  • SheZow came under a lot of scrutiny for something very small blown out of proportion. SheZow either appealed to just the right people in a very meaningful way, or was just another show on tv. The controversy actually helped this cartoon more than anything else.

@@kootunesscrewy i did find that kind of dumb. Crossdressing for comedy has existed for a looooooong time, like centuries, and it's been in cartoons since at least the 20s, likely even further back if you count pre-film animation like puppet theater, shadow animation, and paper animation (which are all kind of animation). It was popular with conservatives and liberals alike for a long time since it wasnt really connected with being gay or trans and often just used to poke fun at stereotypes or to make jokes about the person crossdressing. I saw plenty of jokes like these as a kid in the 90s and 2000s, and i saw plenty of these jokes in cartoons going back to the early Disney and Looney Tunes eras as well like you mentioned.

Also Aussie. I found it funny as a kid and never saw an issue with it, it's not like it was outright mocking trans people or anything, it was just a guy who ended up having to crossdress to suit a role and ended up gaining a new perspective on the opposite gender he was now having to cross dress as, which was funny and somewhat interesting as a kid.

I feel like I've suddenly started seeing a lot of fanart and fanfiction about SheZow and they all do a great job taking the base concept of the show and expanding it in interesting ways. Edit: I would like a female lead transforming into a male or "magical guy" / "superhero guy" as the standard in the animated or real series / show (if crossdress, eh, alright. Send 'em). Thanks folks for some recommendations that fit this criteria.

Okay so I am a HUGE Shezow fan, I’ve made fanart, animatics, read like the two fics that exists out there, have an archive blog to preserve old fan media and stuff from the creators blogs, and am on a Shezow discord server.
This video is excellent, perfectly explains basically was Shezow’s actually about outside of its premise and just baseless the controversy was once you look at like a single episode.
It truly is just an average comedy superhero cartoon with a bit of a unique premise and an absurd amount of puns. And I love it for all its quirks!
One thing I will note, is that while the show did in fact not receive as large of a controversy in its home country, the creator has shared that it was still very much a fight to even get made and that he could not in any way center deeper on the whole gender aspect, he had to push to not have guy hate being Shezow. So while it’s easy now to criticize it for not delving deeper into gender, we have to remember it simply wasn’t allowed to back then.
I have a lot to share about Shezow and it’s creation, and love info dumping so if anyone has any questions don’t be afraid to ask me!

Hi, I'm a big shezow fan too, have been for a couple years now and I just wanted to ask because I haven't talked to any other shezow fans but do you know what happened to Obie Scott's twitter? because it seems to have just disappeared off the internet. I forgot how but I think I ended up finding one link that lead to a dead twitter, and then a separate link that lead to ANOTHER dead twitter account. I just find it strange because from what I've read he was somewhat active online during 2013 to 2016 the latest probably.
also do you know about the Obie Scott Wade interview on youtube by the kitsune network? I was hoping that Negative legend would mention it in this video but it wasn't and I was surprised. Scott goes into much more detail about the shows controversy and what he was and wasn't allowed to do while working on it.
if I were to make my own video on Shezow's production thats definitely something I would bring up.

I have seen the interview too! A great watch and it really is a shame it isn’t referred to in these types of videos when I believe it really should be as it gives a lot of necessary context, and is one of the few surviving evidence of his Internet presence at the time.

I also wanted to know because I was curious about hearing more of his thoughts on the show so seeing that his socials were gone was kind of worrying and unfortunate.
There's also a lot of misinformation on the fanon wikia, at least back in 2019-2020 because some of the things in there didn't really make sense or correlate to anything, so I watched the show and tried to look for more info to confirm it and that's when I found out he was gone.
I'm kind of going off on a tangent bare with me but on the Coldfinger wiki entry it said that he eventually joined the side of good, while also stating this his age was 17? None of which is confirmed or talked about in the show I highly doubt he is actually 17.

I watched this as a kid because I was raised off Netflix. I'm NB now, and I always saw the show as a guy dressing up hyper femenine the same way there's tomboys. I never saw it as comedic, just a cool gimmick to add to my collection of superhero knowledge.

I honestly really enjoyed this show and liked the unique concept of a boy carrying the legacy of a female superhero by being her in disguise.
Also I find it funny who the audience and an organization called this offensive yet this pretty much predicted what is going on nowadays. Then like you said crossdressing was done for YEARS so for people to attack this show while enjoying the same concept in others is a bit hypocritical

Hey, I'm an Australian viewer! And I remember watching 2-3 episodes of SheZow.
I remember a channel that used to play a mixed bag of cartoons, I think it might have been Boomarang? Not sure. It was a lot of short run shows with weird premises.
That's where I first saw SheZow, and I remember not thinking too much more about it. It was sandwiched between weirder so I didn't question it at all tbh.

Personally as a masculine looking guy, if I had to turn myself into a super feminine girl to gain powers I would do it.
The notion of femininity is not something that I'm particularly repulsed by because it can be endearing, empowering or aesthetically pleasing (shows like Totally Spies, Sailor Moon etc.. can prove this point I mean boys definitely watch these shows)
I think the point of Shezow is really to address that and show boys that being associated with feminine traits is not something negative or completely opposed to masculinity. You can be both like the main character but still be comfortable with who you are.
In the end it's also a question of exposure, the closer you are to gender diverse people the more accepting you become because they are real people that exist in the real world and not some boogieman like conservative people make them out to be, and i think that's something you see in Shezow, at some point the protags don't care anymore and get used to the fact that Guy is Shezow.

I actually really liked this show and was sad when it was cancelled. I would also dress hyper masculine if that was my power, so long as I didn't have a mustache or beard cause I don't like the look or feel, but I mean if thats what had to happen I would just hope I looked good. And if my powers required hyper femininity, I would just hope the heels are comfortable, since I feel more comfortable in sneakers, and I could move freely enough in the skirt and either had leggings/shorts or no one could see up it due to magic or whatever. The heels would honestly be my biggest sticking point if they are too high or uncomfortable

The question you pose about the superpower thing, personally I identify as like, anything but masculine. And I'm internally just going "ok so like, recreating a Mulan moment? Putting aside personal dysphoria out of the duty to performing ethical deeds? Would it come with the ultimate secret identity detached from my civillian self, as it would mean I'd have to present in a way I otherwise wouldn't be caught dead?"
Like idk, if the dysphoria doesnt create too much of a self esteem issue, I'd be down for it, it'd just be like playing a video game with a set character I dont identify with. My preferred face doesn't have to be the one of justice, im just glad there is a face to it.

i remember watching it as a kid, i'm still a dude, so if it was trying to "corrupt the youth" it did a bad job, but overall i remember liking it, it was never a favourite, but always something i enjoyed.
however, one episode in particular has always stuck out to me, the graphic novel episode, the one where guy tries to reinvent shezow as an edgy graphic novel heroine, only to find out the graphic novel heroes he was copying already respected shezow as a light hearted comic book character.
the message isn't complex, just that liking silly comic books doesn't take away from your appreciation of serious stories, but when i watched it i think i'd begun drifting away from western cartoons in favour of anime, and in that state i likened this episodes message to that of cartoons, that i didn't have to stop watching the kids shows i still liked because i'd begun liking animé and saw them as cooler for being darker, so i didn't stop. again it's not a complex message, but it helped stupid kid me in some way, so i appreciate it for that.
also, never ever understood why it was controversial, that always seemed stupid.

I remember watching shezow as a kid on UA-cam, it’s just a funny superhero show with the concept of “oh wow, Look at this guy! He’s a superhero but a girl superhero!! Oooo” I don’t remember much but I remember some episodes, I always loved the development of how guy, who initially was maybe a lil misogynistic in the first episode(?) became less a-hole and comfortable with his femininity as shezow which is cool
The only thing that comes to my mind whenever I think of shezow are the genderbend episodes of the main characters meeting genderbent versions of themself
I think the ice guy villian and genderbent version of him (a fire lady) teamed up, so shezow and the genderbent version teamed up (and what’s up with shows making genderbent characters, love interests? Idk man I remember the genderbent cast and main cast sorta having a thing??)
I think there was more than one episode about them meeting genderbent version of them
