  • There are eight teams since 1970 that I think you can make the argument for as being the greatest NBA team of all time. The 1988-1989 Detroit Pistons are one of them.

But one question - how did Detroit, who were contenders from 1986-87 to 1989-90, how did Detroit, who beat Portland in the finals 4-1 the year before, GET SWEPT by Chicago just one season later in 1990-91, ?? Impeccable approach, humanizing this team. Their achievements have been contested and belittled more than any team I can think of (or at least prior to 2017). People look at teams like the 2014 Spurs and talk about how it's the most "beautiful" basketball they've ever seen. While I largely share that sentiment, here is a team with the same amount of depth, who played equally exhilarating, cohesive and selfless. The difference of course, being that with the Bad Boys' beauty comes a dash of their brand of ugliness that makes them so singular and compelling.

    Great video but one huge omission is the role of Chuck Daly. I think his role in this team is historically underestimated. He was able to make it work, create the mindset and glue it all together. His ability to make all these characters align should not be understated and accumulated in him being the head coach of the dream team. Daly was such a class act that he never much claimed the championships as his but due to this his contribution is overlooked by the media.

      @@razkable I agree the Pistons don't sweep if the Lakers are healthy, but lose the series? Pistons rolled everyone from the halfway point of the season forward, 37-6 to close out the regular season, then 11-2 in the east playoffs. The only playoff losses and their single home loss for the entirety of the back half of the season were at the hands of Jordan, who the Lakers didn't have the pleasure of facing in their 11-0 run through the West.
      Don't get me wrong, a healthy Magic at the conclusion of an MVP season is a huge change for the Lakers, but Detroit was on fire, and nigh-unbeatable at home. I really like their chances with home court advantage.
      Heck, the '88 Pistons took a healthy Lakers squad to 7, and it took Isiah spraining his ankle, a phantom foul, and Lakers fans rushing the court in Detroit's last possession for LA to grab a pair of one-possession home wins.

    I want to thank you for this. Your video was great but I must add some history that would explain why the 1989 Pistons is one of the greatest teams. 1986, Isiah Thomas wanted out of Detroit. I remember his famous quote, "as long as we get average players, we will be an average team." Then came the 1986 draft and everything changed when the Pistons got Rodman and Salley. Bums like Kent Benson, Earl Cureton and Tripucka were gone and the Pistons got Adrian Dantley, Mahorn lost some weight and got serious and the 1987 Pistons started to believe. I can go on but this was the foundation that the 1989 team was built on.

    I watched every Piston game in the Isiah Thomas era. Truly underrated. He would distribute the ball first three quarters have maybe 10 or 12 points. Then take over the game in the fourth quarter. Usually with a dazzling display of shooting and passing. I played against him in a few pick up games while attending Oakland University (Pistons had there practices their and players would come a few weeks early and play with us college players). His athleticism was mind blowing. I watched him right in front of me from a standstill position jump up and do a 360 degree dunk. Pound for pound the best basketball player ever!

    It might get buried but Daly was a mastermind. You could see he often starts the oldest James Edwards to grab as many post up fadeaway jumpshots in offense to tire the big mans.

    • @drewmiller3
      @drewmiller3 9 місяців тому

      That is what I think some people miss. The NBA was Bird and Magic, then Isiah forced his way on stage. He was right there with them. Knocked both Bird and Magic off at their peaks. And when you played Isiah he was every bit as worth a rival as Bird was to Magic or Magic was to Bird. Even when he lost to Bird or Magic the series were epic and all time. His unfortunate backing up of Rodman's dumb comment tarnished his legacy and turned him from a guy everybody loved (he was insanely popular across the country) to a guy everybody loved to hate.
