First operation on the turret lathe

  • What makes a turret lathe relevant nearly a century after they were created is the fact you can run two tools into the work at the same time, even 3 or 4 with proper setup, while a cnc generally will only use one. In 11 minutes we true the blank and square it off to length, and put 3 bore diameters onto it as well as a o ring groove. All to within .005. Once the parts have had a day to cool will bore the critical diameters to within .0005 on this same machine in about one minute. Then on to the second operation

    That’s a capstan lathe as the back base stays still and the capstan moves back and forth on it. Great to see Digital readout on it. Thinking back how much easier for setting the stops or freehand digital reading like you do, very under rated machines nowadays, as setting the stops is what took all the time.

    En mi experiencia, y en mi opinión, apenas se apretó la parte. Acabo de ver un accidente donde se salió la parte del Chuck y le pegó en la cara a la persona. Casi lo mata, pero pues cada quien trabaja como quiera on your own risk

    now i can see why production increased by like gazzilion percent with the arrival of CNCs
    drill, face, turn OD, rough ID - operator must constantly supervise the machine, takes him almost 11 minutes when he arrives energetic, with good mood and will to work
    on turret CNC lathe with hydraulic chuck this takes 1 minute at most and the biggest slowdown will be the operator who gets bored by repetetive, fast paced work

      I’m carving up 48’ of 7” 6061, by the time I’m done I’ll fill two mini bulk bags with chips. It’s impossible to stay ahead of it unless you want to stop after each part and clean the machine.

      @@rubitracks
      Exactly... Ok, alu is a terror with its rat nesting, but even steel in proper jobs produces a metric shit ton of chips that you cant manage... You can only shield the ways and allow the lathe to be completely immune to any chip damage potential, but other than that, its just swiping loads of chips every few minutes with your right arm behind the lathe... The cleanup can happen during a job if its a long job, as otherwise you might just drown in chips, but with most smaller jobs, the cleanup is reserved for after the job is done... All that matters is that the machine is safe from potential damage or accelerated wear - the mess is more of an optical nuisance rather than anything worse at that point...
      You cant work in a neat environment with machines, as that would mean that you are cleaning every 2 minutes...

      Removing the key from the chuck does not require skill, it requires training. I train my dog to pee outside because he can’t think for himself. Your boss trains you to remove the chuck key because he doesn’t trust you not to hurt yourself. To help you understand the key is in the chuck because I need to be able to hold the billet in the jaws with one hand while still being able to reach the key with the other.

    I'm trying to find out more about turret lathes. Are there any downsides to a turret lathe like this one compared to a traditional lathe, i.e operations that can't be performed on a turret lathe.
    I have the opportunity to buy a made in Japan turret lathe very similar to your one for under 2k and my old vintage Boxford screwcutting lathe is getting a bit long in the tooth these days. And 3 phase isn't a problem for me, I'm just wondering if theres a catch with these turret lathes....

    • @westislespecialprojects
      @westislespecialprojects  2 місяці тому +2

      I can’t speak for all of them but as far as mine goes, it can’t do single point threading, it doesn’t have ratios for it. Also it’s hard to do any kind of bar work that requires a live centre, you can put one in the turret but it’s hard to push hard enough on it and just as hard to lock the turret down tight enough to hold it. Beyond that though I love mine. It’s especially handy for drilling since you can engage the turret and adjust feed rates.
