Bill Russell tells a story that Wilt once went up to dunk on him and Russell had his hand laying backwards on the rim to block the dunk in a position where the dunk would have broken Russell's wrist. Wilt chose not to dunk and instead used the backboard to make the shot. That is sportsmanship to the extreme and all the evidence you need that as fierce a competitor as was Wilt, he was also an incredibly decent human being.
Lord of stories like this. Wilt actually played a finesse style game. If he’d played in Shaq’s era, I’m genuinely afraid centers would have had more than just their arms broken. The man could bench 600lbs and dead lift 1,000lbs…before any knowledge of rest, recovery, nutrition, or frankly anything concerning modern fitness. The players playing today should literally thank God Wilt played in the era he did
Wilt used his 3rd leg to score a lot it’s rumored that it could lift himself off the ground while he bench presses 1500 lbs with his pinkie toes and tongue
@@nicolo7507 That's an outright falsehood. Wilt did not need his tongue to bench press 1500 lbs. He only needed the help of his tongue when he tried to throw a MAC dump truck loaded with bricks over a 20' fence.

Franklly, I don't remember anybody trash talking WIlt before, during or after a game, nor giving him a hard foul in the paint. All I ever heard was maximum respect. I have to believe that the word was out from day one that he was not to be screwed with on the court and should just be allowed to have his way under the basket (100 points vs. the Knicks?!?!?). Nobody amasses so many probably unbreakable records not having been seriously gang-defended and maybe even targeted for intentional injury over all those years if the other teams thought they could get away with it.

He didn’t hold back he was scared of fouling out because his precious no foul out record. It’s not like wilt was just too good so he stopped trying, he just didn’t like to get to physical and sacrifice

Only three players have led the NBA in scoring and won the championship the same year. So perhaps it speaks more to the need for a balanced team than something specific about Wilt Chamberlain.
Keep in mind that Jackson played Wilt at the end of his career, when he no longer looked to be the dominant scorer. Earlier in his career, there is plenty of film on Wilt sprinting past everyone in transition.
Wilt is an enigma to me. There are folks who saw him play that agree with you, some even say he is the GOAT. But the limited footage I've seen, he doesn't seem like this mythical strongman figure people describe. I also don't like that he didn't show up to face Kareem on their one on one match up. Wilt to me was an incredible athlete, competed in high jump, had an incredible vertical for a big man. Wilt was more busy with women, and didn't have the killer instinct in my opinion. Neither Wilt or Shaq would be on my team of 12.
The problem with Wilt stories not being captured on film enough is that they sound like biblical stories we just put to the side and go with the more believable ones we can see. Those numbers, such strength, such athleticism is once in a millennia.
It really does. When Schwarzenegger comes out and says Wilt outlifted ANY of the body builders they were working out with (and confirmed a 500lb bench), it's too fantastical to believe. Of course you can listen to the stories of Wilt playing pickup games with NBA stars in his 50s and DOMINATING the game and it might make people realize the stories were true.

The first three are no doubt about it. They were published as part of the headline in the Philadelphia Inquirer the day after the game. He absolutely had 53, 32 and 14. The official scorer was Harvey Pollock. He was also the NBA's official statistician. So even though the blocks and steels weren't official NBA stats at the time, they were actually totaled by the NBA's official statistician who used to sometimes total Chamberlain's blocks and steals just to see what kind of numbers the big guy was piling up.

Much respect to Wilt, he's one of the all time greats and one of my all-time favorites. But Wilt was much more dominant in the regular season than the playoffs. The year he averaged over 50 ppg, his scoring average dipped to 35 ppg in the playoffs that year. Elgin Baylor averaged over 37 ppg in the playoffs that year with his Lakers team losing to the Celtics in the finals and Wilt's team losing to them in the conference finals. Russel wasn't close. When you look at their head to head matchups, Wilt absolutely dominated Russel. Bill just always had the better teams (4 HoF teammates). He was a perfect fit for that team and because of NBA rules at the time, they stayed together basically their entire careers. It will never happen again that anyone (let alone several players) win double digit championships.
Wilt was obsessed with never fouling out -- and he never did. So he was paranoid about getting called for offensive fouls and would back off near the hoop. He felt, correctly, that refs would always call the foul on him since he had such a huge size advantage. That's why he developed his legendary fall away jumper, because in HS and college the refs would always tag him with BS over the back fouls if he went to the boards hard, so instead he perfected the shot where he fell away backwards from the basket, even though it took him totally out of rebounding position.

It seemed like they played every weekend and we would wait all week for the game to start and it seemed like EVERY Boston-Philly game was on national TV during that era. I think they probably played 10-12 games every year because there weren't many teams in the eastern conference back then.

I contend that Wilt was the most physically gifted athlete of all time. Maybe a Bo Jackson could give him a run, but that is about it. Nobody that big was ever that coordinated, fast and strong. All the things that make a great athlete, Wilt possessed in abundance.
Phil Jackson is probably the most knowledgeable person, to explain basketball. Amazing, combining playing ability, with a real mind for explaining the game. Amazingly smart. He's as smart in analyzing it, as Michael Jordan was a genius, at playing it.
It was literally will Chamberlain versus the Golden State Warriors with 3 K D’s and Bill Russell. Meanwhile will Chamberlain drive 55 every time on the Celtics. It was just wilt Chamberlain by himself versus literally a Hall of Fame team. So just imagine if Wilt Chamberlain had a shooter on his team. He would obviously have way more championships.

That's an accurate description of Shaq early in his career, but by the end, he was a very formidable center. His post moves were very much improved, and he could handle any of his contemporaries.
People who study the game know the truth. There was Wilt and then everyone else. As great as MJ, LeBron, Kobe, Bird, Magic, etc were, Wilt was at a level above them. His size, strength and agility was otherworldly.
I would like to point out that wilt was a post sprinter in his early career like Shaq was and shaq also was late getting back when he got old. In wilt era centers would be call for offensive fouls Shaq could just knock people down and get away with it
Nothing. Wilt was very gentle. He avoided fouls during the game. So, you bet he wouldn't go and stir crap outside of the game. Listen to Phil saying "Wilt was slow to anger"
There is no comparison..Wilt owns 90 NBA RECORDS AND HAS NOT PLAYED IN 40 Years.. how many does shaq have.. even jordon has perhaps 35 games in his whole career with more that 50 points in a game...Wilt had over 50 games in one year over 50 points.. one year wilt averted 48 minutes per game.. meaning he only miss 12 minutes of one whole season.. come on all only one GOAT....it’s Wilt Chamberlain period..
I keep hearing the same thing from different sources, Wilt didn't play INTENTIONALLY to his full capacity certain years of his career!? Crazy, was the guy from Krypton ?
They also usually say that he didn't play to his full potential, unless you made him angry. That was something you never wanted to do because then he could be downright frightening on the court. Chamberlain at time seem to just like to have fun on the court. Run up stats to show that he was the best at all the different things a player could do. Also, wanting to show his versatility. Those things may have been impressive, but sometimes they weren't necessarily the best for the team.
I just think wilts time was way different he was an oddball in the game then he was bout the only big man that was a true big man nobody could touch him its def not easy to score a hundred point but given the time he played wasn’t that hard shaq in that era woulda dominated those lil boys
No need to decide who was better. They played in different eras with different rules. I really admire how Shaquille has handled himself and done the job he has since his retirement. He knows how to laugh just like Barkley. Don't take yourself too seriously is good advice when you are in the broadcast business.

Wilts was the best player to ever play the game. Bill Russell was close because his focus was on winning and he could care less if he ever shot the ball although he was a gifted scorer.
JStarStar00 that makes no sense. Wilt was a choker. he shot 38% FREE THROW in the finals for his career he just wasn’t trying to draw a foul period the bigger the game the worse he shot from the line REG season 51% Playoffs 46% finals 37%
And that has nothing to do with not getting called for offensive fouls, and doing his best to avoid them so he wouldn’t foul out...
Oh nvm I just saw all your other comments, your a troll
@@bballgriotd-e-e-e-troitbba604 Well first of all, Sam Jones outscored Wilt in their 4th consecutive Game 7 meeting, 24 to 18. Wilt dropped only 18 points and went 4-13 (30%) at the FT line, and the Celtics only won by two points. Did Wilt not have enough help with Jerry West's insane 43-13-12 (and without a 3pt line)? Were his nine missed free throws the fault of Jerry West?
Wilt got hurt halfway through the 4th quarter and with Wilt on the bench, the Lakers cut the 105-96 lead to 103-102, and only lost by 2 points thanks to Wilt's 9 earlier bricks at the FT line.

Bill Russell.

Phil Jackson 🏀💪 good basketball player and a great coach He learned a lot from Red Holzman his coach with the Knicks

Also before they started tracking blocked shots supposedly wilt had 27 blocks in one game 🤯🤯. It's also amazing that almost 50 years after retirement he still holds 90 records and yet even today I heard some idiot on UA-cam with an entire story about how weather Hakeem olajuwon or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the best center of all time which is laughable.
I'm surprised John Salley didn't know that
Btw they've never not tracked this stat.
@@nonamegame9857 but since you want to have a snit and make scenes, Wilt certainly isn't the best center ever either.

KILLER BANK SHOT! 💰
His game was innovative to the point of where it spread to
All positions today
He had a sick fadeaway bank shot.which for whatever reason nobody EVER seems to mention

U would think the media would feel obligated to pass down the stories and legacies of the greats from the past so that they are remembered and honored by the new generations to come but nah.... that's just me being naive.they crucified Kareem for being pro black(as he should) not putting up with the media bullshit so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised another legend is forgotten over time
@Mike Brown I doubt he was using a 3PT hook shot in game, since there was no 3PT line officially until the 1980s.
Did you hear the response from Salley when he heard that Wilt led the league in assists? Hilarious! That's all that needs to be said when asking who the greatest post player of all time is. Scored 100 pts in a game, had a season where he averaged 50 pts & 26 rebs... oh, one season he led the league in assists. Shaq was a beast, but Wilt is the GOAT!
On Shaq's best day, he dropped 61 points in one game, all dunks. Wilt has scored 100 points in one game with turn around jumpers and finger rolls. He also has had 118 games that he scored over 50, 32 games when he scored over 60, and he had six 70 point games.
@victorwiley3739Kareem had his whole 20 year career to try now let his 🥜🥜go 🤡
I occasionally watch some of the games from the late 60s and early 70s. Folks just don't realize how good and athletics guys were back then.
Willis Reed was a stretch 5 before the name was invented. Wilt was crazy athletic, west was fast a heck, Russell, Pistol Pete, I can go on for ever.
The league now carries the ball, take extra steps, palms the ball, can't hand check and play soft. Boring
If Phil Jackson says this, then end of conversation. GOAT
Wilt in his prime would have quardruple doubles every night if he wanted plus the longest playing time and the least foul and the highest shooting percentage, highest score, most rebound, block and assist. It would be like adult playing against kindergarteners.
@Mike Brown he would have scored 200k women too along with titles in score, rebound, block, assist and playing time.
Absolutely no comparison!! Phil is being kind! Wilt was a beast and would have treated Shaq like a child!
BULLSEYE! He did that to Shaq when he was 60 yrs old with just a handshake where he literally shook Shaq's entire body and almost pulled his shoulder out of the socket as Shaq looked up at him in awe.
Shaq is stronger than wilt
Wilt had problems with smaller players Bill Russell and Willis Reed
@@melvynsngltn27 Wilt had zero problems with either of them. I'm guessing you weren't living back then. The stats speak for themselves and Bill had better teams filled with Hall OF Famers. The Knicks (my team) beat Wilt's Lakers when he was old and had long since voluntarily given up being the scoring lead to share the ball more and win a couple Championships. His numbers were still massive. You can always tell when someone posts completely inaccurate stuff about Chamberlain that they likely weren't well informed about him or the era in which he played.
@@slav813 There is no truth to that and it's not even close. This is well documented. It's not like you can't easily find out the truth if you wanted to know. Clearly you don't.
Fun Fact: A statistitian watched and chronicled over 100 games played by Wilt, before accurate stats were kept on NBA games. According to him, Wilt had several QUADRUPLE-doubles, which included 10 blocks per game. Overall, he AVERAGED 8.8 blocks per game. Had a 50" vertical
i would argue that bill is a slightly better defensive player, but not by much. bill russell is the best defender ever because he’s the smartest defender ever. he didn’t block as many shots as wilt did, not because he couldn’t, but because he was smart with which shots he wanted to block to give his team the offensive advantage. again, wilt was a phenomenal defensive player, but bill russell was slightly better and smarter.
@@drac149 What made Bill better? Wilt consistently killed him when they played. Wilt was bigger, stronger, and more athletic. He was a better rim protector than Russell for sure

Wilts basketball skills are vastly underrated........he was a great passer and a good defensive player.......if shaq had wilts skills and agility he would be ranked as a top 3 or 4 player of all time.....still a legend though

@Gregory Campbell ...
You should look up the term "dominant" before you use it here comparing Shaq and Wilt..
Wilt Chamberlain beat Football great Jim Brown in a one hundred yards race. Wilt Chamberlain was a well known track star. Enough said.
Wilt would translate better to today's game because of athleticism and quick lateral. Maybe he will have a tough time shooting the 3, we don't know. But at least he can guard it.
He would have no need to shoot the 3, but except for free throws, he could do any and everything. He was just a giant athlete in outer world shape and size doing it. There's a video on UA-cam of him swishing hook shots from 3 over and over in a shot around. He had made a couple in a row and another center bet him (might have been Neal Walk) $5 he couldn't do it again. Wilt didn't even hesitate, from 3...swish. A HOOK SHOT!!
There's video of Wilt knocking down corner 3 hook shots, one after another, during a practice or shootaround.
He could shoot the 3 but centers, even today shouldn't be shooting 3's in my view, unless they need to. They need to dominate the paint.
@@HamptonGuitars I've heard it's easier for really tall people to hit 3's than free throws since it's a more natural arc from long distance. Maybe if Wilt took his free throws from the 3-pt. line, he would have a better average.

There should never be any real debate about who the goat is. It’s Wilt hands down. He was so dominant that most people think he’s just this mythical creature that never really played. The NBA changed its rules to slow him down, it didn’t work. Wilt is legendary.

Shaq is a freak of nature because of his size. Wilt was stronger though he actually benched more and had better stamina for sure. On top of that Wilt was as fast as a guard. There is a reason his stats are so insane. He was one of the greatest athletes ever.
I love how Phil gives a detailed comparison. It is like how he compares Kobe and MJ. Perhaps the greatest basketball mind of all time along with Tex Winter.

Shaq’s “signature move” would have got him fouled out of every game prior to 1985. Wilt in his prime could easily score 30+ a night in today’s game. What is Jackson saying about Wilt? That trying to avoid offensive fouls was Wilt's limitation? That is a very worthless comment because Wilt NEVER fouled out of game and nevertheless was the only player EVER to average 50 points a game FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON! In addition, why would he need a "jump hook?" Lastly, when he adopted the "between the legs" foul shot (like Rich Barry), his foul shooting changed. When he scored 100 points in ONE game, he made 28 out of 32 foul shots. Shaq and Bill Russell never did anything close to that!
I agree. Wilt is the GOAT! No question about it!

He meant Wilt could have thrown anybody out of his way but he wouldn't. The man was kind enough to find the other way around to the basket.
