A superb analyses of our game, with some very interesting observations. Very useful for us as developers, in-fact :) Good work, and looking forward to the next vid!

Just finished playing the game and i totally agree that its a masterpice.
One thing that had me going for a while though was that in the whole game theres literally only one time where you have to combine two things in your inventory. At that point i assumed that this just wasnt a thing in this game and i actually had to watch a letsplay to find out.

You have to do that in the LINCspace too, though. I figured it out pretty quick because I saw the 1993 trailer with said combination.

11:20 Thats the same voice as Lady Piermont from Broken Sword 1's Hotel Ubu!! It just hit me and I've played both games so many times hahaha

    • @SapphireBones

What's more surprising is that the same voice actress who voiced Lady Piermont also voice Nico in the first Broken Sword game.

Scanner death is exaggerated, but I figured that on the third bad scan they might shoot or arrest you and avoided that one anyway lol
For the subway thing - I reckon you can hit a dead end by not picking up JOEY'S card and heading down there.

Great stuff. And you're about the only reviewer / walkthrough player I've come across that actually gets the aspect ratio right! Only that way can you really appreciate the fabulous art work. And it looks even better (imo) if you also use "Filter graphics" in the ScummVM Graphics options too -- lots less jaggies!
I can't say I prefer the Microsoft GS audio, though - e.g. the percussion in the Factory will knock your ears off! 😀

I've played a lot of point and click adventures back in the day, like everybody did, but this one I've missed out on, I did not even know about it till much later when the golden age of the adventures was long over. Broken Sword was the first game of Revolution I've played and I think Beneath A Steel Sky didn't even come out in the country I live.
Now I'm watching this video and since Brazil is one of my favorite movies of all time, even the favorite movie together with Akira, I thought the whole time, this world and the mix of humour and a future totalitarian society, I have to ask about Brazil and I'm so glad this was addressed at the end of the video. I have to pick that up, maybe it will even manage to bring back the love for this mostly forgotten genre.

As a huge fan of the movie Brazil myself, I promise you that you'll love this game. And it's free on Steam and GOG, you won't regret it.

@@SapphireBones Right after I saw your video I've noticed, I already have it in my GOG library, so that's the next game I'll play starting this evening.
Thank you for recommending it as the only person on UA-cam at least I've noticed so far, Four Last Things is now also on my Steam wishlist because of your channel. So keep up the good work on your videos, this was one of the fastest subscriptions I've made so far.

Brilliant review. It's a subscribe from me. Going to watch the Broken Sword one next. This review was so fresh and so thorough, I've not seen any others like it. You gave it the vigour and effort of that of a new game. I'm watching for nostalgia's sake and to get hyped for Beyond a Steel Sky. Very satisfying.

I bought this game originally when it was released on the Amiga on a staggering amount of floppy disks (still have the box and disks, with a manual and comic of the intro in the loft) and this was back before hard drives were standard in computers. Have played it many times and played it again (on PC and Android) when the CD version was given away with ScummVM. Such a great game with typical British humour, filled with sarcasm and was one of the darkest point & click games released at the time. Seems your version of the game has glitches, the CD version on the ScummVM website has ALL of the dialogue present and no gaps like your version.
Weirdly the UK based Revolution Software is still in existence (they were not taken over by a publisher like EA) and made a sequel to the game called Beyond A Steel Sky for iOS, PC and Xbox, released in 2021 and 2022. The sequel still has similar humour, but updated 3D graphics instead with a comic book veneer.

  • @Pingwn
    @Pingwn Рік тому

While I love this game, I personally disagree on some points with the review.
Personally, I don't like the two actions mechanic. I want to figure out what I need to do and not only which inventory item I need, and when you can only look and interact with things you don't really have much options to find interesting ways to use what you have.
Secondly, I feel like tone of the game is a bit too split and broken sword definitely did a better job in balancing between series and humorous tone.
Overall, I really liked this game and it has a really interesting story, characters and world but I think it could use a little bit more polish.

WD40 is not a lubricant! what a plothole!! confusing kids since the 90s!!!
    :D
srsly though, I've seen people "lubricate" their skateboard bearings with WD40 - don't!
it does seem to work for a while but then evaporates all liquid inside the bearing, leaving it bone dry and prone to shatter or simply not roll well anymore.
WD40 is great, you just gotta know what its for and what not.
wow that was kinda off topic ^^

    • @SapphireBones

That's genuinely interesting, I had no idea. Even at my old work place, we used it as a lubricant. Thank you for this! Also, thank you for watching the video, it means a lot to me :)
