I'm kind of disappointed with the EON, especially because the price point and comparing it to the Ultra HDMI. The prices I think are to close. So I think when I get the chance, I might spend a little extra money for the best results on the Ultra HDMI.
It is nearly identical to the retrotink 2x on svideo, but that device you can use for multiple consoles. Also with a fairly cheap mod you could upgrade the N64 to RGB and use hd retrovision cables for component output (even use the deblur if you use tim worthingtons rgb mod) I say go with either the ultrahdmi or upscaler like retrotink or OSSC over the EON.
For the average person with no electric/soldering skills, an Ultra HDMI upgrade will cost well over $300. True, it doesn't seem like the EON plug looks any better than S cable upscaled, but for the simplicity of going straight to HDMI, I don't think the price is unreasonable.
@@UltraHealthyVideoGameNerd For the HDMI options I'd say the RetroTiNK is the best option for the money and ease of use, it doesn't require soldering and it gives you very similar if not the same results as the EON via S-Video for $50 less and also can be used with other systems / connections. I have one and its great.
Lots of the best mods require soldering. I can solder, but I don't have the equipment for it. Soldering is actually pretty easy. You just have to be careful with it.

The hyperkin darkness is just a matter of balancing the color, brightness on your TV you can see clearly that there's too much red on it when compared to the other solutions. If you remove some of the red and maybe add a little yellow I'm pretty sure it will make a huge difference and become more like the other ones.
You could definately improve it, but units that take advantage of the S-video signal will always have more potential brightness (and dark detail) than ones that upscale from composite. S-vid has a fourth "luma" channel that transmits brighness data in addition to the cyan-yellow-magenta channels. It's really the only advantage of S-vid over composite, but the extra brightness range is noticable.
AttunedFlux: True, due to the 3 color channels being better separated, fair point. I'll always use s-vid over composite if it's available. "~Technically~" i belive it might also be possible to push a marginal sharper signal than 480 through s-video, though i think it's unlikely that any source media or video components that utilised the extra bandwidth would ever have existed..
Great video, thank you for the nice content. If I may just point out one thing that would have made the comparisons a bit easy to follow, I would refer to the Quake 2 comparisons. It would have been way easier to see the footage if it was divided into 4 quarters to see the whole image as apposed to the vertical slats. The vertical slats were really disorienting. Hope this helps :)
I kind of refuse to spend 149.99 on the EON. So I will probably be a cheap bastard and buy the Hyperkin just to be able to play on my modern TV and not have to have two hooked up.
Honestly I'm getting the hyperkin just as a backup, I'm fine with AV, but if I go to a friend's house and he doesn't have a TV that has an AV port I can use the HDMI.
Yeah not really worth the cost by the time you consider you have to solder it in at $165 when other plug and play options are readily available, I'm experienced in micro soldering but there is always a chance of fucking it up particularly the ribbon cable. You could pay an installer but then you're taking a risk with them and you're doubling the price just to get the best possible picture out of a game system nearing 30 years old, doesn't make any sense especially now since N64 clones are starting to be made. The difference between S-Video with the RetroTiNK 2x and the Ultra HDMI is tiny when you consider price and that the RetroTiNK can also be used with other systems.
@@stephenhogan5924 That's why people who are into retro games shouldn't be so quick to adopt 4K or 8K (Yes there is an 8K TV that exists by Samsung I think).
Yea whoever said it's not needed or not worth it y'all are insane. I have the Ultra HDMI mod and it's amazing. Literally top tier and the BEST quality for the N64 hands down.
With the Eon, you just plug it in with an HDMI cable and you’re done. The retro tink needs one cord for its own power source, another cord for the N64, and one more cord for the HDMI. It’s a lot more messy in comparison. It’s probably not worth an extra $50, but I’d still prefer it for its simplicity.
Check out Nintendrew's video about this and judge again. On its own it is not that special, although it does not require additional power supply, *But in the correct setup it is probably comparable to the UltraHDMI mod! *
@@overlordalfredo Nintendrew's video comparison is very misleading. Check the comments and youll see he forgot to use svideo cables with the retrotink2x in his comparison because he happened to not own any. I brought this to his attention on twitter which is why he added the disclaimer and pinned it in the comments. When using svideo the retrotink2x and eon adapter should look identical because they both linedouble 240i to 480p.
@@ians_parks I did saw that, but tbh this is not a huge factor as Svideo is not a great signal to upscale to HD. The retrotink is indeed pretty close, but in the correct setup the EON is more powerful than the retrotink. The EON is still too high in price though as a standalone adapter and if you have multiple consoles to hook up you might want to use the retrotink anyways. But for the N64 the EON is the better option
Dude..Thank you for these videos. I don't even ever plan on owning an N64 again..let alone doing one of these setups. Yet im still interested in this sort of thing. Maybe its cause I grew up with this legendary console back in the day. And I have a soft spot for anything related to it. Needless to say.. I know not everyone will appreciate the amount of effort put into a production like this...But I do. You are a great UA-camr, and you continue to get better. Love your content. Keep it up.
Watching RGT85's comparo for the EON, he added the MCable into the mix, which when coupled with the EON, had astounding results almost at the level of UltraHDMI. Of course, that brings the combined price up to 'almost' UltraHDMI levels, but no modding required. Love your video man. Great comparison across a dynamic selection of titles that cause these things to jump through a lot of hoops. Cheers mate!
For the hyperkin cable, I had to adjust the tint setting on my tv to get the colors to look right. Also If your tv is on game mode it makes it a little brighter.
come on the ultraHDMI has a very high chance of fuckup I'd prefer the RetroTink or the Hyperkin cable I don't care, adjust brightness or colors on the TV set itself whatever
@@316whatupz seriously? Well, perhaps you're a soldering master, but I'm far from it...killed a lot of my tech, so NO! I'd rather use cables than try and solder myself....by saving you might spend more...
I think Eon and Retrotink could be the optimal solution. UltraHDMI appears to have some problems, such as the lines from interlacing (I think that's what it's called), and just appearing overly sharp for some parts of games (not for all parts/games, because for some parts/games it looks very nice). I don't think the games were originally intended to be displayed that sharp, due to being optimized for SD CRT display, and LED HDTV simply not existing during that time.
I gotta say, the retro tink is the best option, you can use multiple consoles, plus you can rgb mod your n64 for relatively cheap then just buy the Retrovision hd snes cables, and most consoles natively output rgb, that gives you a great picture for cheap I say the win is retro tink
You really do a great job in this video! Really clear to understand, side by side comparison and full screen comparison, and giving a good advice at the end. I Think I will go for the RetroTink for it's versatility (can be used on different consoles), PAL compatibility, easy to install, and it's price (remember that you can use it on multiple consoles!). The EON Super 64 is also an interesting option, but it's current version doesn't support PAL. The UltraHDMI is of course also interesting, but is a lot more expensive, requires some soldering skills and you have to mod your N64 to make it work.
@@RetroMoments Honestly I'm jealous, I really am starting to think that the price is justified if you enjoy playing the N64 enough. @@crimsontide1980 Absolutely, it is. Oh I see. I've been emulating through the Wii as well so I understand xD I was always looking for solutions and was never happy with anything. Just bought my RetroTink yesterday! Now I just have to wait for it to come in the mail 😔 If I'm gonna be quarantined might as well try and beat some classics I never could when I was younger; in HD! (Perfect Dark, RE2, list goes on...)
Thank you. This is the exact video I needed. I've been trying to lighten my load, and I can cover most consoles with emulation, but N64 is looking like the one I would have to keep original hardware.
Got my RetroTINK-2X Pro + HD Retrovision Component Cable + RGB modded N64 all set-up. Your videos helped me decide and the end result is pretty impressive, thank you.
It is pricey, but you can then buy just an RGB mod for like $30, or $70 installed (just have to ship them your N64). Then you need to get either an RGB Scart or HD Retrovision Component cable fed into the RetroTink or OSSC. All that probably winds up being more than the Ultra HDMI... but you can use the set up for all your retro systems at that point.
Thanks for doing this Metaljesus, the N64 is the trickiest console to get looking good on a modern TV (without spending a fortune) and as soon as I heard about the EON Super 64 I thought I wanted to try it out, so this is exactly the kind of comparison that helps someone in my situation. After seeing the footage, I'm guessing it won't look that much better than S cable going through my Framemeister, but I still want to give it a try.
Dont get scammed. Eon is price gouging consumers. Wait until there's more competition and they stop charging double what their adapters are realistically worth.
I've been waiting for this since they announced the EON connector. Recently moved into my first apartment and had to say goodbye to my beloved (albeit very heavy) CRT television with S-Video and I've been on the hunt for an effective way to play my N64 on a flatscreen. This video is exactly what I needed, super in depth, side by side comparisons. You always go above and beyond dude, thanks!
Everything except the UltraHDMI looks like a muddy mess. You sure you're actually capturing these right? EDIT: The smoothing options is what ruins it. It's like putting a blinear filter over the whole image. The N64 is muddy enough on its own.
It looks like a muddy mess because without modding the N64 it is outputting only composite NOT RGB. Upscaling or line doubling composite still looks like ass.
What keeps you from just turning the brightness up on your TV with the Hyerkin? Heck, you could, if you wanted to even slightly adjust the colors. For the money, and the ease of use, it seems like a great solution for someone who just wants to play some old games. Unless there is lag - which I assume isn't an issue since it wasn't mentioned.
*Ultrahdmi* - 1 frame of lag because of the digital conversion *Retrotink2x* - zero lag because it linedoubles svideo to 480p *Eon* -zero lag for the same reason as the retrotink2x *Hyperkin* - some input lag because its upscaling to 720p.
For the money, the RetroTINK is the best value (since, remember, it can be used on multiple consoles). The other 3 options only work on the N64. The UltraHDMI does, undoubtedly, offer the best N64 output, but I think the RetroTINK is the most versatile.
@@ians_parks Yeah though I think realistically if you had the option and could only pick one, I like to imagine most would choose the Retrotink to save some money. The Eon looks about the same and you pay extra for the convenience of less cables, which is a matter of opinion if you think its better, but I personally don't see it as worth the extra price.
I find these comparisons a little misleading personally. You mentioned that when the RetroTINK was tested it was with S-Video, whereas the UltraHDMI is a solution closer to an internal RGB mod quality wise - It looks better not because it's the TINK's fault exactly but because all it has to work with is a stock S-Video signal. Because of this I would have liked to see the comaprison of an RGB modded N64 with HD Retrovision's Component Cables going into the TINK as well.
Hardware-wise this is a pretty great alternative for those who have a nice cartridge collection and wish to continue playing them. Personally, we prefer to rip our own carts and emulate them for our Let's Plays as it gives us the highest quality/resolution/fps but not everyone has this option or even knows how to accomplish this. For those who still have their childhood consoles or bought one recently, this is a great option as it significantly reduces jaggies, cleans up artifacts a fair bit and it's just nice to be able to plug your console into current gen TVs. A bit of an investment but you're going to have to invest in something to keep playing the classics one way or another. Great video MJR \m/ ~Shade
EON 64 is functionally a Retrotink 2x with the chip identification numbers sanded off and covered in epoxy and locked to only N64. It's compatible with the SNES, but you have to cut out the back of the SNES to make it fit. Retrotink 2x is a better value because it's more versatile while also being cheaper. As for the Ultra HDMI, price and availability are basically the only weaknesses.
I actually liked the Hyperkin cable. The Ultra HDMI was obviously the best though, although if it added smoothing, I think that would be the complete package.. But I'm not sure the Eon or Retrotink would be worth the extra over the 3 in 1. But the versatility of the Retrotink makes up for this. And the smoothing worked well.
RGB over SCART mod to OSSC is the best imo. The colors just really pop with that RGB signal and the OSSC does all the work of making the games look HD.
If you set the control scheme in Goldeneye to 1.2 (Solitaire) put your left hand on the D-pad and right hand on the analog stick, it feels nearly identical to the modern standard.
@@happyspaceinvader508 Dual controller mode is ambitious and works pretty well, but it's not really worth it grab another control just to turn D-Pad movement to analog. It's the aiming the really matters in that sense. Plus I find it uncomfortable after a little while playing like that.
Hello.. is it just me? or, has everybody forgot that you can adjust the brightness, contrast and sharpness of your picture on your actual TV to make it look better?... I mean, no disrespect intended, but the darkness on the hyperkin cable can easily be resolved by adjusting thos controls on the TV or display... isn't? am I out of line here?.. thank you :)
Everyone is aware you can adjust the color and brightness on hdtvs. Problem is if you want to use that input for anything else other than that cable then you have to adjust it back and forth. Its just an annoying workaround for a problem that shouldnt exist to begin with.
OPTION #1 - Super 64 = $150+ or OPTION #2 - N64 Svideo cable = $5 + RetroTINK-2x = $99 #2 Saves you $46 + gives you the option to line double perfect RGB signals from many other classic systems when using YUV HD Retrovision cables.
Thank you for a unbiased review. UA-cam has been flooded with reviews that turned out to be just advertisements. I am very grateful that you have given us, the people an informative and factual video on then product. I wish more channels had the same integrity. Keep up the good work.
If I hadn’t already paid £230 to get the UltraHDMI mod added to my N64, I’d go for the Eon, as it’s by far the simplest solution... no cables required except the HDMI cable you want to use with your TV.
They probably aren’t being made anymore, that’s why N64 digital pre orders went out of stock so fast. Try and wait for Dan and his team to restock the digital, it’s going to have dual RGB and HDMI output.
Also color palate can be changed on the tv. I watched another video on that cable and it was too light on it lol. Alot depends on tv's and their settings. If your a purist, get the ultrahdmi, if you just want to connect an N64 to a modern tv, Hyperkin
I bought a retrotink (and a spare) and I am very happy. I use it on my Saturn as well.... Funny that I turn smoothing off on my Saturn most of the time, but on my N64 I keep it turned on. :)
Important to note: like MJR said the RetroTink 2x also outputs component which will look better than than the s-vid output showed in this video. Also the quality of the cables are VERY important when trying to get good picture quality (regardless of which type of output u go with)

With the RetroTink you get the results of the EON adapter and you can use it with all the consoles. In conclusion if you're not gonna get a hdmi mod buy a RetroTINK.
The EON is hands down the best in my opinion. Very close image quality/color/brightness replication on a digital TV that the best CRTs had when N64 was top dog.
The retrotink2x looks exactly the same (not making assumptions) and works on mulitple systems. Thats why it is worth $99. The eon adapter however only works with the n64 or atleast was only ever designed to and yet it retails for $150. Removing the external power requiremnt doesnt warrant charging double what the adapter is clearly worth. They are price gouging consumers purely off the convenience factor. Dont get scammed and wait for more competition or for the price to come down to something actually reasonable.
@@ians_parks This is untrue. Just look at the comparison on this video of him playing a couple of these and you can see the Retrotink's image has an almost yellow filter on it by comparison to the Eon and UltraHDMI. Look at the sky especially at 6:55. It depends on the game of course, and doesn't exactly justify $50 to people with no money, but there IS a visual difference in how the Retrotink handles the N64 library. It does a worse job overall compared to the Eon. They are clearly not interchangeable in quality.
@UCQOMXTNtKLLZUVr1JYCn-yA There is no perceptible yellow tint with the retrotink2x. Both the retrotink2x and the eon are linedoubling svideo to 480p with no difference in image quality.
The Hyperkin cable seems okay as a backup solution for one of the others, say if your capture equipment wasn’t compatible or you were taking the system to someone else’s setup. If they can tweak the brightness to be more accurate and maybe the colors, they’d have a really good bang-for-buck product.
I'm willing to bet that the Hyperkin might improve with a system that has the video op-amp mod. N64 video output brightens and clears up with the op-amp. It is adding something Nintendo were supposed to have done but didn't to cut corners.
I get what you're saying and you're definitely not wrong, but for some of us, we dont have a place to put a CRT TV. I had to downsize when I bought my new house and lost my mancave. Had a CRT at my old house and had my NES,SNES, and Sega Genesis hooked up to it. I had to figure out a way to hook up e everything to an LED TV in my bedroom so for now, went the cheap route with the Hyperkin cables for SNES and Sega, probably will plunk down the $99 for the RetroTink for the NES.
First thing I noticed was the title Nox right in center. It really is best thing on display that I can see. Never seen your shows before. You got my attention so far.

Thank you Metal Jesus for doing this video. It’s actually super super useful. The side by side comparisons, editing, and your final thoughts put everything into perspective. I actually own all of the items shown in this video except for the ultra HDMI mod, so your video helps me decide which to use to which to give to my friends/family. The RetroTink2 works perfectly for my RGB modded N64 w/ Retrovision Component cable (plus SNES). Also works with Sega Saturn w/ Retrovision Component. Looks great. The downside: cables plugged into the retrotink then more cables coming out of that. Cables on cables is a mess. The EON will replace the RetroTink2 when playing N64 since it doesn’t require any extra cables or power. The Hyperkin will either be a portable solution or given to friends/family. UltraHDMI..... someday I guess!
Only problem with ultrahdmi is that sometimes its too sharp being 1080p for the style of graphics without antialiasing where as 480p with smoothing helps hide the jaggies.
I just have a quick question. Does the Hyperkin cable improve the video quality from simply plugging composite into the HDTV? Is it more akin to S-Video quality?
S Video is still better than composite so I guess it's worth it as a cheap alternative. Without modding the system, its internal smoothing filters will continue to smudge the image to a certain extent regardless of the upscalers.
For me I think I will stick with my Retrotink 2X. lots of consoles in my collection and it is cheaper. EON did a good job but the N64 only natively supports S-video. there is only so much you can do with that signal.
Jesus love your content, but smoothing should never be on during a review, I will have to check another review as it’s the crispness of the ultra hdmi mod that impresses. Can’t tell how crisp the others are with smoothing on.

Lots of the best mods require soldering. I can solder, but I don't have the equipment for it. Soldering is actually pretty easy. You just have to be careful with it.
Dude! Thank you so much, I literally set up my N64 today after many years. Needless to say I was very disappointed with the image quality on my TV. This was an awesome way to kickstart my weekend 🤘
dude your videos are my must go place to check all this comparison tests
want ultra hdmi but ill have to wait because of the price.
i actually used your review of the gamecube eon cable, and man its incredible.
Keep with the great content!
The hyperkin darkness is just a matter of balancing the color, brightness on your TV you can see clearly that there's too much red on it when compared to the other solutions. If you remove some of the red and maybe add a little yellow I'm pretty sure it will make a huge difference and become more like the other ones.
I have the Hyperkin cable on my Sega Genesis and after a little picture tweaking, everything looks amazing on my plasma TV
@@kochaos6129 S-video is a clearer/less dirty signal compared to composite. Brightness isnt the only factor.
Indeed it does... iv done it myself.
A very reasonable price. I dont think the n64 is worth any more.
Why not the retrotink? You can use it for almost all systems.
Just got the hyperkin cable and it honestly surprised me.
@@C-4Bowling Are the colors dark? You know you can adjust that on the TV.
Honestly I'm getting the hyperkin just as a backup, I'm fine with AV, but if I go to a friend's house and he doesn't have a TV that has an AV port I can use the HDMI.
Ultra HDMI hands down winner.
Yeah but for the price not really worth it
Yeah not really worth the cost by the time you consider you have to solder it in at $165 when other plug and play options are readily available, I'm experienced in micro soldering but there is always a chance of fucking it up particularly the ribbon cable.
Definitely. It’s crystal clear in HDTV but 4K looks pixelated
So basically, the Eon isn't worth it with the Retrotink being up to 50 bucks cheaper and more versatile.
With the Eon, you just plug it in with an HDMI cable and you’re done. The retro tink needs one cord for its own power source, another cord for the N64, and one more cord for the HDMI. It’s a lot more messy in comparison. It’s probably not worth an extra $50, but I’d still prefer it for its simplicity.
deprofundis442 basically it's not worth it at all.
Keep it up.
Voultar mod $30 SNES RGB only HDMI adapter $29. I just got my N64 on the 65inch HDR 4k last night it was upscale and solid beautiful
Also, both thr Eon and the Mclass adapter are readily available even now 4 years later. The Ultra 64 mod, not so much.
For the hyperkin cable, I had to adjust the tint setting on my tv to get the colors to look right. Also If your tv is on game mode it makes it a little brighter.
You are seeing footage captured BEFORE hitting the HDTV through the Elgato Game Capture HD60...so it's definitely the cables and not a TV setting.
Oh yeah I know. Just saying you can fix the issues in your tv settings when it's hooked up to your tv.
UltraHDMI for the win. Great video.
RetroTink looks pretty good + no installation fee! (Which can start from $100 and more on eBay :/ )
@@Treychik Not if you have soldiering skills. Even if you don't have this skill, there are tons of "how to" videos out there that should help you out.
come on the ultraHDMI has a very high chance of fuckup
I'd prefer the RetroTink or the Hyperkin cable I don't care, adjust brightness or colors on the TV set itself whatever
I gotta say, the retro tink is the best option, you can use multiple consoles, plus you can rgb mod your n64 for relatively cheap then just buy the Retrovision hd snes cables, and most consoles natively output rgb, that gives you a great picture for cheap
I say the win is retro tink
Not if you live in another country. A simple HDMI cable is The Best overall solution.
I’ve done Tim worthingtons mod and voultar, both look spectacular, and as far as other countries, the retro tink does hdmi so I don’t see your point?
yep, and/or an OSSC
John Jones yes indeed, money for those are completely
You really do a great job in this video! Really clear to understand, side by side comparison and full screen comparison, and giving a good advice at the end.
I Think I will go for the RetroTink for it's versatility (can be used on different consoles), PAL compatibility, easy to install, and it's price (remember that you can use it on multiple consoles!).
The EON Super 64 is also an interesting option, but it's current version doesn't support PAL. The UltraHDMI is of course also interesting, but is a lot more expensive, requires some soldering skills and you have to mod your N64 to make it work.
Eon know how to rip people off. I wouldn’t pay 150
Why would somebody want smoothing turned on? It blurs the image.
Your timing couldn't have been more perfect! I was just wanting to weigh my options for doing exactly this.
Thanks Jesus
Seeing this makes me even more satisfied with my UltraHDMI!
RetroMoments 😂 sucker.
@@rietzhu Haha :D If youre interested in one. I know a guy who is selling!
@@RetroMoments Honestly I'm jealous, I really am starting to think that the price is justified if you enjoy playing the N64 enough. I don't have a N64 yet, been playing the N64 games thru an emulator on the Wii. While the games look great on my TV thru the emulator, some of them run like complete shit
@@crimsontide1980 Absolutely, it is. Oh I see. I've been emulating through the Wii as well so I understand xD I was always looking for solutions and was never happy with anything. Now with the UltraHDMI I can finally settle down and just enjoy the games. Keep looking on eBay, they pop up every now and then. Its worth it :)
RetroMoments hey mate I’d be interested in the Ultra HDMI Kit. It’s defiantly the way to go, looks super crisp!

This is a great video but
y'know
Exactly. Smoothing makes them all look like garbage
I was thinking the same.......I WANT SHARP PIXEL.... SO LET ME PUT SMOOTHING... Why and what was he thinking by doing that.
Did you guys not watch the whole video? He literally has an entire segment on Wave Race to show it off and on and even before that he mixes and matches having one on and the other off.
Great comparison! My standbys are the retrotink and the OSSC. Never did splurge for a framemeister...
Great... now I have the "Hard for Games" theme song stuck in my head! LOL :)
Framemeister isn't nearly as good as having both of those. Hopefully there will be a 1 stop shop combination of the 2 some day!
Superb video! I feel like the RetroTink will be the best bet for many people and works with many other systems.
No RGB mod with Deblur & XRGB Mini/OSSC?
=/
InvictvsNox i have a Rgb mod and ossc and it looks almost as good as the ultra hdmi
Got my RetroTINK-2X Pro + HD Retrovision Component Cable + RGB modded N64 all set-up. Your videos helped me decide and the end result is pretty impressive, thank you.
Ultra hdmi only choice here! But not worth the cost.
Easily worth the cost.... Cause it's the best video quality you can get.
You're out of your mind. It's worth it at twice the price.
@@Darxide23 lol smh guess he wants to live with S-Video.
This channel is really cool. Great content always. Congratulations from Brazil. Come to the BGS - Brazil game show someday.
Yep. Everything was captured straight off the Elgato Game Capture HD60 and then upscaled to 1080p via Final Cut Pro X for UA-cam.
He disables it in the last half of the video. I was thinking the same. lol
It looks like a muddy mess because without modding the N64 it is outputting only composite NOT RGB. Upscaling or line doubling composite still looks like ass.
@David Skriletz It is hard to find the time when you factor in my cocaine benders!
I run my SNES, n64, etc to my 65" 4k TV with scart cables. It's surprising how good it still looks even like this.
*Ultrahdmi* - 1 frame of lag because of the digital conversion
*Retrotink2x* - zero lag because it linedoubles svideo to 480p
*Eon* -zero lag for the same reason as the retrotink2x
*Hyperkin* - some input lag because its upscaling to 720p.
11:13 *_NEW LAP RECORD!_* lol love that intense voice
For the money, the RetroTINK is the best value (since, remember, it can be used on multiple consoles). The other 3 options only work on the N64. The UltraHDMI does, undoubtedly, offer the best N64 output, but I think the RetroTINK is the most versatile.
The hyperkin cable can also be used with the snes and gamecube but i wouldnt recommend it over the other options
Yesss! I've been waiting for this ever since you tweeted it!
Honestly, it would've been better if smoothing was off on the EON and RetroTINK when directly compared to the Ultra HDMI
Remember, upscalers require video buffers, which always adds some input lag, where as line doubling does not add any lag. RetroTink is a line doubler.
So is the eon adapter. Not defending that price tho just saying its a linedoubler as well
@@ians_parks Yeah though I think realistically if you had the option and could only pick one, I like to imagine most would choose the Retrotink to save some money.
Probably because if people had the mod they wouldn't be using the other solutions. Those are for people that want a plug n play solution.
Great video MJR \m/
~Shade
Really need smoothing off to compare them to Ultra HDMI which is outputting raw pixels.
riiiiight? Seems pretty obvious....
The only one that really isnt worth its price is the Eon adapter
RGB over SCART mod to OSSC is the best imo.
The colors just really pop with that RGB signal and the OSSC does all the work of making the games look HD.
If you set the control scheme in Goldeneye to 1.2 (Solitaire) put your left hand on the D-pad and right hand on the analog stick, it feels nearly identical to the modern standard.
Great tip! This is exactly what I do. You can also play with 2 controllers, but I’ve never bothered with that.

OPTION #1 - Super 64 = $150+
or
OPTION #2 - N64 Svideo cable = $5 + RetroTINK-2x = $99
#2 Saves you $46 + gives you the option to line double perfect RGB signals from many other classic systems when using YUV HD Retrovision cables.

"Not to flex but that Ultra HDMI is bangin" - basically this whole video
It looks awful on some games though. You need to want to see the pixels that were purposely designed to be seen blur to get the intended effects.
If I hadn’t already paid £230 to get the UltraHDMI mod added to my N64, I’d go for the Eon, as it’s by far the simplest solution... no cables required except the HDMI cable you want to use with your TV.
Does anyone have ANY idea when more UltraHDMI chips are being made?
They probably aren’t being made anymore, that’s why N64 digital pre orders went out of stock so fast. Try and wait for Dan and his team to restock the digital, it’s going to have dual RGB and HDMI output.
Great video! Ordered a RetroTINK last week and it should be here tomorrow. Excited!
Uhdmi looks great but between the other 3 I'd save the money and buy the cheap cable.. color accuracy is not so important to me.
Also color palate can be changed on the tv. I watched another video on that cable and it was too light on it lol. Alot depends on tv's and their settings. If your a purist, get the ultrahdmi, if you just want to connect an N64 to a modern tv, Hyperkin
Thanks for putting the work in MetalJesus.
I bought a retrotink (and a spare) and I am very happy. I use it on my Saturn as well.... Funny that I turn smoothing off on my Saturn most of the time, but on my N64 I keep it turned on. :)
For N64 I run the svideo through Tink and into the OSSC with scanlines activated. Looks incredible and can't notice any lag!
Important to note: like MJR said the RetroTink 2x also outputs component which will look better than than the s-vid output showed in this video. Also the quality of the cables are VERY important when trying to get good picture quality (regardless of which type of output u go with)

Great video. I was on the fence about the hyperkin. I think it'd be worth it to save up for a better option now.
But I think better play in original resolution with good crt tv!) What do you think, Bro!)
Yaroslav Antipov Yeah there is nothing like playing n64 on a crt. So glad I have a 13 inch crt.
Even better on a crt with an hdmi port and an Mcable
CRT with s-video is how I currently play. Not sure I need anything more really. I'd probably be fine with composite on an ok CRT, even. It's a pretty ugly system and making it crystal clear sometimes just reveals the jankieness rather than looking great.
if you can FIND a good crt tv
Hey what kind of TV are you using with UltraHDMI? On my Samsung 4K TV it looks pixelated really bad. I thought something was wrong but they I tried it on Vizio 1080p HD tv and it looks awesome

With the RetroTink you get the results of the EON adapter and you can use it with all the consoles. In conclusion if you're not gonna get a hdmi mod buy a RetroTINK.
You did an amazing job with all the comparisons bro, my respects to you for taking the time!🙏🏻
The EON is hands down the best in my opinion.
I like the N64 on my CRT TV I don't want it on an HDMI....
You got my attention so far.
well old good CRT still right for me if we are talking about consoles which was made to play on CRT
What is that game at 0:26?
UltraHDMI looks excellent, however due to the price I’d be more inclined to go down the RetroTINK route. Excellent review man, your video helped me a lot.
I'm always looking for some good music to listen to, my Spotify playlist has over 1,000 songs, I noticed your Cruachan shirt and hadn't heard of them, so I looked them up and now my playlist is going to have a couple more songs, rock on
one of the criterias: Can my console survive a fall on the floor before I blame the 3rd party accessory?
Especially in the Wave Race 64 footage...looks weird.
I just have a quick question. Does the Hyperkin cable improve the video quality from simply plugging composite into the HDTV? Is it more akin to S-Video quality?
It’s just S video with an extra smooth filter switch. It can’t magically do RGB.
None of these can do the RGB it’s just S Video ir composite.
I think hyperkin looks pretty ok while the other two looks more blurry and green in color? The ultra hdmi looks awesome!
Jesus love your content, but smoothing should never be on during a review, I will have to check another review as it’s the crispness of the ultra hdmi mod that impresses. Can’t tell how crisp the others are with smoothing on.
Im sure its just his preference but yeah for review purposes it shouldve been off by default
Please, more videos like this. That's a big reason I have trouble going back to play some of my collection.
UltraHDMI got me chubbin!
