ROR: Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) (Sega Genesis Vs. GBA)

- You wanted it, you've got it. It's Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis for the Game Boy Advance, otherwise known as the worst remake/port of all time. I've gotten so many requests for this game it's not even funny. Try to enjoy the video, because there's no way in hell to enjoy the game itself.

Remake or Rebreak Scores:
1- Rebreak: Fails to resurrect the same quality standard as its original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc.
2- Re-Meh: Not quite as good as the original, but a relatively competent recreation that is still very playable. Fails to add any new content or fix problems of the original.
3- Remake: Superior to the original, but not necessarily worth it if you already own the original. May add some new content or fix some problems of the original.
4- Replace: So much better than the original, that there's no reason for new players to own the original. Not only a faithful recreation of the original, but fixes old bugs and adds new content.
I remember playing this as a kid..the only way to speed up the gameplay is to turn off all sound effects and sound, but even then screen is too zoomed in

Hey a Nathaniel comment that 5 people replied to. Neat.
I'm not going to lie, this is how I was first introduced to Sonic 1 and probably to the Sonic series as a whole.
Considering all the problems you mentioned, I have no idea how I found it perfectly okay.
It doesn't help that I actually remember playing through this game back then, and it took me nearly 2 months to beat Labyrinth Zone.
ExpitheCat because you'd never seen how it is so much better.
Sonic 06 was my first Sonic game...
I also got introduced to sonic from the gba version I still have that cartdridge
Yoshi Washere your profile pic matches your comment.
ExpitheCat SEGA portable gamer introduced me to sonic
They did great with Sonic Advance 1, 2, 3, why not the same with Genesis?
Its like 'Sonic the Hedgehog without the Blast Processing...'
Funny thing is, for this game, the development team simply ported the Sonic Advance engine to it. Thing is, that engine was not meant for the original's sprites and stuff, hence the slowdown.
-_-
It was just done lazily.
I mean for example "Rayman Advance" was a GBA port of the original Rayman, and even though it also suffered from having large sprites and screen crunching the physics, framerate and everything else worked just as well as they did in the original.
And that was a launch title and it was a port of a PlayStation game.
You´d think it would be easier to make a port of a Sega Genesis title.
ArmaBiologica35
Yah. But the Game Boy Advance didn't have Blast Processing. ... ... ...
Joke aside. The Game Boy Advance's programming is totally different from the SEGA Genesis. They may have changed the Resolution and a few things, but they didn't edit the programming and format of Sonic 1 for the Game Boy Advance.
Sonic Advance 1, 2, 3, Rush, and Rush Adventure were all made by Dimps, not Sonic Team. Sonic Team only made Sonic Genesis and Sonic 2006 and both failed miserably. The only good Sonic game that Sonic Team ever made afterwards is Sonic Generations which like Sonic Genesis is a remake title as it is a game with remake levels.
+ArmaBiologica35 It's obvious they rush the game out just so to not miss Sonic's 15th birthday. If anything they could had just port it to the Nintendo DS with five extra games(which later they did).
Everytime a UA-camr goes to college, they never come back.
well do i have news for you
in sonic team:
WHAT THE FFFUCK IS A GBA?!
WE DON'T KNOW WHAT A SONIC IS AND THEY EXPECT US TO MAKE A SONIC ON A GBA?!
Dimps: Need some help, guys?
Sonic Team: *STFU!* We are the motherfrickin’ pros. All of our games are great af and instant classics. This game won’t be a bombshell like Shadow the Hedgehog, and neither will Sonic ‘06!
Sonic advance anybody?
The slowdowns in GBA makes Sonic 2006 look great.😂
Joke is, someone actually did a rom hack to Sonic Genesis, and it was so high quality, I couldn't believe my eyes.
it wasn't an ROM hack,it was made from the ground up.
@@luisjogos821Forza flashbacks?
Well the rom hack to this Sonic GBA GENESIS is a very interesting one.
Its about f*cking time you gave a game a rebreak.
+Kiddy Kong Honestly, it made me think rebreaks were bad ports of already bad games. At least I know the difference now?
+People actually look at this? Well I feel Sonic 1 wasn't very good to begin with. It;s lacking in aspects like variety that are in the sequels.
tim5fl It is nowhere near the best, but it's not bad enough to be considered bad from the start. It had tolerable gameplay, at least...
+Deadman I don't think it's bad. Just okay.
Kevin Synan I have Sonic Forces stages on my channel.
The music is insulting to the GBA! I’ve always believed that a good composer determines the quality of a sound chip and not the chip itself. There was EXCELLENT music on the GBA, such as Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, the Sonic Advance trilogy, the Metroid games among many others! In fact, some Sonic 1 music was in Sonic Advance, which sounds great, especially for the hardware! What on earth happened here?
Radicola - Now that you mention it, it does sound like it. If that’s the case, they picked a very subpar set of sounds to use.
@Radicola ! also there is no soundchip. The CPU makes the sound
even the SMA series doesn't have that bad music
@@g-forcefgt323 - I think I remember hearing that somewhere. It certainly does limit the complexity, but it can be done well.
Even if the MIDI Music was the only option, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe showed that you can do great with compressed music.
Before this was made, it's gonna be a rebreak!
bigbangbot if i had a time machine, and tried to sabatoge the game...They would still release it!
the blue yoshi and the game would be better.
Who thought it was a good idea to put it on the gba. The ds was out at the time.

@@PeruvianPotato factually incorrect
The Sound Card Is No Fucking Excuse For Bad Sound Quality On The GBA. Metroid Fusion Sounds Fantastic On It.
I'm not saying it's an excuse. I'm saying that it would be near impossible to recreate authentic Genesis sound on a GBA; it would've sounded different no matter what. Even given that, Sonic Genesis still sounds terrible.
I Understand That. I'm Just Saying.
+Elliott Domokos I agree. They could of used the same sound quality that Sonic Advance Series have.
+ExoParadigmGamer One of the two guys responsible for the mobile ports of Sonic 1 and 2 made a proof-of-concept demo port of Sonic 1 back in 2007 that aimed to properly recreate the game on the GBA because he was irritated at how bad Sega screwed it up. Other than the change in audio fidelity, possibly because of the 144p recording, the demo sounds pretty authentic compared to the original Genesis version. Here's the video from his channel showing some gameplay: ua-cam.com/video/bFwxF-7vSrQ/v-deo.html

I still cant believe this was the first Sonic game i ever played. After my GBA died out in 2008,i was glad to throw this game in the trash. Then through emulation i played the Genesis version in 2010(for the first time),and i was shocked.
About the music, yes its utter bullshit, and after extracting it to Impulse Tracker format, and messing around with GM.DLS (The MIDI soundfont),ive noticed that literally every instrument in Sonic GBA is from the General MIDI soundfont that comes with Windows.
That is the saddest part of this. For some people, this was their only Sonic game.
@@emilyapricot1313yep. Sonic GENESIS GBA reminds me a lot to Flatout 3 due to how bad the game is.
you know SHIT about Sonic 1's worst version, you all were spared from it, i used to have a Panasonic Cell phone, the one with the clamp shell desing and low and behold, it came with Sonic the Hedgehog, you think the GBA version is bad?, try playing it at 2 frames per second, with a cell phone keyboard and the worst sound chip posible, every time you jumped or killed an enemy the BGM would mute to play the SFX, yet it was all i had back then... AND I BEAT IT!
never heard of it
I beat Sonic on Gamegear and N-gage.
Was the game's name Pana-Sonic?
when i was a kid i didnt had consoles, my uncle had that game on his phone, and everytime i visited him iplayed that, maybe it was shit, but it was my shit and i loved it

basically
sonic genesis did 9/11
XD
>not MSXGrafx 666
More like Sonic Genesis caused 9/11
from what I hear, they put the old Genesis software through the Sonic Advanced engine and patched up what didn't work.
They spent as little time on this as they could to get it out the door, mayhap if they didn't rush 06 out the door for the holiday release they could have made 2 decent games
but you know...
Sega with their firsts of stone gripping Sonic Team by the nads and all...
Sonic Genesis GBA was unfortunately the start of the downfall of Sonic game franchise.
9:05 - 9:21 I still find it odd how they were able to screw up the remixes in Sonic Genesis yet they were able to do good remixes for Star Light Zone, Scrap Brain Zone and the Boss theme in Sonic Advance and keep in mind that game came out in 2002, those tracks were pretty much small extras, and if from what I've heard was right Sonic Genesis was running on the same engine Advance 1 used. "Strange isn't it?"
YERRRRGHHH
*strange

The remix in Green Hill Zone Sonic Genesis GBA was awful however.
I never knew about the Earthworm Jim GBA remakes, or how good/bad they were.

When i played the remake
GBA: Remake or BREAK IT
Sega had a lot of nerve to make 2 awful sonic games both called Sonic the Hedgehog and release them on the same day
Sure did
I could understand a company deciding to release a remake on GBA in 2006 since it's probably cheaper for both the company and consumer. Also the fact that the DS came with backwards compatibility with GBA anyway, so it's not like a lot is that in that regard, but it's too bad the game turned out the way it did.
+electricmastro But it IS awkward when you consider that Sonic Rush the first Sonic game on the DS had been out for a year.
tim5fl
I suppose Sega wanted to make extra sure that this version of Sonic 1 was bad.
electricmastro True
+electricmastro sonic collection on DS contain sonic 1-2-3&K in, doesn't it?

Yup. That was when Sega phased out of their "wanting to be hated by everyone" phase.

REBREAK
Memories of this game: I bought it when it first came out. I was so outraged that Sega/Sonic Team allowed such a DISGRACE of a port that I went on eBay & bought Sonic Jam for the Saturn & returned this game to the store that I bought it from.
You know, out of curiosity, I purchased this dang ol' game and I was not disappointed

"Welcome back gentle and laidiesmen"
Ah the nostalgia from a half-decade ago hits us like a truck!
I still remember the review Spax3 did of this game. I'm still kinda baffled why Sega never released it on the DS at the time, since there's enough room for the game, rather than the GBA.
Genesis: 30 FPS
GBA: 15(10 underwater)
Gameplay 2-3x slower.
The original ran at 60
Genesis was 50-60 FPS
More accurate...
Genesis- 50(PAL)/60(NTSC).
+ slowdown (40).
GBA - 15-60, without
slowdown compensation.
The GBA version just has a much, much more inconsistent frame rate.
I've never heard the word pestiferous before.

'Sonic 1 Mode.' with remade levels in the Advance engine.
As someone who has memorized the entirety of Labyrinth Zone, and enjoys it a lot, not even I'm willing to try it on the GBA.
That means you have to do Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 ROR lol
That means he has to do Comix Zone RoR
I don't see how others argue the GBA Mario and DKC remakes had bad screen crunching. I never saw them as a huge problem and at some point, never noticed them. I guess people are too picky.
Goodness Sonic Genesis is bad. I can defend some parts of games like Sonic 06, but damn this game will never get the same treatment. As someone who really loves the Spring Yard Zone theme, it hurt listening to the GBA version.
Great review and I look forward to the other Sonic reviews you have planned. If only I can figure out who the person joining you is.

The gba didn't have enough blast processing.
It had, Sonic Team just sucks at making a port. Sonic Advance 1, 2, & 3 already proves how Sonic games would be perfected on GBA.
+Voan Siam they could have made it in the sonic advance engine.
The funny thing is, they actually *did* remake the game using the Sonic Advance engine. It's why the game ended up having so many problems. I'm not saying that the Sonic Advance engine was bad or inferior to the Genesis engine, not at all, but it was designed for the Sonic Advance graphics and physics in mind, so when Sonic Team tried porting Sonic 1 to the GBA using said engine, it obviously created a *lot* of problems. And given that they ignored Quality Assurance for Sonic 06, which was Sonic Team's main focus at the time, you can imagine they *just* didn't give a shit with Sonic Genesis.
Well Genesis does what Nintendon't u know what i'm saying.
You've always made great videos. I think you should review Sonic 4 episode 1 and 2 and make them a part of this and maybe Knuckles Chaotix. Or maybe the gamegear games like Sonic 1, 2, Chaos, Triple Trouble, and Blast, not 3D Blast, Blast. These are the best Sonic reviews I've seen on youtube.
Keep making great videos and I will keep liking ;)
2006 really was Sonic's darkest hour. Even the GBA wasn't spared.
Sonic riders: am I a joke to you
The irony: Sonic '06 & Genesis were meant to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Sonic, instead they almost marked the death knell for the little blue hedgehog.
Especially SG.
The ironic thing Is that One fan on the internet managed to singlehandedly fix the game.
I mean it's completely normal, it's the Sonic modding comunity we're talkingg about
The GBA version of Sonic 1 is horrible. It has slow-downs, glitches, bugs, bad frame rate, screen crunches and ruined music and ruined sounds. Want a good version of Sonic 1? Then get the game on compilations such as the Sega Smash Pack series, Sonic Jam (Sega Saturn version), Sonic Mega Collection/Sonic Mega Collection Plus and so on and also play the iOS/Android version.
Or The original game
I've got a game for Remake or Rebreak: Megaman and Bass (Originally an SNES game, was ported to GBA)
This game was hard enough, and they HAD to add the freaking screen crunch.
and plus, mm&bass snes is japan exclusive
The gba version had a much better soundtrack

Ya had one job, Sonic Team. *ONE JOB!!*

Man, I'm glad I got Sonic Advance instead of this as a kid
Sonic uses two frames in his death sequence in this GBA port while in the other ports he only has the one. The latter frame is normally used when he drowns.

8:45 Listen to the soundtrack of Mother 3 and you will hear that the GBA does have quite amazing potential. Yes, it wouldn’t be possible to implement the music without remixing it but they should‘ve at least tried to do so. Speaking of Mother I heard that they ironically butchered Mother 2 on the GBA.

You can't spell Incompetent without Sega
In fact this 2006 GBA remake came after the Sonic Advance trilogy, which the latter three were actually good.
Which is part of why it is inexcusable for Sonic Genesis to suck this horribly.
Actually, there are even some graphical flaws. Sometimes, the sprites will move a pixel or two up and to the right from where it should be (look at the looking up and crouching animations). Also, sometimes the backgrounds don't work, like in Scrap Brain where they don't even try, and sometimes the camera doesn't even block off what you aren't supposed to see (the void under the levels).
"Pestiferous", eh?
I learned a word today.
Great vid, keep up the awesome!
Ngl, I respect that you quit the game. Too many people are like "You can't say it's bad until you complete it", but I feel like even if it's better at that point, games shouldn't take forever to get to "the good part", which may not even be there in a case like this.
He got to the end of Labyrinth Zone, the fourth zone out of six, which is about 2/3 of the way through the game. If over half the game is bad to play, I think it's fair to say the whole game is more bad than good.

@ExoParadigmGamer If you wanna know some technical information about Sonic Genesis (GBA), it's running this game in the Sonic Advance engine. This is why slowdown and frame rate stuttering is common. They have two different graphics, so they put the Sonic 1 sprites and assets with Sonic Advance coding. There's proof of concept for Sonic 1 running on the GBA just like the SEGA Genesis version. A guy going by Taxman and Stealth proved that.
I still have a GBA SP. I was looking for Sonic games for the GBA. I'm so glad that I watched this video and saw reviews for Sonic Genesis for GBA before deciding which Sonic one port to buy. I'm so glad I avoided wasting about at least $15 on this piece of junk. I'm so glad got the Android version for my Fire Tablet instead. Not only I would've wasted at least $13, but if dodging enemies and stage hazards at high speeds and crawling through Labyrinth Zone is already frustrating enough in the Android version (and the original Sega Genesis version), then I can't imagine how I would feel if I played these same levels on the GBA port.
James Rolfe? As in the Angry Video Game Nerd? Sir, you have good taste indeed.

Free riders was the one where they were on the boards it isn't that bad and was pretty fun
I'm glad you spoke about the graphics since nobody else on the planet has done that before and I don't think that the music is that bad. I also managed to beat the game but I probably won't do it again.
I’ve seen a small handful say that the screen crunch was unavoidable and that lots of games had it, but between the GBA being significantly more powerful than a Sega Genesis and most games with screen crunch being more of a minor inconvenience, I disagree. There’s no excuse for this much screen crunch!!!!
Fun fact Simon Thomley yes the same guy who was a part of the sonic mania team actually made proper port of Sonic Genesis on the GBA

The fact that Sega had already released a Sonic game on the DS before this abomination on GBA (Sonic Rush)
Then why release the game on a previous console
@@Phoenix_Blader_93 because logic
Its kinda sad because there were Sonic Advance games that came out before Sonic Genesis that were way better. There was no reason for this version to suck.
I dunno if you're familiar with the Sonic fangame scene, but Sonic Genesis REALLY takes me back to the days when everyone made these bad clickteam fangames, especially the boss battles.
3:52 super man 64 “Fly through rings!”
17:58 "He is everywhere after all" Trailer Drake?!
The GBA is waaaaaaaaaay more powerful than the Genesis, there was no excuse for this whatsoever. It probably suffered from the same thing Sonic 06 did. "The game isn't nearly ready." "Doesn't matter, it has to come out today, release it anyway, people will buy it."
Where are your sonic remake or rebreaks?
@Jo'El Looky makes sense, I'll miss them though
The Sega Smash Pak version on Dreamcast is so distorted soundwise, I can't even play it without wanting to start crying because the sound hits certain tones that distresses me.
It's an audible assault, and it makes the GBA version's music seem fairly fine in comparison.
Imagine the poor people that first experienced a sonic game with this abomination
I did lmao
Don't forget that there's a DS port of StH 1-3 (& Knuckles). So even though the GBA port came late, the DS still got all three of them. And the GameCube Sega collection. Not sure about their release dates in relation to the console life.
But on another note, I like 2 and 3 for the dashing. They're all pretty good, but the dash was soooo nice.
Got a friend who beat this before beating either the '91 or Retro Engine releases. Madness.
Why couldn't they just emulate it like the DS? It just doesn't make sense... Stealth made a fixed and playable version if any madman would want to play this "game"...
How appropriate you uploaded this on 9/11, because this port is a fucking tragedy.
