winner ever.
Excellent video. Compelling as always. Love that last quote. Beauty of it is, that Wilt and Bill were both unique. Imagine Wilt playing for those Celtics teams?
Damn. This was excellent. I've just discovered your channel, and all of the analyses in your "Making The Case" series are trenchant and powerful. It has been a real treat for me. Thank you.
You should've mentioned his insane endurance. Even in his high tempo era (more possessions per game=more running up and down the court),no one is close to his career minutes played per game. He has the top 7 seasons. In his best single season he played 48.5 mins per game. That's insane. Every minute of every game including OT
Wilt would average 45 pts 25 rebs 10 blks 6assists and 4 steals if he played today, the whole league would have to adjust to him. He was like Shaq, but faster, stronger, taller, smarter and a better shooter. If the stats were taken he would be the blocks and steals leader. His turn around jumper is the prototype nba shot. He had handles so good, he was offered $1m to play for the Globetotters. Bill Russell said "The best defensive game I ever played, Wilt scored 45 points and had 28 rebounds against me, but we won". Bill Russell was the only player that even attempted to guard Wilt one on one, and by doing so, he allowed his much superior teammates the freedom to lock down the rest of Wilt's team. Wilt ran a 4.4 second 40, high jumped 6'6", long jumped 22ft, ran the 440 in 49 seconds, the 880 in 1:53 in high school, IN HIGH SCHOOL! His vertical jump was 48", 2" higher than MJ. He was way more than just a tall guy. If blocks and steals were recorded he's stat lines would have at times read something like 50 30 20 12 12. Nobody ever blocked Kareem's sky hook except Wilt, he blocked it 3 times in one trip down the court when he was 35 years old. Did I mention he played whole seasons without missing a minute of play. He averaged more than 48 min a game twice!
Why this gem of a video doesn't have 1 million views at the very least? speaks volumes on how viewers prefer digested ideas, and not to think by themselves.
maybe because your script and video are being so masterfully put together... now gratitude is exactly what I feel. as a trained historian, I'm inclined to think that it is not clear facts and figures, but rather stories which actually wins people's attention, appreciation, and acceptance. I salute you, the broadener of overall perspective)
Wilt was an absolute physical specimen, Even when compared to todays athletes, Imagine how strong or fast Wilt would've been with todays nutrition and training. Even just growing up in today's era would've meant his nutrition throughout his childhood would be vastly better, He could've grown to be bigger than he was and his natural strength would be even more insane. In terms of a single player on their own, I don't think anyone beats Wilt
Wilt "never had what it took to be a winner?" Ah, hate to break it you, but Chamberlain won 2 NBA Championships, he was the MVP of the 1972 Finals, and if such an award existed at the time, he would have been the MVP of the 1967 Finals. Wilt's 2 championship teams (e.g., 1967 Sixers, 1972 Lakers) were also 2 of the 5 greatest NBA teams of all-time. In terms of individual accomplishments, no NBA player comes close to touching the Big Dipper. He was arguably the greatest scorer and rebounder in NBA history, he was the greatest 7 foot defender in league history, and one of the top 5 passing big men of all-time. Chamberlain is also the only NBA player to ever have a TPA or Total Production Average (e.g., points, rebounds, assists) of 50 or more in both the regular and post season.
I think the last point you made may be the most telling...Chamberlain could of had success with celtics if he played Russell role he proved that in 72 however there is no way Russell would of had success playing Chamberlain role...never, ever, ever!!! (Bytheway just got a new subscriber keep up the good work)
It was actually the worst comment he made on this series. Chamberlain had great teammates, but they had to change their style to fit what he wanted, case in point West and Baylor. And before that the guys on the Warriors who were great players. He never wanted to play without the ball going through him, ever! So I have no idea why people think he could have won as much as Russell. People are so stat driven and are blinded by it. Stats mean shit, if you don't win first!
@Heini Grudziadz he won two titles for a reason. Just because you're a great offensive player, doesn't mean I can drop you in with other great players and your going to win. We seen this in many sports....
@Heini Grudziadz What does that mean? He was a liability on pick and rolls. He rarely helped outside the paint. There are little things that he didn't do, that's not Stat driven, that's why he lost. Nobody is questioning his talent, but this isn't a one on one, there are other things he refused to do...
Even if we'll played in this era instead of the one he did it still be the strongest man on the court and you see less player today that are such phenomenal multi sport athletes.
I've watched 5 so far (MJ, LeBron, TD, Bill Russell & Wilt) and this one might be the strongest in terms of making the case, especially the narative and coaching arguments. Love it👍
that ending got me teared up. Wilt is the most fascinating athlete of all time, and it's a shame he doesn't get the credit he deserves. There will never be another Wilt Chamberlain. can't wait for your video on Bron. Great great job

Wilt was like someone who came down from Mt. Olympus. Never fouled out of a game. The greatest athlete of the modern era.
and he played the 48 minutes through a whole ass season while being a 7’0 that relies on power and physical prowess, absolute demon
The closest stat count we have is one guy's subjective interpretation of footage that stated he had 8 blocks over the course of a hundred games or so.

the best part about this video is that despite the argument that he didn't have the most difficult competition, he is giving the work to Bill Russell and young Kareem throughout the whole thing lol
Yup, Wilt is, no doubt, far more superior than todays center
I've watched a video about Karl-Anthony Towns doing post up and it was a joke
For real, how could you do a power dribble but instead of getting closer to the paint, you get further away?
And he's one of the best big man in todays league
Wilt will literally eat every last of todays big man
@ScepticalCynic I'm sick of hearing that BS.

There’s an unofficial stat line of Wilt recording a quintuple double. I believe it was during the same stretch of games this Milan guy mentioned.
If I'm a loser, what's that make everyone else?"
(might be a slight misquote, I can't find the interview video I saw him say that in)

“Too big to be a man; not big enough to be a horse”
He was so good man. Put 5 MJ's to defend him, he would still dominate.
his story has so many parallels to lebron it's kind of crazy
i got into a discussion yesterday about wilt vs Kareem Abdul jabbar. this person seems to feel very strongly that Jabaar is head and shoulders above wilt. he said wilts problem is that he didnt make his teams better. i dont know about that. there seems to be a lot of hate for this guy because by himself he was so dominant? dont know
@@vsn611 indeed! Also, LeBron has never have a good coach with him. He and Wilt are arguably the most polarizing NBA greats ever.
some of Wilt's teams had losing records.
That part at the end where he said, “Wilt could’ve been Russell, but Russell couldn’t have been Wilt.” That’s why Wilt is truly a GOAT.
that is utter bullshit. chamberlain could not have done the things russell did, even in his dreams. russell won 11 nba championships in 13 years. one of the ones he did not win, was when he got hurt, and could not play.
@@jimmybrice6360 you sir are changing the rules of the discussion. It’s about who is the greatest basketball player not whom is the greatest winner! And your arrogance does you no credit.
Yet people continue to disrespect wilt due to Russell and the celtics dominance unfairly
I wish I knew if all the stat padding stories were true.

6:40 I think Wilt has been reduced to a mythical being who transcends GOAT convos because of how dominant he was
For me it is a simple argument. Teams win championships, great players dominate their peers. Wilt was the most dominant player, therefore he is the goat.
Having grown up in an era that put bigs in the paint, Wilt primarily played there. an interesting fact about wilt is when he played for philadelphia he lived in new york so every day he had to drive from new york to philadelphia practice all day then play a game, and back then they also played lots of double headers. He has also said in interviews that he was an insomniac and only got a couple hours of sleep every night. To see Wilt triple jump is mind-boggling. His technique, by today's standards, was terrible. No doubt in my mind that if he had grown up now and decided to focus on the triple jump, he'd have the world record.
Wilt still holds almost 70 records and he retired like 50 years ago...if the ywould have added block shots he would hold all those records too but the nba waited for that until he retired , actually that was the greatest compliment they could give Him because they knew, he would had a recordbook all by himself !

My grandpa is in his late 80s and he thinks wilt is the greatest athlete to ever exist. He's one of those people that are born once every couple hundred years that are genetically superior to all other athletes.
If Wilt had competed in the decathlon, I think he’d still hold the world record for points.
He isn't close to the level of the best decathletes in any event. The event he is built for in track is the heigh jump, and he was way behind the best in the country even there.
@@MrErico12345678 At the time he would be a great contender for the decathlon.

Nah, his records are a product of stat inflation.
What a great team
how many years played them together? And why they didn't win any chip?
One thing I see about Wilt is every game meant something to him. He was the Greatest and has never been treated fairly.
I’m very shocked this channel and these videos haven’t blow up with there quality dam that UA-cam algorithm. Keep doing great work man.
This channel is uploading a television quality series in “making the case” and is doing amazing analyzing the game, good luck with the channel and I wish you a bright future in editing or sports!
Wow less than 1k subs?
Dude you're videos are so good and you've only just started.
I'm sure you'll have 100k by the end of the year.
Only thing I'd disagree with was wilt being the 1st superstar. Imo that honor belongs to George Mikan. Just discovered this channel today and I'm LOVIN it bro! 👍🏿
They're were lots of superstar level players even back in the dinosaur ages of the NBA, you forgot to mention Dolph Schayes
Your entitled to your opinion
Wilt led the league in assists _because he wanted to,_ and he is the only center to ever do it. He is also the only player ever to lead the league in assists and rebounds in the same season.
Again I stress the word “only”
Imagine thinking someone did something because they "wanted to" and it not be stat padding.
Thank you for your videos, analysis and fairness in dissecting Mr. Chamberlain...i wish he could've seen this
He's the greatest player of all time. We're just too shallow and too enamoured with Michael Jordan's grace, elegance and demeanor to accept it.
@@davidelsea1296 mj is wilts skill with bill Russell’s winning.
Because Jordan "achieved" what Wilt couldn't. Winning while dominating.

Great job. Really enjoying this series. No, I don't think he's the best. He's certainly in the conversation.
Satori=delusional
Because there were so few teams in the league then, there was no talent dilution, no weak opponent to pad your stats against. It was HOF centre vs HOF centre every night, Wilt gave all of them the business. Every single one of them.
This is my pick for the GOAT. Best athlete, best stats
Idk man I have russell only because when bill russell retired the celtics had a losing record and the season before he retired they won the finals and the season before russell's dokie season they only won 10 more games than they lost and in russell's rookie season they won the finals and when wilt left the sixers only a couple years later they made the finals again if I was building a team I pick russell over wilt but in terms who is better chamberlain but the greater player is russell
dude is so good its literally unfathomable
Best closing statement I've heard on this longest standing argument.
Loving this. Even as a kid of the "80's and being a MJ fanboy, seeing this older footage and your narrative makes me smile.
Most of all because the times were different.
Wilt is not human!!!! He was a Demi god !!! Listen to what Bird and Magic said about him cmon !!!!!
The Most Dominant Force In The History Of Basketball 🏀 THE GREATEST 💘
I agree Chuck! Wilt is the greatest player that I have ever seen.
Wilt is the GOAT and the stats prove it!
WTF do you mean “possibly”
the end gave me chills, good work

Alex Hannum WAS that coach - for a while.
He was the ONLY common factor in the 2 Championships Bill Russell didn't win out of his 13 years in the league - both times as head coach for the opposing team.
To be fair though, he wasn't overall up to Red's level.
A superbly done video, very impressed and I totally agree with your take on this! Great footage, alot I haven't seen before.
The very first time I ever felt compelled to comment on UA-cam. Clayton Crowley, you got something special. Great work.
Just look at him move. I didn't know he was freaking SEVEN FEET TALL because he moves so well. Thought he was some 6'9" forward! Dude is insane!
Seven foot one. THere is footage with Wilt pre-game greeting Ewing and Shaq. Shaq looks like Wilt's little brother.
I've only been watching UA-cam intently for more than a decade... congrats on producing arguably the best series UA-cam now has to offer.
All of these videos are just OUTSTANDING! It‘s so much fun to look and listen how you „make your case“! Thanks for your effort!
Dude these are incredible videos! Keep it up! Still.... IMO Magic is the GOAT

This picture gives me chills to this day.
Combine Shaq and Kareem and you get Wilt.
That there is enough for me to put him in the TOP 8
Wrong; wilt averaged more rebounds per game than Kareem & Shaq…….combined
If you think Kobe>Bron then i really can't take you seriously
I stress the words “no one else”
that 48.5min/game is his most unbreakable record - along with his 55 rebound game

Wilt chamberlain literally averaged 70 ppg as a 16 year old and 100 ppg in the playoffs at the same age, he’s the goat
I would say more like 43 20 4 9 2 but valid argument for the goat tho

maybe because your script and video are being so masterfully put together... now gratitude is exactly what I feel. as a trained historian, I'm inclined to think that it is not clear facts and figures, but rather stories which actually wins people's attention, appreciation, and acceptance.
Awards mean nothing. Stats and records, that's it. Wilt is the greatest. Rest In Peace
Really good video, it looked at things that people dont always look at, loved it I think the coaching point was very interesting.
This is one of the dopest channels on UA-cam!
Even if we'll played in this era instead of the one he did it still be the strongest man on the court and you see less player today that are such phenomenal multi sport athletes.
You forgot Wilt's most important record: Most Poon Slayed.
The first point center, before point centers became cool in the 2010s. End of conversation.
