      They are badass. I love them. Keep an eye out for my upcoming Beneath A Steel Sky review. It'll be uploaded in a day or two.

    Something interesting about the DOS version: the sound is strange because back then the game used sound cards, hardware there is not available anymore. The SCUMM tries to reproduce the sound, but you need plug ins to emulate the sound card

    I have a head-canon explanation of the "rack operation" dead-end at the beginning of the game. The protagonist is supposed to be the hero: you know, brave, noble and all that. Torturing a defenseless jester by operating a rack is not a noble thing to do and thus if your morbid curiosity takes control over your actions - you don't "deserve" to go further.
    LOTT was my first non-pirated game I got for Christmas around 1993. I was excited as hell, but also couldn't make it out of the first room, because English is not my first language and I was 9 at the time :D I had to buy a gaming magazine that printed a solution to the entire game and only through that I could enjoy the game. It didn't become a beloved classic for me, I don't replay it annualy or anything like that - but from time to time, once a few years, the game pops into my mind and I go on the googling spree to see how other gamers perceived it. Thanks for the video!

    So youtube's closed captions have trouble interpreting the word "Skorl." Nevertheless, I enjoyed learning about this game's "army of squirrels."

      I cannot explain to you how much I laughed at this. Thank you so much for both pointing out that I need to fix the closed captions, AND for giving me the biggest laugh this week.

    I was 13 when I bought this. I was desperate for more point n click adventure games! I'd loved Zak McKracken, Indy and Last Crusade/Fate Of Atlantis, Monkey Island 1 & 2, Legend of Kyrandia, etc.
    Lure Of The Temptress and Cruise For A Corpse I bought just to buy ANY other point n click adventure game! Just because I loved them so much! I found this game particularly frustrating, with the dead ends/wrong answer/no further progression scenarios, and the pixel searching for hotspots on screen. I don't remember completing it, probably didn't get that far! It's one game I can't recall very well! Kyrandia was a bit like that too...

    Whilst watching you progress, I'm getting flashback memories of doing some of these puzzles/screens. I remember having to use that awful combat with that axe! I'm guessing that I may have had a solution in a magazine...
    Edit: I remember I had a print out of the walkthrough which I'd downloaded off a BBS (Bulletin Board System - the precursor to internet websites)!

    What happened to the colour palette? Looks odd. Which version is this?

      Sorry I am 7 months late on answering your question, but better late than never. I was playing the game on an Amiga emulator, so I assume some issues with the emulation happened.

    I recently played this one for the very first time (along with a replay of BASS and the first two BS games). I really liked the art and the atmosphere, and the game sound pretty good with MT-32 support. But honestly I found the gameplay to be pretty mediocre, if not outright bad at some points. Most of the game revolves around carrying a few items to the correct location, and that's more or less it. And when the puzzles do get more complex, they get way too convoluted. The pathfinding and command system are completely broken, and many of the time-based puzzles barely work. The amount of time I had to spend getting Ratpouch to unlock that damn door, ugh. And he got stuck between two areas at one point and I almost had to restart the entire game. And on top of that the story doesn't amount to a whole lot. Not a bad game per se, but it just doesn't have a whole lot of meat on its bones.

      And also I really don't like my joke there. This was before I knew I was trans, and before I was more cautious about jokes like this. Of course I meant nothing transphobic by it, it was just a silly joke on my part. But looking back, I can see how it might be insensitive.

    I remember playing this on DOS and there were no funny honk and bell sounds instead of real sound samples so this is definitely an issue with emulation or wrong sound configuration. I'd recommend disabling all sound cards besides SB Pro within DosBox. On another point hiding behind the post was definitely not the thing to do as I never did that to complete the game. Maybe hiding behind the barrels was it? Or in another room? I do not recall now.

    • @SapphireBones
      @SapphireBones  5 років тому

      I tried hiding behind the barrels, but kept getting caught . The only way I wasn't getting caught was by hiding behind the post. I'll look more into that, but I'm pretty sure there was no other way. I seem to recall even Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation had the same issue.
      As for the sound thing, You might be right about that, as I have never played it on actual DOS hardware back when it came out. I played it for the first time ever when making this video. I'm pretty sure it depends on the type of sound chip the game ran on. As I played it on DOS Box, I assume I could use more modern sound chips to get better audio, as this was the default setting. The game sounded exactly the same on Scummvm. Thanks for pointing that out.

      @@SapphireBones Alright so I have checked this myself. Firstly the sound - as suggested turning off the MIDI (none) in dosbox config will make the game not use crappy sounds. Maybe there is a parameter to launch the executable with to force adlib I don't know. Secondly the part with Skrol is supposed to be handled by instructing the boy to go tell Skrol while you hide upstairs above the dining hall.

      I also have only had the honking sins glitch with GOG.com, I have a boxed PC DOS copy and it's just fine sound wise.

      I recently played this for the first time, and I configured it to use MT-32 support, and the game sounded very good with that configuration. Still only ambient sounds, but all quite subtle and very appropriate.
      And no, you actually need to hide behind the post, but it seems to me this sequence is extremely buggy. I had to try the entire sequence a couple of time before I didn't get noticed, despite doing the exact same thing and standing in the exact same location.

    • @miracleflame
      @miracleflame Рік тому

      @@robinmattheussen2395 You are right, I've figured out the same in the meantime but I have to use CM-32L ROM for the Munt emulator. Then the sounds are very authentic - actually there is a video named "PC Longplay [489] Lure of the Temptress" with those authentic sounds. What we hear in this particular video is mere General MIDI. As for the puzzle I am 100% sure the original solution was to pull the cork, tell the boy go and tell Skorl that the cask is leaking and in the meantime go up the stairs to the balcony and let the show roll... No buggy exploits.

    Being stretched on the rack for a few days does not equal months in a jail wasting away. I can believe the little guy was the only one who could push the bricks.

    • @SapphireBones

      Yeah, but don't forget he wasn't just stretched on the rack for a few days only. He was being t*rtured. So much so that Deirmont couldn't sleep because of his screams of agony.

      I don't recall having such a conversation, but I'll check it out. If that's true, then yeah, that puzzle wasn't that bad, I guess. Thanks for telling me.
