- For today's review we're looking at Doom 64, developed for the Nintendo 64 in 1997 by Midway Games who also made Playstation Doom, seen by many Doom fans as the real Doom 3, but is it any good?

I love the original Version of Doom on PC but prefer the darker vibe of PS1 Doom and 64 . Doom is action but should always have that strong horror element to it.
totally agree, also makes for a much smoother transistion going into doom 3 because the tone is more consistent than if you went into it from pc doom 2.
@@Vakantscull And I’m someone that loves Doom 3. It plays different from the ones before it but the atmosphere and soundtrack are so Dark and fearful the way it should be if you’re fighting demons.
Actaully I'm pretty sure this wasn't full 3D. It pulled off a few room over room like things the same way some other custom maps in doom did by tricking you, and raising/lowering invisible floors.
And that terraformer effect was done with some extra scripting, but rendering wise it's totally doable in the doom engine. They just cleverly mark some of the textures in a way that looks like there's nothing above.
That being said, the doom engine itself was always full 3D, just the level data was stored in a way that was kinda 2D. Just like Duke Nukem 3D and Marathon and other similar engines.
My apologies, you are correct, I've gone back and looked further into it and it does do the invisible floor trick, the one thing that had me convinced initially was the room over room corridors in the first secret level Outpost Omega and it stood out to me immediately, like I actually did a couple of laps just to make sure I wasn't mistaken, alas I was though, bloody convincing though which is still impressive :)
Funny how Goldeneye completely overshadowed DooM 64 back in the day, yet DooM 64 aged way better
Couldn't agree more, I'll be getting round to goldeneye at some point this year and I'm honestly terrified about how badly it will have aged mechanically...
@@Vakantscull And Goldeneye’s frame rate is atrocious. I’m guessing it runs between 15-20 fps most of the time (I haven’t watched DF do an analysis of it, so I could be wrong, but it definitely does not run smoothly).
@@Vakantscull If you want to use modern controls for goldeneye, opt to use the LEFT hand for the the D-pad for movement and strafing and L button, and RIGHT hand for stick aiming and turning. Choose 1.2 Solitaire control style.
@@shaun8062 no, use c for movement, holding the middle prong with right hand, your left wrist resting on your right wrist, use your pinky for A B and Start, and your middle 3 fingers to move WASD style
@@talibong9518 lol yea hey let's just get the twister pad out and use that to play goldeneye in yoga positions.
am i the only one who likes this lo-fi feeling of a game with low rez textures and choppy, claymation like movement to enemies that comes due to their limited animation frames. it emulates such a cozy nostalgic feel to it.
24:50 This game had 3rd person cutscenes way before Doom Eternal.
Exactly! and you never hear anyone complaining about this one! 🤣🤣🤣
I was (still am) a big Doom fan. I first played the PC original back in 1994 and I was instantly hooked. I spent the better part of two years trying to get a decent console port of Doom finally settling on the Jaguar in late 1994. That didn't last long...
On 9/9/95 I got both my Playstation and Saturn with the hopes that one of them could deliver. Deliver the Playstation did. I was absolutely enamored with Playstation Doom and I was perfectly content for awhile. I didn't want an N64 and of course had a gluttony of great games to play. That is until my best friend got an N64...with Doom 64. I was absolutely blown away by it and I had to have it. That was the game that drove me to buy an N64 that night...well that, and Goldeneye.
Addendum- The chainsaw is not situational. I use the chainsaw against every Pinkie and Lost Soul I can. If you catch them just right it can make mincemeat out of Cacodemons as well. Well as long as you keep to the Ultraviolence setting (any Nightmare setting comes with fast monsters). Once you add fast monsters to the mix the chainsaw is absolutely useless as it doesn't dps fast enough to stun lock them.
Never understood how Doom 64 got lost in the shuffle. It was and always will be my absolute favorite Doom game.
Oh man that Invader Zim gag at the beginning was great. Always thought this game still holds up okay to this day.
yeah it was a callback to the intro of the playstation doom review haha :P
I just found your channel like 3 days ago and you have some awesome videos. I played Doom 64 at a cousin's house in 1998, but never got to beat it. I finally beat it on PC using the Brutal Doom Mod and a Rom a few years ago. I have the cartridge somewhere, but I don't really play on my 64 anymore because it is so hard for me to see on it nowdays.
I did hear the game was initially pitched as Doom 3, so maybe ID was just in the planning stages of their own version. But it's definitely more Doom than Doom 3 was.
Amen to that! Gotta feel sorry for poor Carmack, knowing that even with 6-7 years of technological advancement they're official sequel wasn't a patch on a Nintendo console exclusive
Why does this video only have 300 likes!??!? It's absurdly good for such a small channel.
The music on ps1 and 64 will always make those ports epic to me. The dude made quake 1 and 2 ports great too.
It's not without reason that Hectic is declared a Super Secret Level.
The level calls for skill in the game.
But you can get the items ok 2 of them you can't get the armor with the telefrag.
But you can get the one under the pillar because one of the four sides is different if you go in and out through it you won't get crushed.
You can also get the Supercharge and it is also necessary for the rest of the easy mode for the map.
If you position yourself so that you are on the edge of the trap and then walk backwards you can get the supercarge without fall into the trap.
The trap will still be triggered.
Now comes the part that makes it the easy part and that's not a bug in the game on the map but intentional ;-)
in the time when the supercharge trap is active and the columns are gradually coming down, the other three traps are deactivated.
so you can just get two of the necessary keys, the one with the Hell Knights and the one with the Arachnotrons without triggering the traps.
However, you then have to make the key with the dart trap.
But the trap is still the easiest when you have to make it
Nice, comprehensive review, like the one for PS1 Doom. Well done sir. 👍
Awesome video! I’m really enjoying your content.
I got an N64 for Christmas ‘97 and I thought, until just last year, that Doom 64 was a port of the original Doom. I remember passing it up in Hollywood Video because I already had the PS1 version.
Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised at how awesome this game is! I love the lighting, the sprites, the soundtrack, even the gunplay feels amazing. It was a little frustrating having to look a few things up (like the barrel secret on level one), but it’s worth it. This game is exceptional in every way.
It's still the 2.5D engine we've always known. The trick is massive scripting that lets it "fake" room over room. When you pass certain points, it activates scripting that adjusts the level shape on-the-fly, so the ground level becomes a second floor while you aren't looking at it.
Full watch. I really appreciate the work that must have gone into making this. You deserve way more subs. Great Job
Ah thanks that really nice of you to say :) but honestly as long as the videos are giving some enjoyment thats the important thing, thanks for the support!
Love this game and huge credit for using the actual N64 version. I had this game in my childhood. It was one of my first experiences with Doom and it scared the crap out of me.
The only thing you didn't cover that I wish you would've, is the level Alpha Quadrant. That level in my opinion is when Doom 64 truly opens up. There's several setpieces in that level that are memorable. The one that always gets me is the room with the platforms and the dark pit filled with spectres. That was the stuff of nightmares in my childhood.
And to think: James Rolf and mike matei barely even tried to play the first two levels of this game
Doom 64 doesn't do "room over room" much more efficiently than the PC original. The scripting system allowed you to raise/lower floors and ceilings, as well as change lighting/texturing, all through a linedef trigger. The engine was still limited to a single ceiling and a single floor, but the trigger could instantly change a number of parameters, making it look like rooms were stacked on top of each other.
Great game, completed it my Ultra HDMI N64 before I sold it 3 years ago, so crisp and sharp, then completed Nightdives release on Xbox One X. Good times.
I actually played this some at either a cousin's house, a friend's house, or an uncle's house when I was a kid probably more then one of the above. I never made it past level 3 until I got the remaster though. I think calling it Doom: Absolution instead of Doom 64 would have been much smarter because I bet many Doom fans skipped this back in the 64 era thinking it was just a port of Doom I, Doom II, or both instead of a new game.
that PAL footage looks so crispy
Awesome video! This game has huge nostalgia for me, when I bought this back in the day it cost £60! Everyone seemed to turn their nose up at Doom 64 when it was first released because basically it wasn't Goldeneye and I do feel it got a (unnecessarily) rough reception. But Doom 64 has aged WAY better than Goldeneye. Granted it didn't have any multilayer (which is baffling) as the N64 was a multiplayers dream and the lack of reload animation for the shotgun and super shotgun was just lazy. But you cant not love this game! 😃
Doom 64 has definitely aged better than Goldeneye, I'd almost be tempted to say most n64 first person shooters aged better than Goldeneye, even Quake 64! But you're right Doom 64 is just a fantastic playthrough, I've even gone through it again on PC again since this review came out and may well do again on PS4 at some point, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Multiplayer is one thing I wish they had added to the new releases. I knew they wouldn't, but I wish they had added coop/ deathmatch
Disagree. GoldenEye really hasn’t aged as much as people say. I can still pick the game up and play as well as other amazing N64 FPS like Perfect Dark.
It’s so strange to me that people say n64 was a niche console everyone I knew had one but I live in New York
I played the original on pc but never played this version, i did not have an N64, only had SNES until about 97 when I got a PS1 :( this looks way better than the pc ver by far!
I always thought this and ps1 Doom were the most as close to pc Doom as possible. And then some with the newer enemies, guns and animations.
they pretty much are, other ports like snes and 32x and jaguar range from average to unplayable, and on some level I actually prefer them to pc :)
@@Vakantscull From what I know sega saturn and jaguar did not start from pc but from ps1 port so technically ps1 is the closest we have yup.
You’d think that when they remade Doom 64 they would reinstate any content they had to cut like the reload animation and certain enemies, apparently they had this other new enemy they were going to introduce it was a two headed demon dog.
Hectic literally is it's name's sake! I've beaten Hectic three times, twice in Doom 64's Nintendo Switch port and once in the PC port on Game Pass and each time I did lots and lots of save scumming to progress through it since despite me being mediocre at boomer shooters I still love them and will choose boomer shooters over Soulsbournes any day but that's just me. I'm currently playing Doom 64 on Game Pass with my Acer Predator Helios with the main campaign on Watch Me Die rocking half of it's achievements, gotten the first Demon Key and am currently on level 5. I'm basically achievement hunting this time around which is why I'm playing on the hardest available difficulty since one of the achievements require you to beat a level on Watch Me Die. I 100%ed Quake Remastered's achievements on Steam I can do so with Doom 64 on Game Pass. Nice review and I think that Doom 64 is the most underrated mainline Doom title!
I've managed it on PS4 and PC, but with the original N64 controller it's so awkward to control 😅
@@Vakantscull PC it was with mouse and keyboard for me and for Switch it was on handheld both times!
When i was a child around the year 2004, i found a cartridge of Doom 64 in my basement. it was left there by the previous residents. needless to say it scared the shit out of me
That was mine, I forgot it. Can you return it to me?
Ahh the nostalgia in this one! Definitely brought back some memories, nice review!
Doom 64 is surprisingly good. While I actually owned it for the N64 I've never finished the original. I have beaten the PS4 port, Doom 64 EX, and Brutal Doom 64. The biggest flaw is the lack of enemies, you really start feeling it halfway through. So many barons, they're around every corner. It is unfortunate some the the corner that had to be cut to make the game, like less animations and enemies. A new weapon is cool, but I've never found the unmaker that exciting. And the one added enemy, the nightmare imps, really aren't terribly exciting either.
I loved this one, oddly enough even though I mixed this up with 3, I have more memories of this one than any of the other games. The concept of collecting secret items throughout the game to reduce the end boss difficulty by a fraction with each secret item collected was incredibly creative and impressive and I would love to see that concept done in more games. To me Doom 1 and 2 seemed a little too easy, whereas this felt akin to a Soulslike game in that I felt accomplished when I completed a level (after dying several times). Definitely the best one in the series.
Really? I cannot even get past the 2nd level in Doom 2. That is a super hard game. The first and N64 seem easier.
Damm brining back some old memories Ahaa dope my dude ! Keep up the great work!
The Lost Souls in Doom 64 ARE faster! Basically they attack as if you’re playing on Nightmare difficulty! They take fewer hits to kill, though.
That looks brutal but some nice ideas. I like the extra puzzles and the unmaker... but that's going on insane levels of working out to get all the secrets!
DOOM 64 is a great game. I still love it after so many years. I still keep the N64 console and many 3rd person shooter and ego shooter) and one of it is DOOM 64. It looks great and the backround "music" is verry good. Okay, some demons and weapon reload animations are missing. But the game is still very good.
gonna have to check this out, played Doom 2016 and it was dope. love old games that can still be amazing years later
The first secret level in the game is found in the first level.
hate the lost soul enemies, hardly used the chainsaw in doom 64 on the emulator and I know I played this when I was young but my memory is so dead lol, I actually thought this was a reboot story not a sequel, I do remember this game being hard that I did not even bother completing it, so I just use to reset and start gain lol, really enjoyed this game and really enjoy your videos, you must have mad control to be completing these games, even if some of them are broken or really hard
Another great video!!
Thanks for reminding me how booty this game was on N64. The modern releases are a million times better
Why could they not add archville using mother demons line of fire attack and revenant with existing homing missiles?
I actually did play this game when it first came out and I loved it! Well uhh...actually I loved the game but not the controls, which really damaged my enjoyment of it at the time. I was waiting for this game to get an official port forever. I was almost more excited for the PC port of Doom64 than Doom Eternal, honestly.
I picked this off the ps4 for like £1,50 😂 i did the first few levels ..
Reallly cool
awesome video mate
Great video my dude i just shared on my facebook feed, i'm definitely grabbing this now have you played the steam port at all?
Yeah the steam port runs great with keyboard and mouse :)
i could imagine this game with ray tracing
I only ever played this with the invincibility cheat.
I've seen Doom all my life, but I can honestly say I've never played any of the games.
That's okay :) just checked out your video game movies episode, have you seen the Doom movie with Karl Urban and The Rock?
@@Vakantscull I enjoyed it for what it was. There is also a movie on Netflix called doom annihilation. Lore is closer to the game but the main character is not Doom guy.
Well, they're all on Game Pass, and on switch. While I'm on break at work, I like to pull out old-school Doom for a good 20 minutes on break. Good stuff, even decades later.
Nice video bud.
Most of my teenage years was N64, never once picked up the Doom 64 game
Mainly because I was fixed on Mario 64
exactly, no one played this, I'm really glad it's grtting some love again thanks to rereleasing alongside doom eternal :)
I just cannot stand the look of the weapons and no reloading frames on Doom 64.
There is a glitch in Hectic that you can exploit to make the level more possible to complete. See TheSeriousCacodemon’s video; The Melancholy of Hectic Glitching to see how it’s done. There’s only one problem: you have to use the analog stick.
I'll take the L haha
@@Vakantscull The exploit can be done in the new retail ports as well, no N64 stick required. It's still tricky to pull off, but the new ports have quick-save/loading, making repeated attempts less painful. :)
Bought it on day 1 when it came out. I was a huge Doom Fan, so I have to have it in my collection. Loved it and I was so happy about the remaster!
The best console based Doom game.
I agree that this one is the true doom 3. That other one must have came through a portal from another dimension or something
exactly! It literally follows on from doom 2 😆
And Doom Eternal confirms that it is canon, while Doom 3 was an alternate universe.
I would consider this a true doom 2 than doom 3, where as I consider doom 2 more of a add on to doom than a sequel
Nothing presents the challenge quiet like the old ones! Have you seen Ion Fury? Being a fan of old school fps's you might fall in love!
And you'd be right! Love me some good old build engine shooters like Duke 3D, Blood, nd OG Shadow Warrior, so I grabbed Ion Fury day 1 haha!

I agree about the N64 horrible controller , , there's an awesome replacement controller for N64 called ""Brawler 64 "" makes a lot more sense I totally recommend it 👍👍😎
Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out! :)
... Doom 64 on the ps4 is great also ...
2:52 where?
sorry, forgot I'd removed the comment, it's near the start of my video list on the channel
Is this available as a PC game? Hard to believe these old games used to be sh$t back in the day :P nice video and good editing
Yeah it's was ported to PC and all modern console in March this year to celebrate the release of Doom Eternal :)
I rly didn't like the n64 one. The graphics were plasticity and I was constantly lost. (I played it when it was new btw)
Doom 64 is definitely the real Doom 3 and vastly superior to the so called "Doom 3" we got. It is a continuation of 1&2. It has a strong horror atmosphere feel without taking away from the classic doom gameplay style. "Doom 3" we got in 2004 feels like a tech demo(also a super rubbish shotgun). Some of the terrible plain of jump scare. Slow ass gameplay. Doom 3 is a great game but it should not belong to Doom series at all. Would have been great as a stand alone title by ID. As I say Doom 64 is the better action horrors. So why don't Doom devs just attempted to replicated the Doom 64 when they were about to developed another Doom as an ultimate horrors on new graphical engine back then ?? You know ID could have make a better Doom game that could be balance on horror aspect with fast paced gameplay if they just make it like Doom 64.
I don't really like Doom 64. I'm doing a full chronological playthrough of all Dooms and this is a massive hiccup. I think I'm on about map 17 and I just CBF going on and I don't really know why.
So this is supposed to be doom 3??
yup! it takes place directly after the events of Doom 2 :)
IDKFA lol
I'll see your IDKFA and raise you an IDDQD and one Dopefish ;)
Worst DooM ever made. I can literally beat this game without losing more than 50% health
Doom64 was going to have split screen. If i remember right, the reason was people would not play on a small screen.
Doom 64 suck
DOOM 64 would have been better if it had constant rock music. It didn't and for that I hate the game.
