same thing can be said for ultimate tho... a few characters have the same stuff but theres more characters with some gimmick thing in ultimate than there is characters in the entirety of brawl
In melee i play all the characters for fun, but when brawl came out i was already living off tournaments and going into/attending college so i only put effort into the two characters i used, ddd and metaknight. An iron man would probably be 1 sided simply because i never tried most characters for long, as i saw no point to it. MK wasn't the only character that could beat ICs. Characters like ZSS, Peach and Toon Link had roughly the same advantage over them, while there are characters like Marth and apparently even Ike and Wolf who are said to go even (don't ask on the latter). Also, Snake. I agree with just about everything else you said. Matchups weren't really boring beyond that. They weren't necessarily aggressive, but they also didn't have to be incredibly campy. I've seen a ton of cool matchups against Top tiers even today, and they weren't nearly as dominant as some people think.
Yeah but the mk problem was that in the hands of a good player he had better everything he was the only character that didn't need some jank or chain grab and was just broken in his kit overall he just did everything better But yeah icies were more toxic
Additionally, Ike had a decent or winning matchup against every character in the game, except for Meta Knight who he loses hard to. So if Ice Climbers had been banned and there were less MKs there would have been way more Ike players and he'd be way higher on the tierlist.
I’ve been replaying brawl recently. So much nostalgia, meta knight and zero suit are even more fun than I remembered. Thanks a lot for this series, I learned a lot
Brawl Meta Knight is my favorite character in the series. It's like he was designed to be fun to play. It's a shame that half of the top tiers had significantly worse design. Looking at you, Ice Climbers...
he's fun to play because he's so ridiculously good at almost everything, and he's not as hard to play as most other top tiers. playing against him wasnt fun in the slightest unless youre playing mk aswell
Meta Knight is so broken in Brawl that it is fun, also, it's ridiculous that he has 4 recovery options. Brawl's Meta Knight is Sakurai's revenge after the nerf of Kirby in Melee, so he wanted to make a Kirby character the best again.
Watching these videos has really increased my appreciation of Brawl; most characters have lots of cool character specific tech. I think what ruins the game for me, though, is how bad the worst characters are, and how joyless some of the top tiers make gameplay. Seriously, Ice Climbers, Diddy Kong, and Olimar ruin competitive Brawl. While Meta Knight was oppressive, he doesn't ruin the fun like those other top tiers.
Brawl Marth has thus far remained my favorite character in the entire series. He's so much fun to play - even just moving around as him felt great. I love how he was rewarded for proper spacing, and I love how he his sword wasn't quite as absurdly long as it was in Melee, but also not as awkwardly stubby and short as it is in Ultimate. Foxtrotting around with him was so fun (at least until you tripped), and I wish more of his Brawl play style was kept intact in the later Smash games.
Ive openly stated my opinions since 2008 to present consistently, that most of the viable characters in this game besides mk have a boring gameplan. Example - I'm also a top ddd/falco/ike in brawl, but i found fishing for chain grabs (sideB/ftilt/bair/grabs for ddd and cg and camping for falco, basic sword spacing and jabs for ike) to get repetitive and boring to me. Brawl Marth i disliked (i actually only like marth in melee, and switching between both marths was negatively affecting my melee marth too much [such as tipper spacing on the moves] so i dropped the brawl marth quickly), and if you watch me in Ultimate or other games you'll know i dont enjoy projectile/item-based characters. Mk was the only character in brawl i truly loved, and there's inaccurate judgments/stigmas about the game as a whole i wanted to clear up as well.

@@TheRealMew2king I agree but I have to say I think it's mk. Mainly because of how much he shaped the meta. I do think Ics and snake did somewhat but I feel like if you had a winning matchup against him then you were high tier pretty much. It's insane that ics can take your stock off of one grab but I feel like there was counterplay. Same with mk but it was insanely difficult. Also jcs recovery is questionable as opposed to meta knights 4 recovery moves, glide, and multiple jumps.
Super insightful! I don't enjoy Brawl that much, but that's mostly because I only play characters I like and I mained Squirtle in Brawl. Life got better for me once Greninja was introduced. BUT! I learned a lot and Brawl _is_ fun to watch when it's between experienced players that aren't playing Iceys or Olimar
M2K should do a tier list of every character in the series ever. Please like this so M2K sees this because this sounds really exiting to see who he puts where
The Pikmin budding is a purely aesthetic change. It goes from bud to flower after the initial leaf, with each evolution happening after 20 seconds. So basically after 40 seconds they'll flower, but it does NOT make them stronger or any different.
One important thing to mention is that Pikachu's placement is significantly affected by the fact that he has the only even (or perhaps even a bit favored) matchup with Metaknight. A single matchup makes him that good, and that's how good Metaknight is.
I played this as a kid so I didn’t really know the best players, but I always had MK as my favorite. When I wasn’t using him tho I was using Kirby and Pit
the top tiers are definitely the lamest part of Brawl ._. Olimar is boring af, Diddy has 2 banana cancer, Snake is good at everything for no reason, ICs is the most one trick character in smash history, and Meta Knight is Meta Knight.
Mk was super fun and deep to me, every move besides jab and upsmash had a purpose, and it was easy to show skill gaps between players in the game (for me i really liked that part.. low input delay helped a lot imo), but yea the other characters often had boring gameplans by comparison imo.
This is why we shouldn't be so apposed to ruleset changes like ledge grab limits. Brawl sounded like it would've been extremely fun competitively if the rulesets were changed more early on. Chain grabs and tripping tho... Not much we could do about :/
The rules were mostly implimented during the year 2009 iirc, tripping rarely ever changed the outcome of the game (unless you trip into an ics chain grab, which happened to me once), and chain grabbing yea that part was bleh imo
Ok, it’s fine to say that the gap between MK and the other top tiers was very low, but when that only becomes the case after a rule is implemented to directly nerf him and the stage list is changed to buff the second best character, he was probably pretty far ahead beforehand
While his stall tactics such as his ledge stall uair and his infinite cape glitch were pretty broken, a lot of that emerged since the only viable option against the other top tiers such as ICs and Diddy was to take the lead and not engage, or risk being excessively punished for thinking about approaching.
Mew2King what about Fox. He was A tier in 64, Best in Melee, Kind if Top/High Tier in Brawl, Top Tier in 4, and and Top Tier in Ultimate. Pikachu is, Best in 64, High Tier in Melee, Top/High Tier in Brawl, Top Tier in 4, and Top Tier(Best 5) in Ultimate. It is honestly very close.
Their design is fundamentally oriented towards being good characters in high level play. They are both fast and have good frame data. Pika struggles more to kill but has had an incredible combo game throughout the series. It’s honestly really hard to tell who is better on average throughout the series.
I miss when Falco actually worked as a character design wise. I think Ultimate Falco is a bit underrated still, but he had so much fun tech in brawl, however in 4 and Ulti he has turned into Up Tilt -> Back Air or Nair the character. Bc that’s all he can do.
It's kinda interesting looking back and thinking what would've happened if Meta Knight and IC's had been banned very early on in Brawl's lifespan. I tend to think it would've improved the competitive experience, but it's impossible to say for sure.
I would've lowkey expected ICs to be first for one moment, given how dominant they started being towards the end. They really push your buttons. In all my time playing Brawl, I never once met an MK player that made me feel he was "unfair", or that I couldn't do anything...and I mained Bowser, and even played characters like DDD against him. And I played a couple of people. I went to the point I would try to TEACH people how to play against Bowser, that way I'd have more fun. At the same time, I can't say I played against an ICs that knew the chaingrab against every character. To me, it seems a lot more easier to just grab people in this game than in any other, considering how little shieldstun moves have. You'd need a really good MK to kill you off of multiple reads, on the other hand. ICs just needs one.
lol, easy win then. I can chaingrab consistently with falco and DDD. Im already a pro player at brawl. Where my next tourney at? God, this game was a mess...
I can't be the only one that thought the way they summed up Snake kind of sounded like a description of Melee Fox lol Just add a one frame move that's the answer for nearly every situation and you're good to go lol
When the majority of the remaining top tiers relied on camping, stalling, or chain grab infinites & MK is one of the only characters who didn't get obsoleted by them, it makes perfect sense why everyone went MK.
33:34 I've never played high level at any video game, but what is bad or toxic about this scenario? Why would you not study your opponents if you want to beat them? That's what they do in regular sports.
@@sora4440 eh idk, there's no special quality of melee that made it inherently better than brawl, it just came first and became beloved and as a result became what many expected from a new smash game. Brawl isn't a bad game, it just isn't melee
@@npclucario7005 , there is though. Alot of Brawl's design was anti competition. Not even for the sake of casual play. But for the sake of not being as competitive as Melee was too competitive and Sakurai did not like that. Tripping, Buffed shields, new air dodge mechanics, infinite air dodges, removal of L canceling, fewer movement options, etc... Smash 64 has more tech skill than Brawl and overall is more polished when it comes to fighting. Ppl definitely would have gone back. Same way ppl pretty much have shoved MVC Infinite to the side to go to back MVC 2...
Well I dont think so. Mk and icies would still be broken and the problems would still be there. I really don't think melee changed much about peoples options except for singleplayer
The chain grab really wasn’t that hard at all with falco. In fact, there is a video of Jontron just randomly entering an event and being told how to do it and then doing it in tourney
This is game so much harder to play than it seems, it looks slow and boring, but demands some stuff/tech Ultimate doesn't. Also, since shield is so good, you had to create different/creative openings or at least be very careful with what you were doing. Not hating Ultimate, great game too, but I miss the tension behind throwing any move there was in Brawl.

Every time I watch a brawl video, I think to myself... how drunk were the people making the game XD
M2K should do a tier list of every character in the series ever. Please like this so M2K sees this because this sounds really exiting to see who he puts where
Ayyyyy it’s back
I was freaking out when the vids were gone
Can you guys make a video showing off cool brawl tech? I actually enjoyed that as much as anything
1st 3 characters covered: have chain grabs
I'm starting to see a pattern here
Do you think olimar would be one spot above if tether recoveries were fixed in brawl?
Prob. And ics would become by far the best character
@@TheRealMew2king what a disgusting possible outcome lmao
@@TheRealMew2king that would be the worst timeline. Ivysaur died for the outcome we got. He was the martyr we needed.
the whole section about ice climbers was really depressing, i would ask where it all went wrong but i guess i know now, what a sad way to die
Why is ZSS just annoying in like every game.
XSDE3X in melee, she was just a trophy. So she wasn’t annoying in that game
No lie I bet when Sakuria lost movement in his right arm he gave directions for her frame data using the fingers on one hand
it's not really annoying, she has just been a top tier in every game. Though in brawl I could see why she was annoying
I love this game. Dedede chain grab is fun to pull out against inexperienced players and my Ness is like unbeatable by my friends
I played Lucas in brawl because he was fun and his up smash killed really early
PK Love for life
The Pikmin budding is a purely aesthetic change. It goes from bud to flower after the initial leaf, with each evolution happening after 20 seconds. So basically after 40 seconds they'll flower, but it does NOT make them stronger or any different.
Oh damn really? I mean either way the pikmin farming thing.
I miss Brawl/4 Falco :(
At least he had a kit and was more than up tilt the character
I miss Brawl Lucario and Brawl Ganon side b too
It's interesting to hear that Brawl Meta Knight is considered fun while Smash 4 Bayonetta is considered lame
Btw lonely popo can still chain grab. Which makes Icies even more op.
This makes me more thankful for smash among this covid
One important thing to mention is that Pikachu's placement is significantly affected by the fact that he has the only even (or perhaps even a bit favored) matchup with Metaknight. A single matchup makes him that good, and that's how good Metaknight is.
ESAM believed that Meta Knight still won the matchup, and that’s pretty important.
Brawl tech w Ultimate mechanics (obviously there is conflict between the two) would be the perfect smash game not called melee
Miles Long Where’s the Sm4sh appreciation?
Skeeter Mania Worst game in the series 1000%
Miles Long Your opinion, m8.
15:24 lmfao gunblade in the back
You guys should do an old PM tier list and then compare to P+
I would be down to see a brawl netplay tournament
The amount of knowledge between Salem and Mew2king on Melee-Ultimate is actually insane. They could really make a bible for every character
People love Brawl. I know I do. I think it shows in how many more views these videos are getting than average. Please make more Brawl content!
Eh. I like brawl as a casual game. I despise it entirely as competitive
30:58 i remember when ult first came out and cheese came to aon to play some ult, dude is funny, lol
super good videos, more brawl stuff in the future would be really fun
I played this as a kid so I didn’t really know the best players, but I always had MK as my favorite. When I wasn’t using him tho I was using Kirby and Pit
Smash 64 Falcon was dope. Wish they'd bring back falcon punch as a recovery move.
RIP fast falcon punch
RIP True Combos into Falcon Punch
Yes my brothers
Esam without a beard is the scariest thing
3:31 YOOO!! Anti looking fresh. LOL
Great content, guys.
I'd like more Brawl videos. A MK guide, or simply some friendly matches.
Can someone make a brawl netplay tourney? This game is so technical and funny and I don't want it to die again.
brawl marth was absolutely art
the top tiers are definitely the lamest part of Brawl ._.
So basically MK was Toxic on the surface, while IC's were Toxic below it.
Why has Pikachu been good in literally every smash game? GET THIS RAT OUTTA HERE
Prob the best char in the series on average.
Pikachu and Fox are just good on a fundamental level, I guess
Their design is fundamentally oriented towards being good characters in high level play. They are both fast and have good frame data. Pika struggles more to kill but has had an incredible combo game throughout the series. It’s honestly really hard to tell who is better on average throughout the series.
Luke Engstrom Don’t forget edgeguarding!
Brawl Metaknight is my favorite character of all time too M2k!
3:00 Marth is a character.
Nice video :D
ZSS has been top 10 3 games in a row...FeelsPrivilegedMan.
Smash 4 ZSS > Brawl ZSS/Ultimate ZSS
@@5C0RP_ Big disagree.
36:29 turn on subtitles mew2king said metaknight was overweight subtitles are weird
We have a ssbm, ssbb and ssbu tier list
were missing ssb and ssb4 tier lists
i love when its called ssb and not smash 64, idk why its just funny to me
@@shady8045 lmao
I miss when Falco actually worked as a character design wise. I think Ultimate Falco is a bit underrated still, but he had so much fun tech in brawl, however in 4 and Ulti he has turned into Up Tilt -> Back Air or Nair the character. Bc that’s all he can do.
Music?
Announcer:And the best brawl character is ganondorf
M2K Salem and any brawl player:impossible
so basically to be good in this game you have to chain grab
There's more to it than that, but for certain characters, this is in fact a huge factor for them.
Such as IC's.
lol, easy win then. I can chaingrab consistently with falco and DDD. Im already a pro player at brawl. Where my next tourney at?
God, this game was a mess...
I can't be the only one that thought the way they summed up Snake kind of sounded like a description of Melee Fox lol
Just add a one frame move that's the answer for nearly every situation and you're good to go lol
You should do more content like this.
What would you say are the top 5 or 10 characters for Brawl 1 stock?
However fun MK dittos were to play, watching tournaments where they were 50% of the matches made me want to drink antifreeze.
Rest was cut out cuz editors decided it was off-topic :/
@@TheRealMew2king that feeling when you get censored by your own editors
I love how excited Salem gets about Brawl. He understands that it’s the best game in the series.
*Several people are typing*
"understands"
Jack Cliffon WHAT
I never realized that icies is a fun killer
Imagine a world where brawl came out before melee, I bet it would be as popular and as beloved as melee
I bet it wouldn't. Ppl would have left brawl and went back to n64...
Is there a buffer system in this game? I casually played the first 3 games so I’m not sure.
“Might as well hit with his mittens” lololololol
I appreciate the time stamps
Wait, flower Pikmin in Brawl were stronger than regular Pikmin? I coulda sworn that was just a visual thing.
Lol fox ultimate thing his throws don't kill, well just like falco's ultimate throws
