I was able to change the rack on my Ranger thanks to your video. I greatly appreciate the help.
Getting the old one out tested the limits of my vocabulary.
Getting the new one in went pretty easy actually, but I did have to remove one of the hard lines to allow me to rotate the rack into its final position. No big deal.

More difficult with floor jacks and that last rotation to drop into place and to clear the hard line and rotate the passenger side mount in the Ford engineered cradle diviot it a huge PITA. I ended up using a round 3/8 socket shaft in the rack mount hole to get leverage to force it into the rotation. I watched that part of your clip at the 11:50 mark like 10 times trying to figure out what I was missing. Thanks for posting!!

Looks like it went the way you expected! It is a good amount of work to swap over. Way harder on a couple floor jacks. Great video and explanations!

I'm changing one right now and realize it won't come out because my jack stand is under the control arm, thanks for the video👊

I have a quick question people have the seatbelt go through the steering wheel so that the alignment doesnt move, is that true? also when bleeding, you have to put the oil back and then bleed the power steering?

    • @lakesautomotivediagnostics6509
      @lakesautomotivediagnostics6509  День тому

People put the seatbelt through the steering wheel so you don’t accidentally turn the steering wheel and mess up the clock screen, fill up your power steering fluid have the front wheels off the ground and turn it back-and-forth 10 or so times before you start the vehicle to purge air out of the System repeat as necessary

@lakesautomotivediagnostics6509 sounds good! So I just wanted to make sure the part that connects to the steering wheel looks like it has a mark and then another dot to show it was centered(new rack and pinion) sorry I'm not too familiar with names. I've only really done shocks, and oil changes. But I want to get up there. Also the car you worked on was a 4wd mine is a 2wd do you think it might be the same?

@renazarjose4797 should be about the same

I couldn’t get those bushings out. It wouldn’t turn. I had to put a two foot pipe wrench on it and turn it by force to get it out, and I had to drive it out with a sledge from the passenger side once I got the drivers side out of the hole. Thanks for the video!

I have noticed not many shops rebuild the Racks ..... the nice thing about most Suv and trucks with racks there is no sub frame in the way

Thanks for the video. The one I did was rusty and high miles. Those bushings? Had to cut the mounts on the rack to get them out. I'd like those hours of my life back.

I just changed my steering rack with this video. It was a success, however.. I was wondering why you drained the coolant?

Did you hold the steering wheel so that way it’s not crooked?

Was this "new" rack or a reman?

Its always tight when they build everything that compact , its just a matter of remembering all the little steps to get the old one out, as you did, and reverse those steps.

Do you know I don’t know what kind of car that is and I don’t know if you’re doing this for money fixing somebody’s vehicle but if it’s a car worth doing a steering rack and spending all that money to go the extra distance and encourage them to buy all new lines. It’s really kind of a thoughtful thing to suggest because the debris that’s in those old lines, it’s just gonna start wearing out that steering rack with contamination so you know I don’t know. I would certainly replace all the lines going to the extent of putting a steering rack in a car as well as possibly even putting a new steering pump in so that you’ve got a whole new thing is probably maybe a little more than twice the expense perhaps but if somebody’s gonna put that money in it, they’re gonna probably keep the car and I don’t think it’s real and at least replace the lines.
No offense, but certainly up charge and after our steering rack is really not that hard. It’s a profit margin and doing a steering rack is up as 1 million bucks. It’s not really that hard.
